2025 was another successful year for Gosfield Lake Golf Club. We increased our club memberships and a record number of visitors enjoyed both the Lakes and Meadows Courses.
The success of British & European golfers started with the win by Rory Mcllroy at the Masters and completed the Grand Slam by winning all the Majors in his golfing career. The back-to-back Ryder cup victory by Europe over the U.S.A. in New York was headline news all over the world.
The climate also assisted with ideal golfing weather giving us exceptional sunshine, with warm days throughout the year.
Gosfield Lake Golf Club’s Lakes course has gained an excellent reputation as one of the best designed and MOST memorable 18 holes in Essex.
We are equally proud of our reputation for delicious home cooked food, a well stocked bar and friendly staff. We have hosted a number of county finals and have been the chosen venue for many inter-county matches
in East Anglia. Every year we have been selected on a competitive basis for corporate days and charity days. Some events have been held here for more than 30 years, testimony to the consistent high standard we maintain.
Societies are welcomed and it is not unusual for them to book their next date before leaving the club. We believe Gosfield Lake Golf Club gives one of the most enjoyable golfing and eating experiences in Essex, we are proud of that and invite you to visit us and see for yourself.
6 OUR HISTORY
ROYAL VISITS BY QUEEN ELIZABETH 1 IN THE 16TH CENTURY
Ham and eggs, gin and tonic. Some things just naturally go together. Another is historic homes and great golf courses. Gosfield Lake Golf Club is laid out in mature parkland which was formerly the grounds of Gosfield Hall.
Gosfield Hall was built in 1545 by John Wentworth, a close associate of Cardinal Wolsey, and hosted Royal visits by Queen Elizabeth 1 in the 16th century. At the time of the French Revolution it was the home of King Louis XVIII and his Queen Marie Josephine Louise of Savoy who had fled France. A chance meeting in 1969 at York University
on the first day of term between two undergraduates who had much in common led to a lifelong friendship. The two students were Ralph Rowe and Michael O’Shea and a visit by Rowe to O’Shea’s family home in Gosfield provided the opportunity to see Gosfield Hall, the Manor House and the surrounding acres of parkland.
The decision to build a golf course at Gosfield was made in 1986. Architect, Howard Swann and designer Sir Henry Cotton, three times Open Champion, proposed that a nine-hole course be added to the 18 hole
championship course planned. The Lakes course would be a true test of golf, while the nine-hole Meadows course would be less demanding, but nevertheless, would provide an entry point for newcomers to the game. The course construction was overseen by Mike’s brother, Tony O’Shea.
The key people are still there now! Ralph Rowe remains the proprietor, Tony O’Shea is the secretary/manager and Michael O’Shea is the club chairman/vice-president.
The first day’s play on the Lakes course took place in August 1988, with the Meadows opening a few months later. Already with 400 members, the former BBC golf commentator Peter Alliss performed the official opening ceremony on 5th June 1989, when the club was host to ladies from the Women’s Professional Golfers’ European Tour, 30 celebrities from television, film and sporting backgrounds together with 60 amateurs. This event raised the first of many thousands of pounds which have since benefited junior golfers at Gosfield Lake under the auspices of the Sir Henry Cotton Bursary.
Gosfield Village has 1500+ inhabitants, is surrounded by beautiful parkland, the largest freshwater lake in Essex and is a very desirable village to live in. Gosfield offers two private and one village school, Football field, Cricket field, Tennis Club, Water Skiing Club, Village Pub, Village Social Club, Children’s Park, Nature Park, Sports Pavillion, Village Shop, Village Hall, Gosfield Hall Wedding Venue, historic St Catherine’s Church and Gosfield Lake Golf Club with 27 holes of Golf.
The Golf Club will celebrate it’s 38th anniversary in 2026.

