Have you ever wondered what it is like to own chicken. Well Mrs. Karen Thacker went and got chickens because she was feeling down and thought chickens were a great positive distraction from COVID The chickens made her feel good and needed in a different way . She said her plan was to get two to three but ended up going home with seven hens and one rooster and since then has ordered nine more chickens. Lets just her husband did not like them at first but saw how happy she was and warmed up to them. She loves when her grandchildren come and help her They make great th erapy by hunting for the eggs and seeing what color the eggs are. Some of the pros are EGGS in all different shapes and sizes and colors Mrs. Thacker says the most wonderful thing is sharing the eggs with others She makes each and every set of eggs with love and · joy. The cons are that chicken ' s lives are hot that long and the fact they are easy prey even though the chicken coop is very protected.

The most important thing to do when playing a sport is to have a great time. That _is vyhat the Junior Varsity Boys Tennis did. Head coach Torrey Escamilla said that it was a good season even though things got off to a rough start. "Even though our competitors were better, we just had a fun, light, good year," said Coach Escamilla. .

"One difference between last season and this season is the most obvious one, but all the COVID-19 protocols that we had to follow. For example, everyone had to wear masks during practices and in the locker rooms. ff After the hour bus ride, we were ready for the challenge I felt quite nervous because it was my first game as a Link. After a slow start we started to get things done on the field . Just beating them by 1 point, 22-21. It was awesome, we were so proud of ourselves, and I felt a family bond after that game that I have never felt on any other football team that I've played on. The -rest of the season was even better. As a transfer student, I was very scared and nervous since I was the new kid. Julian Babhanob was very welcoming and I practiced with him a lot since we're both QB and LBs. He helped me get to know everyone on this outstanding organization, but most importantly this kid was one heck of a player . He played both sides of the ball every game and played every game on Varsity too. *He is a Sophomore.* He always left his heart on the field , running through tackles and throwing great passes and blowing up holes and getting tackles on defense He was an outstanding player; I can't wait to play with him next year."

"The 2020 football season had many twists and turns to say the least. Several unfortunate injuries ended the season prematurely for some of our key contributors. With that being said, I was very proud of how this team competed throughout the season. Cross-Country started as a form of running in the 19th century where runners would chase hares who would leave scraps of papers for them as a trail only now the only our Lincoln High Links aren't chasing hares they're chasing the victory that would eventually bring them to go to state cross-country

Regardless of what is said about the Lincoln High cross-country team they constantly pushed themselves to get the results that they wanted. Never letting up for even one second they pushed themselves all throughout the season and tried their hardest to get the results that they wanted to achieve. Even with the issues they had with COVID they continued to go the distance and achieve what they always wanted. It might've been a tough start to the season but the cross-country continued to look on the bright side of things.

COVID-19 makes playing sports more difficult, but that did not affect us in volleyball. HWe had a full understanding of what was happening and rose to the challenge and had fun" said coach Stephanie Wilcox. We had an up and coming year. Our best moment was when we won our first game agai.nst Lincoln Southeast. We had a strong rivalry and we won and set the tone for the rest of the year and we had a winning streak. Coach Wilcox gave out to the seniors because they stepped up and became leaders. Coach Wilcox said if there was anything that she could change from this season was our last game against Omaha Westside. If things went a little different we could have won. Overall it was an amazing season despite COVID-19.

talking with my teammates after we played at a tournament. Our teamwork is helping each other in any way we can , when we are having trouble We support each other by always being positive even when we may not be reflecting improvement. Conleigh Hemmer, is a teammate I look up to the most. She always has nice things to say and when I need help she is always ready to support me and my other teammates. Another favorite memory that I have is when Etienne Doerr forgets the proper footwear and golfs bare foot leaving the rest of us also having to walk bare foot around the course as we p(actices. I'm very thankful for having coach Elwood as our coach. he is the best coach a team could ask for. He got along with all the girls and there was never a full practice. He never pushed us to practice too hard and he left is on us to get better, which helped my score improve hugely"

One of their favorite courses to play was the Highlands. One of the players lowest rounds was a 88. The closest she had gotten to a hole in 1 was when she was playing pioneers and I was on a par 3, it got really close but didn't go in.

