continuous evolution
2021 was a long year. A pandemic peak, a national crisis, an inauguration. Massive vaccine campaigns, renewed optimism, an early summer teaser of a return to normalcy, and the Delta variant. Simultaneous climate events, in-person weddings and reunions, supply chain roller coasters. A ship stuck in the Suez Canal. Overdue vacations, thoroughly enjoyed. A rover and a helicopter drone on Mars. Omicron. We returned to some things cautiously; other things are still on hold. The Olympics happened a year late. Adele released a new album. The U.S. left Afghanistan. Captain Kirk went to space. Through this roller coaster of a year, the seasons changed, and the earth turned. We learned to live with uncertainty, but we didn’t love it. We practiced resilience, leaned in on optimism, enjoyed real successes, and above all, were grateful for the people who keep us balanced and joyful along the way.

Through this roller coaster of a year, we found ways to stay close. Some teams found that scheduling overlapping office days for collaboration worked great. Other teams thrived on Teams, and supported each other across our multi-city network with information, with shared workloads, and with GIFs. People began to move around a bit more, popping into other offices to reconnect and share ideas. Whether face-to-face or in the virtual world or bouncing between the two, we found ways to enjoy our colleagues and our work with our Vision always at the forefront.

When we pivoted to remote work in response to the COVID-19 crisis in March of 2020, we were proud that our technology capabilities and our stellar Technology Team made this rapid transition possible. While we were relieved to find that this option worked well in 2020 in response to an emergency, we have been delighted to find that remote work has allowed us to collaborate across geographies in unforeseen ways in 2021. Now more than ever, we are forming cross-office teams based on expertise rather than geography. We are more strategic about when face-to-face meetings are important, and reducing the time, expense, and environmental impacts spent on traveling when a virtual meeting is more efficient for all. We have created options for better flexibility and balance for our team members, and we have continued to participate in projects with regional, national, and even international reach through the power of virtual teams.

During a year in which many industries and businesses languished, LS3P continued to build on our solid foundation and reach for new opportunities. Mark Levine joined the firm in March 2021 as Atlanta Market Leader, expanding our footprint to Georgia’s Upstate and the Atlanta metropolitan area. In short order, we secured office space, began adding staff, landed a major project win, and Mark became the Atlanta Office Leader. In August 2021, Olivia Frick joined the Savannah office team to lead business development efforts in the greater Savannah/northern Florida area, representing another exciting opportunity for growth into a new market.

B U S I N E S S I N T E G R AT E S W I T H P R A C T I C E Business Teams continued to support and enhance every aspect of the firm. The HR team did a phenomenal job bringing diverse brain equity from a much wider region to our team, both through summer programs and new full-time hires. In addition to energetic recruiting, the team focused on our employees’ personal and professional well being through a deeper feedback process, JEDI efforts, one-on-one assistance with tools and resources to assist our team members, and expanding resources for financial wellness and EAP/mental health benefit offerings. Our Technology Team provided the tools and expertise to enable smooth, secure hybrid operations, and accelerated efforts to streamline practice workflows with up-to-the-minute knowledge and standards. The Finance Team kept projects and payrolls running smoothly in a busy and productive year with an increasing project workload.