8 ABOUT THE COURSES
GOSFIELD LAKE GOLF CLUB IS BLESSED WITH TWO COURSES
Gosfield Lake Golf Club is blessed with two courses each serving the different needs of the members.
COVERING 230 ACRES FOR THE 27 HOLES, THERE IS SPACE TO LAY OUT SOME OUTSTANDING GOLF HOLES.
The Championship LAKES COURSE at Gosfield, set in 160 acres of beautiful rural north Essex, is a 6,700 yard par 72 idyll of an English golf club. The historic parkland and ancient woodlands on which the course stands to the north of Gosfield Lake is
classed as an area of outstanding natural beauty. With the space available there were a number of alternative golf holes that could have been designed but most important was to design and build the best 18 holes. The professional course record is 66 strokes, only one shot better than the 67 strokes amateur record.
The parkland setting with its gently undulating fairways, challenging water hazards and superb sand based greens provide conditions for playing golf that are hard to find elsewhere in the eastern
counties. It was no surprise when Sir Henry Cotton, three times Open Champion, who designed the course, commented ‘THE CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE HERE AT GOSFIELD HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME THE FINEST INLAND TEST OF GOLF IN ENGLAND’.
For almost 38 years we have continuously invested to improve the two courses at Gosfield with new teeing areas, new footpaths, improved drainage, boosted irrigation, latest grass cutting machinery and planting of hundreds of trees.

Be sure to admire the water fountain in the lake as you approach the 18th green. To the right of the lake is a bridge constructed with Scottish grey granite, a scaled down version of the Swilken bridge at St Andrews. Our signature hole is the 440 yard 14th, Cotton’s Choice, which demands an accurate tee shot and an even more accurate approach to avoid a large tree and finally over water to an undulating green. It’s a course that visitors often remark that they remember every hole, even at the first time of playing.
Our MEADOWS COURSE was the brainchild of Sir Henry Cotton who was keen to encourage people of all ages to play golf. This course has two sets of tees and occupies 70 acres, a par 66 and is 4,990 yards in length. It is a measured course for W.H.S. handicap purposes. We also have forward tees for younger children to help them enjoy their game. It is ideal for new members without handicaps, both young and not so young, to learn the game, it’s etiquette and improve their game before taking on the challenge of the Lakes Course.
Due to the excellent drainage characteristics the courses are rarely closed in winter and temporary greens are not needed unless there is exceptional wet weather. Blue Winter Tees were added to the Lakes course some years ago. Prior to the winter season of 2025/26 an investment in winter mats to protect the regular tees and a new course measurement to enable competition play for handicap purposes throughout the year. A seperate card for the Blue course of 5809 yards, par 70, is available.

NEW MEMBERS ALWAYS WELCOME MEMBERSHIP
We are delighted to welcome new members to Gosfield Lake Golf Club. The application process is straightforward and all potential members must complete an application form that is available from the secretary’s office. The secretary or membership representative will discuss membership whilst showing you the facilities at the club. Should you wish to play the course you will be able to deduct the green fee paid from your membership fee. There are various categories of member-ship, and there are maximum numbers in each category, however there are currently vacancies
available. There are presently no joining fees to pay.
OTHER MEMBER BENEFITS
All Members have priority access to the 24/7 Tee Booking System to both courses. All Members are affiliated to the World Handicapping System for handicap maintenance. Members may introduce up to three guests to the club at discounted rate, and can represent the club in county or friendly matches. Members may join in social functions and introduce friends/family to the club. Members club card gives 10%
DISCOUNT ON ALL FOOD AND DRINK IN THE CLUBHOUSE.
Members are given special rates when holding private parties at the club. Annual fees include limited insurance in case of accident. Members are rewarded for introducing new members to the club. Members are part of County Card Scheme to play other clubs at discount rates. Members of a society are given full credit on the green fee portion. Full seven-day members have exclusive rights to play until 11.30 at weekends.

