The Olympics also produced some disappointments. After Candadlan Ben Johnson set a world record of 9.79 In the 100 meters, he was disqualified after testing positive for steroids. ·

The cast of The Sound of Music know that practice makes perfect.

Subs Here to Stay..... . For A While

During the 1988-89 school year, Northeast relied heavily upon substitute teachers. At times, more than 20 substitutes were in the building on one day.

More often than not, there was such a demand for substitutes in an area of study that substitutes from one area would teach in another area. During a math conference, a shortage of math substitutes arose. Thus, many teachers certified in teaching English and Social Studies had to muddle their way through two days of math and computer classes.

Because of extended absenses due to various illnesses, some substitute teachers spent several weeks here.

One such sub was Pat Martin who stepped in after Daryl Blue was home recuperating after an appendectomy. She also took over for Liz Schulenberg when she left school to have her baby.

Martin who has been substituting for three years, sees her job as "carrying on and trying to do what the teacher would normally do."

Marty Rejcha represented another substitute who had the opportunity to spend several weeks at Northeast. Rejcha stepped in while Mel Berka recuperated from heart surgery. Rejcha, like Martin, also feels that carrying on as the regular teacher would, is important. However, Rejcha tried to add a little extra during his stay. For the benefit of all of Mel Berka's classes, Rejcha arranged for some actors, who assumed the role of Civil War Soldiers, to come and perform for the students.

Students in Gale Cook's classes also had the opportunity to spend a length of time with a substitute while he had surgery on his leg. For the most part they spent time with Mark Smith. But, on occasion, Marilyn Veomett, took hold of the classes.

Most of the substitutes that spent time at Northeast have some common observations about the students here. Dennis Brislen, a Social Studies and P.E. teacher, who subbed in the math department during a mathematics conference, sited that the students at Norhteast, "are cooperative, and very helpful. They also have good study habits." Rejcha, too, has high regards to those who attend Northeast. He said, "I'm proud of the accomplishments of the Northeast students."

Student Teachers Assets to NE

Student teachers. Most people, who hear those words, think of those college students that sit in one or two of their classes.

But, what few people know, is their purpose to us (the students), and them (the teachers). To us, they're a break from our regular teachers when they (student teachers) get to teach us. The student teachers are in the classroom to learn how to teach effectively to begin with.

For the spring of 1989, the one departement that has the most student teachers is Mathematics with eight students. They are Laurie Carver for Rick Collura, Nanet Cline for Sandi Vercellino, Gregory Kush for Jim Campbell , Julie Pribnow for Janet Emery, Phillip Rother for Buren Thomas, Brian Sandall for Bill Rogge, Joseph Torrez for Steve Carr, and Keith White for Bob Els.

Out of the total 19 student teachers, all but two are from University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Those two are White for Els in Mathematics, and John Winter for Jeff Klintberg. Both White and Winter are from Nebraska Wesleyan University

The departments of Science, Physical Education, Business Education, English, History, and Music all have two student teachers. Band has one. Adding up, it seems there should be 23 student teachers instead of only 19. However, two teachers, Kent Heier and Tonya White help out two different teachers each. Heier has English with Nesha Schuman and History with Hank Willemsen. White has History with Tracy Stauffer and English with Elaine Caster.

Dedicated, bright, fantastic, spontaneous, organized, tolerant, patient, and professional were just a few words used to describe the teachers by their understudies.

New Teachers Make Themselves at Home

Mrs. Marguerite Haerther, Mrs. Cindy Karel and Ms. Sue Resz are the three teachers new to Northeast for the 1988-89 school year.

Karel was teaching part-time at the Bryan Learning Center when three full-time positions opened up in Lincoln. Of the three, she chose the Northeast science opening over one at Lincoln High and the other at Southeast. The reason that she chose Northeast was because she knew the people she would be working with, and she liked the administration.

Ms. Resz teaches in the social studies department and sponsors debate.

The reason she came to Northeast is that she heard several good comments about the Lincoln system from other teachers and the administration. This is her first teaching position , and was probably one of the few teachers who commuted daily to Lincoln from Crete.

