It is my privilege to welcome you to Birstall Golf Club. The club was founded in 1901 and now offers possibly the best parkland course in Leicestershire. However, it does not stop there. Our clubhouse is a hive of activity and has one of the warmest and liveliest sports bars which includes satellite TV, organised poker, bridge, snooker and darts. Our bars offer a range of guest ales and much more providing an atmosphere unequalled anywhere in the Midlands. The course and the clubs history are outlined later in the brochure. To add a personal comment, having been a member for over 40 years the course condition continues to be second to none. Offering manicured fairways, established trees, ponds and a variety of golďŹ ng hazards you are sure to have an enjoyable game at Birstall. Each year the club is privileged to host the Midlands PGA competition which has been televised on Sky in recent years, as well as other prestige events. Birstall is very much a members club with a family atmosphere. Whether it be the course, bars or restaurant our facilities are of a very high standard ensuring our members can be proud of their club. We offer a range of membership categories to suit any pocket. There is also regular member competitions, team games, social golf and turn up and play roll ups that cater for every category of golfer.

A Brief History

A Brief History Birstall Golf Club was founded at a meeting in Leicester’s Bell Hotel, 26 Humberstone Gate, Leicester with applications for membership being accepted from December 3rd that year, the intention being to prepare for the 1901 season. The initial organisational structure involved setting up the Fosse Golf Company (Leicester) Ltd as a holding company for the Birstall Golf Club. The Fosse was incorporated on May 19th 1903. The original directors of the Fosse Golf Company included Charles Bennion, who was elected its Chairman. He was a prominent local businessman and benefactor who – in 1928 – donated Bradgate Park for the beneﬁt and recreation of the people of Leicestershire. While the opening of the course was a signiﬁcant one for the development of golf in Leicestershire, it was also a major one for the village of Birstall, which – according to the Census of 1901 – had just 611 inhabitants, compared to 12,216 (2011 Census). To the west of the main Leicester to Loughborough road were mainly farmsteads, although the Belgrave and Birstall Station on the Great Central Railway had opened in 1899, which helped fuel the village’s swift development. The opening of the railway station was very fortuitous for the Club: railway companies often assisted in the development of facilities and businesses near their stations, presumably in the expectation that they would return the compliment by becoming regular customers.

The Ladies’ Section made a fast start – holding their ﬁrst meeting on May 12th 1902, when ladies attended Council for the ﬁrst time. Mrs Pierpoint and Miss Brewin were elected join Honorary Secretaries. The early minutes also record that, from January 1st 1909, the Links were to be let to Birstall Golf Club on the condition that gentlemen paid three guineas annual subscription, with the entry fee being two guineas. Ladies were admitted on the same terms as men. Further lady members were admitted after election on an annual subscription of two guineas with no entry fee, but were not permitted to play on Thursdays, Saturdays or other competition days. One point of note is that no Sunday play was allowed at that time, except for members of a club formed especially for that purpose, which paid the Fosse not less than £150 per year for the privilege. Birstall has always had a large number of trophies and cups, which is one of the reasons that the club has been at the forefront of innovation when it comes to organising competitions. Many of these cups and trophies have been donated by past Captains and Presidents. To these the club has added others bought for particular purposes or to mark special occasions: Coronation Trophies; Jubilee Cup; Novices; Club Championship etc.

The outbreak of the First World War naturally curtailed golﬁng activities, although the Club continued to plan for the future, with the building of a new clubhouse proposed, with ﬁnance being raised by means of a 5% debenture.

