The spotlight was on us as the year began. Our expectations were high in everything from Student Life to Academics. We starred in action and adventure-packed episodes, writing scripts individual to our lives. With each take, we were one step closer to adulthood. As our performances came to a close, we took our hows, ready to become the Stars of Tomorrow.

We each ·star in our own "movies," writing the script as we go along. Guest appearances are made by our friends and families, adding variety to our lives. We shoot on location, traveling far and wide in the hopes of finding the perfect scene. Our discoveries, both good and bad, are sharedthroughouttheyearand together make up ... the Student Life.

Who ' s that new guy on the football field? No it 's not another football player, it's Wally McKnight! Wally made his debut as our mascot at the homecoming pep rally. Production of Wally started in the summer and was finished in early October. Wally was made by Bonnie Zinsmaster, who also made East ' s Martin Spartan Junior Jody Briggs was the connection to Zinsmaster. There are six people who portray Wally , dividing up who goes to each event. They are seniors Joe Kopp, Jamie Hunt , and Tim Schragg, and juniors Dan Scheerer , Laura Krenk, and Julie Herr.

Students voted on the name for the mascot the week before Homecoming . few of the choices were · Ned Knight , Dwight the ·ght , and Wally Mcht. Each person had to present a prepared one minute skit and an impromptu skit. They were presented with a situation such as ' You have just won the state football game what do you do? Everyone agrees that Wally was a great addition to our school. He helped to boost school spirit and helped make the students and other fans rally behind Southeast at the athletic events he attended .

Lights .. . Camera .. . Action! The stage was set and excitement filled the air as the curtain opened From a distance , you could hear the cheers of pirates as they came close to the mainland Light slowly trickled onto the stage , and the story of love , war, orphans and a Pirate King began. Junior Jenny Wyatt , who played Ruth , said the musical was , "A wishful dream that became a true reality and is now a wonderful memory . "

Pirates of Penzance was one of the largest productions ever put on by Southeast , and most definitely one of the most successful. People do not always realize the time it takes to transform your "Average Joe " into a Modern Major General and the auditorium into the coast of Great Britain at the turn of the century. Juni o r Stephanie Bonne , who was the Make-up Crew Chief , said that she , "was always busy backstage organizing everyone so it would be fun and not chaotic. "

Those who didn ' t appear on stage also played a vital part of every production . There are sets to be made , lights to be setup , costumes that need

to be prepar e d , and h o urs o f practice , practice , and more practice! Senior Jill Yakel , who helped to create the costumes , said she , " was praying that the belts would not break. "

Cast members , the o rchestra and other important members of the play stayed each night to work on the production Sophom o re Heidi Roemer, who played Mabel in the production said , "Practices would last late into the night S o metimes we were at sch o ol until 11:00 at night. " Junior Joe Lauber said that , " Contrary to popular opini o n it did not take much practice at all to learn the fast rhythm of the lines of the Modern Major General. Ms. Noonan just gave me a tempo and I went along with it. "

Finally, it was time to show off their talents . The play was performed thre e times during the first week of November The majority of the cast agreed that Friday night was the best night to see the play because there were the fewest mistakes . Southeast will always remember the Pirates of Penzance.

Time for a change , or maybe several of them. New policies , facilities , and administration helped to make this year unique

Probably the most controversial changes were those of closed campus for sophomores and the fact that students were required to carry !D ' s at all times

"The closed campus issue hasn ' t really stopped sophomores going out to lunch. The card monitors aren ' t at every door. It doesn't take a genius to go to another door ," stated sophomore Sarah Richmond.

New portable classrooms and the eight period day were added to help alleviate the problem of overcrowding. With the increased size of the student body " there just wouldn ' t have been enough room without them ," a ccording to Assistant Principal of Instruction Dr. Nesha Schumann . "You can either sleep in in the morning or get out of school early. It 's nice that now

we have a choi ce ," stated senior Jennifer Nicoletti.