Mrs. Haerther is a member of the Northeast English Department, and teaches in the REA program. She said she has seen a lot growth in her students and said Northeast's staff has been The Reading Department welcomed Marguerite

Students Offered New Experiences

Northeast added three new classes to the curriculum for the 1988-89 school year. The classes were Russian History, Finite Math and Applied Chemistry.

Bruce Waters, a member of the social studies department, taught the Russian History class. Finite MathwastaughtbyJim Campbell, and science teacher Dave Hunter was the instructor for Applied Chemistry.

"It is one of the few electivies offered to students through the social studies department, and there were a number of students interested in it," Waters said about the Russian history course.

Waters also said that the recent improvements in relations between the Soviet Union and The United States increased the public's interest in Russian culture and society.

Applied Chemistry was offered because there was a limited amount of math involved in the course.

While the enrollment was down this year in the new course, Hunter expects a larger class list for the 1989-90 school year.

Finite Math gives students the choice of either taking Calculus or Finite Math.

According to Campbell, the course is enjoyable to teach and does offer students a choice in math department courses.

Northeast Takes on "New Look"

The 1988-89 school year was full of new things to look at throughout the building.

Before school even started in the fall, workers were giving the building a face lift. They scraped and washed out every section between the bricks. As many people remember, this project was so time consuming that the workers were not finished before the school year began. Thus, they created noise distractions and the dust from the bricks created messes in the classrooms if the windows were left open.

Northeast had an opportunity this year to utilize a new version of taking attendance and reporting absenses to parents. This year the office possesed an attendance scanning machine that processed the sheets that the teachers filled in the rectangles on for those students who were absent. If a student was reported absent, then another machine would call up the student's home and give a prerecorded message that he/she was not in school today.

The computer centers at Northeast also were keeping up with technology this year. All of the Apple II GS computers were replaced with the newer Macintosh Plus computers. These computers have with them an internal hard drive that has programs already on them, as well as an external drive that can have discs put in it. An Army travelling recruiting station travelled to the high schools of the United States. While Inside, the students viewed a high tech slide show set up on three screens and coreographed to music. The messages provided by the shows explained the Constitution, and the three branches of government. After the show, students were able to ask the recruiters questions.

During Marty Rejcha's reign as substitute In Mel Ber k :- ~s classes, it was arranged to have a troop of actors co t 1e to Northeast and reenact scenes from the Civil War. T ie students were told to play the role of reporters and to a -;; k the soldiers question. The activity was designed to teach the students a little more about life during the t it 1e of the Civil War.

On Friday, March 3 an unexpected Ice storm arrived. Despite moans from disgusted parents, teachers and students, Lincoln Public Schools were the only schools In the area to remain open. However, the LPS administrators decided to compromise and announced that the schools would close early in the afternoon .

The League of Women Voters visited high schools to promote voting among the younger generation. Coming into the schools was to make It easier and more convenient for the students to register to vote. At Northeast, the students had the chance during their lunch hours to take advantage of this unique opportunity.

Close setbacks Sturt gridders

Despite a 33-32 double overtime win against Ralston to close out the season, the Rocket varsity gridders sputtered -to a disappointing 3-6 record in 1988.

Northeast was ranked No. 5 in the Lincoln Journal-Star's .,pre-season Class· A football ratings But Coach Bruce Reed's squad fell to Hastings in tne' season opener, 32-8.

Reed thought the high rating before the season had even started might have contributed to the dowrif all.

We were overconfident and not mentally prepared," Reed said of the lopsided loss.

But Northeast, bidding to end a five year string of losirg seasons, rebounded with wins over Linco(Q High and Fremont. The victories left the Rockets with a 2-1 record. ·· ,

However, a three point loss to Omaha Westside evened the record, and set the stage for a nosedive. The Rockets were shut out by Grand Island and Lincoln Southeast, two of the state's top teams.

Spirits weren't completely damaged by the losses to G.I. and the Knights

"I felt we played our best games ~gainst the top teams in the state, but we played badly against the lower-rated teams," senior Nate O'Connell said'.

