Everything is Forum

First place in the New Esplanade Competition at University of Bío-Bío Competition

Everything is Forum

In order to define the Democracy Esplanade as the new center of the University Campus, we propose a permeable perimeter in which Everything is Forum. An edge that recognizes the urban void and gives it value as a place of stay and appropriation for all the public of Concepción.

. Inner World

A forum that, aware of the flows of the existing corridors, proposes an Inner World that accompanies the possible routes and seeks a constant discovery for the passerby. A project that, to the outside, is presented in a regular way following the canons of the adjacent buildings, but that inwardly turns like a geometry that seeks to follow the course of the forest and its gardens.

Only Earth

This ribbon that ties everything together is projected with Solo Tierra. A single element that repeats and adapts, but always follows the same constructive strategy. Aware of the agricultural past of the place, we propose a street furniture built with rammed earth, where Container and Content are built with the same material. The idea of a sustainable and friendly spirit with the urban soil proposes the use of innovative and low impact materials, reducing gas emissions in its construction.

RAPA NUI MUSEUM

Rapa Nui - Chile, 2024 Entry Competition

The existing landscape of the Vaitea Fundo is recognized, articulating it formally and spatially with the routes, paths, accesses and moments of the Masterplan and the New Rapa Nui Museum.

Cosmovision of the Territory.

The Masterplan and Museum seek to recognize, value and integrate the importance of the landscape for the Rapa Nui culture in a space destined to culture and extension. As a first approach, the extension towards the horizon is observed and the importance of the Poike Volcano and the Maunga Pu’i Mount is identified as points to observe and to be integrated in the project.

“Observatory“ space: Constant visual relationship with the context

Both the masterplan proposal and the museum assume the condition of ”observatory” of the territory, where the inhabitants of Rapa Nui and visitors will be able to access the existing and proposed vegetation, which together with the complementary buildings, will reorder the new public space.

By proposing buildings that barely rest on the ground and with an open and passable second floor, the new circuits would protect the presence of the landscape and would directly connect the outdoor programs such as the ceremonial esplanade, botanical garden, existing ruins and the educational garden.

Urban character and historical presence

The Caja Los Andes building is situated in a neuralgic point of downtown Concepción. Located at the intersection of the only diagonal of the urban fabric that connects the Barrio Universitario with the Plaza de Tribunales.

This iconic building is a landmark for the city since its foundation and has undergone intense modifications over the years, changing the original project until reaching its current state. Since 2018 the building is unoccupied and abandoned after suffering a fire in the context of the social outburst.

Recovery of the preexistence

It is proposed to strip the building of its current facade and leave it in its original state maintaining the concrete structure and its facades. The old program is recovered and reinforced.

Revaluation Placa Torre

The heritage of the modern era in Concepción is distinguished in its architecture by the Placa-Torre typology, which had the intention of bringing commercial and social exchange to an elevated level separated from the street.

ALERO TECNOLOGICO

Technological Eave

Araucania - Chile, 2025

Second place in the National Competition for the New Construction Innovation Center for CTEC in the Araucania Region.

The Technological Eave is proposed as a great Ecological Mantle that from its geometry and architecture, is born from the earth and becomes part of the landscape. As a great energy collector and propellant, the project and its roof create a Corporate Image that seeks to be a reference in Net Zero and passive design constructions. Under the eave, which is constituted as an open catalog of prefabricated and industrialized pieces, the Multipurpose Collaborative Space, the Service Room and the Intermediate Space are constantly linked to the Park, which is also strategically designed in a sustainable manner.

Geometry of the place.

The proposal seeks to integrate itself in the square of the sculptures as an element that recognizes the geometry and flows of the place. For this reason, the diagonal tension, the existing corridor and the presence of the large trees, condition the volume of the project and its corner position within the Campus. By mediating with so many factors, a translucent skin envelops and defines different degrees of transparency and openness with the context. Delivering constant variations in its perception of the building and offering itself as a platform of permanent change and exposure for the Student Community.

