Students share why they wanted to be in advanced math

> > Math, often perceived as one of the trickiest subjects in high school, received a favorable review from a select few.

Students had a path through math classes as dictated by college and district requirements, but some who . enjoyed math chose to take more challenging courses than what their grade required.

Lena Lankas (11) was enrolled in AP Calculus D. "I enjoy the challenge that math gives me and the problem solving that goes into each unit is what I enjoyed the most," said Lankas. In addition, ''I'm not sure exactly where my future career will take me , but know that having excellent math skills will only benefit me."

Juniors and seniors were not the only students who were found taking AP Calculus D. Nixon Hanna (9)

was taught the ropes of math by his father ever since he was young. Hanna said, "My dad explained • to me how to solve difficult math problems when I was very young, so it has always been an easier subject for me."

Hanna tested out of all of the courses before AP Calculus D. "I want to be some type of engineer, so having knowledge of math will definitely benefit me with my future path."

Math played an important role in many challenging career paths, including many different forms of engineering. ., ..

These students participated in these challenging courses to better themselves in their mathematic and cri tical thinking skills. With the help of the math department, they will be prepared for what comes next.

Crunch time. Mr. Joey Plaster explains the worksheet for the day before students go to work with partners. One of the students, Kylie Hansen (10), says she enjoys math. Hansen said, "I kinda • want to be a teacher so I mean that's a subject you could teach," which is motivating her in math.

Campbell said, "I am a person that enjoys math, [I] always have even if it's difficult... I like being able to look at numbers in different ways and knowing what to do."

grades ranging from Business 101 to Wealth Building and Financial Management. All the classes have one thing in common: they shared how business works, whether it was an overview of the process as a whole, or an in-depth explanation of a specific part

Students were not limited to how they wanted to explore the wonders of the business world. Addie Weiand (12) said "My sophomore year I took Business 101, junior year I took Take Charge, and now in my senior year I'm taking Marketing, Economics in Business, and Information Technology." There was a class to fit the interests of everyone.

Weiand went on to say "I iearned that I love business and so I decided to continue building my business skills! I believe that the classes have helped me decide if I want to go into the business field of work because in Business 101 you get a nice overview of all the main types of business specialties there are, and when you take specific business classes like Marketing, it helps you figure out what your strong suites are, and helps guide you on where you can improve."

The business classes each had special and unique projects that were interactive, and helped students see firsthand the behind-the-scenes realities of how businesses worked. Ava Dohmen (11) said "I like doing projects [in economics class]. They are fun! Usually we look at different businesses and how they are structured, and we have a competition between them and see how that [business] works when it comes to supplying in the market."

"I am taking World of Business and Marketing. I decided to take those classes because I've been really ·interested in getting a job in the business field. We have done a couple projects so far that look at different jobs in different fields, and as of now, I am interested in real estate or sports marketing." said. Kendal Hasemann ( 10)

Ready! Set! Supply! Here Mr. Brian Kabourek (bottom photo) and Mr. Jeff Campbell (top photo) are teaching an Economics clas~. These classes gave students hands-on work that shored how supply and demand works not only in United States but all around the world. Ava Dahmen (11) said "I really like economics, and it is kind of a fun subject, and I like learning about how the market works." The supply and demand chain was one of the main topics that teachers used to get students interested in the economy.

> > The year 2020 was a bold and insane entry into the new decade. From Covid-19, the death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter to the wildfires across the globe, the year not only affected the beginning of the decade, but it went on the record as one of the most memorable years yet.

Colin Harris ( 11) said "The pandemic has been the most impactful and crazy thing that has happened. I don't think anything positive has come out of it. If I could remove anything from 2020 it would definitely be that. We've lost a lot of lives because of it and I wish we could bring things back to normal."

Abryana Hallgren ( 10) had a similar view in that she thought the pandemic was a horrific event, but she did share how she believed it changed the world for the better. Hallgren said " I think 2020 will open a lot of peoples' eyes and help everyone realize and appreciate what our lives were like before. I think we've all learned to work together, trying to social distance, wear masks, and help ourselves and others to be healthy and safe.

I think throughout 2020, I've gained more responsibility and independence."