Northeast had little time to lick its wounds, because a Homecoming battle against rival East High ga ined everybody's attention.

East took advantage of a fumble to post a 17-14 win, and ensured another.losing season for Northeast. An overtime loss !o Norfolk added furth~r frustration, before the' win over · Ralston.

Linebacker Brent Schwerdtfeger, who was named to the Lincoln Journal-Star's All-State team, led the team defensively with 50 unassisted tackles and 125 assists. Rob Fisher had five fumble recoveries, and Rodney Bradley was the top· receiver, catching 29 passes for 560 yards.

Unity is Key to Winning Season

Determination and a strong unity payed off as the Rocket Sophomore football team finished the season with a 5-2 record.

In the opening game, the Rockets took Papillion for a 7-0 win. But their luck wouldn't last forever. Soon the Rockets would fall to Southeast by a score 19-7. Team captain, Brain Allen, said that "they simply didn't play well in the (Southeast} game."

Triple overtimes became a commonality in the Rockets game play. In the first triple overtime game against Lincoln High, the sophs were able to end with a 18-12 win. Although in a similar game, the sophs lost to Norris 19-13 after being penalized for holding.

The team's biggest game of the season was against East. Due to a loss to East last season , winning this year became a major goal for the sophomores. They were able to end the season on a good note by defeating East 19-7.

A strong offensive line and a good defense pulled the team through a winning season. But, overall success can be attributed to the team's ability to play as an unit.

Reserves End Season On Even Note

The Northeast Reserve Football team ended with a 4-4 season record, despite their shakey season.

At the beginning of the season, there were nofany outstanding players that the entire team looked up to Although, throughout the season many players proved to be strong leaders. In addition, the team became stronger and more united as time progressed.

Many of the losses the players faced were in the last minutes of the games The most devastating loss was to Millard North, when the last play resulted in defeat. The Rockets kept their spirits despite these diappointments.

Northeast proved to be a powerful team, shutting out two teams, Lincoln East and Grand Island. The East game played early in the season boosted the confidence of the team. Then winning 7-0 overthe undefeated , #1 rated Grand Island in the last game, they finished even more confident and ready for next year.

Dustin Cleveland, led the team in tackles and Jeff Gaston led the team in interceptions. These two were moved up to the Varsity squad during the season.

East spoils spikers' Title hopes at state

After defeating Omaha Westside in the first round of the state tourney, 15-4, 15-8, the Northeast volleyball team faced a familiar foe, East High. ,

In three previous meetings during the season, the Rockets had defeated the Spartans twice. Most observers figured the semi-final matchup at state would determine the state champion. They were right.

Unfortunately for Northeast, the final loss to East was the one that hurt the most. The ,Spartans prevailed, 13-15, 13-15 in two of the most exciting matches in state tournament history.

The loss at state left Northeast ranked second in the post-season Top Ten. While disappointing, losing a chance at the state title didn't take away from a 18-7 record, winning the Northeast Invitational, winning the Northeast-Southeast Invitational, winning the Greater Nebraska Conference title, and capturing the district trophy.

Senior standout Kim Vokolek was selected to the first team All-City, AII-St,ate, and Super State. Carla Wichman was named to the first team All-City and second team All-State. Louise Carr and Debbie Wilson were both selected to the All-City second ,team and honorable mention All-State.

Sophslearnlesson; Finish season 4-8

Finishing with a 4-8 record is nothing to shout about, but there were positive aspects to the sophomore volleyball season.

When first of all considering the sophomore level is a level of learning, the record is a little easier to accept. Playing in their first year of high school competition , the squad members learnedthefinerpoints of the game.

Lessons learned started early for the sophomores. The squad lost its first five matches, winning only two games out of 12.

Undaunted, the team rebounded with wins over Lincoln High and Fremont before losing two straight to Southeast and Grand Island

An opening round loss to Southeast i n the first match of the LPS Tournament was erased with another win over Lincoln High.