Dr. Nancy Be cker took over as principal. Mr. Pat Hunter-Pirtle , formerly the English Department Chair at Southeast , rejoined the staff as vice-principal after serving as superintendent of a school in Kansas , and Mr. Larry Munksgaard was awarded the job of athletic director. On e of his new ideas was holding a fall sports pep rally on the night of the state championship football game to recognize fall sports

Dr. Becker, former East High vice-principal , compared the school ' s friendly atmosphere to ' that o f a small town . "Th e students have been really accepting of someone brand n e w ." She al s o added , "I am really looking forward to my career here at LSE "

Behind every successful production lies a dedicated cast, filled with diversity. Each member is unique and contributes strengths that are individual to them. However, the actors and actresses work together to ensure a productive year. Along the way are many ups and downs, which a truly talented crew can overcome. This cast is made up by the People.

"I met a guy that was a late model racer at the first race I went to I began hanging out with him and his pit crew. That ' s how I got interested ," Fisher said .

The race Fisher was in was 250 laps around the quarter mile track Even with six flat tires and many near accidents Fisher came in 10th out of 110 cars Fisher hasn ' t raced since then , but plans on starting again after she ' s out on her own.

Why would someone drive four hours for a music lesson? According to senior Matt Shores the reason is to become the best cello player he can be. "I drive to Des Moines every week because that's where George Work , my music teacher lives ," states Shores . Shores has played the cello for five and a half years . Katie Vigna, a so phomore cheerleader for Southeast, worked hard over th e s ummer to get a spo t on the cheerleading squad that went to London for the New Year's Day Parade, along with one other sophomore cheerleader, Marissa Muller. To get there she had to audition in front of hundreds of other cheerleaders who attended the summer camp that s he was at. While in London, not only did she march in the parade but also she was able to tour the rest of the city.

"Most people don ' t realize how much time cheerleading take s . You really learn how to manage your time," Vigna said.

Practicing the guitar for an hour every night may not sound too enjoyable, but for sophomore James Valentine it is all worth it.

After two years of playing, the practice has paid off. Valentine is lead rhythm for jazz band

Valentine maintains that playing guitar for jazz band is fun, despite the hours of practice. He was thrilled when he received a chance to try out for jazz band.

Valentine is happy that he is able to share his talent with the rest of the school. "Being in ja,zz band is really fun because it gives me a chance to play the guitar in school," claimed Valentine.

Rehearsal is a big part of any production, taking hours of practice to achieve the perfect scene. During the performance, suspense mounts until the final confrontation, resulting in either victory or defeat. Determination and motivation, together with support from the audience, brings the athletes to the intense competition of the Sports.

Necessary Roughness

Hard hitting , helmet smashing action! The varsity football games were full of just that. Fans crowded into Seacrest Field eight times during the season to watch the two-time defending state champs in action.

With much of last year ' s team returning , the Knights were favored to take state for a third consecutive year The team , however, did not view their superior ranking as an advantage "This is just another season. You can ' t put so much pressure on yourself ," stated senior Ted Butler

The Knights treated every game the same. "On game day ," recalled senior Shawn Christen, " we couldn ' t shave , and we learned schemes ."

The Knights were prepared for everything , including injuries. Zac Duval ' s leg was broken against Lincoln High , but that did not stop the Knights from winning 34- 7 . Another serious injury occurred in the state semifinals against Creighton Prep During the second quarter, Shawn Christen was sacked , and in the process , his hip was dislocated. The fans fell silent as the ambulance drove onto the field . At that point , many lost hope for the Knights who were trailing Hope , however, was quickly restored when backup quarterback Jason Brolhorst , senior , tossed the ball to senior Ty Goode , who then hurled the ball downfield to senior Giff Anderson. After

the play was completed , the team was on the one yard line . The Knights advanced to the state finals that night after beating Prep. 29-20

One fan said of the game ,"I felt sorry for Shawn , but he was a sacrificial lamb. His injury motivated the rest of the team to comeback. "

"The key to our success was team unity ," explained senior Chris Hallgren , "without it , we would have gone nowhere ." Although the Knights lost 14-7 to Hastings in the finals , their season was one to be proud of.