Ben Gauthier (12) shared how we thought 2020 changed the world, but he had a little different view. Gauthier said "I think there will be more civil movements happening and a lot of people will be less scared to want to fight for their rights which is a big positive thing that happened in the midst of this negative time. I think personally, I've gained a lot more confidence throughout 2020, I haven't been afraid to say what I want to say."

2020 will go down in history, not only for the unfortunate events but also for the positive outcomes. Even though students and their families experienced trials and tribulations throughout the year, some people felt personal growth. The year exposed how blessed -many people were, and students found a new appreciation for their past. The populus was reminded to always be grateful for what they had, because they never knew what tomorrow was going to bring.

World Wide Perspective

> > Being enrolled in a foreign language became a high school rite of passage. Whether students took the more obvious languages such as French and Spanish or branched out towards the more uncommon ones like German and Chinese, learning a second language helped students in a variety of ways. By taking a foreign language at school, students were able to gain new skills and make connections. Tyler Ruff ( 11) thought about his future when he decided to take four years of Spanish. "It's important for college and graduating, so that's why I took it," he said.

Annika Bostrom ( 11 ), on the other hand, had more personal reasons for studying a foreign language. Bostrom said "My aunt is actually from Colombia, and I thought it would be cool to learn Spanish so I could communicate with her better."

While most students decided to stick with Spanish or French, Miko Lenz (12) explained how an accident led her to discover her passion for German. Lenz said "I originally wanted to take Latin at my old school. When I transferred, I was accidentally put into German, and I actually really

liked it, so I stayed in it."

Lenz also mentioned how her teacher incorporated fun activities into lessons, which made the class more interesting. "We play a lot of Quizlet Live, which I think is fun I think having a fun way to learn really helps me in the class."

A world language class was the perfect environment to make connections and meet new peopJe. Aaron Le (12) made many new friends since he chose to study French. Le said "I have some friends I've only met through French class, and I still talk to them even though I don't have classes with them any more. Because of the way Madame Maupin teaches, we are basically forced to interact with each other."

No matter which language students chose to learn, all the world language courses were filled with people who had unique perspectives about the class. Each class was also a gateway towards meeting new people and getting a head start on future opportunities.

Language ,is the gateway to the world! Depicted is Keely Yager (10) and Ashley Bredthauer (10) focused on working hard at their Spanish activity in Sra. Julia Miller's Spanish 3 class. "I enjoy the subject a lot and it makes it more fun to learn when you have a great teacher and friends to help you out," said Yager. "I expect to use Spanish in the future to help me get into a good university."

Let's learn a language! TA Hollan Griesch (12) worked hard during her Spanish period to get her work done. She had already taken Spanish but wanted to do more. "It's really fun to be a TA for Sra. Miller's Spanish class because Spanish is such a fun class and Sra. Miller is such a fun teacher to work with."

C'est la vie en 2020! Madame Lisa Maupin's French 3 class used new technology to learn the popular language. Maupin used Flipgrid as a way to compensate for the new challenges of the 3/2 in person and zoom schedules. Ola Kadhim (9) explained "On Zoom, it's pretty easy to learn. You just have to do your activities most of the time and do the real work in class."

One student, Alexandra Konnerth (10), presented in front of the computer so the online students could see. Konnerth explained her thoughts on Zoom and its affect on her German class. "I already know German so I really like taking the class. I like Zoom days more though, because I can be more comfortable at home!"

> > High school was all about making friends, joining clubs, and making amazing memories. In jazz band students got the chance to do that and so much more throughout their high school years.

Lily Harms (12), a talented senior, had been playing the piano for fourteen years. When asked what her all time favorite instrument was, she chose the piano. But she also knew how to play the flute, violin, organ, handbells, hand chimes and the guitar. Harms received an award in one of her many past performances for an "Exemplary Solo." Harms said, " Jazz band is this amazing, fun, once in a lifetime thing. After I graduate I won't be able to play with these people again, in this setting all together. Being involved, and doing this while you can, it's a fun time."

Harms went on to say "You get to create all sorts of music with so many talented individuals."

