WELCOME
IN THE 30 YEARS OR SO THAT I HAVE BEEN WRITING, SPEAKING AND GENERALLY PONTIFICATING ABOUT FOOTBALL THERE ARE TWO QUESTIONS I HAVE BEEN ASKED MORE THAN ANY OTHER AND THEY COVER BOTH EXTREMES OF THE FOOTBALLING PENDULUM.
The first one is, whether Messi or Ronaldo is the greatest player of all time, and the second, why I feel such a passion for Biggleswade United, the club I am so proud to be chairman of?
It’s about community, acceptance, the offering of an open door and a heartfelt welcome to everyone who loves this game, regardless of age, gender, ability, ethnicity, sexuality or religious beliefs.

And while it gets rather tedious talking about the former, I never tire of speaking to just about anyone, anywhere in the world prepared to listen to me going on about this club that I love so much. The reason for that is simple because, in the words of Terry Pratchett, “The thing about football - the important thing about football - is that it is not just about football.”

And the reason for that is that, at its best, grassroots football has the power to make positive contributions to the local communities that it represents. It can help to create a sporting culture and unite youngsters, coaches, parents, fans and club officials into building a solid, social fabric throughout its community.
From the moment I stepped into our clubhouse after the then chairman, Chris Lewis asked me if I wanted to get involved with the club, I knew I had come home. From the time that I witnessed first hand the tireless efforts of club stalwarts like Tracey James, Heather Rennie and my dear friend Peter Dean, who is no longer with us and who I miss every day, my love affair with this wonderful club began.
We will never be world beaters. Our men’s first team plays at Level Nine (Step Five) of the footballing pyramid while our reserves are at Level 11. We have two senior women’s sides with our Red team playing at Level 6 and our Blue team at Level 7.
But here in beautiful Bedfordshire we have always known that be it Barcelona or Biggleswade United, it is the same game and we would love to welcome you to the club in whatever capacity you think would suit you best.
We are always looking for new volunteers to help in any way they can, be it with the media, the tea bar or generally helping out on match days. We will always find you something to do and if you will like to join us please feel free to contact me on biggleswadeunited@gmail.com.
That said, if your primary reason for wanting to join us is all about the hunt for trophies and titles then we probably aren’t the club for you. Denis Bergkamp - a superstar who knew more about football success and glory that most - summed it up when he said that, “When you start supporting a football club, you don’t support it because of the trophies, or a player, or history, you support it because you found yourself somewhere there; found a place where you belong.”
Same game, same rules, same passion, albeit at a different level.

In fashion parlance, if Barcelona represent to many what is the epitome of style, elegance and haute couture then here at Biggleswade United we are proud to be the comfy slippers and the baggy, battered cardigan of the game. Both have their place, neither is more important, nor more relevant, than the other.
And here’s the thing. The really top players understand this perfectly because they know more than anyone that passion and commitment is set in stone and does not rise or fall commensurately according to the level that the game is being played at. While covering World Cups and Barcelona I spoke on many occasions to former Argentine skipper, Javier Mascherano who knew of my role with the club and who never failed to ask me, without a hint of being patronising or ironic, about the current fortunes of my beloved Biggleswade United.
But the best example I can give about it being all about the game, rather than the level that it is played at, concerns Argentine winger Rene Houseman and an incident that occurred during the 1978 World Cup that he went on to win.
Born and raised in grinding poverty Houseman is generally accepted as one of the greatest wingers in the history of Argentine football. During the 1978 tournament Rene suddenly went AWOL shortly before a vital game.