"Some advice that I would give to beginners is , don't be afraid to join, we will always take beginners, but when you start, just be patient and gentle because golf is a hard game ' mentally and it is sometimes frustrating when you can't hit the ball. But don't be upset if you don 't get it right away because this 1 takes time. Something that I do to get more Power , accuracy, and consistency in my swing is , I video tape my swings , I go through it, and I compare it to professionals. I look at how i stand and the professional player and then I correct myself and try again"- Conley Herner

"Tess Lawson , 10th grader, this is our second year golfing together. I gave her rides home from practice because she lives right up the street from me and our drives together were always one of the best parts of my day. We would just talk and listen to music and complain about school and it was super relaxing and cathartic.

"My team literally rocks, Elwood and Fargo are awesome coaches. If you are doing something wrong they are always their to correct and help you. Elwood and Fargo support us and I've honestly improved tons since I joined Freshman year. One teammate that I think was very supportive and helpful was Leliani Bell. Many of the girls said that they absolutely love being a Pomalink. They love supporting their school through cheering at football and basketball games. Others say that they admire the positive environment and growing close to the other girls They say that being a Pomalink has given them a second family.

A lot of the girls described their first performance as "exhilarating and nerve wrecking" but their favorite part about performing was when they came off the field and everyone started cheering!

Their first performance of the year was the Freshman day pep rally . Most of the girls were very scared and nervous , but they said the feeling after the performance was amazing. they looked back on their dance and said that they were very proud of themselves. they have improved so much as a team since then.

"There isn't one person I look up to on the team more than any others, as everyone has unique and amazing traits which make them a crucial part of the team We have some amazing vocal leaders who give good constructive feedback and keep everyone on track . This year the cheerleaders had some big changes in their season, from no cheer camp due to Covid-19, to starting the season late. With no cheer camp, this season the cheerleaders were still able to try out for the National Cheerleading Association's All American Cheer Squad through a video Sophomore Kelsey Camplin, juniors Maliah Patterson, and Novalee Schmit, seniors Kate Sullivan , Lesly Moreno, and Cassie White made All American for the 2020-2021 cheer season! This would be the last year for the Seniors on the NCA All - American Cheer team. Novalee Schmit, Maliah Patterson, and Kate Sullivan were able to attend the Varsity Spirit Special Event in Orlando Florida. "It was a very good experience and I had a lot of fun representing LHS at the Varsity Spirit Spectacular." Novalee Schmit said" Eveh though there was no pep rally for Freshman Orientation the Freshman Cheerleading Squad performed their first routine of the year, they recorded their routine for the virtual pep rally instead! This year the Freshman squad has a new coach Lisa Pope, this is her first year coaching at LHS! Pope was on the cheer, dance, and color guard team at Lincoln Northeast. Pope says ''I'm excited to get ba-ck involved with cheering!" The cheer teams were not able to get uniforms right away this year until October, instead they wore LHS Cheer T-shirts, and shorts! "Even though we didn't have the uniforms on, we performed great at the games" Varsity cheerleader l<elsey Camplin said.

It has been a wild COVID spirit week at LHS. LHS had to make many adjustments this school year because of the pandemic. For example, we had to cancel the homecoming dance and many students were bummed. The . homecoming football game was still on but students could not attend. Nevertheless, Teachers and students did their best to show their spirit by dressing crazy to symbolize our crazy year! Overall, Spirit Week was a success because many people dressed up and they had a blast!

As you may know zoom was pretty stressful. We are surrounded by so many items and distractions that you may not have even known what was going on half the time in class! "Procrastination is my number one skill right now! And don't even get me started on how stressed I am! I feel like there is so much work but not enough time to do it!" Says McKenzie Fuller.

This school year has been a little crazy with everything going on in the world, especially with Covid-19's reign of terror over the world and the presidential debate causing stress to students. The school districts have tried their best to be flexible with what is going on. By trying something new . Online school, or zooming into classes Zooming into class can cause all sorts of stress and difficulties such as, internet or connection issues, distractions, and teachers not being as flexible. I am a good example because I am a full time Zoomer. You can either be a full time Zoomer or do half Zoom-half school. Internet or connection issues are a big thing that has been huge in this year and causing a ton of stress between both teachers and students. On multiple occasions either the student or the teacher loses connection causing anxiety or stress. There has been a time that students are just 'unable to connect because they do not have a stable internet connection causing them to be counted as tardy even though they are on time but just can't get into the Zoom meeting . I have a ton of tardies and even some absence because of the fact that I was unable to get into the class, causes me to get in trouble at home and just makes me more annoyed with the school. There have been times that the internet just does not work at all at the school so teachers cannot even start the class which is a waste of

valuable time. When the teacher cannot this whole situation as if nothing is start the class then you cannot learn and different from a regular school day or that just rneans no class. school year. This school year has been very different and new to many students. We had a lot of changes happening to help keep everyone safe and avoid the spread of COVID-19.