A Brief History The Club continued to be a popular venue for visiting Societies, with the proximity of Birstall and Belgrave Station a major boon. In 1926 The British Pharmaceutical Conference concluded a week of debate and discussion in Leicester with a day of sporting activities. In the morning delegates caught the train from Great Central Street Station for the 15 minute journey to Belgrave and Birstall. The Club’s ambitions continued to grow, with an Extraordinary General Meeting in 1934 debating the issue of buying the course from Major Robertson Aikman (Director) and his family, from whom it was then leased. The proposed purchase price was £8,500. 1938 was a crucial year for the club, with a meeting between Birstall Golf Club Council and the Fosse Golf Company Ltd agreeing that the club would assume responsibility for all expenses in connection with the upkeep of the club premises and the care of the course with effect from 3rd November 1938. In consideration of this the Fosse agreed to reduce the annual rental to £625, being the amount sufﬁcient to cover the mortgage interest payable by the Fosse, and any other incidental costs which may arise. As a result of this the Fosse became a “holding company’’ leasing the course to the Golf Club, with the cost of running the company being charged to the golf club as a rental. With the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939, competitions were suspended with bridge and whist drives being held in the Mayor’s Parlour with proceeds going to the “Wool Fund for the Services”. The most notable movement on Birstall Golf Course during the Second World War was the loss of the back nine to agriculture: such was the nation’s need for food that all open spaces were commandeered to the war effort. So instead of hosting autumn tournaments, the back nine at Birstall went under the plough.

In the immediate post-war years Birstall’s proximity to Leicester paid dividends, with the 1948 County Championship being held at the course because of petrol restrictions. The Ladies minutes record the fact that teams used to travel to away matches in a convoy of taxis to minimise expense. Birstall players were soon putting the club’s name back on the rolls of honour in county competitions, with the club winning the Men’s County Foursomes in 1952. In the mid-50s a major feature on the village of Birstall was published in the Leicester Graphic magazine, which spoke of the club’s course and reputation in glowing terms: “Birstall Golf Club, on high ground above the old village, has long been recognised as having one of the best 18 hole courses in the county”. In 1981 the County won the Anglian League for the ﬁrst time, with club players being fully involved in the matches. In the same year Keith Barry won the Sports Mercury Cup. A curious entry in the Ladies minutes records that they objected to the fact that a cat had made its home at the Club. Around the same time one of the course’s more unusual features, the steam railway, was re-opened by the Great Central Railway: there are not many courses in Britain where a player’s concentration can be shattered by the toot of a passing steam train!

A Brief History 1984 saw the construction of new tees at the 3rd, 13th, 14th and 17th holes, with the practice ground being designated as Out of Bounds, which led the course’s SSS to be raised from 69 to 70. In 1985 the Club’s dress code was relaxed, with the Men permitted to remove their jackets in the main clubhouse from May onwards. Birstall Golf Club hosts the Midlands Open every year which is televised by Sky; top professionals from around the Midlands make this a ‘must see’ event in the Birstall calendar. Birstall also hosts many County events each year showcasing the best amateur talent from around the County. In 2015 Jack Merry, Scott Wormleighton and Steve Sansome won the Corah Shield; this qualiﬁed Birstall to represent Leicestershire & Rutland in the Champion Club Tournament which took place in Northumberland. The team won which enabled them to represent England in the European Men’s Club Trophy in Cyprus! Our 1st Team continues to be one of the best in the County; a testament to this great course!

Hole by Hole 1st - The tight tree-lined first epitomises all that Birstall GC has to offer. You can often hear the noise of the steam trains on the Great Central Railway to the left of the first. Beware of the whistle as you prepare to take your first shot; anything left could well be on its way to Loughborough. The tee shot should be threaded down the right hand side of the fairway, to leave a short iron in to a green that slopes from front to back. 2nd - The second, although simple at first glance can produce birdies and double bogies. To carry the two strategically placed bunkers in the middle of the fairway requires a teeshot of 240 yards. The sensible play would be to lay up short of the bunkers and then take a short iron in to the green which slopes from back to front and left to right. While waiting to putt out on the green, take a long look across the city and out towards Market Harborough. 3rd - From the back tee the third is all of its 432 yards despite the green being slightly downhill. The perfect drive will favour the right side of the marker post and will leave a long iron or hybrid in to the green that sits at angle to the fairway. Two hidden bunkers will trap any shot that bails out to the right whilst an out-of-bounds on the left runs the length of the hole. A four is always a good score and it can be worth taking your chances with a pitch and putt par to avoid any trouble.