One of Menotti’s assistants drove him to where the game was being played and he was relieved to see his star winger sitting on the subs bench. “What are you doing here?” Menotti asked, as in , “Why aren’t you at the training camp?”
Rene misunderstood thinking his coach was asking him why a player of his level and stature had been relegated to the bench.
“Can’t you see how well our winger is playing?” he replied. “It’s no wonder I can’t get on,” he told an incredulous Menotti. Try telling Rene that this end of week kickabout between two town rivals was not as important as any game he ever played for his country.
BIGGLESWADE UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB WAS RE-FORMED ON THE 16TH JULY 1959. HOWEVER, LOCAL HISTORY RECORDS INDICATE THAT THERE WAS A BIGGLESWADE UNITED SIDE PLAYING AT SECOND MEADOW AS EARLY AS 1929.
Our first season (1959/60) saw us competing in Division Three of the North Herts. League (NHL). After 10 successful years in the NHL the club made the step up to South Midlands League (SML) football. But towards the end of a 15-year association with the SML the club began to struggle and after three years of finishing in the bottom three of Division One we sought fresh fields. The club joined the Herts. Senior but club continued to find the going tough. In 1986 we elected to return to local League football, joining the Bedford and
District Football League and began to build again.
The appointment of Brian Swords as first team manager in 87/88 proved to be the turning point in the club’s fortunes. During the next ten years the club achieved a tremendous amount of success on and off the football pitch.
Our record of League and Cup honours speak for themselves but aligned to this a great deal of work went on behind the scenes to match the onfield success. The club now boasts one of the best clubhouse and ground
facilities in the Mid-Bedfordshire area. The success of the club also attracted many new players as well as commanding a great deal of loyalty from those players who helped the club progress from Division Three of the Bedford and District League to County Senior Club status in just 15 years.

The 1995/96 season was the most successful in the club’s historywinning five major honours; the Beds Intermediate County Cup, Bedford and District League Championship, League Cup Championship and as the League’s representatives the club won the Beds. FA Centenary Cup. Having won every major Bedford League honour the club felt it was time to move on and made the decision to make the step up once again and returned to Division One of the SML. In an exceptionally successful first season we celebrated a Division One “double” by winning the Championship and the Division One Cup. We also retained the Beds. FA Intermediate County Cup, only the second club in the competition’s history to achieve this feat. To crown our success the club were awarded the SML Special Achievement Trophy in July 1997.
HISTORY
In the season 1997/98 we finally achieved Senior status. This was achieved not only through the endeavours of the players on the field but ultimately as a result of an extremely hard working committee. With the help of the Biggleswade Town Council a new stand was erected and perimeter fencing installed. And two seasons later the club erected floodlights and on the evening of 26th October 1999 we played our first-ever floodlit game at Second Meadow, Ryman League side Leighton Town were the visitors in the Bedfordshire Premier Cup.
The next eleven years saw the first team led by Steve “Snowy” Wright and under his management the club continued to enjoy a very high level of League and Cup success ultimately achieving promotion to the Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and with it the opportunity to compete in the FA Cup. And under Snowy the club made three Beds FA Senior Challenge Cup final appearances, winning two of the three with victories over Stotfold (4-1) and Leighton Town (1-0) but missed out in 2006/07 going down 2-0 to Dunstable Town. Snowy’s other cup successes came in the form of the Hunts Premier Cup, North Beds Charity Cup, Hinchingbrooke Cup, the SML Division One Cup and the SML Special Achievement Award once again. The end of the 2006 2007 saw Snowy step down as manager with his assistant, Nick Burton taking over the first team reins.
January 5th 2009 saw the club embark on further ambitious ground improvements. With financial backing from Biggleswade Town Council, Mid Beds District Council and the Football Foundation we installed a 260-seater stand, fully enclosed the ground with a double turnstile entrance and players’ secure walkway which raised the ground to Grade E status. After several years of stability in terms of

first team managers the next six years saw a regular turnover of first team and reserve team managers with Nick Burton, Dave Elkin and Phil Childs all taking over the first team reins for a time.
At the start of the 2013 2014 season we appointed Mick Reardon and Mark Royal as first team managers both of whom had enjoyed success as coaches at the higher levels of football. Their disciplined approach was quickly adhered to and responded to by the players and under their stewardship we achieved the highest Premier Division position in nine years and first silverware in seven years winning the North Beds Charity Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