One of our biggest changes is having to wear face masks. This is required in school and you cannot take it off during classes . By wearing a face mask we are protecting ourselves and others. Another change we had at Lincoln High School was our hallway rules. We have signs up telling us where we should go and to stay six feet apart.

Also a big change was having different groups We have students split up into two groups by last name and they switch which school days they attend. We also provide full time remote learning When students aren't physically in the building, they learn from home through Zoom By doing so we can limit how many students are in the building at a time and to help with social distancing Teachers and students are also sanitizing desks and hands after every class of the day.

Due to these new changes , school can be hard on some students and how they are getting their education . But this is what is best for students and will help keep the ~isk of spreading Covid -19 lower. Lincoln High School is trying their best to keep everyone safe but also provide a good learning environment.

This season of bowling started out fun We had new bowlers who were ready to learn the game. Couch Lisa Thiessen said "the greatest moment was seeing all the support that each bowler gave to their teammates .". The worst moment of bowling ·was not eing able to finish the season due to the Covid-19. The Covid -19 cut our season short because of all the mandates and stopped us from participating in districts and our opportunities to qualify for the State Tournament. Couch Thiessen would like to give a shout out to Chloe Madison for her senior leadership and support and for Hayden Cantrell in dedicating time and effort outside of normal practice to get better. If Couch Thiessen could change anything about the bowling season it would be · getting more students to participate, getting more athletes to come out. This is a great activity to be involved in · Ana Castro said it was a fun to get back together again and bowl as a team . Ana said the greatest moment for her was when she got a turkey and the worst was when she got a lot of gutters. Because of the Covid- 19 we had to wear mask and keep our distance and not high five each other like we used too. the Covid 19 is a big change that Ana wants to change back.

As time goes on , a lot of old trends are coming ~ack to us. Scrunchies, Chunky Shoes, Bell Bottom Jeans, and so much more! But one of my favorite come back trends is Croes! As you look around the school, I'm sure you've seen them on some students and teachers' feet. They come in all colors. There are even some winter crocs with fuzz in them!

Why are Croes making a comeback? Is it because they're cute? Comfortable?

"Croes are just the style again, I like the way they look, and they're comfortable," said junior Jareese Lott-Buzby, starting quarterback who owns his own pair of purple crocs. Lott-Buzby isn't the only person who thinks this way. Ge'neah Moody, a Lincoln High Junior, owns 10 pairs of Croes! All of them might remotely look the same, but the fun vibes they give off are all very different. She has a pair of hot pink Croes, cow print Croes, and tan winter Croes. That was only 3 pairs, so imagine how much fun her other pairs are!

The shoe hasn't always been this popular though. In 2008 investors were dismissing the shoe that would later sell 700 million pairs! Investors were not the only people to dismiss the shoe. Ask your patents what they think of this comeback trend! Katie Ness, my mother, said "I've always thought they were ugly .. .lt's ironic, a lot of trends from when I was a teen are coming back, it's fun to see the kids in old trends."

Another reason Croes are so popular is because they are affordable! As you grow up, your teenage years are when you have more independence and develop your own spending habits. A pair of Croes are perfect for this because they are in style, comfortable, long-lasting, and 35 dollars!

A Lot of famous celebrities have been popping out in these stylish shoes as well! Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and Post Malone all have their own pair! For the overall vote of the [PS district the vote was 60% to Biden, 30% to Trump, and 8% Jo Jorgensen. The LHS vote went to Joe Biden with 76% leaving Trump with 15% and Jo Jorgensen with 8%.

LHS sophomore Ivy Jorges reflects on the experience of watching the results come in live, saying:

·1 knew that I wasn't going to be instant, my parents and the news anchors had been saying not to expect to know the President elect on November 3rd. Even though it took a while, it's important in this country that we make sure every voice is heard and that every vote is counted ."

lndeed, this election was not just historic because it took place during a pandemic, but also because it saw the highest number of voter turnout in the history of the United States. Joe Biden received the most votes for any U.S. president with 78,673,539 votes, or 50.8% of the popular vote and Donald Trump received about 10 million more votes than he received in the popular vote in 2016.

