Coombe Wood Golf Club, one of the friendliest clubs in Surrey. Just nine miles from central London, the club offers a peaceful retreat with stunning views across the Surrey Downs.

Set within the exclusive Coombe Estate near Kingston upon Thames, the course has a rich history. It was conceived by Prince George, Duke of Cambridge, and his two younger sons, opening as a nine-hole layout in 1904 before expanding to 18 holes in 1922.

Measuring 5,285 yards (par 66), the course is well regarded for both its condition and thoughtful design. Each hole presents its own character and challenge, making it enjoyable for golfers of all abilities.

The club has continued to evolve over the years, with ongoing improvements to the clubhouse and facilities for both members and visitors. About the Course

Coombe Wood Golf Club is a mature parkland course, renowned for its challenging par threes, framed by tree-lined par fours and well-protected, heavily bunkered greens.

It’s a tight layout that rewards accuracy and thoughtful shotmaking. With out of bounds in play on several holes and a variety of hazards to navigate, careful course management is essential.

Extended to 18 holes in 1922, the par 66 course measures 5,285 yards from the white tees, where good scoring depends on precise tee shots and smart positioning.

The toughest test comes at the par four 13th. Two long, straight shots are required before reaching a green guarded by bunkers and shaped with subtle borrows that demand a confident touch.

Water also plays its part, with strategically placed ditches and brooks coming into play on a number of holes. Combined with extensive bunkering, the course provides a fair but searching challenge for golfers of all abilities.

Our signature hole is the par four 11th. A picturesque right-to-left sloping fairway sets up a testing approach, where a ditch and wellplaced bunkers protect the green.

History of the Club

The origins of Coombe Wood Golf Club trace back to 1904, when a nine-hole course was officially opened on part of the 1,300acre Coombe Estate, acquired by Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge. It was his son, Prince George, Duke of Cambridge; the Commander-in-Chief of the British Army from 1856 to 1895, who along with his sons, transformed an unsightly gravel pit into the vision of the course we enjoy today.

Tragically, Prince George did not live to see his dream realised; he passed away in 1904. Later that year, his sons, Colonel Sir Augustus and Admiral Sir Aldolphus Fitzgeorge, opened the course, with the Honorable Arthur Balfour, then Prime Minister, named as captain. The club proudly honours this heritage with the Cambridge Cup, our oldest trophy, first contested in 1911.

After the First World War, the land previously used by local hockey and cricket clubs became available, allowing the course to expand to 18 holes, 10 above George Road and eight below. This new 18-hole course was opened in 1922 by Field Marshal Earl Haig, the serving captain at the time. The ladies’ section thrived too, becoming autonomous by 1925 with its own captain.

Following Colonel FitzGeorge’s death in 1933, the remaining 700 acres of the estate were sold. Malden and Coombe Council stepped in to save the Club, purchasing the land from Higgs and Hill and leasing it back, preventing its closure. While a series of short-term leases followed, the club lacked long-term security, and by the end of the Second World War, both clubhouse and course were in poor condition.

The commitment of members; both financial and physical, ensured the club’s survival. In 1994, a new 125-year lease secured our tenure until 2119, providing the confidence to redevelop the clubhouse in 2002–03, just in time to celebrate our centenary.

Over the years, Coombe Wood has hosted golfers whose names are now legendary. John de Forest was English Amateur Champion in 1932, P.W.L. Risdon represented England internationally in the 1930s, Pam Barton became British Ladies Champion in 1936, and more recently James Heath won the Lytham Trophy by a record 10 shots and the English Amateur Championship, both in 2004.

While much has changed since the early 20th century, the course still presents as stern a challenge today as it did in its pioneering days, maintaining the legacy of excellence and competitive spirit that has defined Coombe Wood Golf Club for over a century.

If you’ve never played at Coombe Wood Golf Club before, you’re in for a real treat. To help you make the most of your visit, we’ve put together a hole-by-hole guide highlighting the key challenges and tips on how to navigate them successfully. This tour will give you a head start in avoiding the pitfalls and enjoying everything our course has to offer.

Hole 1, 494 yards, par 5

Aim your tee shot slightly right of centre for the best angle to the second shot, which plays blind over the ‘cliff’ to the far half of the fairway. Note the marker post at the back of the green. Long hitters should watch out for running off the fairway to the right and being blocked by trees.

Hole 2, 362 yards, par 4

A tee shot favouring the centre or right opens up the green. A wellstruck drive leaves a short approach to a generous green.

Course Tour

Hole 3, 212 yards, par 3

A challenging par three with hazards on all sides. Higher handicaps should consider a medium iron to avoid greenside bunkers and out-of-bounds to the left.

Hole 4, 354 yards, par 4

As is so often the case at Coombe Wood the emphasis here is on accuracy. Safety off the tee can be found right of centre of the fairway, leaving a mid-short iron to a well bunkered green.

Hole 5, 180 yards, par 3

This two-tiered green requires checking the pin before selecting your club. The tee is mostly sheltered except from a headwind.

