projects. This work includes numerous renovations, service as associate architect for the Ashley River Tower Replacement Hospital, and conceptual planning studies supporting both completed and forthcoming initiatives. Our partnership has continued to grow through transformative projects such as the College of Dental Medicine, The Darby Research Institute, the R. Keith Summey Medical Pavilion, and the new Indian Land Hospital—each one advancing MUSC’s mission and extending its impact into rapidly growing communities.

INSTITUTE OF PSYCHIATRY, SUBSTANCE ABUSE ADDITION

1993

The Institute of Psychiatry at Medical University of South Carolina created a dual-purpose facility which provides excellence in behavioral healthcare to SC residents and serves as educational and research space for MUSC’s students and faculty.

ASHLEY RIVER TOWER REPLACEMENT HOSPITAL

The Ashley River Tower marked a new chapter in MUSC’s growth. The patient-centered design yielded immediate results in terms of patient satisfaction, efficiency, and flexibility, and provided expanded space for heart and digestive disease programs, procedures, and patient beds.

LS3P was the Architect of Record in association with NBBJ as Lead Design Architect.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

Within a year of opening, the Ashley River Tower scored in the 88th percentile of Press Ganey’s patient satisfaction survey — a 14% increase from MUSC’s previous scores — and the average length of patient stays dropped from 5.32 to 5.16 days.

ā€œFaced with so many tough requirements, MUSC had given serious thought to locating the new hospital off campus. But MUSC ultimately decided it was committed to the local community and to its campus, which opened in 1955.ā€

COLLEGE OF DENTAL MEDICINE

ā€œEveryone, from our patients, students, faculty, facilities staff and our Administration Staff love the look and function of the Building. It is a perfect blend of light, airy and attractive and extraordinarily efficient in function, as well. We are currently working with LS3P again on an elevated pedestrian bridge linking our faculty offices and classroom with the new Clinical Building and once again LS3P has impressed us with their ability to listen and to respond with a practical, yet extraordinarily beautiful design result!ā€

ā€œWe are bringing the very best of what we do to Summerville. We will extend our compassionate and respectful care through a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach. We are also going to do something extremely innovative which will result in high tech care with a hometown touch.ā€

COMMUNITY IMPACT

We envision more than a hospital. It will be a neighborhood gathering place, one that supports a thriving community

Accessible and convenient, a part of your community.

INDIAN LAND MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING

LS3P designed the Indian Land campus, with a OneMUSC mindset, that consists initially of a 51 bed hospital and a 3 story medical office building as well as the initial site development of roughly 20 acres of land. The project includes a compressed project schedule which accommodated simultaneous programming, room standard planning, and preliminary planning/budget validation steps along with a OneMUSC approach to design with a similar project at Nexton Community Hospital.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

The project is operating under a compressed schedule, which has required simultaneous efforts in programming, room standard planning, and preliminary planning/budget validation. This approach aligns with the OneMUSC design philosophy, drawing parallels to the concurrent development of the Nexton Community Hospital.

INDIAN LAND HOSPITAL

LS3P has been an excellent partner in developing our Indian Land Medical Center campus. As a greenfield site in a high growth area, it has been critical to design now with the future in mind. The team at LS3P helped guide that thought process while maintaining focus on delivering a well-functioning product day one. The team was particularly effective in helping achieve design standards desired by our larger enterprise within budget. They use tools effectively like stacking and BIM to help non-architects visualize how design would translate to the field and function for end users. Further, their team has considerable depth and experience, which proved valuable in patiently guiding operators to endpoints that both satisfied their needs and budgetary requirements. I am very pleased with the design product that is being implemented in the field and will continue to call upon LS3P as a trusted partner for future projects across a wide range of scopes and types.

We understand that the needs of your patients and communities are paramount in achieving your vision of ā€œLeading health innovation for the lives we touch.ā€ LS3P’s vision approaches the task of strengthening our communities through the lens of design, and we believe that it is our privilege and our responsibility to deploy our design skills in service to the greater good: ā€œIn our commitment to the Southeast, we create architecture that enriches community through a culture of design excellence, expertise, innovation, and collaborative engagement.ā€
