Moorings at Barry Yacht Club Barry Yacht Club is pleased to be able to offer mooring facilities, accommodating vessels of varying sizes from small boats to larger cruising vessels. Each year the dockmaster delegates the authority to allocate mooring berths in the western sector of the Pierhead Harbour to BYC members. Trot moorings extend along the western sea wall, starting directly in front of the clubhouse for small shallow draft boats and extending all the way out to close to the harbour entrance for larger craft. Closer in shore there is more space for club moorings, most of which dry to a soft mud but are still suitable for fin-kneel yachts. Further seaward lie some commercial moorings, now under the management of Barry Yacht Club.

The club currently has a number of drying moorings available, suitable for boats up to 10m. Most moorings within the harbour dry to soft mud with access from at least three hours before to three hours after high water. Arrangements can be made with the moorings officer, Ray, on 07780 762605 for boats to be left at Barry. Whilst there are no designated visitor moorings at present, many Club members will accommodate visitors mooring alongside. However, visitors must first seek permission and are not permitted to leave their boats unattended overnight.

On the 17th October 1928 a meeting was held at The Ship Hotel in Barry, following an advertisement in a local newspaper requesting the attendance of people interested in sailing and boating. Five people attended the meeting, as well as a reporter, and two weeks later a second meeting attracted an attendance of 15. With that, Barry Yacht and Motor Boat Club was formed. After compiling the club rules, one of the first actions undertaken was to prepare rules for a sailing dinghy class, which became known as the Barry 16ft Restricted Class. This class was based upon the type of boat used by Barry Dock boatmen to service vessels lying in the Bristol Channel off Barry; the boatman were also employed to assist vessels entering the port. History Five 16 footers raced at the inaugural Barry Regatta, which took place in the summer of 1929. The numbers taking part in these races increased in the following years and the it continued until the 1970s. In 1947, just two years after the Second World War, a 16 foot named Madcap was obtained as a club boat and many members learned to sail in the vessel. These types of boat were capable and responsive to sail and, indeed, to cruise over short distances. A model boat section was formed in 1929 and, a year later, lady members were accepted at an annual subscription of 2/6 (12 ½ p). In the following years a number of outboard motor boat racing events were held, and in 1930 the club approached the Admiralty and was successful in arranging for a flotilla of five destroyers to attend the regatta. Two years later the club managed to arrange for the large cruiser HMS York to attend the event and to enter the port where several visitors boarded. By 1931, the main priority of the club was to attend permanent premises. A building fund was started and the club was fortunate to obtain a lease on a site in the outer harbour of the dock, alongside the pre-existing Lifeboat House. History The building of the clubhouse was carried out mainly by members but, unfortunately, was marred by tragedy when one member – Fred Irish – fell to his death from the roof. It was also in that year that the name was shortened to Barry Yacht Club. By the mid 1930s Cadet Members were first admitted to the club and in 1936 the first Bristol Channel Race took place. This took the 14 competing vessels as far as Lundy Island, with several of the old sailing Pilot Cutters involved. In 2016, the club marked the 80th anniversary of this race. By 1938 the membership was in excess of 200 and there was a total of 78 vessels owned. During the war, the clubhouse was used by all three of the armed services at different times. The Royal Navy held conferences in the building to plan convoys leaving the Bristol Channel. A machine gun post was housed in the south west corner of the building commanding the western breakwater of the harbour.

History Shortly after the war the entrance fee was increased to £2 for men and 10 shillings 50p) for ladies. The National Albacore dinghy class was adopted in 1955 and built up to a maximum of 43 boats in the following decade, with several Welsh area championships held at the club. In 1968 the first BBC TV race was run for cruising boats, with the absence of an entry fee attracting 56 starters. Highlights were broadcast as a BBC news item the following day, with owners having the opportunity to see their boats sailing on television.

History The race continued up until quite recently under various sponsorships, including HTV and Brains Brewery. At its peak in the 1980s the race attracted as many as 130 entries and was probably the most well-attended cruiser event ever held in Wales. In 1978, the club’s 50th year, a passage race for sailing cruisers was staged to run from Barry to Cork in Southern Ireland. This race attracted 12 entries and, despite the inclement weather with force 7 southwest winds, seven boats reached the finish. From the early 80s the gradual decline of dinghy sailing and increase in cruiser ownership changed the character of the club, which at its peak had more than 100 dinghies and the same number of cruisers. Membership at one stage reached over 800, although this has since reduced. The club took the decision to increase the shore storage facilities, culminating in a major building development at the turn of the century. This increased the area of the fenced compounds and built the very large boat house known as the ‘Cathedral’.

History More recently, land previously occupied by a commercial boatyard has been leased and this includes a large storage shed. The club can now provide much greater facilities for winter lay-up or longer-term work, under cover if required. Up until the 1990s there was a strong cadet membership and the Club prided itself on the traditional family atmosphere that had always been enjoyed. Since 2000 the Club has embraced sea rowing and now has a total of four boats. This has been very good for the club, prompting an influx of younger members, some of whom have taken an interest in sailing and motorboating. The Club has also benefitted from the group membership of a Surf Lifesaving Club. There is a strengthening social membership which we hope will also result in more members taking an interest in nautical events, and our open day – held in the Spring – allows members of the public to get involved.

Activities Sea Rowing Sea rowing began at the club back in 2008 and the Sea Rowing Section was established with affiliation to the Welsh Sea Rowing Association (WRSA) five years later. There has been great enthusiasm over recent years for sea rowing, and the Club now possesses one Gig and three Celtic longboats. The latter are raced regularly around the south and west coasts of Wales during the summer season. Barry Yacht Club Sea Rowing Section strives to provide a fun and social way to enjoy our beautiful coastline. We provide the equipment and guidance needed to allow members not only to enjoy the sport safely, but also to thrive whilst doing so. Join us! It’s very rewarding rowing in some of the most beautiful locations in the UK. We are not a racing club although we do go racing and compete as hard as we can.