In addition to the two victories over the Links, Northeast claimed another city win with a thrilling 15-5 , 15-17, 15-13 triumph over East.

Ward's JV Spikers Roll to 15-1 mark

Despite fielding a very young team, the reserve volleyball squad finished the 1988 season with only one loss in 16 matches. The lone setback came in the third match of the season against Beatrice. The Rockets evened the match with a 15-13 win, but lost 11-15 in the third and deciding game.

The season was filled with highlights Against city foes , Northeast was 2-0 against Southeast, 4-0 against Lincoln High, and 3-0 against East. The 9-0 city record wasn't an easy accomplishment. In the final match of the season , against East , the Rockets won the first game 1513, lost the second 8-15, then won the third game 15 - 13.

Northeast's reserves claimed the LPS title, and won the East Invitational by defeating Norris, Lincoln High, and East (154, 10-15, 17-15).

Two of the wins were special for Coach Brenda Ward. The Rockets defeated Bellevue East and Grand Island, the first time a Ward-coached reserve squad had defeated those schools.

The team had no trouble playing for Ward, according to Cassie Althouse.

"She is a great coach. We wanted to win for her," Althouse said.

Team unity was a major emphasis throughout the season. That helped the squad win a number of close ma~ches.

The varsity tennis team struggled in 1988 with a 1-8 dual record. + It was a difficult year for the Rockets to field a team loaded with sophomores because the rest of the city's tennis teams were probably the strongest in years.

Goals set by the Northeast natters had to be tempered with the knowledge that other schools had much more experience and talent. Improving with each ,meet and being competitive took over as top goals

"I think we made a lot of improvement this season, and things should look better for next year," netter Todd Wesslund said.

Coached by Jim Rathe, the Rockets' closest losing margin before the f meet was a 6-3 toss to Norfolk.

The Rockets finished 13th at the state meet , while Wesslund rece,ived the Sertoma Award for his participation in tennis.

Gymnasts perform Despite small team

Success is not necessarily measured by the number of wins and losses a team compiles during the season :

The 1988 boys gymnastics team didn't compile an impressive won-loss record, but individual goals were met and the team sought improvement throughout the season.

The girls did post dual wins over North Platte, Ralston, East, and Beatrice but lost to Southeast. The Rocket girls finished with a 4-1 dual mark. The boys team, which had difficulty fielding a full team, went 0-6 in duals.

"None of the guys had been in gymnastics much before the season, but they ended up accomplishing a lot," commented top girls' gymnast Brenda Thienet

Thienel was the only ;gymnast to qualify for the state meet, but failed to score any points .

Golfers struggle In renewal season

Girls golf returned as a varsity sport at Northeast in 1988 after an eight year absence.

While the team was inexperienced and failed to win any meets, those associated with the squad managed to learn valuable lessons about the game.

It became apparent early in the season that the Rockets weren't going to compete on the same level as other schools with established programs.

But that didn't stop the team from participating in three invitational meets, the conference meet, and the district tournament.

Coached by Kim Wiseman, the team was comprised of six girls who set a goal of shooting under 150. Before the season was finished, each golfer reached that goal.

The future of the sport at Northeast appeared uncertain at the·end of the season. Trying to build a program at a school not noted for its golfing interest would be difficult, at best.

But for those six who brought the sport back in 1988 , the experience was ever-lasting.

" For just being beginners, we had a successful season," commented jun ior Danna Ritchey.

Cross Country Exhibits Potential

Despite placing low in many of their meets, the Cross Country team finished the season with high spirits.

After months of hard wort.<, members of both the boy's and girl's teams were able to medal in competitions. The boy's medalists include Sophomore Jerimiah Johnson, Junior Jeff Graff, and Seniors Chris White and Nathan Lane. Girl's team members that brought home medals include Sophomore Amy Herman and Junior Amy Attenberger.

Little experience and a young team seemed to be the major setbacks. The squad was unable to achieve strong finishes at Districts. Therefore not qualifying anyone for state. There is a lot of potential for the coming seasons.

