It's that time of year again where everyone gets excited. The weather is cold nd windy. The leaves are changing color. It ' s Homecoming! Senior Lillian Bornstein said when asked what being voted as Homecoming Royalty meant to her, "Does it mean that I can subject people to a brutal reign? If not, then I'm not sure " Bornstein won the title of Homecoming Queen at Lincoln High. The dance was at 8:30 P.M. on ctober l 1, 20 l 3 at the South Gym The winning of the football game was just the start of the exciting night. The Links won 31-21 against North Platte. The theme for homecoming was the Roaring ' 20 ' s ; it was inspired by the book called "The Great atsby" The royalty for Homecoming was freshmen : Lady Ana Vazquez Vargas nd Lord Wyatt Vivier; sophomores: Duchess Aracely Acosta and Duke Judd Salem; ·uniors: Princess Ali via Michalski and Prince Wade Michalski ; seniors : Queen Lillian Bornstein and King Fares Afshoon Kar. " It was really cool , knowing that so many eople took the time to go out of their way and vote for me, " Kar said. The music was variance from pop to country to R&B; all of the popular songs on the radio today and ven some classics like the Cupid Shuffle and the Cha-cha Slide. "The music was very riveting. I felt that it really got my blood pumping. I felt the music was a very good selection ." Freshman Jamie Reigert said. The Student Council did a wonderful job sponsoring and setting up for the dance. " Homecoming was a magical night , because you got to see everyone enjoying themselves and just being dressed up in a different wardrobe for a change." Freshman Anna Pape said.

Sitting in the Sheldon Art Gallery along with nineteen other students with a story to tell, freshmen Tin Htay looked out window and thought about her country. For most of the students that attended Quilted Conscience , thinking about what they mis from their country wasn't hard at all. But neither was what they dreamed of happening here. The group met the 16th , 18th and 19th of September at the Sheldon Art Gallery, who volunteered their beautiful building during the process When asked whats thought about the project, Tin Htay said, "I'm really excited Getting to represent my country, it's really cool". The project, sta y Native Nebraskan Director John Sorensen in 2008 means a lot to these students. "The relationships that they built with the quilt were amazing to watch happen. They got very close. The quilters made the students feel proud and good that someone took inter in their culture." -Susan Hertzler, Lincoln High ELL Department Chair. ··1 feel lucky that I get to have that [cultural expo s ure], his is an opportunity for me to share those really important stories and relationships with people outside of Lincoln High Schoo he added. The students wer1: given the chance to do two squares on a larger quilt. One square represented their memories from th 1rst country and the other represented their dreams for this country. Each students' squares, which are still in the process of bei ewed together into one big quilt, are similar but unique all at the same time. They each tell a different story . All of them bei rom Thailand, it was easy to connect and understand each other. "I met and made friends with people I would have never kno "f I didn't go to it{Quilted Conscience}." -Tin Htay. Her memory was of her life when she lived in Thailand. Quilted Conscien ives people a way to notice different cultures that are sometimes forgotten. Everyone has their own beautiful life. Hertzler sai i 'Leaming is the beauty of it, it's a two way street." Quilted Conscience gave these students what they deserved to feel; proud.

Beard

Imagine talking to a large group of influential figures in the Lincoln community about your school. That is what Landon Beard did when he addressed the Lincoln Rotary Club this year to receive the Community Service Award. "I talked to them about how Lincoln High gives back to the community, how awesome it is, and how we have kids who are willing to do lots of things to help." Beard said. He will attend the University of Nebraska Lincoln, and he will major in communications and minor in theatre. " Communications," he said, '"looked like a really broad major that encompasses very flexible occupations. One of the occupations is an actor, and I thought 'That's for me!"' Beard performed Anne and Emmett at the Haymarket Theatre in which he played Emmett Till. "I think it is so cool that you can be whoever you want at Lincoln High. Here you can do anything, and people will accept you."

The Lincoln High Business Department hosts a job fair every year so students can get jobs and companies can find new employees. There are a lot of businesses that come like Runza, McDonalds, Toys R Us, Dairy Queen, etc. They all look for new employees so that they aren't short on workers when they need help. The Lincoln High Links are always happy to find something they like to do.

The Links never miss the chance to get a job that they always wanted and they tend to never miss a single job fair. Some of the students who already work at one of the jobs, they help the students understand what they will be working at and for how long. The Lincoln High administrators are surprised at how many students go and apply for the jobs that are there. They are also very happy to see all of the students taking the initiative in getting jobs.

English Languages Learners

Engli sh Language Learner (ELL) classes are for students who are learning Engli sh in addition to their native languages. For many. English is a third or fouth language.

Lincoln High has a high number of ELL students There are many student~ fr om different place like Mexico, Korea, Vietnam, Africa, Myanmar, etc. There are a lot of students from different countries here at Lincoln High that speak many different languages

There are a variety of levels like level 1-2 and 3-4. ELL is to help students speak English to take classes that are required. The ELL teachers are Lindy Anderson who teaches level 2-3, 2-1 and l-4, Sarai Douglas who teaches level 3-2 and 4, ELL Department Chair Susan Hertzler who teaches level 4 and 3-1. Sharon Kreim er who teaches level 1- 1 1-2 and 1-4, Elizabeth Okereke who teaches level 3- 1 1-2 and 1-3, and Ashley Siedhoff who teaches le\el 1-1 and 2-2.

