LREI MISSION STATEMENT

A leader in progressive education since 1921, LREI teaches children to be independent thinkers who work together to solve complex problems. Students graduate from our diverse community as active participants in our democratic society, with the creativity, integrity, and courage to bring meaningful change to the world.

Letter from the Board Chair

Dear LREI Community,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to express my deep appreciation for our community’s commitment to LREI’s success. Your loyalty, enthusiasm, and generosity in support of our progressive mission is captured in the work of our many committees and in the school’s philanthropic achievements during our Centennial Celebration year.

This year, our generous community contributed $1,464,244 to The Fund for LREI – a new record! We are so thankful for this year’s inspiring participation. I was particularly thrilled by the over $100,000 that came from alumni, inspired by the 6th Annual Alumni Giving Challenge and supported with a matching gift made by a generous alum from the 1960s.

In the spring, we celebrated the party of the century with the Centennial Shindig. I was overwhelmed by the generous support – a record-breaking $575,000 in gross proceeds! This is especially noteworthy given our unique “pay-what-you-can” ticket model. Thank you so much to the hardworking committee that put on such a fun and inclusive celebration.

We also launched the public phase of our endowment campaign (The Campaign for Progress: Ensuring the Vision) to increase our endowed funds to $20 million. Thank you to the many generous donors who have helped position LREI for success in our second century.

Above all, none of these achievements would be possible without the enthusiasm of countless volunteers, Phil’s leadership, and the dedication of our faculty and staff to make LREI the school community that we dearly love. I have never been more grateful for and proud of our community. On behalf of the trustees, thank you for your support of LREI. Your continued participation makes an enormous positive impact on our beloved LREI.

Dear LREI Community,

Thank you. Thank you for your support. Thank you for your commitment. Thank you for recognizing the importance of the progressive educational experience we offer. Thank you for celebrating our Centennial – 100 years of educational innovation and success.

When we began planning the Centennial Celebration in 2018, our goals were to increase pride and knowledge of our history and mission, celebrate 100 years of progressive education, honor our founder Elisabeth Irwin, and encourage our community to support LREI’s present and future.

From We Heart LREI Day to the History of LREI in 10 Objects to Founder’s Day, the Centennial Shindig, Street Fair, and the annual Alumni Reunion, our hardworking volunteers and staff provided so many moments of reflection, celebration, pride, and togetherness.

Our progressive program provides many opportunities and experiences that challenge students to develop the skills that are required to succeed in an ever changing world.

We are so grateful for the number of community members who support The Fund for LREI, Campaign for Progress, and Centennial Shindig and the overwhelming generosity demonstrated through these gifts. We could not fulfill our promise to our students without your commitment and we would not be able to honor Elisabeth Irwin’s legacy without your generous support. We are ever grateful.

Legacy Giving - The Elisabeth Irwin Heritage Society

Since its founding in 1921, LREI has remained true to founder Elisabeth Irwin’s vision, providing our students with a progressive program rooted in a fundamental love of learning and a connection to the real world. You can support her vision for the next 100 years and beyond with a planned gift to LREI. The Elisabeth Irwin Heritage Society, named in honor of the school’s founder, was created to recognize and thank those individuals whose thoughtful gift planning provides an ongoing legacy for future generations of students. Kellie Ferguson P’24, ’27

Kellie and her family joined LREI in 2017 when her girls Violet and Holly were in sixth and third grade, and she has been an active member of the community ever since. After taking on various PA responsibilities and co-chairing the Community Service Committee, she is excited to take on the role of PA co-president for the next two years. Originally from Australia, Kellie and her husband Neal moved from Melbourne to New York City “for two or three years” some 16 years ago, fell in love with the city, and decided to call it home. With an education including a Bachelor of Business and postgraduate studies in industrial relations and human resource management, she has worked as a human resources consultant and manager in graduate and executive recruitment. She has specialized in areas relating to change management, remuneration strategies, upward feedback, and performance management. Currently, Kellie serves as president of her condominium board in Tribeca and in her spare time enjoys working on an interior design course with the NYIAD.

