Hannah Watkinson – Clinic Director

As the lead Podiatrist at the world-renowned Military Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court, Hannah gained extensive experience in the field of lower limb mechanical overuse injuries and trauma problems. She has helped military personnel return to optimum health, whether returning to the frontline or civilian life. For the past 11 years she has applied this experience for the benefit of her private patients, including professional athletes from Premiership football players to Olympic gold medallists.

Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands Golf Club is a member owned Club run for the enjoyment and benefit of its members. With members at the centre of everything we do, we operate with a limit on member numbers and also restrict the use of the course by visitors to ensure that Club members are able to make the most of their time at the club.

We recently introduced a new governance structure, including the formation of a Management Board in January 2025. The Board now leads the club’s strategic planning and business management,

allowing the Captain’s Committee to focus on what matters most to our members: the golf, the social calendar, and the overall member experience.

Member volunteers are the heartbeat of the club and members are encouraged to get involved as much as they want to and contribute to the continued vibrancy and success of the Club.

As an affiliated member of England Golf and Bedfordshire County Golf, we are proud holders of both the Safe Golf and Respect in Golf accreditations. Through

our support of the Bedfordshire Golf initiative, we have also appointed a Mental Health First Aider to further strengthen the well-being support available to our members.

We use a hybrid tee time system to fulfil the demand of both those who need the certainty of a pre-booked tee time but also provide the flexibility and spontaneity of the roll up golfer. This supports the strong rollup culture the club has developed over the years and allows this key aspect of our club to thrive.

Course

Our course began as a 9 hole course in 1914 and was extended to an 18 hole course 60 years later. Set in mature heathland/parkland our par 71 course offers a fair but challenging test to golfers of all abilities.

In 2024 we completed the installation of rope drainage in all 18 greens, improving surface drainage and enabling year-round play. We proudly boast some of the best putting surfaces in the County, protecting the course from the big hitters by being firm and fast!

The course has many challenges, despite its diminutive yardage of 6042 from the

back tees and is certainly no push over. Starting with a friendly par 4 with only the watching crowds from the clubhouse to pose any real threat to a strong opening for your round. The 5th hole is a stunning dog-leg right, playing down to the green – watch out for the water on the left on that inviting approach shot!.

The ninth brings you back to the clubhouse for a well earned stop at the Halfway House before tackling our signature hole, the 10th. A testing par 3 across a fern filled valley, the newly sculpted green surrounds on the right provide an area of safety but a testing second shot back up to the green.

The back nine holes, which were the original 9-holes have a different feel to the front and concludes with a picturesque finishing stretch to rival the best, as you make your way through holes 16 to 18 before returning to the clubhouse for that well earned drink.

Never one to let the grass grow under our feet, the course continues to evolve and mature with a structured programme of course improvements led by our Course Manager and his dedicated team.

Signature Hole

Hole 10

One of, if not the best, par 3s in the county. Aspley’s signature 10th hole, viewed from the clubhouse balcony it is spectacular. The green, when viewed from either tee, is deceptively long and narrow. Bunkers front and left catch more than their fair share of balls and newly contoured swales to the right of the green may provide a safe runoff but will leave a tricky return shot back up to the putting surface. Golfers walking off with a par feel like they’ve had a birdie! Beautiful, but lethal!

At Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands Golf Club, we pride ourselves on being a traditional private members club providing a warm and welcoming environment for the enjoyment of golf and the social activity that surrounds this great game.

Membership of the Club provides many opportunities for members to play in both competitive and social competitions throughout the year, with a full calendar of events available.

We utilise the Intelligent Golf (IG) system as a central hub for all member activity and information allowing members to keep up to date with goings on at the club,

as well as being able to book tee times, competitions and social events.

Associate Membership

We understand how disappointing it can be when full membership is at capacity. While waiting for a vacancy to become available, we offer Associate Membership, our active waiting list, and an excellent way to begin integrating into club life ahead of full membership.

Our membership renewal period takes place each April. As spaces are typically offered at this time, applications submitted after April often benefit from lower waiting list numbers and the greatest opportunity of being offered full membership for the upcoming season.

Into Golf at Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands Golf Club

We’ve designed our Journey Into Golf programme to make it easy and enjoyable for new golfers to get started, develop their skills, and become part of our friendly club community.

