Welcome Situated in the tranquil 18th Century parkland surrounding Hamels Mansion, East Herts Golf Club is renowned throughout Hertfordshire for its ancient trees and abundant wildlife. A traditional, friendly members’ club, East Herts Golf Club is easily accessed via the A10 from Junction 25 of the M25, the M11 and the A1 being just 30 minutes from London. Maintained to the highest standards throughout the year, together with good practice facilities, an experienced coaching team and well stocked Pro Shop together with our amazing chefs, we are able to offer the very best golf and hospitality experience to all our members and visitors. Lime Kiln Farm, Ware was bought by Albert Sandeman of “Port” fame who with Basil Richardson founded East Herts Golf Club which was opened on 9th November 1899. The formal opening was by Arthur Balfour MP for Hertford (1874-85)
and later Prime Minister (1902-06). The original course, which more or less corresponds to the Chadwell Springs course, was designed by J H Taylor who won the British Open 5 times! In October 1922 the clubhouse burnt down to the ground, along with all the records, clubs and lockers. The Club was offered the freehold of the course in 1925 by Mr. Sandeman but, following the fire, the members were unable to raise the money. Herbert Garrett bought the land in 1929 and in 1949 offered the course and buildings to the Club – but again the price of £9,500 proved
difficult. However, East Herts continued as leaseholders at Chadwell Springs until 1971. The club was forced to seek a new home in 1971 because of the planned Hertford-Ware A10 bypass which bisected the golf course. By November 1971 the Action Committee consisting of Captain Alf Hayes, F. S. Nicholl, Stan Rippon, Jack Watts, Ray Yorke and Club Secretary Hayden “Jimmy” James had started work on the 127 acre estate at Hamels Park, Buntingford to convert it into what is now East Herts Golf Club.
The new course was designed by former club professional David Lewis and Head Greenkeeper David Hunt with the aid of John Bennett and Jack Watts. ‘State of the Art’ American greens were constructed – the first of their
kind in England – consisting of 40% soil, 50% sand and 10% peat over 100 tons of shingle. The Course has undergone many changes since its opening in 1974 with holes being lengthened, bunkers added, bunkers removed and in 2005 the 6th Green was relocated to prevent golf balls flying into the Mansion grounds. No one can play East Herts Golf Club without enjoying the splendour of Hamels Mansion. Mentioned in the Domesday Book the original Mansion was built in 1580 and the building we see today was rebuilt in 1834.
Dutch Elm disease had its effect on the many specimen elm trees and the storm of 1987 caused further damage, most notably to the magnificent Lebanon Cedar tree on the 1st. Over 1,000 golf balls were found in that tree when clearing up after the storm! A tree management plan has been in operation for many years, preserving, maintaining and renewing our greatest asset. Course drainage is currently top of the list, ensuring the very best conditions for members and visitors throughout the year.

The Course & Course Tour Head Greenkeeper, Neil Faubel, has worked at the Club for 27 years, becoming Head Greenkeeper in 2004. He and his team work tirelessly to produce a golf course in exceptional condition throughout the year. Practice facilities include a 4 hole Par 3 Academy course, dedicated chipping and pitching green and practice bunkers all complementing the practice ground. Practice nets conveniently situated near the car park provide for that ‘warm up’ prior to your round. Over the next few pages take a guided tour around the course, noting the Professional’s tips and then come and play and enjoy Hertfordshire’s best kept secret!

Executive membership is available for anyone with any type of company. As a Gold Executive member this will entitle you to full membership privileges plus fifty free guest rounds. You may also have up to three Silver Executive members from your company who will be entitled to full membership privileges and who will receive twenty-five free guest rounds.

Gentlemen & Seniors Benefits Medals and stablefords, together with Honours Board and Trophy competitions are all itemised in the diary. There are also many knock out competitions throughout the year. The Pro Shop or the new member liaison officer is on hand to ensure you have playing partners. Less formal ‘swindles’ take place on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Just turn up, put your card in and you will be drawn with three other playing partners – an ideal way of meeting your fellow club members.
Our scratch team plays in the County league as well as the Thornton Cup, whilst the Tigers (handicaps 3 – 10) play in the Herts Tigers League. Inter-club matches against clubs from Essex, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Middlesex take place throughout the year.
If you are aged 55 or over you are eligible to join the Seniors. The Seniors also have their own medals and stablefords, trophy and honours board competitions as well as knock out competitions and matches against other clubs. Again, the new member liaison officer will help you to become involved with the Seniors who are a lively bunch and welcome newcomers.