Flexibility and appropriation of spaces.

As in a house, the project explores the flexibility of the spaces, so that the students themselves are the ones who take over and define the different uses over time. And with the intention of enhancing a sense of belonging and identity, the enclosures are terraced towards the square to display the programs through its façade.

Use of wood.

As a sustainable material and characteristic of the University, the assembly and construction is mainly in prefabricated pieces of laminated wood. The diagonalization of wood pillars in the perimeter of the project would define and characterize the structure that envelops the total of the floors. On the other hand, the triangulation and assembly of the pieces, frames and proposes a way of relating the users with the exterior.

Single-family house - In the Stream of Thresholds

Tipology

Familiar House

Team

The new single-family home is situated at the rear of a private plot on a gently sloping site, carefully nestled into the terrain. In the subsoil, a retaining wall running the length of the house supports the Rhine’s own loose gravel and ballast.

The center of the house is a continuous living space at ground level, glazed on both the front and back, opening onto the garden and framed by living areas on the sides. This spatial continuum connects the interior and exterior spaces, facilitating a fluid interaction between the two. Sliding and folding doors on the sides allow the living area to be connected or separated from adjacent rooms as needed.

The central space is the result of a process of spatial disentanglement, achieved by separating the main load-bearing walls, within which the enclosed rooms are formed.

The main living room, the most conceptually rich, is structurally conceived as an “empty” room, creating an atmosphere of simultaneous tension and calm.

The strategy of densifying the existing building fabric creates new collective space and centrality. The level of interaction grows with the increase in activities and spatial density. By bundling and strengthening the existing node field, a dissolution and lack of reference is counteracted. The new structure is intended to create proximity to the existing school buildings and outdoor facilities and use the familiar access routes. The extension encloses the large central sports field of the school complex, similar to an urban square, and thus defines a place of high social density. At the same time, the new building complements this square with a spacious covered outdoor area.

TORRE PIAZZA ARGENTINA

Milano - Italy, 2023 / Prof. Quintus Miller

Diploma Master Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio

Location

Milano, Italy

Dates

The Piazza Argentina is recognised as an urban void to be reinforced and enhanced, so the building offers an extension of the square in the form of a Milanese courtyard, generating a new public space on Corso Buenos Aires.

The geometries of the site gave shape and support to the project, proposing a tower that faces Diagonal Severio Mercadante, suspended with a cantilever that allows the view to escape and the diagonal to continue. The project also distances itself from the existing building, giving it a value in the form of a “ready-made”, complementing it on Via Nicolo Paganini with a volume that closes the multifunctional complex. The tower, as an abstraction of the four Milanese partitions and intended as a reference for the city, is proposed as a unified language through a skin; composed of two layers, the first a visible structure that is also a façade and the second, windows that envelop the building and are broken in the centre, as a way of subtly changing everyday life.

LA NEGRA HOUSE

Arauco - Chile, 2018

From 2018 to 2020 different projects emerged, some built and others currently under construction.

The work presented, corresponds to a series of own designs in conjunction with Fabiola Pineda, as co-workers.

La Negra perches like an object that arrives to mark an approach between an unexplored hill and a solitary beach. Its impartial character scales the beginning and end of both parts.

The program rises to a second level, establishing a longitudinal volume with respect to the horizon, where the natural environment underlies the custody of the inhabitant.

Whoever resides captures the different moments of the sea through routes that induce the negation and appearance of the landscape. In this way, the inhabitant is persuaded by the light that frames the times of each space.

COWORKING

Concepción- Chile, 2020-21

We were commissioned to design the interior of a co-working office in an existing building. The project tries to respond to a fixed and flexible office program, always thinking as a Work station and Audiovisual room at the same time. The complexity of the design was working with a prexistent building.

Pisco you can do it everywhere, but how to made the illusion that the production and the building is really part of the place? The illusion that the building is being born from the mountain? Thats why the proyect propose to be part of the landscape, following the curves of the land and topography.