Junior Nate Lueders added that " Coach Caster was great , he helped us get along and he brought about great unity ."

Both of the teams worked hard to reach all of the goals they set for themselves. Junior Billy Zahm summed the year up perfectly when he said "We had a really great team this year With a lot of hard work and determination we will have a team that can get to the state championship next year, and maybe even win it! ,,

The 12th place Nationally ranked LSE girls ' Cross Country team were undefeated for the fifth year in a row , and won the State Championship title. The Knight women have also won seven State Championships , more than any other class A school.

"The hard work of summer training and running together in practice helped us stay together during the meets ", said junior Andrea

Baker , explaining the teams ' " pack attack " running style .

The Junior Varsity runners displayed a competitive attitude in finishing at the top of the reserve meets . Sophomore Reserve runner Felicia Fowler said " We worked hard to challenge ourselves and show how much potential we had ".

'Tm extremely proud of these girls because they have shown great sports-

manship and have been excellent competitors all year ", said Head Coach Ted Larson , "There is no substitute for hard work " . Future undefeated seasons and State Championships will be their goals , while maintaining a positive attitude and strong team unity .

The Running Man

Imagine meeting the Boys ' Cross Country team for the first time. With numerous state championships behind them and some of the state's best high school runners, the team ' s record of excellence could be quite intimidating. This first impression faced junior Eric Witte, who moved from North Platte at the beginning of the year. A large team, intense workouts, and competition

among team members added up to changes Witte had to adjust to. But, he also noted that there was, "A lot more enthusiasm and commitment to continue a tradition ."

Witte joined varsity teammates senior Chad Lay, juniors Cortney Lamb, Luke Taylor, Justin Hyde , James Wasson , and freshman Jason Nunes. Except for Lamb, competing in the state meet was a first for the

varsity team. Taylor felt this contributed to their fourth place finish, but it was also a "good experience for next year."

Much of the team's success was due to focusing on goals, enthusiasm, and a team effort, which resulted in individual victories.

sprained her neck while she was practicing her routine on the balance beam. Muller was rushed to the hospital and was done for the season .

The t e am never lost hope ; the injuries helped keep them together "With all of the injuries , we stayed together as a team so that we could make everyone injured proud to be part of our team ," said sophomore Lisa Bukacek

What really kept this team together was coach Jane Brower. "Jane was the best coach LSE has ever had , without her we would never gotten as far as we did , or learned to believe in ourselves ," said junior Kirsten McGowan . With everything they faced they had a great season

Winners Take All

Winners. That's what the members of the boys gymnastics team were this year. This year ' s team consisted of seven gymnasts , more than in recent years . The team had two gymnasts who took first and second in their state meet. They both competed on the team last year as freshman , and now as sophomores.

Sophomore Derek Leiter finished first in the state meet , and second in the

conference meet which places you for the state meet. "I was overwhelmed when I found out I had placed first in the state meet , it made me feel like I really accomplished something ," said Leiter. Leiter has competed for many years and is ranked eighth in the nation.

Sophomore Cory Adams has been in gymnastics since he was just a kid . He ' s been in all kinds of meets ,

and is ranked 16th in ·the nation Adams placed second in the state meet , and first in the conference meet. " I was really amazed when I took first at the conference meet , but I was even more amazed when I placed second in the state meet ," Adams said . Senior Nicole Sibert had several superstitions of her own , such as doing everything twice; walking onto the court twice , turning on the lights twice , putting up her hair, and pulling up her knee pads twice .

" If you ' re in sports a long time , you notice little things you do when you have a good game , and then you ' ll do it again next time ," Sibert explained . The team got along well on and off the court.

Where can you go to see the perfect set or a terrific spike? A Reserve or Junior Varsity volleyball game , of course!