As far as Lilly's future goes, she was considering going to University of Nebraska, Kansas University, or the Berkeley College of Music. Although college takes up a large portion of time, Harms definitely planned on having music in her future life as a college student. One of Harms' favorite things about jazz band was the fact that she got to be surrounded by such an amazing group of hardworking and talented musicians. Harms was grateful that she got to perform and pla y all different types of music with people she enjoyed spending time with. Harms said "We are like one big musical family."

Jazz band was an awesome opportunity to learn how to play unique instruments and meet all sorts of people · . It was nt just a club or school activity , it was a beautiful part of many different peoples' lives.

Music has influenced most students in one way or another. Over this hard year and months of quarantine, many students picked up old instruments or even decided to try something new.

Terryn Samuel ( 11) attended guitar lessons until he was forced to stop this spring due to Covid-19. Although norm~l life and routine came to a pause, his passion f~r music did not.

Samuel was prompted to take guitar class at East. He said "A normal class period will start by tuning our guitars. Then we play the chords, chord progressions, and eventually we get to playing ongs. My favorite assignment has been playing a song we learned in front of the class. I played 'Broken' by Lund."

Motivation to learn the guitar inspired Samuel to invest time into learning songs other than what he was taught in class.

Samuels said, "This class has definitely helped spark my interest in playing guitar more, it is a great way for me to clear my head."

Samuels was not the only student who took advantage of this class. Alyssa Wanna (12) also took • the opportunity to learn the guitar throu g h school, although this was not the first i nstrument she learned to play.

Wanna had never heard of a class like this before attending East. "I would recommend this class to anyone who would like to learn the guitar inexpensively. The school lets you borrow a guitar if you do not have one and they let you take it home for Zoom class. Aside from that, it's an engaging class that keeps you awake."

In conclusion, guitar class was a unique opportunity for students to be able to pick up a new instrument and see if a new hobby awaited them.

Sonya Temores (12) shown practicing new chords in her guitar class. 'We start every week with guitarists of the week and learn about the types/backgrounds of all the greats. After that, we tune our guitars so we can begin practicing chords. Usually after we've learned a handful of chords, we learn to perform a song to our peers. After a few weeks, with the help of Ms. Shively, we meet one on one to do a proficiency test where we are tested over knowing and playing the chords smoothly and correctly. Over all, it's a fun and easy-going environment" she said. Guitar can be a fun and useful class if you're looking for a new skill to learn!

> > The English department was known for the abstract and intriguing literature that was studied in depth by st~dents. Curriculum shifted frequently, but had a major overhaul before the school year began. This change involved a swap of the classic book "Of Mice and Men" written by John Steinbeck to "Bone Gap" by Laura Ruby, among other changes.

J ordyn Zehr (12) said, "What motivated this change in literature was the involvement of harsh and inappropriate descriptions of women throughout the novel." Zehr went on to say "Bone Gap involved a different outlook on perspective that was more fitting for the tenth grade audience This book focuses on different perspectives in which the world views people and how the characters in the story overcame challenging obstacles."

diffe rently-abled individuals. This language no longer found it had a home in a world that cried out for equality, and certainly had no place ~in tenth grade English classes. "These inappropriate messages that were being portrayed were not something that the English department wanted to be a part of their curriculum." said Zehr.

Zehr continued to say " This change impacted the English curriculum by changing the message being portrayed through the stories included in ·the lesson plans. This district-wide, long overdue decision was prompted by worldwide discrimination that was brought to light throughout the year.

With so much happening with racial discrepancies, the English department wanted to seek a change. The change that was brought was in the hope that students would still be challenged academically, but would be able to read and annotate literature that was more enlightening and less demeaning.

Students in Mrs. Helen Cooper's English 10 class had to make sure they prepared for their Socratic Seminar. The book, "Bone Gap," was added this year. Bray said, "I think it was appropriate for a tenth grade audience."

Analysis and discussion

Students gather in a Socratic Seminar to talk about the new book. After finishing the book students got together to share their thoughts. Karsyn Dice (10) said "[The Socratic Seminar] was like the three essential questions of the book that we had to type paragraphs about and we were just supposed to give our feedback about it."

