Bexleyheath is a warm and friendly golf club boasting a beautiful 9-hole parkland/heathland course and excellent practice facilities. Everyone is welcome at Bexleyheath, including non golfers. The membership is strong and is made up of several playing sections as well as social members who use the clubhouse as a local bar and restaurant, hugely contributing to a relaxed feel for all.

The club is of course more than just a golf course. At Bexleyheath we enjoy a full and varied social calendar, including monthly social nights showcasing some of the region’s best live bands as well as offering charity events throughout the year.

100 YEARS OF HISTORY

Recognised by the R&A in 1909, there is evidence that Golf has been played on this site since 1907. The land on which the course was built was originally fields and orchard land and the fairways were kept short by grazing sheep.

In 1921 the land was purchased by Bexleyheath Golf Club Limited, a company whose share holders were members of the club. The Limited Company was run by a board and the golf club leased the land to play golf on. The club is managed by a Committee.

The course is a Borough Grade 1 Site of Importance for Nature Conservation and contains the last remnants of the Heath which gave Bexleyheath its name.

The course has been rearranged on two occasions; firstly when the A2 trunk road was constructed and then again when it was widened to a dual carriageway in 1968. At that time, the access to Iris Avenue was created from Upton Road and this caused the 7th green to be relocated.

Since then, the course has remained essentially the same although the installation of fairway Watermation and improved green keeping techniques have seen playing conditions improve greatly.

Despite the many changes over the years, the essence of the club has remained and it is known as one of the friendliest clubs around.

Pro’s Tip Par 4 dogleg right

Stay left off the tee to have a better visual round the corner on the second shot. Aim the second shot past the corner of the valley before the green to have an easier approach to the green. For the longer hitters first shot to reach the corner (about 200 yards) to have a visual of the green, second shot aim to hit at the right side of the green.

Pro’s Tip Par 3 Downhill

Look to land the ball on the green, as it will have a better chance of staying on. In the summer it’s possible to land short and roll it on, but it will be harder to get the ball to stop on the green. if landing the ball short aim for the front left corner of the green.

Aim for the left side of the green, easier chip on if missing the green on the left side.

Pro’s Tip Par 4 uphill

Aim for the hump at the top of the hill, the slope will bring the ball back towards the middle of the fairway. For the longer hitters aim for the right side of the fairway as it will give a better angle into the green.

Pro’s Tip Par 4 downhill then uphill

First shot, hit a club that will get you to the bottom of the hill staying short of the hill before the green. On your second shot take an extra club to get to the top of the hill. the second shot will be a little easier if on your tee shot you don’t get too close to the hill.

Aim for the trees between the 6th and 8th holes, it’s a shared fairway so there is a lot of space. Second shot aim for the left side of the green and club up as it’s uphill.

Pro’s Tip Par 3 downhill

Aim for the centre part of the green, even when the flag is at the back of the green. It’s a very hard up and down if you go long. Beware of the right-to-left wind when it’s blowing, as you don’t feel it when on the Tee.

Try to reach the bottom of the hill with your first shot, the 6th Tee box is a good aiming spot. Right is the safe side. From there hit a shot that will get you to the top of the hill, that will leave around 100 yards to the green. The longer players can try and go for the green but be careful of the OB down the left side of the hole, the green is further to the right than the direction of the slope (ideally need to hit a fade).

Pro’s Tip

A well-placed tee shot over the slope onto a level fairway, approach shot to a green guarded by two green side bunkers.

Aim for the right to middle of the fairway, a gentle draw would be best, for the longer hitters. Anything not carrying the valley should aim for centre / left of the 3 trees.

CORPORATE & SOCIETY GOLF DAYS

Bexleyheath Golf Club welcomes corporate and society golf on weekdays only, and we would be delighted to tailor your golf day to suit your requirements.

The course provides a real challenge to all levels of golfer, and we take great pride in making your special day run as smoothly as possible.

All bookings have to be confirmed with the club office in writing at least two weeks before your visit. Along with confirmation of tee times and food requirements. We request a minimum society size of 12 people and we would require a deposit of £250.00.

If numbers are reduced within 4 days of your booking, your booking will be charged in full.