4th - A short par 3 that is deceiving as it plays uphill and is often into the wind. The large green has many undulations so club selection can vary between three clubs. Four bunkers protect this green against any wayward tee-shot, making a par difficult to find. The green slopes from back to front with a large shelf in the middle. 5th - Tree lined par 4 that runs along the boundary of the course. The ideal tee shot will favour the right side of the fairway, leaving a mid/long iron in to the green. Three bunkers protect this large green, with two deep bunkers to the right especially punishing as any thinned shot can clear the boundary fence never to be seen again. The green has subtle breaks but does represent a birdie chance. Tip is to aim for the middle of the green as you will not be too far away. 6th - First of Birstallâ€™s long par 5â€™s, the longest hitters will need to aim over the marker post to be within striking distance of the green in two. For most a tee shot that favours the right side will open the hole to present a large green with trouble either side. A good lay up to 100 yards will leave a straight shot in to a green that slopes back to front and left to right. This hole does represent a good birdie chance but beware the pond to the right of the green.

Hole by Hole 7th - A long par 3 that plays slightly uphill to a narrow green that slopes back to front. Three bunkers protect this green with one positioned 20 yards short for any errant tee shot. This long green can require three different clubs depending on wind direction and a par here is a good score. 8th - One of the most challenging tee shots on the course. The longest hitters will aim over the right edge of the fairway to set up a mid-iron in to a small green perched at the end of the fairway. Most golfers will aim over the marker post to set up a long iron or hybrid in to the green. Favour short right with your second shot if in doubt as this represents the easiest chance of making par. A deep bunker left and right will catch any shot not sweetly struck. Any misses beyond the green can leave tricky chips with the green placed at eye-level to the golfer. 9th - A short par 4 that can yield a birdie with two well-placed shots; the longest hitters will aim to drive the green, with a tee shot down the left feeding in to the green. Any drives that drift right will finish in the trees or green side bunker short. The second shot plays downhill and any shot landing short of the green will kick forward. The green slopes from back to front and consists of two tiers. Make a note of the pin position when you tee off on the first. 10th - A medium length par 3 that can present a birdie chance with a well struck iron. The green is protected by a pond to the far right and three bunkers. Two bunkers have been placed 10 yards short of the green to punish any short shots. Favour the left side of the green to present the best chance of getting up and down for a par.

11th - Medium length par 4 with all the trouble around the green. The fairway slopes from right to left and can be very firm in the summer. The second shot requires skill and accuracy of the highest level, a bunker short left presents the first danger, whilst a second bunker to the right will catch those who push their shots. Greenside there is a pond to the right and a deep bunker to the left. Finally the green slopes slightly back to front and right to left; any second shot to the heart of the green will present a reasonable birdie chance. 12th - First of two short par 4s that should represent birdie chances. The 12th requires a tee shot that favours the left side of the fairway as the slope will gently roll your ball into the middle. There is a ditch that runs the length of the fairway on the right; two pot bunkers to the left and a large bunker to the right offer protection to a green that slopes from back to front with the front portion of the green sloping severely. 13th - A narrow landing area on to the ridge and furrow fairway can make this simple tee shot more challenging than it looks. A tee shot that is aimed at the flag down the middle of the fairway will present a second shot in to a green that is protected by two pot bunkers. Any golfer that finds themselves wide of these bunkers will be left with a very tricky up and down for par. The green slopes from back to front and feeds in to the centre, again any shot that finds the heart of the green will represent a good birdie chance.