Ladies & Mixed Benefits The ladies meet on a Wednesday morning to play a comprehensive range of medals, stablefords, pars, knock outs and Trophy competitions. Sign-up sheets can be found on the noticeboard in the locker room and ladies are encouraged to join other groups on the sheet. Friendly matches take place against other clubs in Hertfordshire, Essex and Cambridgeshire. Our two scratch teams are lively contenders in the County

Ovaltine Trophy whilst higher handicappers (13 – 32) compete for the Pearson Trophy through the winter months. The ladies have several ‘big days’ per year followed by a meal which are always well attended so sign up early. Every Saturday at around midday there is a ‘roll up swindle’ which is played in drawn teams and everyone is welcome.
East Herts has a thriving mixed section playing matches against other clubs throughout the season played on a ‘home’ and ‘away’ basis. Every Bank Holiday Monday there is a mixed competition which is open to 5 day members and is either 4BBB or Greensomes. We also have four Sunday Honours Board competitions and Texas Scrambles throughout the year. Partners can be found – just contact the organiser. Starting off in the Academy the children are soon playing on the Par 3 Academy course and from there to the short ‘blue’ course. The ‘blue’ course enables beginners to play on the golf course from forward tees which has proved to be a less daunting prospect when first venturing on to the golf course.
From day one in the Academy our juniors enjoy competing against each other for prizes and privileges. Our team of PGA professional coaches ensure that each child will achieve his or her full potential whilst having lots of fun with their peers in a safe environment.

Our dining room and function room can be hired by Members as the ideal location to host group functions or private dining parties for a formal dinner or for informal dining. The dining room is set in a delightful position with many scenic and panoramic views. It provides the perfect setting for any occasion offering every comfort for family and friends. Our catering team can supply a range of menus that can include everything from a four-course meal to a light evening dinner or even just a simple buffet. As you’d expect, we also have some occasions that are more formal — Summer Ball, Christmas and New Year Parties, for example, with live entertainment. Black tie and glamour may be the order of the day but East Herts members and their guests still let their hair down!

Society Days East Herts is the perfect venue for society and corporate golf days, offering an excellent golf course, facilities and surroundings. Societies are welcome Monday to Fridays (excluding Wednesday mornings and Bank Holidays). East Herts can offer a complete range of packages – from coffee & bacon roll on arrival followed by one round of golf to a full day’s golf with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Pro Shop Head Professional
Daniel Field joined East Herts in 2002 as an Assistant Pro and became our Head Professional in 2006. Daniel regularly plays in the PGA Eastern Region tournaments and is a key member of the team organising our Pro Am event held every July. Daniel has strong connections with the Willow organising Charity Events at the Club raising over £100,000 during the past 7 years.

Custom Fitting Golf club custom fitting used to be a luxury just for the professionals, but it is now widely available for all amateur golfers, taking into consideration their height, swing speed, and technique. Today’s golf magazines and websites are full of advertisements for new clubs offering the latest technology with claims that they will revolutionise your game, but this technology by itself may do nothing for your game. If the loft, face angle, length,
shaft weight or flex of the latest revolutionary driver is wrong for you, it ain’t going to improve your tee shots!

Here at East Herts we hold many charity events including the renowned Arsenal v Spurs Legends Day in aid of Willow, as well as being a sought after location for PGA Pro-Am and County events.

Testimonials Thank you again for your, Hertfordshire’s and East Herts’ kind and generous hospitality yesterday (and indeed on Saturday). It was a great pleasure for the boys to play such a fine course – the greens were, in particular, excellent. Unlike your team we will only lose 2 of our line up next year to old age so most of them look forward to another thrilling encounter on Sussex soil. I just hope we will manage a find a course up to East Herts quality to host it. We thought the course was magnificent and the meal afterwards was perfect. Find Us Hamels Park, Buntingford, Hertfordshire East Herts Golf Club is situated on the northbound carriageway of the A10 between Puckeridge and Buntingford in Hertfordshire, only 20 minutes from Junction 25 of the M25 to the south and 20 minutes from the M11 at Bishop’s Stortford to the east.