Stage 1 – Coaching Opportunities

Before stepping onto the course, we encourage all new golfers to take part in our club-organised coaching:

• 6 x One-to-One Lessons with a PGA Club Professional

• Group Coaching Programmes, such as our popular Ladies Academy

These sessions will equip you with the skills and confidence you need to advance to the next stage.

Stage 2 – New to Golf Package – £295

If you’re not quite “course ready” after completing stage 1, you can join our New to Golf package – valid for 12 months from your start date. Includes:

• Access to all practice facilities

• 10 x 9-hole course vouchers (play after 13:00)

• Extra 9 holes at member’s guest rate

• Option to exchange 9-hole vouchers for 30 minute indoor studio sessions

• 1 x One-to-One Lesson with a PGA Professional

• Social Membership privileges

Stage 3 – Get into Golf Membership –£765 (pro-rata for mid-year joiners)

Once you’re “course ready” and have completed Stages 1 & 2, you can apply for our Get into Golf (GiG) Membership.

Includes:

• Golf course access from 13:00

• Entry into selected competitions (including medals & stablefords –time restrictions apply)

• Fun competitions such as Aspley 9s

• 50% of your GiG Membership fee is deducted from your first full membership invoice when you progress

Note: Your place on the club’s full membership waiting list is secured from the date your GiG Membership begins. Until a space is available, you can continue your GiG membership, which is charged as a yearly subscription. If you decline, GiG will end on the following 31st March.

Visitors

We offer a warm welcome to golfing visitors and have seen our club’s popularity grow over the years with regular visitors returning on an annual basis. Visitors are able to book to play between Monday and Friday via the club website, up to 5 days in advance.

The club hosts golf days, for golf societies, corporate groups and charities on Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the year with our golf day offering providing exceptional value for money and a great golfing experience.

Our annual calendar of Open events provides something for everyone and continue to be popular as ever.

Men’s Senior Golf - The Willmotts

Our Men’s Seniors Section is known as “The Willmotts” in honour of Charles Willmott who helped construct the course and served as the Club Professional from 1914 to 1956.

Involvement in the Willmotts is open to all male members aged 55 and over and a full calendar of golfing activities is organised each year to include;

• Monthly Medals and Stablefords

• Regular Trophy Competition throughout the main playing season

• 28 matches (either home or away) against neighbouring clubs

• Internal matches are played annually against the men’s Club Team and both with and against the Ladies

• Summer and Winter knockout Competitions

The Willmotts also organise a mini break and Captains away day each year which is well supported.

Men’s Golf

Men’s golf at the club is both competitive and inclusive, offering a full calendar of competitions throughout the season for players of all abilities.

Monthly Medal and Stableford competitions, played across three divisions, form the backbone of the competition programme. Alongside these, a wide range of prestigious Honours Board trophies are contested each year, featuring individual and pairs formats in both stroke play and matchplay knockout competitions.

For those who enjoy representing the club, there are multiple team opportunities available:

Junior Golf

Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands Golf Club has a very active junior section which continues to grow and thrive, with over 80 junior members the club provides the perfect environment for juniors to “Get into Golf” and develop their game.

Our Juniors enjoy their own Monthly Medal/Stableford competitions and Summer and Winter knockout competitions.

Our Juniors are also encouraged to enter many of the adult competitions once they have appropriate handicaps.

We welcome all standards of player and help develop them as we believe them to be the future of the club. The Juniors also have access to excellent coaching support through our Club professional who will help with this development.

Our Club professional can provide personal coaching in his Performance Studio using the latest video equipment.

Ladies’ Section

The Ladies’ Section is a thriving, supportive and friendly group which, as well as loving its golf, involves itself in every aspect of Club life.

Our buddy system has been introduced to help and support new lady members settle into club life. Our New Member and the Aspley Ladies WhatsApp groups can be joined to ask golf related questions, find playing partners and celebrating golfing successes.

Social roll-ups take place on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. Ladies’ competitions are played throughout the year including every Tuesday and on weekend dates. These are a mixture of

singles, team and fun events and include fixtures with, and against, the Willmotts (Seniors).

Our competitive golfing calendar includes monthly Medal and Stableford competitions and honours board events for both pairs and singles and provides options for both midweek and weekend play.

Organisation of a Ladies’ Open, Invitation Day, Exchange Day and a Ladies’ Weekend Away are some examples of a very full golfing year.

