But we’re more than just a golf course.
HISTORY
The Course
Erewash Valley Golf Club was founded in 1905, originally as a nine hole course and by late 1907 it was extended to eighteen, one of which was a par-6 played over a road and two hedges!
During the First World War, the course reverted to a nine hole layout and parts were ploughed and given over to grazing sheep. In 1920, Mr Charles Crompton, who had been the club’s president since its inception, gifted 108-acres of land which formed the basis of the course we know today. It was a very tight, short course in those days and possible to go out of bounds at all but one hole.
Between 1965 – 76, the club used a number of different course layouts. However, since then, the course has not altered drastically, the most recent alteration being the construction of a par-3 (named Dallager) on the old practice ground. Along with the Winter 1st hole (named Spring), this allows members to play a different configuration during winter months when the two quarry holes are taken out of play. It’s for this reason that each hole has its own name as well as number.
Today, the course has little rough but every hole is tree-lined, which makes
straight drives imperative. Water is in play on three holes, Memorial, Church Walk and Willow Farm and out of bounds threatens on ten holes.
In addition to the practice putting and chipping greens, the 16-acre practice area was transformed in 2019 into a 12 bay Covered Driving Range along with 6 outdoor bays, a fantastic addition to our practice facilities.
The Clubhouse & facilities
Initially, the clubhouse was then a room rented from Willow Farm (which is now the dining room and kitchens) and a second-hand guard van served as the changing rooms.
In 2008, a new clubhouse extension provided the club with sufficient space for two bar / restaurant areas, which can be separated into private function rooms.
At the same time, the newly-constructed changing rooms provide superb facilities for the club’s 660 members.

ABOUT THE COURSE
Hole One - Memorial
One of the longest opening holes in England, named in honour of club members who lost their lives in the world wars.
Hole Two – Church Walk
The public footpath crossing the course and this hole links the churches at Stanton by Dale and Sandiacre.
We undertook a significant program of work to improve the drainage across our entire Front Nine holes. This is now paying dividends, with our course remaining playable all year round.
Hole Three - Divide
The change in direction of the fairway furrows gives this exacting par 4 its name, although the fairway has been subsequently levelled at average driving length, where a recently constructed bunker has been introduced.
Hole Four - Quarry
A unique short par 3 hole that is played from an elevated tee down into the quarry. Stone was extracted in Victorian times for building works.
Pro Tip
4th Hole Par 3 (Quarry) - Despite the hole measuring at only 92 yards it plays much shorter due to the elevation of the tee, so be sure to take one less club here!
Hole Five – In the Quarry
A par 3 that is played along the quarry floor. The tee shot being all important as failure to find the green can be costly.

Hole Six - Crompton
Named in honour of the club’s main benefactor, who gave the land on which the original course stood. The hole has seen a re-constructed tee box in 2010/11 along with two fairway bunkers to add difficulty for the lower handicap players going for a birdie 4 and those going for a challenging par 5.
Hole Seven – Box Elder
The large tree on the left-hand side of the fairway at driver length gives this par 4 its main characteristic and making accuracy off the tee of primary importance.
Hole Eight - Spinney
One of the best designed par 4s that requires two accurate shots to find the large green. The trees on the left-hand side of the green give the hole its name.
Hole Nine – Stoney Cloud
This hole is played towards the Stoney Cloud cliff rock formation which is on the other side of the motorway.
Hole Ten - Orchard
A long par 4 that is played through what was an apple and English pear orchard that existed when the land was first purchased by the club in the 1960s.

ABOUT THE COURSE
Hole Eleven – The Folly
The club’s management committee in the mid-1960s had a major disagreement with the architect’s design of the hole and it was called a designer’s folly. The greens reconstruction programme from 2003 saw the green move forty yards left of its original position.
Pro Tip
11th Hole Par 4 (The Folly) - The longest Par 4 on the course measuring at 448 yards, aim your tee shot and approach shot down the right side of the hole as everything slopes from right to left.
Hole Twelve - Barbadoes
A par 5 at the top of the course, which on clear days provides views as far away as Crich Point. The hole is named after the area to the left of the fairway known as Barbadoes where a hamlet of cottages used to exist.
Hole Thirteen - Summers
The tee shot on this par 4 is played back down into the Erewash Valley. The hole is called Summers in recognition of a past Club President whose property is on the corner of the dog-leg. Mr Ted Summers was instrumental in the club acquiring additional land from Stanton Ironworks in the mid-1960s to maintain the 18 hole course.
Hole 12
Hole Fourteen – Village Pound
This hole is named after the old pound that was used to place stray animals for the village to collect. The pound still exists, without a gate, on Quarry Hill Road near the existing tee. A difficult par 3 that can wreck many a good score.
Hole Fifteen – O’er the Trees
The tee shot is played over the trees bordering the quarry to find the fairway. The shorter hitter can play to the right of the trees leaving a longer second shot to the well-guarded green.
Pro Tip
15th Hole Par 4 (O’er The Trees) - Starting this hole with a blind tee shot, avoid being greedy here as left is out of bounds and right isn’t any better. Your line off the tee is further right than you think!
Hole Sixteen - Stanton
The view from the tee is directly towards the site of the old Stanton Ironworks, where many members of the club earned their living.

ABOUT THE COURSE
Hole Seventeen – The Mounds
The mounds to the right of the hole were provided by the soil recovered from the provision of a 48 inch water main through the course and a pond constructed at the side of The Spring, the winter first hole. The pond short left of the green provides a testing hazard for most golfers.
Hole Eighteen – Willow Farm
A strong par 3 played over a large pond. The hole is named after the farmhouse of Willow Brook Farm, which still forms part of the clubhouse
Pro Tip
18th Hole Par 3 (Willow Farm) - On the finishing hole with water short of the green, it is important to hit more club here than you think. As it’s more often than not into wind.

“Laurienne and I have returned back from our honeymoon and are now settling comfortably into married life.

From the M1 motorway junction 25
Take the exit signposted Risley / Sandiacre and proceed up Bostocks Lane until reaching the crossroads at the top of the hill. Turn right and follow Derby Road downhill towards Sandiacre, continue for approximately 1 mile until reaching the traffic lights and the canal bridge at the bottom of the hill.
Take the left turn towards Ilkeston and continue along this road, driving out of Sandiacre and passing under the M1 before turning left into Golf Club Road. The Club House is situated on the lefthand-side after 200m.
