Neuropsychiatry

Success Story: Laura Laura is a 55-year-old who was admitted to St Peter’s hospital in 2022 due to a diagnosis of Huntington’s disease associated with psychosis and depression. Laura used to be a book keeper and is an avid lover of outdoor activities. Laura’s first contact with mental health services was in 2018 when she called the police claiming her mother and brother had been violent towards her. She became aggressive towards the police and was subsequently assessed under the Mental Health Act. At the time she was not detained, and she received support in the community from the Intensive Support Team.

However, her mental state continued to deteriorate. Laura’s paranoid thoughts and challenging behaviours led her to live outside with her dog as she believed she was being poisoned in her flat. In 2019 she was detained under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act and was admitted to hospital. Her detention was further extended under Section 3 Mental health Act.
