JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER
Whittier Junior High School was poet, John Greenleaf ¼~1tt1er. He was 1807 in East Haverhill, Massadhusetts. named after a great born, December 17 1 The house in which he was born is still standing and is used as a shrine, and its chief room has been restored to the condition in which it was when the boy was living in it, the recollection of whose experience inspired that idyl of . New Eng.land 11r·e, · . • "Snow-Bound."
The home life which the boy led, was one · of many hardships. ~fu1ttier's companions of his own age were a . brother and two sisters.
Whittier obtained his educ&t1on in an Academy. He taught a district school a few w~eks and aided a merchant with bookkeeping. In the meantime he continued to write both verse and prose for the newspapers. When he was twenty one years old he entered a printing office in Boston -where he was editor of one of the newspapers. He occupied himself with writing papers on temperance and the tar1~f, &nd with verses and tales. He remained with Colliers for a year and a half, and then returned to his father's farm.
During his life time he wrote many poems which were published in magazines and in book form.
Whittier died at Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, September 7, 1892, et the age of eighty-five years.

Physical Education is fun for both boys and girls and enjoying a fast game of basketball is Karen Leuschner and Ma~y Gilbert.
The trampoline is a favorite in the boys Physical Ed. class and Tom .bee.ch is showing his skill to his classmates.
Many finished products have been made in the woodwork classes and shown here is Steve Birkmann sanding his end table.

We have had so~e very interesting assemblies this year. One that was especially informative as well as interesting was a first-aid assembly sponsored by Mr . Jenkins. His able assistants were Linda Finley and Larry Theesen.
A former Whittier student came back with his helper to show us sane fine archery shots. we were ali very interested in their showmanship.

Our Sweetheart Assembly is ·al.ways one of our nicest assemblies and this year was no exception. The girls ocI tette, composed o.f Cynthia Schmidt:, Sharon Anders on, Mary Gilbert, Linda Finley; ! Linda Harrison, Sharon Sipma, Rosemary Long, and Vick~ Simpson, sang some lovely numbers.
The three trumpet players did n gocd job at the Sweetheart assembly, They are Gary Prey, Melvin Fisher and Larry Comer.
A speciality number for the Sweetheart assembly was performed by Dianne Schwindt and Bonnie Biedeck.
The following people were attendants for the Sweethearts, Linda Finley, Bernie Miller, Spndy Young, Linda Harrison, Lucille Heurnphreus, ~mron Sipma, and Charles McGowan.
One of our most enthusiastic activities during the neon hour is our dancing room. Here both boys and girls gn to have fun Rnd enj y themselves.