Jorges went on to say that the results demonstrated the recectent which she wishes for the country to set. None of the main lessons to be learned from this election is that our voices count and that we need to turn this country around. Our country faced racism, sexism, fascism, bigotry, and hatred in the face and said "ok" in 2016. Since then, our country has only gotten worse with rising cases in COVI0-19 to growing tension with race relations. In this election our country stood up and said "no more" to the hate that was spreading across America. We initiated the change that we wanted to see and now it's time to actually work for it."

Indeed, it has been one central of the promises of the Bi den-Harris campaign to fight for aqual-opportunities in the U S. as well as combating systemic racism in the justice system Biden's election was also a historic win for diversity as his ticket included Californian Senator Kamala Harris who, as a daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, became the first woman of color, and indeed, the first woman to be elected to the post of Vice President of the United St~tes.

Trump did not react positively to the results of the election, going as far as falsely ciaiming that the results were fraudulent, to the shock of many in the nation.

Upon reflecting on the fesults and lessons from such a historic election, she says, "The takeaway I have gotten from this election is that not t o t ake our voting right for granted and if we see something that needs to be fixed or changed that we have the power to make our voices heard.~

Mr. Heineman had decided to direct the one-act play so after some thought he had decided to do a certain one he had read over the summer so when school started up he had begun Production for the one-act play had started in October 6th. The reason he chose this play specifically was that this one had caught his eye, the story itself was about orphans going through a pandemic and he liked the characters and the plot of t he play as well. This year's one-act play was Lafayette No. 1 which tells the story of street orphans in New Orleans during the 1800s. The plot follows the orphans as they face the yellow fever epidemic, the .orphans as they try to convince real-life person Julien Poydras, a famous businessman from New Orleans. Through conflict and even death, the orphans find a way to survive this epidemic.

The LinksLIVE! program is still filming and going live for a second season while the pandemic going on, but of course they have to follow COVID-19 protocols like wearing masks and maintaining a safe distance from everyone else and other stuff like that in order to make everyone safe and healthy while filming episodes of LinksLIVE! which cam be found on the LHS Advocate website. Before the game and during time outs , Coach Riser did his best to guide and give his team an idea of what they could do to insure that they would win this game. The Varsity girls basketball team has had to make a few changes this season due to Covid-19 such as wearing a mask during the games and practices, but they still had an amazing season. They were not affected by Covid-19 as much as other teams were, only one player had to miss a game due to Covid. Assistant Coach Zenon said .. My favorite thing about the team is how all of the kids are fun to be around." We also asked Zenon what she was most proud of this season, she answered The team showed a lot of resilience, week by week they got better. They have overcome a lot of rough patches, but they always came out better." Zenon said that the thing shE! would miss the most about Seniors l<aysia Woods and team manager Nielly Martinez is their leadership, she is going to miss communicating with them on a daily basis. l<aysia Woods committed to Xavier University and will be playing Women's Basketball for Xavier, she also scored a total of 1,000 points in her 4 years of playing High School Basketball. Nielly Martinez has been a huge help as the team manager, Zenon finds comfort in knowing that the Seniors· are doing something with their life. The girls ended the season with the record of 13-8, and were ranked 8th in the Nebraska Class A Girls Basketball Standings.

"We were thankful to have a season, even if it started three weeks late. Our team was young this year, so we need to ut in off season work for next ear."

What was a big change this year due to the pandemic? -

Coaches were not able to wrestle with the wrestlers, which made it harder to get ready for meets.

How did you guys stay motivated and keep things fun?

We played different games during practices that made things more fun for our wrestlers.

Although the first three weeks of practice were postponed, the swimmers and divers pushed through in order to achieve their personal and team goals. Under the direction of coaches Conradt, Leudtke, and Castro , the members of the team put their best effort on the table day in and day out. Even with the adversity facing them, every swimmer and diver continued to improve and not let the circumstances of a worldwide virus get in the way of their success. With the boys team led by returning state qualifier John Sump , seniors Jacob Lawrence, Garrett Salisbury and freshman Marko l<halimonchuk, and the girls team led by seniors Katie Smith and Grace l<aseman, the opportunities to get better were countless. The swim coaches like to mix things up at every meet, which usually means that what a swimmer swims one meet will not be identical to what they swim in another. This encourages a culture of being well-rounded, pushing everyone to expand what they think they can do and building a culture of positivity.

