The Student Council is, as the name implies, the student governing body of Jack on High chool. It plans the pep rallies and many of the year's activities in addition to acting on such student business as may be delegated to it by the faculty. BAND The Band is a new organization at Jackson. Its main function is playing at pep rallies, basketball games and the regional and state basketball tourn~ments. Their services were invaluable in helping to keep up the Jackson pep reputation at the two tournaments.

ORCHESTRA Any pupil from the seventh to the twelfth grades is eligible for membership in the Jackson orchestra. The orchestra performs at such school affairs as require its services. From its membership is selected the string quartet, which this year entered the District ~Iusic Contest. Faith Medlar, a former member, was rated superior in flute in the State Contest. Although good football is not a trad,t10na1 at Jackson high a good basketball, the 1935 football season wa the most impressive in the history of the school, and won for Jack on an enduring name in prep sport circle . Starting with seventeen returning lettermen, Coach Ralph Beechner soon molded a championship eleven, which made its debut at Falls City. The formidable foe from the Southea t failed to regi ter a point, but the Cardinal al o went corele s. Thi tie later appeared a the only mar on Jackon' unblemi hed record. In the next conte t, however, inclement weather conditions hampered Jackson' fleet back , and the Red and White gridder barely e caped with a 7-6 decision from an in pired band of Lincoln Reserve . The previous week's humiliation served as a potent timulu to J ackson's men of the gridiron, who ruthlessly battled Crete' Redbird into a 26-0 defeat, giving the Red and White their first victory in twelve years over a Crete eleven. Wymore, attempting to stem the Cardinal tide, succumbed 39-0, and the Beechner gridder~ continued toward a gloriou climax by smothering York under a 40-0 avalanche. In the final game of the season a determined crew of Havelock E ngineers fought desperately for every inch, and held the stunned Ca rdinal in check for the fir t half. But, when play was resumed in the third quarter, the courageous Gately eleven snapped, and the powerful Red gridders drove hard to a 25-0 sea on's climax. When the gun sounded, ending the game, J ackson rang down the curtain on a en ational four- tar final. Aggres ive. Undaunted! Re ourceful! Undefeated!

If Jackson High's 1935 football ea on be ted all other record in the chool' hi tory, enthusia tic ba ketball fan had but to wait patiently for a few month to proclaim the 1936 ba ketball eason as the pinnacle of athletic achievement at Jack on high. ever before had any Red and White athletic team built up such an impre ive record as that di played by the Jack on five at the completion of the 1936 ba ketball ea on. The Cardinal caravan started off in it fir t victory at Falls ity, gained impetu through fifteen ucce ive win , pau ed briefly for qualification in the regional conte t , and rolled on to the end of the trail in the final of the tate tournament, where the fir t and only lo of the ea on co t the Red and White a tate champion hip title. In pite of thi defeat, however, Jack on till remained in po e ion of the mo t en ational record among all ebra ka high chool ba ketball team of 1936.

A narrow one-point victory over Falls City, a closely fought engagement with Bethany, a methodical victory at Fremont, and a hard-earned four-pomt advantage over Beatrice left Jackson undefeated in the mid-season stretch. Then came a victory over Hastings, then another "tooth and nail" battle with Bethany, ending with Jackson on top, and finally the climax of the regular eason with a 28-14 win from Lincoln. The two latter games respectively gave Jackson undisputed claim to the Greater Lincoln crown and the City Championship. One week after Lincoln, Jackson opened the regional tournament by breezing past Teachers. Havelock, considered by the players themselves as the stiffest opposition in the tournament, was forced to give in, and Jackson won in the last quarter-24-16. In the finals, Lincoln met her second defeat, by a ten-point margin, at the hands of a Red and White team which now became the regional champions. With twenty victories in a many games, Jackson had produced convincing evidence of her ability to survive in the state tournament. Curtis Aggies, the initial opponents, rapidly gave way before the Red and White's bewildering attack-47-24. Fremont's basketeers attempted to break the Cardinal win streak in the second game, but were unsuccessful. Then Jackson, as the underdog, faced the formidable Omaha South five. Both teams battled evenly for three quarters, when Jackson surged ahead with a lead they refused to relinquish. In the final game, Jackson against Creighton Prep, odd were even, and only Lady Luck could pick the winner. From the opening whistle the lead alternated continuously until the last three minutes. Then Creighton Prep secured a three-point lead, Jack on reduced it to two-then ten second left-then five, and then-the gun, with Creighton Prep ahead 24-22, and the State hampionship title to their credit. An uncanny inability to hit the hoop proved Jack on' downfall, and although the defeat wa a costly one, di heartened Jack on rooters had no occa ion to hang their heads, for no other team in the state could boa t of o phenomenal a record as the Jack on team had ju t completed.

. TRACK . Jackson's sixth con ecutive Greater Lincoln League title was acquired by the track team in the annual G. L. L. track meet in the Lincoln stadium. In addition to this meet Jack on participated in the Doane Relays, the Peru Relays, the York Invitational, Wesleyan Invitational, the Havelock meet, and the College iew meet. Headed by Knight in the weights and hurdles, Harrington in the broad jump, Robert and Pitcaithley in the da hes, Panzer and Briggs in the distances, and Smith in the high jump, the track team was consider.: . d the most wellbalanced aggregation in Jackson cinder history. Sixteen men received letters.

TENNIS This year's tcnni team completed a representative schedule again t Omaha and Lincoln teams with two victories, one defeat, and one tie. The double combination of Elbert ouder and Bayard Taylor j who last year won the tate Doubles Championship, gained the final thi year but were defeated for the title by Lincoln' formidable double team. Crete. The students r eturned to the s~eepbarn for another of those corn-removing nuxers. APRIL 3-Four students place at district music contest. APRIL 3-4-Hi- Y G. R. joint conference. APRIL 17- Another of those mixers. They've improved so much you might be able to call them dances. APRIL 18-The York Invitational track meet. Knight t hrows the javelin 177' 10" to best his own state record. APRIL 21- G. R. City-wide supper. APRIL 24-State commercial contest is held. Jackson's shorthand team places second. They came h ome short -handed but not empty handed. Jackson track team goes to Doane relays. Every contestant brings home a medal. One that he won, Oswald. MAY 1-Jackson wins second in Wesleyan's Invitational. Four of our musicians place in the state m usic contest.

The Red and White team made only nine out of forty-nine shots. They dipp~d the ball in and out too many times to count. It should have been Jackson's game, but it wasn't. Neither was the state championship. MARCH 20-The "J" Club sponsored Jackson's first basketball banquet. Something new and successful. After the meal (dates weren't tolerated at the dinner) everyone hopped down to the gym for Jackson's first dance, a mixer. If anyone ever wanted to learn some new steps he should have been there. The floor seemed bumpy or was it my partner's toes ? MARCH 27-"Tons of Money", the play of course, is given as the annual "dram" production. MARCH 28-District commercial contest is held at