Set in the heart of peaceful picturesque North-West Essex, we have two excellent courses which between them, cater for all abilities.
The 18 hole Lakes course was designed to be a test of golf for the accomplished golfer.
The scenic nine hole Meadows course which is ideal for beginners who intend to improve their golf and make the transition to the Lakes course. The Meadows course is popular with those who wish to play on a less demanding course. It also provides a unique way for beginners to get their handicap in a stress free environment. Membership of the Lakes course automatically entitles you to play on the Meadows course and many of our members
do just that if the main course is busy or if they just wish to hone their skills. As well as the adult sections, we have an intermediate (18 to 32) and junior section here at Gosfield Lake Golf Club. In recent years we have increased the Intermediate Section numbers reducing the average age of our adult membership. With increased younger junior numbers, Juniors now have reduced fees up to 11 years old. Our Juniors receive considerable financial support from our Sir Henry Cotton Bursary, an annual event which has now raised over £120,000 since its inception in 1989.
We have a full and varied programme of competitions on both courses, for men, ladies and juniors. Prizes are divided between the competitors to accommodate the high, medium and low handicappers. In addition, there are many mixed events, often on bank holiday weekends.
Our senior section (Gosfield Gentlemen, or GG’s as they are called) is particularly strong. They have their own competitions on Mondays and Thursdays and play many friendly matches against other clubs.
Social golf is extremely popular here at Gosfield and there are a number of roll ups on both courses. These provide a valuable opportunity for new members to meet up and make new friends. One of our roll-ups, the Tuesday Swindle has been in operation for more than 35 years and is open to all adult male members (18+), a great mixer for new members.
We also have a number of friendly matches against other clubs on a home and away basis. Whatever type of golf you like, you can find it here at Gosfield.

JUNIORS
Gosfield Lake Golf Club is proud of the fantastic Junior Membership. We host competitions and matches throughout the year for our juniors.
Our PGA Professional Helena Holland, has created a fantastic plan to encourage new young golfers to try Golf and become involved in the sport from ages 4 to 17. Helena’s plan firstly starts with fun Weekly Sunday sessions where all are welcome. This takes place on the driving range, where there are different challenges given each
week. At the end of each session the ‘star of the week’ will go home with a novelty head cover and some treats for their great work during the session.
The second stage of the plan is the ‘Members Saturdays.’ The group is the next stage up from the Sunday sessions and will consist of only Gosfield Lake Junior Members. They will be given weekly coaching lessons subsidised by the Golf Club Bursary. This is a great opportunity for your child to take the initial step towards membership at the Golf Club.
The final stage of the plan is moving up to the Lakes 18 hole Golf Course. This is where the Juniors have successfully achieved a 36 handicap and will now compete in internal and external competitions and matches.

Gosfield Lake has a loyal Mens membership with a variety of different competitions and matches played each week. There is coaching available 7 days a week for all. Helena has held group lessons for Veteran GG Members which has been a great success. Every Wednesday afternoon

there are Mens group lessons available for beginners and for members.
Helena has also found that the most progress is made during lessons on the Golf Course and being put in tough playing situations. It is a much more realistic outcome due to there being a different option for each shot.
LADIES
Helena introduced a scheme In 2021 for all new lady beginners. This consisted of ‘Golf, Coffee and Cake-Group Lessons’ This was a huge success as we currently
have 45 new ladies enrolled in the scheme and are loving their Golf. From these 45 ladies, many have now achieved a handicap (one has a 16 handicap!) The coaching scheme takes place every Wednesday and Saturday morning, commencing with one hour group lesson followed by coffee and cake in the clubhouse restaurant. Helena has organised golf competitions and club events, including a Christmas competition and a Christmas dinner to follow. The new Ladies are introduced to other Ladies from different groups before joining the existing Lady club members.