My 2021 highlight has definitely been moving back to Raleigh and rejoining the LS3P team as a boomerang.
ACADEMY Our 2021 Academy sessions highlighted a broad range of topics: The Practice of Practice, Practice Advancement Centers 101, Better Gatherings, Leadership, Client Relations, and Maximizing LinkedIn. Throughout the year, these valuable presentations, panels, and roundtable discussions promoted the work of LS3P’s thought leaders, enhanced the way we work, and introduced new topics for rich discussion.
STEWARDSHIP // firmwide resources
KNOWLEDGE TEAMS AMPLIFY OUR EXPERTISE LS3P’s resources for firmwide knowledge sharing and collaboration are unparalleled. In 2021, our Knowledge Teams continued to propel initiatives in sustainability (Integrate), design excellence (Alchemy), innovation (Ignite), risk management (Advance), and interiors (Image). In 2021, Advance worked diligently to improve the quality of LS3P’s Instruments of Service/Construction Documents by making them “complete, concise and correct” to reduce time required during the Construction Phase. The team also continues to develop tools that result in a more efficient workflow for document production and construction phase services. Image tackled several key goals established early 2021: looking for Ideas (both large and small) to raise the bar for teams and projects, breaking down barriers to collaboration and working as a team to support one another and the overall mission, focusing on Visual Planning, and creating opportunities for mentoring and coaching. Integrate crafted an energy guideline for the Higher Education practice area, the first of a planned series; updated LS3P’s Sustainability Action Plan; formed an Integrate Advisory Group; and pursued projects with a building performance focus Ignite structured the year around the theme of affordable housing, sponsoring a studio with UNC Charlotte exploring an affordable housing project in Charleston. The award-winning Passage Home pro bono project provided strategies to address “missing middle” housing. Read more about this great project on page 42. The firm also sponsored and participated in NOMA’s “Project Pipeline” summer camp for high school students. Alchemy focused on mentorship of design talent firmwide, and boosted academic engagement through the development of a lecture series and participation on design juries. The team also presented the first Magic Glue awards celebrating project storytelling, and hosted quarterly Roundtables to encourage ongoing dialogue on the topic of design excellence.

They raised awareness through events for Celebrate Diversity Month and Juneteenth, and worked tirelessly to implement the firm’s D + I Strategic Plan.

FOCUS ON AFFORDABLE HOUSING The issue of affordable housing impacts all of our communities, and we turned our attention towards designing solutions. We hosted Andrea Gomez, a National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) Fellow from Rice University, for a summer research effort into the roots of the affordable housing crisis in each of our cities. The firm also sponsored a fall design studio through UNC-Charlotte, with many team members helping to guide students through explorations based on a real LS3P affordable housing project in Charleston. Through the 1+ initiative, we worked with Raleigh’s nonprofit Passage Home to develop innovative strategies to provide affordable housing options in the historic South Park neighborhood.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Our continued participation in the 1+ initiative brought many opportunities to engage with our communities through design. To date, we have begun 25 1+ projects for schools, nonprofits, churches, and other organizations working to make our communities stronger. In 2021, these included a conceptual plan for Passage Home, a community center renovation in partnership with the Charlotte Hornets, a hostel for families of hospital patients in Tanzania, and transitional housing for the formerly incarcerated in Spartanburg. Look for information about a re-branding of our pro bono initiatives coming in 2022!

continuous evolution The year 2021 was in many ways an evolution of 2020. The pandemic continued, then paused, then came back with variants and vengeance. But we evolved. We stood on the foundations that we built in 2020; we worked with great collaboration, leveraged technology, deepened our expertise, depended on experience, and continued to forge design excellence and innovation. We practiced our learned resiliency and maintained balance. These things are becoming familiar, and our ability to trust each other is steadfast. For that, we are all grateful. LS3P’s strategic plan is built around this recurring theme of evolution, even to the extent that we applied the moniker “Evolution25.” Words - their meanings and intentions - matter. We
Marc Marchant CEO
thoughtfully chose “evolution” because our previous strategic plan, Vision2020, was sound and successful, and it established a vision and strategy that propelled the firm to achieve many accomplishments into the year 2020. At the completion of Vision 2020, it was appropriate and intentional to take stock of where we were and to evolve our vision and strategy to create a better path to success in 2025. Two years into this plan, we should all be proud of our achievements and enthusiastic about the future. The results have been outstanding. The team’s contributions to get there have been fantastic. This past year created a rhythm and cadence that is almost second nature. We have evolved our work weeks into a pattern of work/life integration while serving clients and producing great solutions. Our commitment to community is matched by our commitment to each other. It shows and it is felt. It is greatly appreciated. 2021 was an exceptional year in the evolution of our firm. Thank you for supporting each other and continuing to look to the future with the promise of the best yet to come. For that, we are grateful.
continuous evolution