Students from different countries are required to take ELL so they can learn En gli sh fo r their classes. Some of the ELL students have to work to support their families. So ELL is very important, because they need an education to help their fa mili es and to help them get a good job in the future

Lincoln High's Student Child Learning Cen ter was t he very first student/child center in Lincoln, and has been g oin g strong since 1993. The Student Child Learning Center pro v ides a well -staffed environment for the care of babies and chi ldren of LHS st udents wanting to contiue their education. To con tinue en• rollment in S/ CLC, student-parents must be maintaining grades and have keep consistent attendence. Raising a child in h igh schoo l is definitely a challenge, but Lincoln High is putting i ts best fopt forward to provide childcare so students can fi ni

school and recieve parenting help.

Many LHS students have gone from novice cooks to prepared-for-college chefs in the kitchens here at Lincoln High. Lincoln High offer s many different types of FCS courses, including Cullinary Foundation s, Food s Nutrion and Wellness, as well as sewing classes and course s on parenting and childcare. In courses such as Cullinary Foundations, students can become SafeServ certified and will learn about different culinary centers , along with learning ba sics of professional food preparion. Proper cutting techniques , following recipe s, and correct measuring are just a few skill s learned in Foods and Wellness.

Health and P.E. classes are great classes for students to learn and also interact with one another. Having all the classes we have for fitness really give students a chance to get exercise during the day. Lincoln High offers a variety of classes that you can take. Which include Advanced Weight Training, Weight Training, Lifetime Sports , Team Sports , Health, Low Impact Aerobics, Fitness For Life, Beginning Swimming, Lifeguard Training, Outdoor Adventures Dancel 01, and Strength Cond./Aerobics. Some of the classes have tried expanding their equipment as well this year "Weight training is trying to do more with new equipment and got new jump ropes , jump boxes, all kinds of stuff to try to really get the Advanced Weight Program going." said P.E. Teacher Amy Car iotto A class that is very unique and different is Outdoor Adventures. Cariotto's favorite class to teach is Outdoo r Adventures . "If s different and it gives kids the opportunity to activities they probably haven't done before in P E and it puts everyone on the same playing field. So, you've got your star athletes and your kids who hate to be active and they both can succeed in the class. What kind of classes are there in Skilled Technical Sciences? Department Chair Stan Haas says,"There is civil engineering architecture, machine tool technology, and we also have beginning and advanced welding. The advanced welding is a college class you can take at Southeast Community College. Also, woodworking and automotive classes dealing with the engines.''

What are you working on now? "The welding program is welding up the frames to the platforms for in the weight room. ln the past we have welded some benches that are outside to sit on. In woodworking classes the students all get to make their own little side table. In the graphics class the students are on computers most of the time drafting out a design that is given to them. Or the more advanced graphics students can make their own design and then graph it out."

Junior Ronald Niemoth is in this class because he likes being able to take an idea and draw it. Then being able to sketch it out and make it real and into a 3-D dimension. "I am considering welding [for a career] right now. He enjoys getting and idea and then going and making it.

Whether it's a scavenger hunt for clues about the Theorum or just working together in a group to solve complex problems, Math teachers want you to succeed to realize that what you learn you will use in a variety of ways - from jobs to college and even in fun. This year, allenged and pushed students to improve their scores on the state standards test (the NeSA), and their hard work S's scores were some of the best in the district. If you want a good, solid foundation in mathematics to take education or the outside world, Lincoln High is the place to get it.

There are a lot of fun activities that happen during school. To make many of these things happen, we have Student Council to plan them. For instance StuCo planned Homecoming and Prom , they raised money for Make a Wish, brought back Hoops for Hope this year and raised $1,000, they put together Bands Against Bullying, and made Valentines Day cards for the Special Ed Department

This year was also the first year they did a Ping Pong Tournament, and it was very successful. "I was extrememly proud of how our Ping Pong Tournament went. It was the first time we did that, and it was a great success. We raised a lot of money able to fund 3 months of treatment for a kid in Ethiopia who has Autism," President Andy Ngo said.

StuCo helps with a lot of the cool things at Lincoln High . This year Student Council really stepped up and got a lot of things done "There were more projects that we planned, and we started taking things to the next level and trying to change the culture of the school as a whole," Ngo said. The President is Senior Andy Ngo, Vice President is Junior Anie Bista, and the Secretary is Sophomore Caleb Martin. The Sponsor is Nikki Barnes

The first issue of Lincoln High's schoo l newspaper, The Advocate, rolled off the presses in 1894, making it one of the oldest continuously published school newspapers in the country.

Secret meetings were held during 5th period every day in the northeast corner of the school. Top secret agents work hard to unmask the hidden gems within the High and expose them for the world to see. The staff, though small in number, brainstorm ideas, shout out questions, and work together to produce a total of 5 print issues this year along with a continously updated web page, Facebook and Twitter pages.