Both teams worked hard to refine their techniques . "We did a lot of drills and sprints , and we focused on things that we needed to improve ," said sophomore Shannon Dorsey .

Team unity was also a big part of the teams ' preparations. "We wanted to win

and we had to work together to accomplish this ," junior Sherry Schultz said . Sophomore Kama Hand added , " I think if we were totally ready and mentally prepared , and we stayed focused on the game , we could beat anyone. "

In any sport it is important to work as a team , and these girls did . " I think everyone did a good job of leaving their individual identities off the court , and tak-

ing on a team identity during games and practices ," sophomore Megan Littrell said All their efforts paid off when the Reserve team finished second in the city , while the Junior Varsity team placed second in the Lincoln Public Schools Tourney.

A joke held throughout the year was when one of the golfers hit a long drive

Proper preparation is the key to winning anything, especially basketball. The boys' varsity team knew that. From reading scouting reports to keeping with their superstitions, the team prepared for every game as though it was their last. "The night before a game, we'd go over to Matt Kepler ' s and think about the game," stated senior Jordan Mawson "We have

'Blue Chips

a lot of superstitions, too." Among those superstitions were wearing the same socks and boxers for every game. "I always wear my Tweety-Bird boxers when I play," claimed senior Jared Cook

Though the team was disappointed by the way the season ended, losing to LNE in the final seconds of the District semifinal, they were satisfied with their

overall performance. "We played a lot of really good games, " said Cook . " The Northeast games were disappointing, but we played with all we had." Mawson added , " Our team was really strong. We had a lot of versatility, speed, and depth."

In the end, the team agreed that they were a pretty great team.

If the junior varsity boys' season is any indication, the future looks pretty good for boys ' basketball at Southeast. The JV team defeated Northeast and Lincoln High to clinch the City title " I'll always remember the city game against Northeast," claimed Andy Voss, junior. "We played hard during the game, and even harder in over-time."

Bill Zahm, junior, said that the team 's success was due to "our friendship and camaraderie on and off the court." Voss agreed, and added, "The amount of talent on the team made a difference, too . We did not have just one star player, our team had a different set of leaders for every game."

The reserves also had a great deal of talent. "Our

team had a great deal of depth," claimed Andrew Curtis , sophomore. "We were lucky to have a really strong bench. You can count on any of the guys to get up and score points."

Both teams had their share of talent. According to Zahm, Coach Dobbs said it best, "We're an above average team and flat out studs!"

Hard work , dedication , and mental preparation were key factors to the wrestling team during their season . Wrestlers showed their hard work during daily practices that consisted of running two miles, learning new moves for 30 minutes , wrestling for ·ten minutes , and then jump-roping for 6-10 minutes.

Dedication was shown by going to practices and

keeping a strict diet. Junior Jason Mattison explained , "I can eat anything , but not a lot. "

Mental preparation for each match was another key element this season . When asked how one prepares for a match senior Rich Gilbert stated , " I focus in on my wrestling opponent and stay focused ."

Senior Ryan Munter does just the opposite . "I don ' t have anything special I do

Hours of work were spent behind the scenes writing the script in order to make the grade. Sometimes we needed to fail in order to succeed, hut we always had support from our directors, the teachers. They helped us memorize and perform the lines so that we could focus on the big picture ... the Academics.

IBy the Numbers

The concept of teaching math has changed dramatically since last year. It changed from individual learning with a lot of teacher input to more of a group setting with less teacher input. The new method of teaching was supposed to teach the ability to work with a group, as well as self-motivation.

Another change in the math department is the restructuring of the Geometry textbooks. The new

books rely less on the use of two column proofs and more on the use of other methods.

Everything happening with the math department will change the way math is taught for many years to come

Science tea c her s u s ed many interesting method s to help students grasp difficult concepts

Randy Emry climbed on top of his desk and jumped off to explain electron energy levels , and Jim Bertrand sang songs with his banjo to explain biology terms

One of the most unusual ways to help students was

Steve Nelson ' s in his Anatomy and Physiology classes . H e organized a scavenger hunt before Halloween using clues that involved Anatomy terms The students ended up in a room where Mr . Nelson was dressed up as Dracula and he explained properties of blood to students .