County and Regional Club Events

There is close involvement with Bedfordshire County Golf, with respect to representation

on its committee and good participation in County competitions and events.

A.G. & W.S. ladies take part in both the County Shield and Scratch Leagues, playing against other Bedfordshire clubs. In 2024 we won the Scratch League, unbeaten in all our matches and the Shield Team has enjoyed considerable success in recent seasons, winning the league on multiple occasions. Our ladies have been selected for both the County 1st and 2nd squads. At International level we are proud to have one of our ladies selected for the Welsh Senior squad for the last two years. From April to October, there are friendly matches for ladies during the week and for business ladies at a weekend, in addition to mixed pairs matches on Sundays.

Richard Lally, Head Professional has a very good reputation in the local area for coaching all aspects of the game and has helped all standards of golfers, from beginners to Professionals.

MATTHIEU TAYLOR PGA ASSISTANT PROFESSIONAL

My approach to coaching is shaped as much by life outside golf as it is by time spent on the course. Before coaching full-time, I spent my younger years as a drummer in the band The Smoking Hearts, touring, performing, and learning first-hand what it takes to practice with purpose and perform under pressure.

That background heavily influences how I coach today. Rhythm, timing, feel and repetition are central to both music and golf, and I focus on helping players develop movement and decisions that hold up when it matters.

I coach golfers who want clarity and simplicity rather than technical overload. Every player is different, so sessions are tailored, practical and built around skills that transfer to the course. The aim is to create confident, self-sufficient golfers who understand their game and enjoy playing it more.

TURNEY PGA ASSISTANT PROFESSIONAL

I am a 19-year-old dedicated and driven PGA Assistant Professional at Aspley Guise Golf Club.

Having taken up golf just over three years ago, I provide a fresh, enthusiastic, and vibrant perspective, combined with a determined work ethic to excel as a coach. This unique trajectory to professional status demonstrates success is possible for aspiring golfers.

My coaching is underpinned by clear communication, patience, and understanding that each player learns differently. Whether working with beginners or more experienced juniors, I focus on keeping the experience safe, engaging, and fun whether it be in a 1-to-1 or a group session.

Pros’ Tips - Hole by Hole

Hole 1

A short but narrow opening hole, keep your tee shot up the right-hand side of the fairway.

Hole 2

A blind tee shot requires you to aim at the marker post and keep your approach shots to the green up the right-hand side. A deceptively sloping green.

Hole 3

You must be very accurate with your approach shot to the small, well-guarded green.

Hole 4

A smooth swing to produce an accurate tee shot is required. Miss the green and you’re in trouble!

This beautifully sculptured hole favours a drive down the left-hand side to get a good look at the pin.

Hole 6

Don’t let the water put you off! Long hitters should be aware of the ditch crossing in front of the approach and make sure to avoid the out of bounds on the left of the hole. Over hitting your approach shot to the green will see you with nowhere to go.

Hole 7

One of the toughest par 3’s around. A well struck long iron or wood is required to reach the green but avoid the water to the right.

Hole 8

A very testing par 5. Be patient and take an extra club up to the elevated, two tier green.

Hole 9

With out of bounds down the left and a sloping fairway, two very accurate long shots are required to reach the green. You’re playing well if you make par here!

Hole 10

Signature Hole: A much talked about hole in the area. This deceptively deep green means precise clubbing is essential. Hidden contours require you to favour your tee shot to the left-hand side of the green.

Hole 11

A gentle sloping fairway requires a tee shot up the right-hand side. You need to be very accurate into this long and thin green.

Hole 12

Another accurate tee shot is needed, leaving you an approach shot that must be struck well to carry the road.

Hole 13

Precision with a short club is vital. This is another very deceptively tricky green to putt on.

Hole 14

A picturesque par 5. Play a fade off the tee and you’ll be in position ‘A’. Lay up short of the bunkers leaves an extremely testing short approach shot into the narrow green.

Hole 15

Take enough club to carry the water but avoid the out of bounds to the right.

Hole 16

Accuracy off the tee and good club selection is the answer to this great par 4. It is very easy to under club on your approach shot.

Hole 17

Another testing tee shot. The gentle sloping fairway favours a drive up the right-hand side. This green is a narrow target, which basically means precision is a must.

Hole 18

A draw is the best shape to play off the tee. Big Hitters can reach the green in 2. The safe play is to lay up leaving you a wedge into the green.