Coach Conradt likes to keep things interesting at practices, which means that most days he has an inspirational, yet fun quote that motivates the team. Over the years, some of the better quotes have included "Don 't let the game get into yo ur head ; get your head in the game " and "Do you think that George Washington asked for a motor when he crossed the river on Christmas Eve?" These quotes may seem like they are meaningless, but for the team, a good quote from Coach Conradt makes practices much more fun. They also make lasting memories that capture the true happiness that comes with being on the swim team. Coach Conradt makes sure that all swimmers "feel the love" and know that swimming will not only make them better in the pool. but outside as well. Conradt often talks about perseverance and how the hard work in the pool will also build values that are invaluable out of the pool.

Why did you choose basketball?: "Basketball is my favorite because of the competitiveness . I love being able to showcase my skills that I've worked extremely hard on since the day I picked up a basketball."

Most important lesson learned from playing basketball at LHS: "I've learned not to take things for granted . • When our 2020 season was in jeopardy, it really put into perspective how t hings can just change at any point in time. Sophomore Jocelyn Tisdale did not expect to earn a major showcase distinction from the International Thespian Society when her mother signed her up for theater in the sixth grade. In fact, she didn't even expect how much she would come to love performing. "I was like 'I don't wanna do this," Jocelyn recalls. "But then my mom forced me to do it and it was like, 'wait I kind of like singing, wait I'm kind of good at singing.' So I kept singing and acting and doing shows." Jocelyn says she came to enjoy theatre by being part of the community within it. "Theater isn't just about being in the show, it's about finding community and friends, so I've built a bunch of community through theater and all the theaters I've gone to and done shows at." Jocelyn joined the high school theater community as a freshman, where for her first show, she landed a role in the ensemble of Lincoln High's production of Music Man last year . "It was really fun, even being in ensemble-you don't always have to have a good part to have fun but as you get older you get better parts So I'm just making my way up, hopefully." Even with her past experience, Jocelyn described the process of auditioning for school shows as nerve wracking. "It's so scary because you are in this show with everyone and it's such a good time and then you just have to start over and see if you'll get it this time." She had previously auditioned for the One Act Play, Second Samuel, during her freshman year but did not get in."I was so devastated but then you find community and you can do other shows outside." It was in her freshman year when Jocelyn was introduced to Festival and the International Thespian ' s Society Showcase. She went to the Festival and was selected to perform without really knowing what it was about. "Last year, I didn't even know what Showcase was, and then everyone was like, 'You got a callback!' and I was like 'For what?' I didn't even know " The showcase is a statewide event held in Omaha where students participate through their school by performing in individual events in front of judges. After the judges score the performances, they call back those who they want to evaluate again, and they choose the people they like the most from callbacks to be in the showcase. "It's like a whole big audition for Festival." This year, Jocelyn sang "All Falls Down" from Chaplin: The Musical for her individual event and was chosen to participate in the International Thespian convention. Due to the pandemic, it was held over Zoom, however, Jocelyn along with people who got into Showcase, got to go to Omaha for the event. "Last year, it was terrifying but then this year it was fun and like good ole times." Jocelyn enjoyed her experience with showcase, and she says is even applying to be part of the International Thespian Society next year In addition to school theatre and statewide events,

Jocelyn also does community theatre Last year she was part of a production of Frozen in the Lincoln Community Playhouse, as well as participating in the Youth Actors Academy of Lincoln. Next year, she 's hoping to do a show at the Pinewood Bowl Theatre. "I kinda prefer community theatre over school theatre but don't tell Molly Thomas that," she joked. With all of her current participation in and enjoyment of theatre, Jocely'n sees it as a part of her future. "After showcase happened freshman year , I was like 'wait, I kinda want to do this as a career' so I've been really set on trying to do this in college and then try to do performing arts as a career. I know it's risky and all, but I feel like-it just seems like it would be such a fun life to do that." She says she wants to pursue musical theatre at university-perhaps as a double major- and is planning to go to the East Coast, however, she would also like to study abroad."l'm in IB because I want to study Shakespeare in England After I was in Much Ado About Nothing last fall in Lincoln High, I've been liking Shakespeare so I could hopefully do that abroad ." For now , though , she hopes to continue ·growing in high school theatre. "There's going to be musicals for the next two years in spring and I really, really want the leads. Hopefully next year and the year after-that's just me dreaming big though, but, you never know. You could see me in the school performances in the next couple of years when Covid 's over " In fact, Lincoln High is putting on a production of Godspell on Feb. 25, 26 and 27 if you want to watch Jocelyn and the LHS Theatre program performing.

