Dear Lakehawk Graduates and Families,
On behalf of the District Board of Trustees, faculty, and staff of Lake-Sumter State College, congratulations on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Today is the culmination of your dedication, resilience, and hard work; this is also a day to celebrate all that you have accomplished.
Lake-Sumter State College is committed to expanding access to higher education and to preparing students for meaningful careers that strengthen our regional workforce. Your success demonstrates the transformative power of education and its impact on families, employers, and communities. You represent the promise of our community, united in your drive to learn, grow, and succeed; you embody the hope for a brighter future.
For many of you, beginning this journey required courage and sacrifice. You balanced jobs, family responsibilities, and life’s challenges while staying focused on your goals. With the support of your family, friends, instructors, and advisors, you persisted and proved that determination can open doors to new opportunities and career pathways. Take a moment to thank those who encouraged you and believed in your potential.

DISTRICT BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Each of the 28 colleges in the Florida College System is operated under the local control of a District Board of Trustees composed of citizens who volunteer their time and are legally vested with decision-making authority in all matters of college policy, programs, facilities, budgets, and personnel. The Governor appoints each member to the board. Seven citizens from Lake County and Sumter County serve four year terms. This group of dedicated individuals meets regularly to guide the development of Lake-Sumter State College and ensure that it continues to fulfill its mission.

Transforming Lives and Futures
across Lake & Sumter Counties
Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) is a story of vision, growth, and transformation. It began in 1961, when the citizens of Lake and Sumter counties rallied to establish an institution of higher learning for their communities. The first students started classes in modular buildings at Leesburg High School.
After merging with Johnson Junior College, Lake-Sumter found a home near Silver Lake in Leesburg and the campus opened in 1965. In 1970, the College changed its name to Lake-Sumter Community College (LSCC), reflecting its role in the State of Florida’s newly created Division of Community Colleges.
Lake-Sumter continued to expand facilities and programs over the next two decades. In 1995, the Sumter Center was opened with a dedication ceremony led by Governor Lawton Chiles. And in 1999, the South Lake Campus opened in Clermont, featuring a joint-use facility between Lake-Sumter and the University of Central Florida.
In 2012, the college was renamed to Lake-Sumter State College with the addition of baccalaureate degree programs.
The College has continued to see tremendous population growth in its service area necessitating the expansion of academic programs, infrastructure investments, and student enrollment. Collaborative industry partnerships have been a crucial component of the College’s capacity to expand to meet the
needs of students and local employers. These strategic alliances have enriched student opportunities in a wide array of career pathways.
The rapid growth in the Orlando metropolitan area, particularly in the service area of Lake and Sumter Counties, is driving growth, innovation, and workforce demand in an array of industries offering high-skill, high-wage positions. Students have opportunities to pursue associate degrees, baccalaureate degrees, and certificates in over thirty areas of study that meet their career goals and align with employer demand.
In 2025, Lake-Sumter achieved a significant milestone in its history by serving over 10,000 students in one academic year for the first time. As the College continues to grow, Lake-Sumter remains committed to embracing its rich history of high-quality education and personalized student support services.
By rapidly adapting and responding to this demand in the region, Lake-Sumter State College will continue to be the premier workforce engine driving training and education opportunities in these counties.
Together, we can create a significant impact to meet the needs of today’s students and prepare for future generations.

Chief Executive Officer, AdventHealth Minneola Clermont Ceremony Commencement Speaker
BLAISE INGOGLIA
Kay Barnett is the chief executive officer of AdventHealth Minneola, where she leads the organization’s strategic vision, growth, and operations. Since joining AdventHealth in 2011, she has held key roles in strategy, business development, and internal communications, contributing to asset planning, service line development, physician engagement, and regional partnerships across Central Florida.
She most recently led the opening of Lake County’s newest state-ofthe-art, 80-bed hospital, expanding access to whole-person care for
Florida’s Chief Financial Officer and State Fire Marshal Leesburg Ceremony Commencement Speaker
Blaise Ingoglia serves as Florida’s Chief Financial Officer and State Fire Marshal, overseeing billions in taxpayer assets and leading the Florida Department of Financial Services. He manages the state’s finances, promotes transparency, combats fraud, and supports first responders, with a focus on making Florida more affordable by lowering property taxes and reducing insurance costs.
Before public office, Blaise built a successful career as a mortgage broker and founder of a homebuilding company, and gained recognition for advocating government accountability through
the growing South Lake community and supporting a team of nearly 500 caregivers. Her work reflects a strong commitment to increasing access to high-quality healthcare.
A Nebraska native, Kay holds a Bachelor of Science in business administration with a focus in marketing and a minor in communications from Union Adventist University. She is passionate about leveraging her background to support caregivers and strengthen community health. Kay serves on the boards of Whole Life Church and the Lake Economic Area Development Partnership. She and her husband, Ryan, have two sons.