Hole 6, 428 yards, par 4

A straight drive landing centre/right is ideal, as the fairway tends to kick left. Club selection for the green is important depending on pin placement.

Hole 7, 337 yards, par 4

Avoid greed off the tee; deep fairway bunkers can make reaching the green difficult. A three wood or long iron keeps you safe for a short approach.

Hole 8, 212 yards, par 3

Another long par three. Aim slightly left to clear the ‘cliff’ Anything hit too far to the right is in big trouble where out of bounds awaits.

Hole 9, 294 yards, par 4

Longer hitters may attempt to take on this par four, but the green’s entrance is narrow. Any doubts, then hit an iron from the tee but beware the fairway bunkers to the right.

Hole 10, 152 yards, par 3

A deceptive par three before crossing the road to the lower half of the course. For a back-left pin, aim for the bank and let the ball run down to the flag.

Hole 11, 392 yards, par 4

Aim the drive just to the right of centre as the fairway kicks the ball to the left. Longer hitters might consider a long iron from the tee if downwind to avoid the ditch running across the fairway. The green, like the fairway, will tend to kick the ball from right to left.

Hole 12, 184 yards, par 3

A tee shot finishing below the hole will leave the best chance of a makeable putt. Anything from above the hole when running quickly could have your nerves in tatters on this sloping green..

Hole 13, 434 yards, par 4

A good straight drive is paramount on this tough par 4. The second shot plays longer than the yardage might suggest and should be aimed centre/right of the green.

Hole 14, 135 yards, par 3

A swirling wind should be carefully studied on this tee as should pin placement, both making a big difference to club selection.

Hole 15, 296 yards, par 4

A fairway wood or long iron tee aimed just to the left of the fairway bunker will leave a short iron to the green. The second shot needs to be played positively to this uphill green.

Hole 16, 282 yards, par 4

Aim left of centre off the tee to allow the slope to take the ball to the right. Anything too far left however and the out of bounds is waiting. A risky tee shot for the longer hitters to take on the green but the reward could be great.

Hole 17, 149 yards, par 3

Club selection is again the emphasis on this tricky downhill par three but if in doubt, take the shorter club as the big trouble is at the back of the green.

Hole 18, 393 yards, par 4

Uphill all the way, the tee shot must be well struck to avoid a very long second shot. The line from the tee should be at the right half of the clubhouse. Longer hitters should be aware of the ditch that runs across the fairway. Take plenty of club on the second shot up the hill to the narrow green.

Our facilities are open to anyone who has paid a green fee and cater to all aspects of the game:

• Putting Green: A large, meticulously prepared green mirrors the subtle borrows found on the course, perfect for refining your putting.

• Chipping Area & Practice Bunker: Ideal for working on those round-saving up-and-downs and sand shots.

• Practice Nets: Two nets allow you to warm up quickly before your round.

We have also recently built a state of the art Short Game Area, designed to help golfers of all levels improve their pitching, chipping, bunker play, and putting. The facility features five dedicated areas, allowing multiple players to practise simultaneously in a safe and structured environment.

This short game facility complements our other practice areas, giving players the chance to focus on the parts of their game that make the biggest difference on the course.

Members’ Golf

Members at Coombe Wood Golf Club enjoy a full and varied programme of golf throughout the year. Fixtures against other clubs are complemented by a wide range of competitions, offering opportunities to compete for trophies as well as participate in more social events.

One of the great attractions for both new and established members is our popular “roll-up” games, held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Our non-competition weekends also provide the perfect opportunity to enjoy a relaxed and friendly round of golf.

Whatever your handicap, age, or golfing ambition, there is always something to suit you at Coombe Wood and you will never be short of playing opportunities.

Gentlemen

The Men’s Section enjoys a strong tradition of competitive golf, both within the club and in matches against other clubs and leagues.

Full members regularly participate in the popular roll-ups, which are an excellent way to meet fellow members, as well as monthly medal and trophy competitions held on Saturdays or Sundays.

The club hosts numerous matches and, for members with a recognised handicap, offers opportunities to represent Coombe Wood in the Warren League and the Hilliard League. In addition, we compete in a variety of friendly fixtures, including both men’s and mixed matches, alongside knockout competitions throughout the summer.

While competitive golf is a key focus, contributing to our success in team events, balance remains important. We also provide regular social golf, where the emphasis is on friendship, enjoyment, and perhaps a celebratory drink in the bar afterwards.

Women

The women’s section at Coombe Wood comprises over 150 members. The course provides an enjoyable yet challenging experience for golfers of all abilities, featuring a variety of holes with both short and long layouts.

Thanks to excellent natural drainage, the course is often playable when others are closed, and temporary greens or tees are rarely required, typically only during improvement works.

Our light and spacious clubhouse offers stunning views towards the North Downs, where members can enjoy lunch, afternoon tea, or a drink on the balcony during summer evenings.