In November 2014 the club took a further positive step to realise our ambitions with the appointment of Sky Sports Presenter and renowned author, Guillem Balague as Biggleswade United’s Club Chairman. Following Mick and Mark’s decision to step down at the end 2014 2015, Guillem was quick to act and recruited a new Head Coach in Cristian Colas Beccera. Cristian was assisted by former professional player, Stuart Bimson, and under their guidance the team finished in eighth spot in the Premier Division in 2017 2018 - the highest position in the club’s history. Having built a strong reputation for their outstanding coaching ability and playing philosophy Cristian and Stuart moved up to Step 3 level club, Staines Town, for the start of the 2018 2019 season. Guillem was again in search for a high quality coach and Jimmy Martin came highly recommended by his predecessor, Colas, who worked with Jimmy at Stevenage FC Academy. Jimmy was appointed Manager in May 2018 but he tendered his resignation in October 2018 having been offered a “hard to refuse” opportunity to take up a coaching role at Premier Division club Watford. Despite the setback the first team went on to record their highest ever League placing – a fourth spot in the Premier Division.
opportunity. However, in March 2020 the season was declared Null and Void by the FA after the devastating outbreak of the Coronavirus. The club were also to learn that Chris and Tishnan had accepted the offer to work at Step 4 and departed the club at short notice. Fortunately the club were able to call upon the services of former Head Coach Cristian Colas Cristian took the club to its highest ever position in the club’s history at the curtailment of the 20/21 season leaving us second in the table on PPG. The club applied for promotion to Step 4 but were unsuccessful. A double whammy came when the club were subjected to a lateral move to the Uhlsport United Counties League. The FA’s actions had a devastating effect on the club and we spent most of the 2021 2022 season at the foot of the table. But we rallied and secured Step 5 football on the final day of the season. The club have now
been re-instated in to the SML and with a strong squad will be looking to put that season’s nightmare in to a distant memory and push on to return as a top of the table club.

HISTORY
With the nightmare season confined to the history books we kicked on and finished a very creditable 8th in the Premier Division but the highlight of the season was achieving the best ever run in the FA Vase. Starting at the qualifying round stages we came through five rounds reaching the fourth round proper but fell to Coventry Sphinx. At the end of a great season Cristian Colas made the difficult decision to step down after 7 (-2) seasons as head coach.

Sadly though their tenure lasted just the one season and in May 2024 the club moved on with the appointment of Kane Dougherty who has enjoyed success at Shefford Town and Campton. Kane’s coaching team for the 2025 / 2026 season will comprise of Paul Donnelly, Ruben Ward-Lindsay James Taylor, Del Digweed, and Martin Russell.
Two United players came forward with the right experience, credentials and knowledge of the football world at this level and the next and the decision was felt to be the right one. Gareth Hunt, who had captained the side and had been instrumental in helping us through the difficult season, was

MEN’S FIRST TEAM
OUR ADULT MEN’S FIRST TEAM COMPETE AT STEP 5 OF THE ENGLISH FA NATIONAL LEAGUE SYSTEM AND ARE PLAYING MEMBERS OF THE SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION.
The league spans North London, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex and of course Bedfordshire. Our first team management team consists of Kane Dougherty (Manager), Paul Donnelly (Asst. Manager), Ruben Ward-Lindsay (Coach) Del Digweed (Goalkeeper Coach and oversight of men’s senior teams) and Kirsty Bateman-Foley (Physio).
In addition to League competition our first team also competes in the oldest and most prestigious cup competition in the world – The
Emirates FA Cup. For clubs at our level the road to Wembley starts as early as the first week of August and while a final is what dreams (and Hollywood films) are made of, our journey usually ends in mid-September. However, for our players, the mere joy of being able to claim that they play in the most prestigious and historic competition in the world, is the best way to start their season. Our best ever run in the competition came in 2016- 2017 when we lost 4-2 to Hitchin Town in the first round proper.
The team also compete in the Isuzu FA Vase and in 2023 achieved our best ever run in the national competition, reaching the last 32 losing out to a final 16 place to Coventry Sphinx.
The season 25/26 saw the team lose out on a play-off spot by one point despite holding a top five place in the league for the whole of the season and losing only six league games in the whole season.