The Rocke t s fell to eventual state champion Millard South in the f in al game of the regu lar season, then opened the district tournament with a win over Southeast.

The v ictory over the Knights sent the Rocket s i"nto the d istrict fi nal game aga i nst second-rated East. The game was never a contest as the Spartans rolled to a convincing w i n by dominat i ng the boards and forcing Northeast into numerous turnovers.

The loss to East could have kept Northeast out of its _ fou rt h str aight trip to the state tournament. But it didn't. Thanks to the wild card system, third-year Coach Rick Collu r a's Rockets got into the state tourney where they faced Col u mbus in the first round.

"We we lcome the chance to show that we are a bette r t eam than t he way we played in the district final," Collura said when he found out Northeast was a w ild card team. "Thi s will be a great challenge for our team."

The game agai nst the Discoverers was i ndeed a cha ll enge So much so , in fact, that Northeast exited ea rl y for the second stra ight year. (See State Tournament pages)

Young team faces Top competition

A schedule laced with Top Ten teams isn't what an inexperienced basketball team needs to help build confidence.

That was the dilemma facing the Rocket varsity girls squad as Hank Willemsen closed out a 37-year coaching career.

Willemsen, the only girls varsity basketball coach Northeast has had since the sport was started in 1975, would rather have gone out on a winning note.

But while the team finished short on wins with a 4-15 record, it wasn't short on determination. As they struggled through a schedule filled with more talented and more experienced teams, the Rockets never quit.

"This team was as hard-working as any I've had," Willemsen said. "But, when you play as .many excellent teams as we did, it gets tough."

Willemsen announced his retirement from coaching shortly after the conclusion of the season.

"In coaching, it seems like you are always chasing rainbows," Willemsen said in an interview with an Omaha World-Herald sports writer. "The time has come for me to stop, and let someone else do the chasing. I haven't had any time with my family at Thanksgiving and Christmas for years. Now I'll have time to enjoy the holidays."

Columbus spoils State appearance

Coach Rick Collura called him a " rabbit". Northeast defenders probably had other names for Steve Scheidegger.

Just like the name of Norfolk's Chris Price will haunt Rocket followers from the 1987tournament, Scheidegger earned his place in Northeast history by scoring 33 points to pace the Discoverers' 79-68 win in the first round of the 1989 Big Show.

It was Price who hit a shot from deep in the corner to dash Rocket spirits in the title game of 87'. In 89', it was Scheidegger who sent Northeast to the sidelines.

"Al Schnabel {Columbus coach) is a magician with no secrets," Collura said in an inteNiew with Ryly Jane Hambleton of the Lincoln Journal-Star. "We got them in foul trouble and he pulled the Scheidegger rabbit out of his hat."

While the loss to Columbus was painful, Northeast gained some solace in the fact that the Discoverers were for real. So real, in fact, that they lost the state title by two points to Millard South.

Rodney Bradley hit a fade-away 30foot shot at the end of the third period to cut Columbus' lead to four with eight minutes left.

But Scheidegger drove for a basket, and after Mike Mueller completed a threepoint play, Scheidegger hit a free throw and scored again to give Columbus a 6152 advantage with 5:43 left in the game.

Four Rockets finished in double figures with Aaron Griess leading the way with 14 Rainer Kress added 13 , Ryan Elrod had 12, and Bradley chipped in 11.

Wattnem strikes gold For "Mac's Pack"

Some said Brett Wattnem's state championship was a surprise. In a season filled with ups and downs, Wattnem wasn't expected to capture the 160 pound state title

So much for predictions.

Wattnem, a senior who started wrestling in junior high, proved many observers wrong when he stepped to the top of the medal platform and accepted the gold medal. However, as he told a Lincoln Journal-Star sports writer, Wattnemwasn't surprised. _

"I knew, and my coaches knew, that I could do it," Wattnem said. 'Twas overlooked in the ratings, but I knew I was ready for state."