PGA Professional Helena Holland has been involved with Golf since the age of 12. She was a Junior Member at Bishop Stortford Golf Club until the age of 17. During this time, Helena played in Junior and Ladies club matches, competitions and events.
At the age of 14 Helena joined Hertfordshire County girls training and worked her way through the county Girls rankings. Helena’s first big win was the ‘Hertfordshire County Girls Autumn Meeting Competition’. From this, Helena went on to play in Hertfordshire Girls and Hertfordshire Ladies County matches. Helena then progressed to play in England Girls Championship Events before
enrolling on to the Birmingham University PGA Course. Helena started her PGA journey when she was 18 years of age in 2017. She successfully competed on the Women’s Professional Golfers Association (WPGA) Circuit gaining ranking points. Helena also graduated on her PGA course, covering many aspects of being a PGA Professional and running a PGA business. She is still committed to continue to play on the WPGA Circuit as a fully qualified PGA Professional.
Helena joined Gosfield Lake Golf Club in June 2021, as an Assistant Pro, hosting numerous events and programmes, coaching, and

Within the first 5 months they had achieved in stocking S3 Clothing within 6 other professional shops. The next step is to look worldwide shipping and across bigger platforms. MEET

Gosfield Lake operates a booking system with guaranteed tee times throughout the playing day. All bookings are controlled by the Professional Shop. In general members have agreed reserved tee times on certain days and particularly weekend mornings. Early morning and late morning tee times are available but must be booked in advance. Green Fee paying visitors can book up to 5 Days in advance. The Professional Shop controls and monitors the availability of starting times and can advise on the best times to play.
Our Meadows course usually has more availability. To make a great day out, 9 holes on The Meadows is worth playing in the morning to warm up, followed by breakfast or light lunch before tackling the more difficult Lakes Course. Our professional teaching staff can also arrange for one-on one tuition should you wish to brush up your skills before playing.

Our dress code requires that you use proper golf attire while playing. Smart casual dress in all areas of the clubhouse and change shoes (unless you stay in the Cotton spike bar) or sit on the patio overlooking the 9th and 18th greens.

Arranging for your clients to play an enjoyable round of golf on a quality course

Upstairs in the clubhouse we have facilities for training courses, seminars and business meetings for 40 persons with or without the use of the golf course facilities. Refreshments can be served and meal services all added to impress your staff or clients.

We have held regular charity days for a number of clients with celebrities and golfers, featuring up to 120 players and car parking for 150 vehicles close to the clubhouse and course.

CREATE YOUR UNIQUE SOCIETY GOLF DAY
Golf societies are always assured of a warm welcome at Gosfield Lake Golf Club. We pride ourselves on the care and attention we give to ensure your day runs smoothly.
NOTHING IS TOO MUCH TROUBLE AND WE WOULD BE DELIGHTED TO HELP YOU CREATE A GOLF DAY AGENDA UNIQUE TO YOUR GROUP.
All society days are booked by our secretary’s office. We provide everything you need to make your day a success. We
reserve the tee times and buggies, arrange nearest the pin and long drive markers for you. Finally we make the dining room reservations and prepare a delicious meal for you.
We offer numerous packages from the smallest number to large groups of 100. These range from the basic package to the top of the range option that will ensure a dream day out for anyone who plays the game of golf. Our dedicated team will discuss your requirements and suggest various options, all prices are competitive and offer value for money.
EVENTS AND MERCHANDISING FOR SOCIETY DAYS
When you have booked your bespoke society golf day with the Club Office, head over to us at the Pro Shop to arrange other society features to really enhance your group day out.
We offer a wide range of male and female clothing, accessories and gifts which can be branded for your day at Gosfield Lake. Golfers always like a memento of their day out, and what better way than to reward
them with a prize which reflects that. We have clothing, headwear, umbrellas, balls, assorted ball markers and pitch mark repairers with the Gosfield Lake Golf Club logo, which make the prize a great reminder of your day out.
We offer a range of prizes for all budgets so why not give each player a Gosfield Lake Golf Club ball marker as pre-round gift for instance.
Alternatively, we can organise a range of Gift Vouchers to be spent at the Pro Shop, so that your players can select their own prizes from our great range of golfing gear.
If you would prefer to have your own logo or inscription on clothing or accessories, we can also arrange that for you. We have access to a wide range of brands and products and through our many suppliers we can create some great prize and gift ideas for you.
We can also organise events to really enhance your day out. Players enjoy the challenge of “Beat the Pro to Nearest the Pin” on par 3s. Putting competitions are also always popular and can be organised on our Putting Green adjacent to the Clubhouse,

meaning everyone can take part in the fun. Practice sessions before your society tees off are becoming more popular as well. We offer group lessons to help freshen up your players skills before the competition, making it a really great day out.