Amanda Goodwin P’27, ‘29

Amanda has spent 22 years teaching in independent schools in Brooklyn and lower Manhattan. Though she worked for five of those years in the admissions office at Berkeley Carroll School, her great love has always been for sixth graders. At LREI, Amanda teaches sixth grade social studies and runs a sixth grade homeroom. She also co-facilitates a women’s affinity group and helps with middle school admissions. Amanda is married to Jake, and they have two children, currently in sixth and eighth grade at LREI. In her free time, Amanda sings in Susan Glass’s adult chorus, The Glass Menagerie, reads novels, grows vegetables, and finds any excuse to travel. As a child, Amanda attended Friends schools in Pennsylvania and credits them with her love of school communities and her commitment to working for social justice. She received a bachelor’s degree from Smith College in world religions and a master’s degree from Bank Street College of Education in adolescent education with a focus on social studies.

Jennifer Sagum Moss P’29, ’31, ’33

Currently serving as the head of global advertising at Marc Jacobs, Jen leads the creative and media strategy across omnichannel experiences for all brand pillars. She also sits on the board of Enwoven (a technology start up) and mentors a number of small businesses in the fashion and lifestyle spaces. Jen graduated from the University of Washington, where she played lacrosse and majored in art and art history. Jen has three daughters at LREI (grades 6, 4, and 2), has been an active member of the PA since 2017, and served as a marketing Co-chair for LREI’s Centennial Celebration.

Shoy McKen ’04

Shoy has been an active member of the LREI community for over two decades, following in his sister’s footsteps, in attending the high school. Shoy remains an active alumnus. Shoy is the managing partner of D22 Capital Advisory, where he is responsible for the firm’s investment services: acquisitions, structured finance, and joint venture partnerships. Before forming D22 Capital Advisory, Shoy led the Capital Markets team at Lev Capital, a tech-driven debt advisory. He was a market analyst at OCO Global, a foreign direct investment consultancy focusing on international real estate investments and economic development incentives.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Shoy generously donates his time to several philanthropic organizations, such as the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy. Shoy seeks to contribute to organizations that have a positive compounding effect on communities, large and small. As a Board member of Project Helping, Shoy believes building a strong and sustainable community starts with positive and meaningful interactions. Shoy attended Columbia University after his amazing years at LREI. He lives in Brooklyn, is an avid endurance cyclist, and is a proud uncle of many!

J. Louis (“Louie”) Sharpe P’30

Louie and his wife Michele joined the LREI community when their daughter Peyton entered the 4s. Louie’s professional career has principally been at AEA Investors which he joined in 1998 and he is still employed there as a partner. AEA Investors was founded in 1968 as a private investment vehicle for a select group of industrial family offices. Today, the firm manages funds that have more than $15 billion of invested and committed capital and those funds focus on investments of private equity, mezzanine and senior debt in small and middle market sized companies. As part of his role at AEA, Louie has been a board member for several of its portfolio companies, and he also serves on the board of the Numotion Foundation, a not-for-profit whose mission is to support people and causes that work towards enhancing the lives of people with disabilities. Louie grew up in Florida and Tennessee, and graduated from Yale University with a degree in economics and mathematics. He now resides with his family in Tribeca.

Harriette Thomas P’33

Harriette Thomas did not hesitate to roll up her sleeves and jump right into the LREI Community. During her daughter’s first year in the 4s, volunteering with The Fund for LREI, as it was crucial to her to contribute to making LREI better and stronger. For the past two years, Harriette has been Lower School co-chair of The Fund for LREI and plans to continue the position. She has also served as a class representative for the 2019-2020 school year. Harriette received her Bachelor of Science in psychology at Georgia State University. She relocated from Georgia to New York in 2008 to pursue her career in fashion merchandising and design. After 10-plus years in the fashion industry, she ended her career as the director of sales and production for multiple fashion brands. Harriette has made a switch to the architect and design field, where she currently works in marketing as the brand manager for JennAir. Harriette has lived in Brooklyn with her partner David Bess for over 10 years. Originally born in Liberia, Harriette remains entrenched in her African culture. Harriette and David have two daughters. Piper is an LREI second grader and Jhett is 15 months old. In her spare time, she enjoys crafting, event planning, and hot yoga.

A community for parents to advocate and support Black students within the school’s mission of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