"When I started I actually had no intention of bowling," senior bowler Caleb Thiessen said. "My brother had his first tournament in Hastings, and I went to watch him. I said, man maybe I should bowl. So I filled out the paper work and that next week I was bowling with him on the varsity team.

It was kind of a rough start because we were trying to figure out what our line ups should be. Once we figured that out we got going pretty good. We started getting some pretty good matches in there but our best match was against North Star. They were one of the top teams contending for a state title and we only lost by a couple of points . .We started to gel together and have fun. Then districts came around and I bowled out of mind. It was really fun and it was the best I had bowled all season which lead me to state after winning districts. At state it was pretty tough but everybody was having difficulties. For my first time of competitive bowling I did not do as bad as I thought I would. I'm glad I did better than some people thought I could do."

"Our young team has a bright future with the guidance of the older players," said Anthony Evans a multi-sport tenth grader who plays reserve basketball for the Links. This season for our Varsity Boy's Basketball has had its ups and downs especially in practice. they've been a little inconsistent. Frank Cuddy, an eleventh grader and starter for the varsity team, has been injured twice with a dislocated shoulder and may have torn his labrum. He had a surgery and was told that he wouldn't be able to play basketball for the rest of the season. but with all the times that he visited the trainer· s office, he was able to play for the rest of the season with his shoulder bandaged. "Our goal for the season is to win sixteen or more games, hold other teams at a 30% shooting rate, and shoot 45% for ourselves." Said Cuddy. So far that goal is in process and the boys are putting in as much effort and dedication. A team that only has weaknesses doesn't find it's strengths and a team that only has strengths always stumbles when facing its weaknesses. Jayden Jilg-Brown a junior and varsity captain said, "Our weakness could be when things aren't going our way we tend to hang our heads a lot. we put our heads down and bring each other down." Teams that gets caught playing a one on one game always has a messed up defense plan. a team is suppose to come together and play like a team even when things get harder. just like the varsity boys basketball when they played Lincoln orth Star in the HAC Tournament on January 17th. The boys started out with a bad game plan defense and ended up strong but still lost only by two point. a game they could've lost by less than 64 and N01th star won with 66. "As a captain, I expect my teammates to come ready to practice, ready to play games. It all starts with effort," said also one of the varsity captains Jason Towery. On January 25th. the Lincoln High boys played a very battling and fully upsetting game against Omaha Northwest. The Lincoln High boys lost 59 to 69. a game that got the audience off of their feet. referees yelled at, and varsity coach, Dan oble, extremely upset to the point where he cancelled practice for two day in a row. The Omaha orthwest game was suppose to be won by the Links, but somehow that chance was snatched out of their hands after playing recklessly in the 4th quarter. After the Lincoln high crowd stood with anger and walked out with their heads shaking. The varsity basketball boys manageably beat Bryan High School, 63 to 48 in the Cage Classical on January 30th. On February 21st, the varsity boys played a very fast paced game that led them to a win against Columbus High School 69-55. This was their last home game. which left the crowd wanting more and also the last high school basketball season for seniors. Guan Wuol, Race Schuurmans. Jordan Sorge, and Austin Phipps. The team's season record was 1014, although not making it to states this year. the boys gave it all their best and hoping for a great season next year.

"For the past two years, I didn't take more than a week off," junior swimmer Carissa Wei said of her training schedule. That dedication paid off , because Wei was the first female swimmer to make it to state in six years. Wei is also a member of the varsity tennis team.

Senior Nadia Khechfe got third in diving at state with 427.35 points. Khechfe has signed a letter of intent to swim for KU in the fall. In addition to diving, Khechfe also plays golf and varsity soccer.

LHS sent a total of seven swimmers and two divers to state this year: Juniors Blake Costello, Wade Michalski, Carissa Wei, and John Frey; sophomores Charlie Gallentine, Sander Sieglaff, and Jesse Harvey. Divers included senior Nadia Khechfe and freshman Payton Prall.

Junior Blake Costello prepared all season, but he poured on extra effort the two weeks before. "If you are going to be a good swimmer , you have to train all the time," Costello said.

Junior Wade Michalski was a novice swimmer at the beginning of the season, but he improved enough to qualify for state by the end in the 200 medley relay.

"It was a great season," coach Richard Conradt said. "The swimmers and divers worked hard to achieve their best. They really came together as a team and believed in themselves."

Anne & Emmett is an imaginary conversation between Anne Frank and Emmett Till , both victims of racial intolerance and hatred Frank is the 13-year-old Jewish

In Memory, Anne recounts hiding in a cramped attic with her family after German dictator Adolf Hitler ordered the Nazi military to round up Jews and put them in concentration camps en route to gas chambers. Anne died of typhus at ~~=- the Bergen-Belsen Nazi girl whose diary provided a gripping perspective of the Holocaust. Till is the 14-year old African-American boy whose brutal murder in Mississippi sparked the American Civil Rights Movement.

The one-act play opens with the two teenagers meeting in Memory, a place that isolates them from the cruelty they experienced during their lifetime.

The beyond-the-grave encounter draws the startling similarities between the two youths' harrowing experiences and the atrocities against their respective races.
