Chiltern Forest GolF Club

Chiltern Forest Golf Club offers one of the best courses in Buckinghamshire, challenging golfers of all abilities.

welCome

We have a wonderful parkland course carved from through the forest, with breathtaking views. The holes are spread across the hills and vales, threading through the trees, making each one a unique experience.

As well as our wonderful course, we are also proud to offer hospitality of the highest standard. We have a renowned restaurant, as well as a well-stocked bar and function rooms available for hire.

history

Chiltern Forest Golf Club is situated by Wendover Woods on the north edge of the Chiltern Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Golf was first played here over 100 years ago, when most of the Halton area was owned by the Rothschild banking dynasty.

At the start of the 20th century motor racing enthusiasts completed in hill climb events on Aston Hill, the road adjacent to the golf course. It was from these events that the motor manufacturer Aston Martin took its name. A plaque commemorating this can be seen in the woods above the course.

Around the time of the First World War the land around Halton, including the golf course, was acquired by the War Office as a military training camp and later became RAF Halton. During the Second World War the famous golf professional Sir Henry Cotton, while stationed at RAF Halton, had a key role in improving the golf course including extending it to nine holes.

Throughout the 1950s civilians were allowed to play the course at a cost of 6d and as the numbers playing gradually increased they formed their own club at the course. The first clubhouse was a modest wooden hut beside what is now the first tee.

The golf course was eventually acquired from the Ministry of Defence and Chiltern Forest Golf Club came into being as a members’ club. In 1977, a new clubhouse was constructed and in 1998 this was extended to further improve facilities for members and guests.

During the 1980s and 1990s the golf course was gradually extended using land purchased from the Forestry Commission where the current third, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th holes are now located.

history

This was followed by development on additional land generously donated by Mr Wren Stewart, our neighbouring farmer and former club president, allowing the course to be extended by a further two holes and to become the 18-hole course you see today.

The 18-hole course was officially opened in 1992 with a pro-celebrity competition to mark the occasion. Work continues to improve the golf course under the expert guidance of head green keeper Steve Horwood. In February 2013 the clubhouse bar, restaurant and pro-shop areas were refurbished to provide a bright and comfortable environment for our members, visitors and guests.

about the C ourse

We offer a challenging woodland course that will test golfers of all abilities. Our course ensures every hole is different and we are constantly improving elements on our course to enhance your golfing experience.

The 8th hole at Chiltern Forest since undergoing a transformation is one of the most iconic par 3s in the county!

We now have a breathtaking amphitheatre style green within the escarpment. This new green is two-tiered and double the size of the original.

A hole-by-hole course tour video is available on our website.

C ourse tour ( hole by hole )

Hole 1 – Par 4, 251 yards

First impressions count and the first hole at Chiltern Forest will entice you from the outset. You will need to decide which club to use at this short downhill!, 250-yard, par 4.

Remember, when it comes to club selection you will need to take into account the bunkers either side to ensure you get your round off to a good start.

Hole 2 – Par 4, 353 yards

Set out in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the second hole lets you appreciate the setting of this magnificent golf course. The tee is high over a valley below to an uphill fairway and the green beyond.

Hole 3 – Par 3, 172 yards

This par 3 hole has recently been remodelled to ensure golfers have the best possible experience. This hole has a raised green which is easily missed on the left and at the front. Any wayward shots to the right will end up in the woodland.

Hole 4 – Par 5, 476 yards

This long par 5 starts with a narrow exit from the tee to a slight dogleg left, with the fairway dropping away to the right. With a long narrow green guarded by bunkers either side you will need to ensure you are on form to beat the challenge this hole represents.

Hole 5 – Par 4, 313 yards

This hole is considered a straight-forward uphill hole with no bunkers. It is a chance to appreciate the setting which Chiltern Forest provides with stunning distance views back towards Mentmore.

Hole 6 – Par 4, 303 yards

This hole is a contender for the title of signature hole. This par 4, 303 -yard hole demands a plan to negotiate the three bunkers guarding the green. Once you get onto the green, there is one test left – a final putting challenge.

C ourse tour ( hole by hole )

Hole 7 – Par 4, 343 yards

Hole 7 is a par 4, dogleg left and a hole where club selection is critical. A top tip for this hole is to ensure you don’t tee off too long as you’ll end up in the woods beyond the fairway and the ramp down to green will speed the ball through the green.

Hole 8 – Par 3, 137 yards

The new 8th hole means you have to play over the valley and navigate your way up the steep hill. That being said, this hole is not a walk in the park. The green is quite shallow so club selection is key, as is judging the sometimes strong crosswinds that can blow even the best-struck shot off course.

Hole 9 – Par 4, 424 yards

Finishing the front nine is this 424 yard that plays so much longer. This hole has its own challenges which include an uphill incline, leading nicely onto the back nine holes of your round.

Hole 10 – Par 4, 375yds

Hole 10 is 379 yards and invites you to drive long down a picturesque fairway. Just be aware of the out-of-bounds to the left and woodland down the right.

Hole 11 – Par 4, 305 yards

This demanding par 4 hole will test your accuracy as a blind shot is required to get to the green. What type of golfer are you? Are you a risky golfer who will play a long straight drive to the green, or will you play safe as laying up might be the safer option?

Hole 12 – Par 5, 536 yards

This par 5 hole is set in the lowest part of the golf course and gives golfers a big fairway to aim at off the elevated tee. There is a narrow entry to a fast green that slopes right-to-left making it a difficult approach to end up below the hole.

C ourse tour ( hole by hole )

Hole 13 – Par 4, 336 yards

This is a stunning hole. Your tee shot must be kept to the left side of the fairway but avoiding the big trees on the left. You then get the best view into this tucked away green as anything to the right will be blocked by the overhanging trees. The green has two tiers and it is important you find the tier that the flag is on or you will face a difficult putt across the green.

Hole 14 – Par 4, 353 yards

This par 4 hole requires a straight but not necessarily long blind drive down the middle to avoid woodland on either side. Your second shot will then need to go straight to a raised green that slopes front-to-back.

Hole 15 – Par 3, 116 yards

This hole is a short par 3 uphill hole to a raised green that demands a solid strike to ensure you reach the putting surface. Short of the green will leave a tricky chip up the bank to the green that slopes front-toback.

Hole 16 – Par 4, 372 yards

This par 4, stroke index 1hole lives up to status as the toughest hole on the course. An accurate tee shot is required through the narrow gap to the base of the hill. The green can’t be seen as it is over the brow of the rise.

Hole 17 – Par 3, 213 yards

This hole is a stunning long par 3 and is one of the golf course’s

original holes. The hole starts off with a shot from tee to green down a narrow fairway that slopes left-to-right to an even narrower target. Roman Rafferty told us to never change the hole. It is a true challenge even for low handicappers.

Hole 18 – Par 4, 312 yards

Finally back to the top of the course to finish with this cracking par 4.

There is plenty to think about here. Too far right off the tee risks being out of bounds or a shot to the green from the bank above the fairway. Too far left and you’ll be back down on the 17th. The fairway has two longitudinal levels, the lower level often feeding down into the bunker. The approach shot to the green is all uphill often from hanging lies to the green above you.

“Dan was very professional and his attention to detail was second to none. He was very thorough and I now feel that all my electrics are safe. Would not hesitate to recommend him.” Jane, Buckinghamshire

“Nothing was too much trouble. Dan would always check we were happy and adjust as necessary. I highly recommend him and will definitely be asking him back for any future jobs.” Sally, Buckinghamshire