Of Northeast's seven state qualifiers, three placed in the top five of their weight divisions. Damon Nolting was fourth in the 130 lb. class, while Nate O'Connell finished fifth in the heavyweight division. Kreg Green was ahead in a. state match that could have put him into medal contention, but was pinned in the final 15 seconds.

"We were overlooked as a team, but we • ' realized as coaches, that the team had ability," McIntyre said. "We gave up dual points right away because we didn't have anybody to wrestle at the first weight. But, we wrestled well in tournaments and were second in the conference."

Other highlights included placing 10 wrestlers at the William Jewell Invitational, and consistently placing five or six in most tournaments.

Baus leads girls To tenth at state

A 6-3 dual record and a tenth place finish at the state meet highlighted the girls' swimming season.

The Rockets won their final three dual meets of the season, then scored 123 points at the Greater Nebraska Conference meet, before heading for the state meet.

Led by junior Jennifer Baus, the young team showed improvement throughout the season. Baus finished 3rd at the state meet in the backstroke and 4th in the freestyle. A relay team of Baus, Rebecca Eppens, Molly Rathe, and Shannon Landkamer was also a state qualifier. Angie Baus was also an individual qualifier.

"We had a young team, and that will be an advantage for next year," Coach Tracy Stauffer said. "But, I thought our swimmers picked up the slack from last year when we lost a lot of swimmers."

Jennifer Baus said the team was pleased with the season.

"We improved and we had a winning season," Baus said. "We'll work more on weights, and work longer and harder for next year."

Break two records

The 1988-89 boys swimming and diving team didn't qualify as many athletes for the state meet as the year before, but that didn 't stop the Rocket tankers from making some big waves in 1988-89.

Two school records were set, including one which snapped the oldest mark on the books.

Swimming in the state meet, sophomore Ed Muller clocked 22.29 in the 50 freestyle. Muller's time lifted the oldest record in Northeast swimming history from the books The old record of 22.60 was set by Jim Pickerel in 1968.

Junior Tony Rezek, also swimming in the state meet, shattered the 100 breaststroke mark of 1 :02.35 by touching out in 1 :00.91 The old record was co-held by Gus Hitz (1980) and Jim Geline (1984).

The squad got off to a rough start, losing its first three duals and finishing 11th and 9th, respectively, in the Knight Invitational and the Ram Relays.

But dual wins over Grand Island, Fremont, and Columbus boosted spirits and the Rockets closed out a satisfying season with a 12th place finish in the state meet out of 30 teams.

You are now the proud owner of one of the only 900 copies of the 1989 Lincoln Northeast ROCKET.

The 1989 Rocket displays the theme "We've Got the Look," which was a product of Stacey Cover and Amy Bibb's creativity. The cover boasts a 4-color photograph taken by Ty Vetter. The photograph and theme are accentuated by Pacific Green and Pink tool lines and lettering. All of which are applied on a black background and laminated.

The ROCKET returned to a full 208 pages after a years absence. The book's cost remained at $20.00. The pages in this year's book are printed on 80 pound Matte paper. The endsheets paper is Blue Granite.

A look inside will reveal a variety of type sizes and fonts. For the most part, 14 point Zapf Chancery was used throughout the opening and student mug shot pages. In the club, faculty, and academic sections, 11 point Helvetica made its appearance. Helvetica was also used in the sports' section but the size varied. The advertising type varied for each customer. All type was set in the Lincoln Northeast High School MERGER Lab or in the Publication Department, on the Macintosh Plus and Macintosh SE computers. All type was printed on the Apple LaserWriter printer. The ROCKET remains a school-pasteup book.

The Lincoln Northeast ROCKET was published by Walsworth Publishing Company located in Marceline, Missouri. The ROCKET staff was glad to again be represented by Mike Diffenderfer in Lincoln, and Brenda Search in Marceline, Missouri.

The ROCKET was assembled by the 1988-89 yearbook staff, which is a member of the Nebraska High School Press Association.

The photography credits are awarded to Richard Evans, of Evans' Studio, for the sports' team photos, and to Life Touch National School Studios for underclass and faculty portraits. All other photographs were provided by the ROCKET staff.