Everyone has a passion, something that they love doing . This may be playing video games, sports, or cooking . For Chris Watson, who is finishing his 12th year teaching at LHS, this hobby is music.

W atson has been playing instruments for many years. He started at age nine when his mom made him take piano lessons, although he wasn't the biggest fan of this. "I started trumpet in 5th grade be cause my dad had a trumpet in our basement," Watson said. He be gan to arrange and compose music in high school.

Fo r college, Watson went to UNLand majored in Music Education. He also said that he was very grateful for his decision to take a se mester to study in Cork, Ireland, where he was immersed in wo rld music and psychology. Throughout his 12 years teaching at LH S he ' s taught a variety of music courses such as Music Te chnology 1 and 2, as well as the orchestra and all of the bands.

Watson said that his passion for music didn't spark until high school. He would listen to music all night long and practice piano for hours on end by his senior year. "Music is what gave me control of my life," he said •

" Music is a huge part of my life, " he said "It's how I meet people, ex press myself, and push myself to grow." Watson believes that music is very important and can impact our lives greatly.

"Music, and art in general , is a wonderful way to give our lives c o ntext and widen our perspective," he said. "Music affirms our be liefs, makes us feel great, and gives us goals in life. I can't think o f a single thing that music doesn't impact in our day-to-day lives."

Be cause Watson sees music as a huge part of his life, he also se es it as a huge part of others' lives. "Music is everywhere at L HS. Students walk around with earbuds in, people sing/rap in the ha lls , and almost everyone in this building used to sing or play an i ns trument."

Mu sic can also be a support system for students, Watson believes, wh ether that's joining one of the ensembles or simply finding out t ha t someone loves the same type of music as you.

Wa tson is currently working on some musical projects of his own. T here are ·a couple of arranging projects, as well as a few original co mpositions he's been working on for the past year. Watson d o esn't only work on projects of his own, as he said " I have a c ou ple of friends that I work closely with and we're also sending ide as back and forth."

With last year's Boy's Soccer team having every aspect to be a state contender, Covid -19 halted and ultimately canceled the whole season. With the season just around the corner, how is the team looking and what are they doing to be prepared and stay safe during this unpredictable season?

Varsity head coach Alex Cerny talked on how much this season could be different, from what has changed in Covid-19 protocols to t he unknown of a season they are are headed into Cerny said "without a doubt [the season] will be different" due to the coronavirus.

"We will have different rules and protocols in place that we will have to follow in order to help keep us safe and prevent the spread of the virus," Cerny said. 11 lnevitably it will also have an impact on competition . Hopefully, we don't have an outbreak here , but odds are it will impact one or multiple of our opponents in some way, shape or form."

LHS sophomore Jackson McNeese expressed that he is looking forward to the season. 11 1 am hopeful for us to be on the same level that we thought that we would be at last year , because we thought we had a really solid team," McNeese said. 11 So I am confident we will be on close to the same level this year."

It's clear from what players and coaches on Lincoln High 's team said, most of them have the same thoughts and views on this season. They are hopeful and feel fortunate enough to get this season and be able to compete once

Ever wondered how the LHS Advocate was first conceiv'ed? Well , you 're about to find out now! It was conceived in January of 1895 as a newspaper for the school but it encountered many different obstacles from the beginning before it was first published two months later in March of 1895 as an 8 page newspaper and it was successful enough to make monthly publications. But then in the fall of 1895 the Advocate was starting to lose attention and they still had a small subscription number. So there were many attempts to bring the attention back have ended in failure. So they saw the outlook for 1897 and it wasn't looking good but things turned around in 1899. Thats when they decided to switch the format and advertising was more accessible but they still encountered many literacy problems . Six years later in 1905 they had 65 dollars in debt but they payed it off 2 years later . After that they kept the old format until June 1916 when they changed the format again It was originally an extracurricular class until January of 1927 when they decided to change it to an elective where you can earn English credit. Many years later , the Advocate is still going strong in the online version while the pandemic limited the use of paper printouts like the Advocate Magazine.