On the other hand, the programm is divided into two levels, the ground floor where all the production takes place and the first floor where with volumes that direct the view to different parts as binoculars that are supported by large beams that tie the whole project together.

OPEN ARCHITECTURE

Lugano - Switzerland, 2021 / Prof. Aires Mateus

First year of Master Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio

Cities are generally understood as a mass, a hard space or a succession of buildings. On the other hand, within this overwhelming city life there are also parks, rivers or lakes. Voids that are necessary but are often overshadowed by the urban grid. So, how can Open Architecture sometimes disconnect us from the city, attract us and lead us to these empty spaces that we really need? In which part of a city can we guarantee spaces without a programme, which promote freedom of action?

CONCEPCION TRAIN STATION AND CIVIC CENTER

Concepción-Chile, 2019

Project Diploma Universidad del Bío-Bío

During 2018, a call was made for an international competition to develop the design of the Civic Esplanade of Concepción in conjunction with its Train Station, of which the project “Claros urbanos”, would receive the top prize. From this winning idea, this project will rescue its intention to make the land between Barros Arana and O’higgins Street a park, understanding that Barros Arana will be the main pedestrian access to the North Bank and that O’higgins will provide access mainly for transportation.

It is in this distance between streets that the project seeks to constitute an access threshold to the Civic Esplanade of Concepción, where the Train Station will be understood as an articulating landmark in the city’s desire to reach the river. The construction of this threshold is intended to be added to those that will be understood as pre-existing thresholds within the city, either the University of Concepción, the Plaza de Tribunales, Plaza de la Independencia, Plaza España and the Costanera.

The project as a whole works the idea of park in this transfer between the city and the Esplanade. More fortuitous circulations are configured in front of the Bicentennial Plaza and with volumes that programmatically complement the Bicentennial Park culturally and recreationally. While the station itself, is developed with three towers that respond respectively to a train line and seek to leave in constant evidence its origin from the subway in conjunction with the trees that also arises from the -1 floor. This language will be repeated throughout the complex.

PAVIMENTO (IN)VISIBLE

Logroño - Spain, 2021

International Competition Festival of Architecture and Design

Competition Entry

The project recognizes the existing geometry of the square by framing the pavilion exactly within the limits drawn by the street pavement. From this perimeter, the square is recognized as the pavilion itself and a wooden ring is erected with different heights and situations. A temporary garden is placed inside the ring, an unusual situation that encourages us to experience the square in a new way for a few days.

This nostalgia for social interaction outside is transformed into a recognition of the street as the public space par excellence.

Artifact is also defined as “a factor that disturbs the correct interpretation of the result, in a study or an experiment “1. Or seen in another way; an agent that removes a reading or understanding already recognized as immovable. The project comes then, to shake the meaning of frontier and to deepen this truth defined by Nicanor Parra in which “we believe we are a country”, but in which “we are just a landscape “.

In the scale of the landscape, the borders between countries do not exist and the thawing of the Andes Mountains transforms the water into an eternal seam between Chile and Argentina. That is why the proposal does not define a place, but seeks to internalize a situation that has always been there. An artifact that recognizes the already existing footprint of the water, and with its design and shape, naturally follows the course of its currents.

BACKBONE

Pavia - Italy, 2021-2022

International Competition

Besides renovating the Idroscalo itself, our project wants to consolidate the building as the main point of a new urban circuit.

Pavia’s historical centre limits with the Ticino river. Across the two kilometers of city that go from the Ponte della Libertà to the Viale Resistenza there are only two bridges that cross the river: the aforementioned Ponte della Libertà and the Ponte Coperto. From a connectivity point of view, this is a flaw in that side of the city.

Our project wants to deal with this issue. It is necessary to strengthen the linkage between the two banks of the river and for that we propose the construction of a footbridge that crosses from the Idroscalo area.
