flt the opening of the 1936 gridiron season Jackson apparently was headed for one of the weakest teams in several years, having only five returning lettermen and a new coach, Merritt Robson. Out of this inexperienced material Coach Robson built a championship team which surpassed any previous Jackson record---a team which combined a scintillating ground attack from single wing and half-punt with a sparkling aerial display featuring long or short passes with single or double laterals. In short, it was a team which had everything-speed, power, alertness and baffling formations which bewildered the most formidable foes. This Red and White eleven got under way with a slow start by defeating Lincoln Reserves 6-0. On October 2 the Cardinals officially inaugurated the real season by taking a jaunt to Falls City where they blanked Jug Brown's Southeast Nebraska Champs 7-0. The next encounter was with the hapless College Viewites, who were ground under 38-0. After romping over Cathedral 54-0 the Cards careened past Latta·s Beatrice Orangemen 33-0, smashing their state titular hopes into fragmentary bits. On October 30 the Jackson eleven ripped, passed, and rammed its way to a victory over the Bethany Maroons by a score of 25-0. Next in the parade was Crete whom Jackson defeated the second consecutive time in twelve years, the score being 24-0. In the next fracas, despite the fact that the Cardinals were outweighed twelve pounds per man, they completely outclassed

and outmanauvered the Gautschmen from York 31-0. In the final oame of the season with the traditional foe from the Shoptown, the Robsonites fou :1d their stiffest foe of the year. Rt the mid-point in the contest the Cards were leading 12-0, and at the end of the game they had added another marker to bring the total to 18, while Havelock was scoring nothing. During the entire season Havelock was the only team to penetrate Jackson territory within twenty yards of the promised land. The 1936 season was the greatest both defensively and offensively ever to be known to the wearers of the Red and White. It was a remarkable record in which the Cards ecored 236 points to their opponents 0-a record as impressive as any in the state. Due to this spectacular performance Jackson followers unanimously agreed that the 1936 gridiron machine was the greatest ever produc at Jackson High School.

For the past three years Jackson High School has built super basketball teams and the 1937 aggregahon proved to be no exception to this precedent. This year the satin suited Jackson aces established a record which won them state-wide fame in prep basketball circles. The regular season was in itself very nearly as outstanding as any in the history of the Red and White being surpassed by only the 1936 schedule .

This year Coach Robson had four lettermen returning, three from last years state-runnerup live . With this material he built a team which was strong deferisively and which clicked with deadly precision on offense. This is proved by the fact that throughout the twenty four game schedule the Cordinals averaged 32 points per game to their opponents 17. These great basketeers got away to a fast start by defeating a veteran alumni team, coasting over the Shoptown live, and swamping Cathedral. In the next game the Columbus Discoverers discovered that Jackson had a much superior team to the tune ol 37-20. Following this College View , and York became lour and five respectively. At mid-season the Cards frolicked over Fremont , "lucked" (as the papers say) their way past Bethany, belittled Beatrice, had a warm argument with Crete, smashed College View , and squeezed past Lincoln High . Yipeell Hitting the home stretch of the season the Robsonites met their first defeat after winning 14 straight. Alter felling Falls City and walloping Bethany (what! no luck?) the Red and White dipped its colors to a small, clever, speedy, and deceptive Hastings live by the score of 29-25. Stung by the defeat the night before Jackson pulled a fourth quarter spurt to steamroller Havelock 40-29. The next game which was the finale of the great 1937 season was with the crack Omaha South Quint . Alter jumping into an early but narrow lead the Cardinals thrilled a local • crowd of 1500 by defeating the Cornie Colhris proteges 21-19 and wound up the regular season with 16 victories and one defeat .

After breezing through the Regional Tourney by defeating Seward, Havelock, and Lincoln , the Cards for the second consecutive year entered the State Tournament as pre-tourney favorites . Omaha South , who was defeated earlier in the season by the Jacksonites, also was favored to reach the finals . In the first round Jackson drew Kearney High whom they polished off in short order 34-21. The second round also proved to be easy and Plainview became the victim 44-24 with Jackson's second five bearing the brunt of the attack. Hastings High loomed up as the next lore in the semi-Ima) round of the tourney. Th is time, however, the Cards were out for revenge and revenge they obtained in a game which had everythmg including sparkling team and individual play both offensively and defensively. After 32 mmutes of intensive action Jackson finally emerged the Vtctor 29-25 . Omelia South had likewise been succe~sful and so in accoraance with the pre-tourney dope Jackson and South were to meet in the final game of the tournament In this final contest the teams were well matched , the colorful Omaha five against the veteran Jackson quint. In the first quarter the Cardinals took the lead which they held at the half time and did not relinquish u11hl tn1d-way in the third quarter. Here the South Packeu lived up to their name and proceeded to pack away Jackson hopes by jumping into the lead which they kept until the final gun . Wtth that final futile "pop" the score stood South 26 and Jackson 22. Despite this defeat the Cardinals had set a record in sportsmanship ca well winning 22 out of 24 games and being state runnerup. So ended a remarkable season which may be summed up m one word " ternhc !"

Through the dint cit " Bus" Knight's stellar performance Jackson captured a sixth place in the Hastings Inv1ta• honal and secured a ninth place in the annual State meet. The concluding meet of the season proved to be disastrous for it was then that Jackson relinquished to Havelock th~ first C. L. L. track htle in three years . The 1937 fac~son track ssiuad was well rounded m number, but wed\. 1n numerous places. In fact Jackson·s strength lay almost• :vrholly in the field and not the track. This cinder squad paced by Foster , Cut• shall and Gunn in the das ; Neihart and Hildreth m the distances ; Knight, Geo ge and Jim Owen in the hurdles ; Smith in the high jump; Allen and Smith m the broad jump; Owen , Foster and Bowmaster m the pole vault · Knight and Ruyle in the weights , and Fitz, Thompson and Anderson in the javelin .

At the opening of the 1937 track season Coach Merntt Robson was lacing a formidable nine meet season with a distinct scarcity of talented performers In fact he had only six veterans returning to uphold the Cardinal laurels in the field and on the track With only one workout under their belts , the Jaclc• son cinder artists opened the season in a dual meet with College View whom they defeated 62·60. Alter de· feating College. View the Robsonites journeyed to the York Invitational held at York. Here the Cardinals placed fourth and returned to the home stamping grounds to stamp out Bethany 89 1·2 to 36 1·2. At the Missouri , Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas meet the Cards tracked down another fourth place, but were passed over by Lincoln the lollowin_g week in the third dual meet of the season. In the South East Nebraska meet held at Beatrice the Jacltsonites hurdled their way into