Student Counc i l does a lot to impact at Lincoln High School and the surrounding community during the pandemic. Their support includes projects such as Volunteering : The Lincoln High Student Council staff helps volunteer around the Lincoln community. Some of the organizations that they've have volunteered for or plan on volunteering for during the pandemic are The Friendship Home, Lincoln Literacy , Special Olympics, Loss Run 51<, Center for People in Need, Salvation Army, and the Lincoln City Mission.

Homecoming , and Prom: Homecoming, and Prom are normally organized and set up by the Lincoln High Student Council Staff, but of course, the pandemic canceled the homecoming dance There are also spirit weeks for Homecoming and Prom . They're planned and advertise d by Student Council. In the fall Student Council also organizes themes for each football game but students weren't able to go due to the pandemic.

: Zainab Funnah

Not every LHS student puts together their own award winning photo shoot and non profit, but Zainab Funnah is not your average LHS student. In the Summer of June 2020, Zainab saw an organized photo of Black women on an lnstagram post. She showed her mom and told her how amazing she thought it was. Her mother had a great response and told her she could do the same exact thing to uplift other Black women.

It was around the time the BLM protests were going on and she wanted to make a positive impact within her community. Once she realized she was capable of organizing this, she made a list of girls she wanted to reach out to and found a Black photographer in Lincoln.

She then was interviewed by Cindy Lange-Kubick who works for Lincoln Journal Star. When asking Zainab about the feedback she at from the community she stated "The feedback has been outstanding."

"After it was published in the newspaper I had many people reach out to me about how beautiful what I did was. Many young girls also reached out to me wanting to be involved which pushed me to want to do more," said Funnah.

Along with her photo shoot Zainab also won the Women's Inspire - Founder's Award in September of 2020. The Inspire Award allows people in the community to nominate women that they have been inspired by. She received a glass trophy and a $500 donation from Hudl to further her project.

After winning the Inspire Award, Zainab created her own non profit. Her goal now is to create projects that celebrate Black beauty and culture.

Mr. Bax is an English teacher , as well as a cross-country and track coach, but he is also a beekeeper Bax says he started beekeeping because he had always had an interest in science , but did not see himself being a science teacher. However, his mom was taking a beekeeping course at sec and had some hives in her yard One of her hives had swarmed, which means that it had naturally split in half in order to create a new hive Bax says that he initially did not want to take the swarm, because he was worried about his daughters' safety if they got too close And so, he declined the first swarm, but ended up regretting his answer and informing his parents that he would take the next swarm that formed. The next day, another swarm formed, and Bax set up hive boxes and frames to house his new bees Bax says the fun parts of beekeeping include building the boxes/frames, getting to see the life cycle of the hive, solving problems with the hive, informing people about beekeeping, and harvesting honey and other products from the hives. However, some of the not so fun parts include when a hfve swarms, getting stung on the face or neck, painting the hive equipment to protect against the weather, hives dying for no reason, and pests that disrupt the hive.

The amount of honey Bax produces varies by the amount of hives he has running, as well as on the strength of the hive . He always has at least three hives running, but last year he was able to have ten hives. He says that the amount of honey produced by a single hive can vary from two to twelve gallons annually . The amount of time Bax spends beekeeping varies by the season. The only thing needed to be done in the winter is making sure the hives aren't covered in snow. However, in summer , Bax spends around 4 hours per week checking on the hives The most labor intensive time is harvest season, which Bax says he spends between eight and twelve hours over multiple days extracting, processing, and bottling the· honey. Bax's plan for the future is to continue growing his business, Bax's Bee Barf (logo seen above), as well as continuing it's ability to be self sustaining. He also would be interested in expanding from just honey, to other products, such as lip balms, soaps, and lotions. His final aspiration is to move his product into retail stores, rather than just relying on word of mouth for sales, but Bax says that this is more of a long term goal and not his main focus.

School sports return across the country with new precautions amid pandemic

• Minnesota Hoop Dreams. Basketball stars Paige Bueckers and Chet Holmgren from the Twin Cities make it back- to-back years as the top high school hoops recruits in their high school class. Bueckers, a point guard, was ranked the top women's player in the 2020 class after leading her high school team to 62 straight wins. Even though we are unable to enjoy activities that we have done before Covid, we are still trying to make the most out of this situation.