We offer nearest the pin and longest drive markers if required.

All visiting players are expected to observe the etiquette of golf at all times and to play without delay.

GREEN FEES

Golf Course is made up of 6 par 3s, 10 par 4s and 2 par 5 on the men’s card. With a yardage of just 5232 off the back tees and a par of 68 you may be forgiven for thinking a good score is just around the corner, however the yardage belies the difficulty of this gem of a 9 hole course. Always in superb condition and one which will offer an interesting challenge to both high and low handicappers alike.

We are a fairly relaxed club, but please read our requirements for dress and handicaps to ensure your visit runs as smoothly as possible

Bexleyheath Golf Club has somehow been squeezed into a small piece of land next to the A2 in South East London. Can such a compact nine-hole course be worth playing? I visited to find out.

Many readers will no doubt be familiar with the Sci-fi television drama, Dr Who. The Doctor uses a Tardis to leap to different periods in history and gets into all sorts of adventures. One of the characteristics of the Tardis is how it shapes time and space, the interior being huge compared to the exterior.

Bexleyheath Golf Club has something in common with Dr Who’s time vehicle. The course is located on a small area of land and is neatly arranged across the undulating parkland.

Like many people that live in this part of South East London and Kent, I have driven past Bexleyheath Golf Club on many occasions as I’ve made my way (usually to other golf courses) up and down the A2.

With the A2 so close by, Bexleyheath Golf Club is very easy to reach from Kent and Central London. A wonderful 9-hole

private golf course which, after my first visit, I wondered why on Earth I didn’t stop by sooner.

This particular part of London and North West Kent has many nine-hole courses tucked away between parks, housing estates and even schools.

Historically many of these courses were later converted to 18 holes and so the remaining short courses are distant echo of past golf course development in England.

INTRODUCTION - Extract from the London Golf Guide

Bexleyheath Golf Club is laid out across a hilly and undulating landscape. Narrow fairways in places, mature trees and numerous bunkers make Bexleyheath a superbly challenging course to play. This is a course that will test your game from tee to green.

The first tee is a great introduction to the course. With out of bounds all the way down the right, this tight dogleg par 4 is difficult to hit in regulation if you’re unfamiliar with the course. Your second shot is similarly

difficult, a narrow fairway leading to an elevated green that sets the tone for the rest of the course.

There’s plenty of opportunity to take the driver out of your bag but be warned, a slight miss hit or bad shot will see your ball only the wrong fairway behind a tree or at the foot of a severely steep hill.

There are some changes in elevation which the course’s design exploits to tremendous effect. The 7th green is one of those par 3’s that at only 100 or so yards,

looks easy to hit, unfortunately any change in wind may well see your ball embedding itself into one of the bunkers protecting its perimeter.

The distances on the scorecard at Bexleyheath Golf Club are generally a bit deceptive, the 8th par 4 has to be one of the trickiest I’ve played. The fairway is split by an incredibly steed hill, only a superbly executed high draw shot would set you up, a lay-up on at the base of the hill and a very good blind and equally high second shot might find the fairway.

The 18th is a lovely tee, located on top of the hill the relatively wide fairway, it’s an inviting shot and great way to finish your round. Whereas most 9-hole courses can become repetitive, there are some distinctly different tee locations and Bexleyheath adding an extra element of play.

On the day I was far too aggressive off the tee where I saw many of the members play a more conservative shot with a long iron, something I would probably do on a return visit.

It’s worth mentioning the condition of this course, the fairways were beautifully manicured and while the greens were still undergoing some hollow tinning work, they had a lovely shape about them making for some interesting reads.

Bexleyheath golf course oozes with character and there’s a real sense of community. Much of the course is surrounded by houses and the members were wonderfully welcoming and friendly.

Bexleyheath is a private course and so if you’re planning a visit a cursory call ahead to book a tee time would be advisable, though as visitors we were made to feel very welcome.

Bexleyheath Golf Club was a wonderful surprise. I have known about and driven past this course on numerous occasions, I never thought it would as beautiful and as much fun to play as it was. A friendly, fascinating course that is a true test of golfing skill.