• Physics was not just math and equations. Projectile trajectory labs never failed to add a little fun to the routine, math-based science. Students Harley Paprocki ( 11) and ancy Tran ( 11) were both students looking into the STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) career field. They decided to take AP physics 1 to help them determine if physics would be a potential fit for a career path.

But of course, favorite memorie of both Paprocki and Tran were their favorite labs. Paprocki said, "My favorite memory in physics is the marble trajectory lab. We basically had to adjust the angle and velocity of the launch to predict how far the marble would travel. It took my group two attempts. During the first, our marble hit the bottom of the pan. On the second try we made it in, so you could say we started from the bottom and now we're here."

Easton Martinez (11) also opted to take AP physics 1. Instead of taking the class to try out physics, Martinez simply stated, "My brother took it and said it was pretty hard. I thought I might as well take it, too, just for the challenge."

Martinez's opinion on his favorite physics class memory contrasted with Paprocki. Instead of the marble trajectory lab, Easton favored the Nerf bow lab. "Yeah I really liked doing the Nerf bow lab because we were able to go ou tsi de during class. Mr. Thompson always knows how to keep us entertained. I also think it's very helpful when we can visualize what we are learning."

Even though the students took AP Physics 1 for different reasons, and enjoyed different aspects of the class, the one thing all three students agreed upon was that Mr. Kyle Thompson wa an engaging and fun teacher.

Computer Science students explain what the class involves, and why it is so crucial in our world today .

> > As one of the fastest growing occupational fields in the United States and an evermore common job requirement, Computer Science (CS) has become an integral part of school and society.

Students and staff observed this trend in a variety of ways. Computer Science especially made its most influential footprint upon the school through the Computer Science Department. This department ~ffered students a unique selection of classes that taught them how computers work, robotics, how to code and more.

McKellan Clarke (12) "Throughout my time at East, I have been so amazed by, and proud of, the growth of the Computer Science Department. It has quickly developed into, in my opinion, one of the best of its kind in the entire state. Our teachers are very qualified and supportive, and the Computer Science clubs here are flourishing."

This success was evident through the Department's test scores, and extracurricular promotions. Boasting some of the highest AP score trends in the state, East CS had set the standard for Nebraska Computer Science programs.

On top of curriculum, the extracurricular programs that the Computer Science department promoted and participated in provided students with many special opportunities. For the past three years the department had taken students to coding competitions called "Hackathons." There, students competed against other schools and teams to create the most innovative and exciting program. In addition to "Hackathons," both the EHS Computer s 'cience club, and East Computer Science Honor Society offered students opportunities to learn and apply additional Computer Science knowledge.

"If you know how to code and you know how to build, that's the closest thing you'll get to a super power," Grady Arndt (12).

FCS students describe the classes' unique activites

>> Students that were involved in Family Consumer Science courses learned a multitude of things about what it means to take care of a "real life " child. Students in Ms. Anne Daly's Infants and Toddlers class were assigned a "Real Care Baby" to take home and care for over one night. The goal of this assignment was to gain the understanding of what it takes to be a parent in just one night. Sophie Widman (12) said, "Understanding all that goes into caring for a baby is nothing short of overwhelming. However I enjoyed learning about what it takes to calm a baby down when they are upset." Widman went on to say, "Ms. Daly does a wonderful job in explaining the process of pregnancy and parenting and how the body handles these drastic changes."

Elise Benson (12) was also in the class Infants and Toddlers. Some activities that she looked forward to were taking home and caring for an egg with the focus being that the egg did not break. Like the real care baby, the premise of this assignment was for students to have full responsibility for something and having it be by their side throughout the week.

Ashlynn Kasik (9) works on an online de ign project in Interior Design class . Interior Design students have to find colors that work well together and design all sorts of rooms to match many scenarios. "We were working on color wheel and designing rooms with the color wheel ," said Kasik of the project she was working on.

Benson went on to explain what made her want to be involved in the class. She said "Ms . Daly was such a great example to have had in our class because she does a wonderful job explaining exactly what to do in each of the activities that we did. She was so invested in our class and I think that was the reason so many students were succ~~sful this year."

