Begins With the Doctors As the economic panorama worsens, Belizeans are aware that the fallout due to COVID-19 is just beginning to be felt. What began as furloughs are now becoming permanent layoffs of very significant numbers of employees. Some companies are trying to remain viable by cutting salaries and implementing strict cost cutting and austerity measures. These provisions are being employed in the hopes that it will allow the companies to ride out this financial catastrophe that has seen demand affected and supply lines severely disrupted, and bounce back once the economy stabilizes. Forecasts predict that the Tourism Industry our main economic driver will not begin to recover until 2021. There have been layoffs in at least one of the two major national airlines, and it seems the other may follow soon. There are reports that salary cuts of as much as twenty-five percent will be announced at the Digicell the nationalized telecommunication