14th - A dogleg at 90° that requires an accurate tee shot to the marker post. Tee shots left will find thick trees to contend with, whilst those flying right will struggle to reach the green in two. The green is one of the largest on the course and is protected by two bunkers, a ditch to the right and a steep bank at the back. Finding the middle of this green can still offer a putt of over 15ft so club selection is imperative. 15th - The start of the ‘Birstall Mile’, the toughest four hole closing stretch in the county. If you look to the right from the tee box you can see Bradgate Park and Old John. This wide fairway should be easy to find, however any tee shots right can find the out-of-bounds while tee shots left can be smothered by the trees. The ridge and furrow fairway can offer an awkward stance for the second shot. The green is large and protected by one bunker either side and whilst the green is very receptive any shot landing short can run through the green. A par here is always a good score. 16th - The hardest hole on the course requires shot shaping, skill, accuracy and a little luck to find this green into two. The tee shot should be aimed at the marker post, with the longest hitters aiming to the right of the marker post to open up the second to the green. In the height of summer short of the green can be firm and fast, punishing any shot not carried on to the green. The green is further protected by a deep bunker to the

Hole by Hole left and a bunker at an angle facing away from the green on the right. The green slopes from back to front and any shot into the middle of the green can still leave a tricky twoputt.

17th - From the back tees this hole can measure well over 200 yards and can destroy any good score. Depending on wind direction this hole can play very differently from one day to the next; many take a driver to reach the edge in the toughest conditions. Outof-bounds all down the left forces most to spray their tee shot to the right. Here poplars and bunkers sit in wait ready to devour any stray ball. If you are protecting a good score, a tee shot short of the green can offer an easy bogey that will not wreck your card. This large green protected by three bunkers slopes from back to front, a tee shot finding the middle of the green will offer a reasonable putt at birdie. 18th - The final hole and a long par 5 to finish the course. The out of bounds down the left encourages most golfer to aim right and the perfect tee shot will finish to the right of the marker post. The longest hitters can try to reach the green in two, the green plays slightly downhill and any shot on line will run on to the green. With their second shots most golfers will aim to avoid the fairway bunker that is placed on the right at 150 yards from the green. The green is protected short left by a ditch that encroaches on the fairway and two bunkers either side. This is the largest green on the course with many slopes and undulations, finding the correct third of the green can make a two putt so much easier.

Course Development Over the last six years Course Manager Chris Bates and his team have strived to turn Birstall Golf Club into one of the best courses in Leicester. The team have built new tees and new bunkers and added new ditches and ponds. New drainage has also been added to the course ensuring high quality fairways and greens all year round. This constant work and improvements has greatly enhanced the visual effect of the course. Future developments include a short game practice area being built and new fairway bunkers on holes 12 and 15. The pond on hole 11 will also be reshaped to bring it more into play. We pride ourselves in presentation and are always trying to improve our course. Members Golf Members at Birstall Golf Club can enjoy a full programme of competitive golf throughout the year. There are fixtures against other clubs, together with in-house competitions that are to be enjoyed alongside fellow members. Some are for silverware; others are of a more social nature. There is always something to suit your handicap, age and golfing desire at Birstall Golf Club. Whether you are a competitive or social golfer, there is always plenty of time available to play to suit your personal requirement. Birstall offers extensive competitions providing opportunities to achieve and improve a handicap, a chance to enjoy the company of members from this and other clubs, or just to play socially with friends. Memberâ€™s matches are very sociable occasions, with the chance to catch up with old friends being as eagerly anticipated as the opportunity to play golf itself. Men - The Men’s Section at Birstall is extremely active and strong on competitive golf, both within the club and with other golf clubs. This includes a very busy schedule of medals, stablefords and team events. There are a number of events throughout the year for the members to enjoy. These include Captain’s Day and President’s Day and are usually followed by a function in the evening for all to enjoy. We have several teams who each have matches against local clubs throughout the summer: the 1st Team, 2nd team, the Combined Team, Under 35s Team, Senior Team and the Mixed Team. Away matches provide a low cost way to play other courses, make new friends in the local area and, most importantly, the opportunity for you to represent our Club.

Ladies - The Ladies Section at Birstall Golf Club caters for a full range of players and their abilities; encouraging new members with fun competitions throughout the year. Not only do we have internal cup and trophy competitions, with several taking place at the weekends enabling our business ladies to compete, we also take part in Scratch and Handicap League matches - one of which is the Taskers Trophy that encourages and supports young golfers throughout the Midlands.