There are at least two qualifying competitions each month, held on Tuesdays and weekends. When no qualifying event is scheduled, organised fun formats are usually arranged. An informal roll-up takes place most Friday mornings from around 9:30am, with full course access available at all other advertised times.

The club fields teams in major Surrey events and plays more than 20 friendly matches annually, both home and away.

Members’ Golf Continued

New members are warmly welcomed and fully integrated into the section. Social highlights include an annual away day to a nearby course, a two-day away weekend with competitions and dinner, a prize-giving evening, and a charity dinner each May in support of the Lady Captain’s chosen charity.

Juniors

We warmly welcome juniors of all ages and abilities, ensuring a fun, safe, and positive golfing experience.

Currently, junior members range from eight to 18 years old, with opportunities to compete in weekly competitions and inter-club team matches. During the summer, junior groups play on Friday evenings, and matches are held against other Surrey clubs on both home and away basis.

The club hosts an annual open event, the September Junior Open, which is an 18-hole scratch and handicap medal competition, with winners qualifying for the Surrey Junior Order of Merit.

Coombe Wood is recognised as one of the leading clubs in junior development, holding England Golf’s highly regarded SafeGolf accreditation. With a dedicated support team, our juniors are well guided and encouraged. Over the years, the club has produced many talented players, including former English Amateur Champion and tournament professional James Heath.

Seniors

The Seniors Section is a vibrant and active part of the club, meeting every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for both fun competitions and qualifying medal and Stableford events. With over 125 members, the competitive group proudly calls themselves The Fellowship Of Retired Gentlemen Golfers, affectionately known as “FROGGS.”

Nine-Hole Competitions

The section also organises numerous social events throughout the year, including regular new members’ evenings to ensure newcomers feel immediately welcome. It is no surprise the group is widely regarded as one of the friendliest in the region.

Weekly nine-hole competitions take place on Wednesday and Thursday evenings throughout spring and summer, from 3:30pm, with no booking required. These events provide an excellent opportunity to obtain or maintain a handicap in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

The Academy

A successful recent addition to Coombe Wood Golf Club is our Golf Academy membership, offering the opportunity to receive professional tuition while enjoying access to the course.

This membership provides an ideal introduction to the game for adults who wish to try golf before committing to full membership. It is particularly well suited to beginners, as well as those returning to the sport after a break.

The Academy offers an outstanding all-round package at excellent value, combining regular golf, expert coaching, and full use of the club’s impressive off-course facilities.

Although Academy membership is offered on a one-year basis, those who progress quickly will be encouraged to upgrade to full membership when ready. The programme is overseen by our professional team in the pro shop, who monitor playing standards, allocate handicaps, and assess readiness for advancement.

The Academy has already helped hundreds of new golfers learn the game in a relaxed and supportive environment, while making new friends along the way as they work towards full membership.

At Coombe Wood Golf Club, we offer a warm welcome to visitors and societies, with our green fees providing excellent value for money.

Visitors are welcome to play throughout the week and are encouraged to make full use of our outstanding facilities, including the changing rooms and pro shop. A selection of hot and cold drinks, refreshments, and snacks is available, while our clubhouse catering offers a comprehensive range of meals in a comfortable setting.

All visitors are kindly asked to familiarise themselves with the club’s dress code. On the course, jeans, T-shirts, football or rugby shirts, and trainers are not permitted.

Tee times should be booked directly via our website at www.coombewoodgolf.com, where discounts are available for three-ball and four-ball bookings. We recommend calling in advance to ensure no competitions are taking place at the time you wish to play. While our splendid course is reason enough to become part of Coombe Wood Golf Club, the club also enjoys a vibrant and welcoming social scene. Our members are renowned for their friendliness and, when not striving to improve their handicap, enjoy spending time together in relaxed and sociable surroundings.

An extensive and varied programme of events is organised throughout the year, designed to offer something for everyone, whatever their interests or tastes.

Members come together to celebrate occasions such as Guy Fawkes Night on the course, while New Year’s Eve is a highlight of the calendar, featuring a special sit-down meal followed by dancing and celebrations to welcome the year ahead.

Our catering is highly regarded, and many social events provide the perfect opportunity to enjoy the excellent food prepared by our talented team. Live bands and singers are always popular, alongside regular quiz nights, barbecues, and comedy evenings — all of which are well attended and thoroughly enjoyed.

How to Find Us

From London – Leave the Kingston Bypass (A3) at the Robin Hood Gate roundabout, signposted Kingston. Continue up Kingston Hill and down into George Road (sharp left at the Kingston Lodge Hotel). The car park is 150m on the left, with the clubhouse on the right.

From South – Leave the A3 at the Kingston A238 exit and turn left into Coombe Lane. After approximately 500m, turn right into Warren Road (barrier attended). After 150m, turn left into George Road. Continue for 400m, the clubhouse will be on the left, with the car park on the right.

Public Transport – The nearest railway station is Norbiton railway station, which is less than one mile away. Services run frequently from central London, with an estimated journey time of approximately 25–40 minutes.