OPEN EVENTS
We have been selected by the Essex Golf Union to hold many County and InterCounty events. In addition Gosfield Lake hosts the E.G.U. BOYS FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIP. Finally we host our own Junior Open in October.
The Sir Henry Cotton Bursary is run by the club to raise funds for our juniors. Almost 100 golfers compete in teams of four to win the BURSARY CUP. We are proud that many teams have been entering for many years and that we have raised in excess of £110,000 for our juniors.
Our ladies section also promote a ladies Open and also a guest day that attracts many players.
Gosfield Lake is renowned for our senior open events and we hold two meetings every year; These are the Seniors Spring Meeting and the Seniors Autumn Open, which incorporates the Seniors Open Cup. Both events are open to men 55 or over.
We hold an early summer Mixed Open which incorporates our Mixed Open Cup. All events are very well supported, being

oversubscribed on many occasions. We pride ourselves on giving value for money, a great day for entrants providing the ubiquitous coffee and bacon rolls on arrival, 18 holes on the Lakes Course, followed by our legendary two course carvery, and prize presentation.
We have been holding events for 30 years and have welcomed competitors from all the Counties in East Anglia

DINING ROOM AND RESTAURANT
Set on 230 acres of north Essex parkland the clubhouse, formally a Manor House extended to accommodate a growing golf club membership, offers a welcoming respite for golfers seeking sustenance after their round.
The clubhouse was first managed by Maggie Rowe, who passed her knowledge and love of the service business down to members of staff. Our stewardess Clare Rix started working for the Golf Club at 15 and gained hospitality experience elsewhere for some years before returning as Steward for the last 10 years. We pride ourselves on continuing
our reputation and offering genuine hospitality and a warm welcome. The wellstocked bar and cold cellar offers local ales, lagers, a range of popular gins, wines, spirits and other beverages. We have been told that we make the best rock shandy, a popular golfers’ drink. We stock over 10 different gins, perfect for you to enjoy a refeshing drink on a hot day sitting out on the patio watching the golfers finishing their game, or relax inside on a cold day with a nice hot drink.
Our clubhouse menu offers all the golfers’ favourites, including bacon rolls, chips, cheesy chips, sausage rolls and club
sandwiches. As well as these our chef for the last 5 years, David Soraf and his team creates dishes for our lunchtime daily specials board. Try our homemade Lasagne followed by a slice of homemade cake. If you wish to eat in style you can book a table in our newly refurbished Clubroom Restaurant and choose from our a la carte menu. The restaurant is available for private hire and is delightful for those big auspicious occasions. There’s something to suit everyone. We are happy to discuss your Individual requirements and help you decide on catering arrangements.
Function facilities are available for weddings, anniversaries, conferences, corporate days, private functions and parties.
WE HAVE DINING FACILITIES FOR 80 TO 100 PEOPLE AND CAN ACCOMMODATE 200 PEOPLE FOR EVENING FUNCTIONS. WE ALSO HAVE A PRIVATE DINING ROOM WHICH SEATS 20 PEOPLE FOR LUNCH OR DINNER.
Our steward and chef can discuss dining requirements and can offer everything from a gourmet feast to our famous carvery or special dietary meals. Our bar staff and restaurant staff ensure that everything will be done to make your special day a success.
Seminars and training days can be organised and held in a separate meeting room which is available for up to 30/40 people.