In addition, another FCS class that was offerep was Interior Design. Addison Harley (9) was enrolled in an interior design course and she mentioned some unique curriculum activities that she experienced which were: creating floor plans and getting different samples of materials to piece together. Harley chose this class because of her passion for intenor design and decorating. "Ms. Wach did a great job in keeping us busy with introducing multiple projects at a time." All the FCS classes that students took were fun and interactive courses that forced students to see what adult life was like , and how they would handle difficult but real situations.

What's cooking? Kayma Carpenter (10) works to serve up a delicious dish in her Food Prep class. In Food Prep students can learn valuable lessons preparing meals. "I learned skills in cooking and plating food" said Carpenter of the class.

ITE students explain how the depart~ent has built their high school experience.

Contrary to popular belief, Industrial Technology classes at East are more than just following building instructions, they were rather a fun and exciting way for students to express their creativity. Taylon Haecker ( 12) took at least one Industrial Technology (ITE) class every he'd been enrolled at East. From basic Intro to Engineering Design 1 to Advanced Engineering and Architecture Design, Haecker learned how to create, design and utilize numerous skills and projects throughout his ITE experience.

Haecker said, · "My teachers make the classes fun. Also the freedom to do what you want makes it really enjoyable."

The freedom to do what you wanted? What did this look like in an Industrial Technology setting? For Haecker it came in the form of designing a house for his Advanced Engineering and Architecture Design class. This design process was the class' culminating project, requiring each student to use all of their creative and technical skills. To make the project even more special Haecker and his classmates would submit their designs into the Home Builders Association's annual home design contest.

For Haecker , this use of what he learned and the chance to apply creative liberties made the class his favorite.

For other students, such as Jaden Miller (11 ), the appreciation for the skills he learned made ITE courses his favorite. "It's very beneficial to take the class seriously and work hard on your project everyday. You'll really learn a lot and the hard work will be worth it," said Miller.

After seeing his older brother take multiple ITE classes, Milier was inspired to try the courses for himself. The schoolwork became somewhat of a hobby for Miller who enjoyed taking his work home during remote learning. "We made a river table at home~ and it has been my favorite project so far."

These perspectives of enjoyment seem to be universal, and the aspect of creating and learning valuable skills allowed Industrial Technology to be a popular department at East since the school's opening in 1967. This trend will most likely continue as the ITE department continues to provide exciting classes where students can express themselves and discover new useful trades.

Student Council has a sibling assignments every year. "In years past it was a bigger event, but due to COVID and sponsor changes it looked a little different this year" said Drew Huscher. Everyone who was able to met at President Cambry Waddells' house and had a sibling reveal, followed by a scavenger hunt around Lincoln. >> An extensive amount of planning went on behind the scenes in 2020 of which many students were not aware. Student Council helped bring the student bod y and East community together despite challenges faced with Covid-19 restrictions.

Similar to most classes, Student Council was unable to operate in the same fashion as previous years. "This year has been nothing like I imagined my senior year on council would be like. Most of our events, and even our pep rally have been forced to shift virtually," said Kaci Shaw (12). "Working with and around covid regulations has been nothing short of a challenge."

"We do a lot of logistical work that nobod y knows about. We make a lot of posters and banners, too, that get hung up in the hallwa ys. Working with the admin and the staff here at East can be a lot of fun especially when it comes to planning a big event," said Vice President Isabella Villanueva (12)

"We have a lot of fun planning things like spirit week and this year's virtual pep rally. We also partnered with the Lincoln Blood Bank to donate blood from November twentieth to December fourth."

Both Shaw and Villanueva agreed that the most critical part of planning events for East was including ever yone and getting as much participation from the student body as possible. "It is very cool to see students come together in these hard times."

"That's really what high school is all about, being together and making friends that will last a lifetime, not to sound cheesy," replied Shaw.

The posters and banners students saw on the walls didn ' t appear out of thin air, similarly to many opportunities and activities throughout the year. Student Council truly did their best to provide as many amazmg moments for the student body as possible.

> > While the standing joke was that people that love to argue make the best debaters , that was only a tiny subsection of the skills these talented individuals showcased. These students became some of the faste t speakers and thinkers in the school, able to call out weak arguments and strengthen their argument with facts, tatistics, emotion and credibility.