Robert White ,

Bob White has been a teacher at Lincoln High for 42 years and was at the district office for 1 year. While at Lincoln Hight he taught a variety of subjects. Right now he is in the history department and teaches G0P0 and U.S history. He has also taught English, Phycology and gym. Coach White has been a track - coach for 43 years now. Within those 43 years he has won 8 state titles and 4 runner up titles. His favorite thing about track is working with athletes and seeing their progress, he also loved being involved with the state games committee and running the state track meet. When I a _ sked Coach White what advice he would give to his students he said "be prepared for the real world after you graduate".

Mrs. Avery has been in the Special Education department at Lincoln High for 39 years. Mrs. Avery has taught all level special education classes throughout • ' her years here. Those classes include math, reading, social skills and structured learning. A lot of things have changed aro _ und the building but one this that ·has stayed the same is the location ·of Mrs. Avery's room . The location of her room has not changed in the past 25 years! Mark Larson "I have been an Administrator here at LHS since 2011-12. I have been Principal at LHS since 2015. I love the relationships that I get to build with both staff and students and help people reach their full potential I never set out to become a Principal, but LHS is home and serving this community and the students and staff here is what I'm all about. I've lived in this neighborhood for almost 20 years and believe in what Lincoln High is and what it can be

Ryan Escamilla "I've been working at LHS for 4 years. I enjoy the interaction with the students and staff the most. Being an administrator has allowed me to expand my impact on students by allowing me to work with more individuals than were in my classroom I find joy in seeing my students find who they are and excelling in their goals.

Maria Mendez Rodriguez has been an administrator at LHS for the past 4 years "My favorite thing about being an administrator is building relationships with families and working together to support students I wanted to become =-===~ and administrator to make an impact on my community and in a school where students and I could relate to one another. Lucas Varley "I have been a counselor for 4 years. I was interested in being able to engage students in a more focused manner and enjoy helping people Working at LHS with all of the great staff and students. LHS feels like a second home. It means being an advocate for students and connecting students and families to the resources and supports that they need.

Van Nguyen "This is my 11th year in the Counselor position. I wanted to add a different voice and perspectives to the counseling program to reflect the needs of our diverse student population I think it's important for students to see staff who represent them as that provides hope and encouragement that they can have the same opportunities I love supporting academic as well as social and emotional needs of students and help them process their problems and set goals and action (it's always rewarding helping students reach their potential) Being a counselor means to be a good listener ; a trusted confidant; a caring educator; a compassionate advocate; an impartial liaison or mediator between students, parents, staff, and the community; a broker to supportive services and resources. Most of all, being a counselor means to provide students with the skills needed to be successful in school and in life.

Judy Tuttle "I have been a school counselor at lHS since 2015. After teaching math for 17 years, I wanted to have an impact on students' lives in a different way I thought that perhaps I couW make a difference. I love getting to know students on a personal level and helping them with their problems. Being a counselor means that I am here to support students and help them overcome hurdles Whether those hurdles are academic, social or emotional.

Danielle Pranger "I joined the Lincoln High family in 2013, I worked as a mental health therapist for 7 years before getting hired by Lincoln High. While I enjoyed my role as a therapist, my goal was always to work in a high school setting I enjoy the multiple interactions I get to have with a variety of students each day, supporting them the best way possible. I love build -ing rapport with my students, getting to know them and their stories, letting them know we are in this together For me, being a counselor means making connections and building supports for students and families so they feel confident in their own abilities once they graduate from high school.

Shelley Swartz "I have been a counselor at LHS for a little over a year I like helping young people figure out their next steps after high school as well as manage what is happening in life right now and problem solve I really like how different each day of my job is AND I love it the most when students figure out what success looks like to them and how they can achieve it. Being a counselor to me means being approachable and here to support decisions that students believe are best for them in their life I think it is important to have an open mind and be empathetic to people ' s situations and help them figure out what is best for them

Becky Tegeler" I have been a school counselor for 14 years, the last 8 have been here at LHS. I was a teacher before I became a counselor I realized that I loved helping students find solutions to their problems, plan for life after high school and learn how to become responsible young people. My role in school is to help students advocate for what they need.

Renee McClure " I've been a counselor at LHS since the fall of 2015 I've always been drawn to helping people but didn't ever think of school counseling because I didn't have school counselors who were very involved Be in g a counselor means that I am an advocate for students and families It is , important that we are providing academic , social emotional and career information for all students and extra support when students need it.

I wanted to help make an impact on students and help them get to graduation : Also, try to help get them into college and find a good job after high school.