Members Golf We keenly participate in the Ladies County Foursomes and the Mixed County Foursomes. We also enjoy Invitation and Charity days which often involve Bridge Drives for any who wish to take part. Each year we have a Lady Captainâ€™s weekend away where we stay at and play different courses which is always good fun! We also have Exchange Days with various local clubs. Finally we have a very energetic Social Club who enthusiastically organize and get involved in Club activities.

Juniors - At Birstall Golf Club we welcome juniors of all ages and standards to come and have a fun, safe and positive experience playing golf and thoroughly encourage boys and girls to utilise the Club and its facilities. We always welcome new junior members. You will have the support of our Junior Organiser and Junior Welfare Officer throughout your time as a junior here. Both new and experienced golfers will have the opportunity to learn new techniques with lessons available from our golf professional. We offer heavily discounted, affordable membership fees for juniors and a Junior Affiliated membership designed for parents and guardians who would like to play with a junior member.

Seniors - The seniors is a strong section of the Club open to all male members over the age of 55. We are very active with regular midweek matches against other clubs from Leicestershire and neighbouring counties from April to September and monthly fun or competitive competitions. The seniors also meet frequently for roll-ups and are a friendly group always ready to welcome new members. We hold a Seniors Open every year which is always well supported by Birstall members and those from other clubs. As well as being welcome to enter the competitions run by the main section of the club, the seniors also enjoy our own competitions throughout the year.

Reciprocal & Society Golf An added benefit of being a member at Birstall Golf Club is the chance to enjoy discounted green fee rates at numerous golf courses locally and across the United Kingdom. We enjoy reciprocal golfing arrangements with several neighbouring courses such as Kettering, Oakmere Park, Ruddington Grange, Belton Park and Matlock. We have also created the â€˜1901 Clubâ€™ designed for clubs founded in 1901 such as ourselves. Dave Clark - PGA Head Professional Dave Clark our Head Professional has been with us for over 25 years. He was Midland Region PGA Professional of the year in 2010 for his charity work and Midland Region PGA Captain in 2012. Dave offers tuition and advice, as well as operating a fully stocked outlet for equipment and golfing apparel. Dave is also a Motocaddy service agent and an authorised Battery Test Centre. Jon Williamson - PGA Professional Jon Williamson is the new PGA Professional; he will be working alongside David Clark our Head Pro. Originally from Carlisle in Cumbria, Jon started playing golf at the age of 2, as his father was on the committee at Brampton Golf Club. Jon started out as a 16 year old probationer at Stonyholme Golf Course, where he still holds the course record today (63). He is their youngest Club Champion, and also went on to defend his title for the first time in a decade. Jon also played for the county and gained selection for the England boys team.

Having been elected to full PGA status, he has been playing competitive golf in the North, Midlands, South regions, The Euro Pro Tour and recently reached the final stages for the Open Championship.

The spacious lounge bar, with its view across the tree-lined fairway of the 1st and across the 9th hole, provides the perfect spot to relax, take some refreshment and reflect on your game. Both our lounge bar and our sports bar are well stocked with a wide selection of beers, wines and spirits and a choice of soft drinks. Hot and cold food is served daily seven days a week with breakfast, lunch and snacks available to eat in the sports bar, lounge or dining room, a large comfortable room looking out on to the putting green. BGC Social Side We have a very active social committee here at Birstall providing quite a varied range of activities and functions. There are several quizzes dotted around the year, mainly outside the main golfing period, with sandwiches & nibbles provided to enhance the evening. We have a regular Ascot evening where you can buy and name a horse, giving you a pass to enter the ‘Owner’s Enclosure’ for a pre-race glass of Prosecco! After some of our golfing events there could be a band, disco or even a BBQ, weather permitting, where people can relax on the patio area with a drink and freshly cooked food. A group of members get together on Tuesday nights throughout the year to play a friendly game of Texas Hold ‘Em poker, if there is such a thing as friendly poker! On Monday nights during the winter months we have 2 darts teams which compete in the local leagues; the first team actually won the Premier League in 2015! The calendar year finishes with a vibrant New Year’s Eve buffet and disco or live band, which is always hugely popular.