As CFO, he continues to champion responsible budgeting, financial literacy, and efficient government, while overseeing unclaimed property efforts and investigations into fraud and abuse. Known for his direct, no-nonsense approach, Blaise remains committed to protecting taxpayers. He lives in Spring Hill with his wife, Julie, and their family.

Kevin Crossan lives in Grand Island but is originally from Long Island, New York. He is completing his studies at Lake-Sumter State College by earning a baccalaureate degree, fulfilling a dream he’s held for over thirty years.
Kevin’s career goal is to teach social studies to high school students, a path inspired by his desire to educate and encourage

Kollin Casey is from Mount Dora and will be graduating with his Associate in Science in Nursing. He began his education at Lake-Sumter as a dual enrollment student. He was valedictorian of his high school class and member of the National Honor Society. Kollin has pursued nursing with the goal of caring for others and making a meaningful difference in people’s lives, while also striving to be a godly husband

Alexandra Rodriguez, of Groveland, is graduating with her Associate in Arts and plans to pursue a career in nursing.
Inspired by caring for her grandfather after surgery, she chose nursing because she saw how compassion and skill can change lives. Alexandra has served as president of the Latino Culture Club, secretary of Phi Theta Kappa, and earned Student Excellence Awards and Dean’s List

Outside the classroom, he enjoys reading, listening to music and audiobooks, spending time with his wife, their dog, Sadie, and friends. He is also active in the Lector Ministry at St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church.

CAPS AND GOWNS, AN EXPLANATION
Academic Regalia
The tradition of the academic dress dates back nearly eight centuries. Scholars, both teachers and students, wore long gowns to keep warm in the damp and drafty halls of learning. Gradually, styles were adopted which were characteristic of the individual college and of the highest academic degree held by the wearer. In 1895, a commission was established to come up with a uniform code for academic costume. Today the gowns, hoods, tassels and mortarboards worn by the graduating students of most institutions, follow this code.
At Lake-Sumter State College, certificate and associate degree candidates wear black regalia and baccalaureate degree candidates wear green regalia. Candidates wear a matching square “mortarboard” cap that is traditional for all degrees – a tradition started at Oxford University.
LSSC faculty and staff wear caps, gowns, and hoods representing the institution and academic discipline of their highest earned degree.
The tassel is worn on the right side of the cap until the degree is conferred and moved to the left side as part of the Commencement ceremony.
Processional
The processional is a symbolic representation of the academic community coming together to celebrate a significant event, such as an inauguration, graduation, or a formal convocation ceremony. It represents the collective strength and unity of the college community, as well as its commitment to advancing knowledge and promoting learning.
College Mace
The college mace is a ceremonial staff that the faculty marshal carries during formal academic ceremonies. It symbolizes the institution’s authority and its commitment to upholding academic excellence and fulfillment of its mission At our institution, the mace features the seals of Lake-Sumter State College and the State of Florida, representing the college’s commitment to local and statewide academic pursuits.
The Presidential Medallion
The college president's gold medallion, worn at formal and ceremonial events, designates the president as a distinguished scholar and administrator—the highest official dedicated to upholding the College's mission.

Faculty Marshal
Serving as the faculty marshal at Lake-Sumter State College holds a special significance, marking years of services to the institution. The longest serving faculty member serves in this role and represents a legacy of commitment and service. The current faculty marshal is Nora Rackley, a Librarian who has served the College since 1995.
In ceremonial events like commencements and convocations, Nora leads the procession, carrying the college mace. Beyond its symbolic weight, this duty embodies the institution's pursuit of excellence and the faculty's collective dedication.

As the faculty marshal, Nora sets the tone for these significant occasions, symbolizing the values and ethos of the college. It's a role that reflects the institution's deep-rooted traditions and emphasizes the importance of academic decorum and pride in its achievements.
Adornments to Academic Regalia
Cords, stoles, medallions, and tassels representing various academic achievements or other honors are also worn at the discretion a degree-granting institutions. At LSSC, cords and stoles identify the academic discipline of baccalaureate candidates and recognize achievements such as graduation honors, membership in honorary societies or select groups, service in the U.S. Armed Forces, and other student leadership positions.
These adornments to the regalia must be reviewed and approved by the College’s Convocation Committee for inclusion in the academic regalia. Only approved adornments are allowed at Commencement ceremonies.