Song of the Thin Man

Psychology class is a place where 22 people can get together and discuss psychological concepts . We do have lectures and tests , but most of the class is focused on students (and me) forming our own opinions about what we believe to be true about psychology. There are several different psychological theories to explain any type of human behavior, so it's vital to be able to critically analyze theories and decide

which ones are most valid . We discuss theories , talk about e xamples , read psychology - related literature , and do independent projects we choose to study. We also have bunches of fun talking , arguing , deciding , telling , showing , playing , doing experiments , and just trying to figure out humans in general.

The Southeast Business and Marketing Department offered two different accounting classes. They utilized math and organizational skills to create balance sheets, income statemen ts, retain earning statements, and statements of owners equity. The classes involved specific, detailed work that required time and energy. Accounting was a full year class. College Accounting was also offered, a class where students could receive partial

college credit. The class worked on a large project called " Varsity Sporting Goods. " The students had to keep records using all of the different techniques they had learned. They had four different exams over the information in the project. ily. -

Football games, parades , and contests are what marching band is all about.

Year after year, the LSE marching band participates in the Star City Parade , the LPS band contest, the Nebraska State Band Members Association, and many other contests in smaller towns.

This year's marching 1 band travelled to Chicago for a Festival of Music. Each of the members going had to do many different things

to raise money for the trip. They did such things as selling coupon books and holiday necessities like wrapping paper and tin cans full of cookies. Others stuffed newspapers for the Lincoln Journal-Star and cleaned up the Bob Devaney Sports Center after all the basketball games .

Have you ever wondered why two weeks out of every semester, room D100 turns into a pre-school classroom? Well, the students in the Exploring Childhood classes are responsible. As part of the class, they hold their own pre-school.

Any child can attend the LSE pre-school. Many teachers even bring their own children. The class spends time preparing

activities, and transforming the room into a place fit for kids of this age. Besides having fun, students are ' able to learn from working with and observing the children . Exploring Childhood students also get the , chance to go to an elementary school where they observe a class and study kids of that age group

Concentration Sophomore cameron Agee draws a two dimensional pict , re in a 2-D Art class taught by Chuck Schanou. A steady hand and a big era ,er were essential.

The Cameraman

Though many people think drawing is the only form of art , there are sever al others. Who ever thought that looking at an image produced by a camera could be art?

The most important thing to remember is that one little snap from a camera can produce a !if elong image and work of art.

The process of photography is long and one mistake could ruin dozens of pictures. That's why different classes were offered to teach us how to use a camera, produce images on paper , develop film , fix aperature settings , and change the battery in a came r a Beginning Photography , Photo Tech , and Photo Style were designed with all these skills in mind.

Have you ever wondered what school would be like without handouts on those wonderfully colored papers? Do you ever wonder how congested the halls would be like without someone to ask for your pass? Media technicians , paraprofessionals and campus supervisors are the answers to all of our questions Never would Southeast be able to function as well as it does without the constant work done by these individuals. Lawrence Riley , one of

the new campus supervisors hired by Southeast this year said , " Our work is never done, but it's a good job and the kids are great. " It is hard work , l:>ut they would agree that it is a rewarding experience which they will always remember

How I got into College

Somewhere between English , math , science, social studies , and other required classes , students found space in their schedule to insert interesting and unusual classes .

One of the more unusual classes offered was Latin, taught by Mrs. Shirley Roeber. Among some of the class activities were playing "Circus Maximus, " a game ,- th.at involved chariot races, ar:d wat c hing movies with Roman themes such as

"Spartacus. " " I decided to take two years of Latin because the universities I am applying to said that Latin would help me in the future, " claimed senior Matt Larson.

While some may think Latin is dead , it is alive and well at LSE.