BIGGLESWADE UNITED CAN ATTEST TO BEING A PIONEERING
CLUB WITHIN THE WOMEN’S GAME AND HAS A STRONG HISTORY OF SUPPORTING AND PROMOTING THE WOMEN’S
GAME – A HISTORY THAT GOES BACK TO THE 1980S WHEN THE POPULARITY AND SUPPORT OF WOMEN’S FOOTBALL WAS FAR LOWER THAN IT IS NOW.
The club were proud to have one of the most successful Women’s teams of that time with players representing at a National Level and the South East of England representative side. Alongside historic teams like Doncaster Belles, Southampton Ladies, Lowestoft, Friends of Fulham, Arsenal, Millwall Lionesses and Spurs, Biggleswade United were leading lights in the foundations of the game we see today.
However, what made us distinct from these clubs however, is that even then, the Women’s team was fully integrated and on a completely equal footing with the men’s section within the club. This is the same for today’s thriving women’s section of the club. That is why we were one of the first clubs at our level to put an end to the iniquitous situation that thought it was just that our women’s senior side should pay
subs while our men’s senior teams played for free.
Our current women’s section was re-introduced in 2017 to enable local women and young girls to join the growing number of females participating in football. It is also our ambition that our successful Under 16 Girls team will find a clear pathway to the women’s senior team.
Our women’s team play all of their home games on a Sunday afternoon at our main ground “The Verdant Stadium. They are currently members of the Eastern Region Women’s Football League and compete at the sixth tier of the Women’s Football Pyramid. The League consists of teams from the counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk so travel is extensive. The team also compete in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup competition.
The club are as committed as we are ambitious for the women’s section at the club with the aim of our team rising two levels above where they are at the moment within five years.

THE VIEWS OF CHAIRMAN, GUILLEM BALAGUE
The importance of youth football, especially at our level, is impossible to overstate. Here at Biggleswade United our primary aim has never been about producing great footballers, but rather about helping to transform, through the medium of football, enthusiastic youngsters into decent, focused adults.
There are, of course, those people out there that will be more than happy to raise your hopes - and lower your bank account - by promising you that your children are precisely what the footballing world has been waiting for. They almost certainly aren’t.
It has never been about just winning trophies and titles, although if that happens along the way it is a welcome bonus. Nor should playing for any of our youth teams be seen as a potential pathway to footballing fame and fortune because it isn’t.
To even begin to have any chance of making it to the very top you first of all need to be taken on by any one of the top academies and not those money-grabbing, dream-shattering shysters who exploit youngsters and those parents keen to enjoy vicarious success via their children.

Believe me, if your child is good enough then you won’t have to go to the big clubs’ academies, they will almost certainly come to you.
I have no figures about girls’ football but figures published last year showed that of the 1.5 million boys who played organised youth football at any given time in England, only around 180 were signed professionally by a Premier League club. That’s 0.012%!
And that is just the beginning. Around 50% of all players will leave the academy system before they are 16. Recent data has shown that of all former elite academy players 97% never go on to play in the Premier League.
I always say that here at Biggleswade United we prefer to work to the old fashioned maxim that says that in football as in life you should only ever make promises you can keep, and then keep all those promises you make.
So far, so good especially under the magnificent stewardship of Our Heads of youth, Kayleigh and Josh Thomas. They work tirelessly to ensure that teams have the correct playing facilities and infrastructure to help the youth section to continue to grow and progress.
Our youth section consists of multiple teams, ranging from under 7s to under 18s and a strong team of
coaches, many of these boasting UEFA coaching qualifications.
Our youth football section provides a fun, safe, and inspiring environment for young players of all abilities to learn and grow. Whether taking their very first steps in football or developing advanced skills, every child is supported by qualified coaches who are passionate about the game and dedicated to player development.

RESERVE TEAM
BIGGLESWADE UNITED RESERVE TEAM COMPETE IN THE PREMIER DIVISION OF THE BEDFORDSHIRE COUNTY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (STEP 7 OF THE ENGLISH FA NATIONAL LEAGUE SYSTEM FOOTBALL PYRAMID).
The team’s head coach Is Jim Starling and he is assisted by Darren Hunt and Lewis Digweed.
The team is predominantly made up of players that range from 16 to 21 years of age as we are committed to providing a clear pathway for young players to progress from youth football to adult football. The team play their home games at the club’s main stadium – The Verdant Stadium – on Saturday afternoons and train twice per week at the new floodlit 3G football facility at Stratton
School, Biggleswade on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The team’s kit is proudly sponsored by Flawless Landscapes.

OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS BIGGLESWADE UNITED HAS
EXTENDED ITS REACH IN TO THE WIDER COMMUNITY. THE CLUB HAS INTRODUCED THREE MORE TEAMS TO ACHIEVE ITS AIM TO BE THE MOST INCLUSIVE CLUB IN THE LOCAL AREA.
We have a Biggleswade United Veterans Team that provides opportunities for players over the age of 35 who can continue to enjoy the social aspects of participating in football as well as continuing to stay fit and healthy.
In 2025 Biggleswade United became the first club to introduce Walking Football. Walking Football is a bespoke, non-contact sport created in 2011 for the older generation, with ageappropriate and very simple rules designed with health and safety as the paramount consideration. Our team meets every Monday for one
hour at Stratton School 3G facility and is sponsored by Pelly’s Solicitors.
From 2026 Biggleswade United will be working in partnership with Stratton School SEND team to deliver weekly football sessions for its pupils. The sessions are led by a qualified coach who is sponsored by the club in partnership with Pelly’s Solicitors.
The sessions at Stratton school are focused on providing fun, engaging opportunities for SEND pupils to aid their development and give them a safe place to play football and gain confidence on the pitch.

There’s no escaping the fact that these days social media is probably the single most important factor in helping to promote football clubs, especially those that operate at grassroots level.
We have a social media team based both locally and internationally that enables us to share updates about what is going on at the club, on and off the pitch, engage with the community, promote events, and even find sponsors and in the past has helped us bring in new personnel be they players or other people involved behind the scenes.

IN JULY 2025 TRACEY JAMES AND HEATHER RENNIE WERE RECOGNISED BY THE BEDFORDSHIRE FA FOR THEIR LONGSTANDING COMMITMENT TO GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL.
Both were presented with commemorative shirts embroidered with “Outstanding services to grassroots football”, marking over 40 years of voluntary service to the club. Tracey and Heather carry out a wide range of essential duties across the club. Their work plays a key role in keeping the club running smoothly.

Our chairman, Guillem Balague, carries a Biggleswade United shirt with him on all of his travels as a football journalist and over 100 of the world’s top current and former players and managers have their photo taken with the shirt and subsequently displayed on the Hall of Fame. Top billing though are two of our shirts – one signed by the great Maradona and the other by the player who succeeded him – Lionel Messi.

We have a fully licensed bar and can accommodate up to 100 people inside the clubhouse. IS A GAME PLAYED AT WEEKENDS? WELL, NOT SO IF YOU ARE ONE OF THE HUNDREDS (MAYBE THOUSANDS) OF PEOPLE WHO GIVE UP THEIR TIME TO VOLUNTEER AT THEIR LOCAL NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB.
And at Biggleswade United, while we are proud of the teams that turn out for us on Saturdays and Sundays, we are especially proud of the team that is the heartbeat of the club and without whom we could not exist – our wonderful team of volunteers.
A volunteer’s contribution is not confined to the weekend but for some starts on a Monday morning and is constant throughout the week culminating on Saturday afternoon at 3pm when their work is done – but only for 90 minutes. At the final whistle, for our volunteers, the week starts over again.
And there’s no escaping the fact that these days social media is probably the single most important factor in helping to promote football clubs, especially those that operate at grassroots level. We have a social media team
As a club we are blessed with a band of volunteers that bring a multitude of skills to the club. The tasks are vast and vary from managing the car park on match days to overseeing the responsible management of the club through the club’s Board. We have hospitality and facilities teams who manage and maintain the bar, functions, clubhouse, changing rooms, pitch and the stadium. Our fundraising and merchandising team work tirelessly to raise the much needed funds to ensure the club is financially stable and able to support the playing and social aspects of the club.
based both locally and internationally that enables us to share updates about what is going on at the club, on and off the pitch, engage with the community, promote events, and even find sponsors and in the past has helped us bring in new personnel be they players or other people involved behind the scenes. We currently enjoy 32,800 followers on X (formerly Twitter), 22,800 on Instagram, 14,500 subscribers on YouTube and 6,200 on Facebook.
Working alongside our “operational volunteers” is another band of unpaid workers – our club’s football coaches who give up their valuable time – in all weathers - to ensure we are able to offer the best possible coaching experience for all players from under 7 boys and girls to adult male and female players.
Do we need more people? Of course we do. Our ship will always sail faster with more hands on deck and there are so many aspects to just even a matchday, that our current team can on occasions get overwhelmed.