While in-person competitions were the norm prior, online competitions took hold for this season. Virtual competitions came with their own difficulties.

Zoran Curgu (11) said, "I think the ethos, pathos and logos we usually build in the round will be a little weird and it might not sound as fluid or strong." He

It's fun because we have the same topic all year and get to explore it in-depth In Policy, you can run a lot of theory and philosophy, which makes for fun arguments critiquing our world."

Clarissa Tan (11 ), on the other hand, saw the problem in a more optimistic light. Travel expenses can be severe for the debaters , so "The thing about being online: it's more accessible for people who don't want to pay as much for away tournaments."

In a time when everyone was learning to "go with the flow," perhap no one wa better suited for the changes than our highl y-skilled, quick-thinking debate team.

> > With the wide range. of activities offered at East, it might seem difficult to pick just one, but for students interested in improving their public speaking skills , the speech team was a great option. Even though it wa s intense work, students continued to join because of the welcoming atmosphere and challenge it gave them.

Rachel Laws (10) explained. " I chose speech because I am very interested in the types of performances we do and it's a really fun team with an awesome environment."

She was not the only one who gushed about the team. Ceci Eubanks (12) explained, " I went to a speech meeting and I discovered that some of the speech upperclassmen were more fun and inviting , which made the activity feel more desirable than the other ones. I was just there to have and fun and meet

people at first, and ultimately speech was really good for that."

Devon Beechley ( 11) had a very personal reason for joining the speech team. "I was a very insecure kid and I didn't think much of myself compared with my other friends who were succeeding left and right. So when my teacher recommended me for speech I was terrified I was quaking, but after I was done, I've just been more comfortable in my own skin than I have ever been."

The speech team had everything from friendly teammates to opportunities to ~mprove speaking skills, to helping students find a boost in confidence.

Words can change the world. Mckellan Clarke (12) looked at the sign up sheet for the first speech tournament during a Monday meeting with the team. Clarke signed up to perform his event Humorous Interpretation in the Bellevue West tournament. "My supportive teammates and fellow participants as well as the excitement of tournaments helped me discover a niche that I enjoyed."

For the love of journalism . Julia Ehlers (12), the editor-in-chief of the Oracle, listens to the teacher's instructions for the day. Everyone on the Oracle staff joined for different reasons, but Ehlers said one of her reasons was for her love of journalism. In her second year of being on the staff, Ehlers added , " It's also turned into a way for me to write about what I'm passionate about, not to persuade people of anything, but to bring awareness to things people might not know about. Journalism brings light to all the corners where people may not be able to see, and I get to be a part of that through the Oracle!" •

He said, "I choose to join the Oracle because I'm thinking of a career in journalism It's my dream to be a foreign correspondent for a major news network and travel the world. So, learning the basics is important to me It also lets me see a bit of what my life could be "

Write on time. Camden Cohn (12) checks his chromebook to respond to a survey to check in on how far he is on his third story of the year Cohn was the sports editor of the Oracle this year, which he said has presented some challenges . "Since I am one of the four editors on the staff, the biggest [challenge] just being time management. The editors and myself need to look over other students' articles and make sure that they are ready to publish all while writing our own stories as well," said Cohn.

> > The Lincoln East ·Oracle was the inside scoop to student life in a newspaper form-- sort of. In the time of unknowns, the printed edition moved to an online-only publication. It got the community in on what happened around the school. The Oracle was planned out and separated into different groups in order to get the planning down to a tee, to be able to cover each topic. Feature Editor Isabella Villanueva (12) said "The main goal of the Oracle this year is to get students in East wanting to read the current news. We wanted to have a wide range of topics that we covered in the newspaper to make all students interested."

The Oracle's main message of this past year was getting students to WANT to read the stories that each team worked so tirelessly to create. Madalynn Abele (12) said "Throughout the difficult times, we wanted to let the East student body have a voice 2 2 1

even throughout our situation."

Mrs. Emily Geldmeier, the Oracle's new adviser, wanted students to be exposed to all different types of article forms and styles to ~gain insight on how to write a successful news article.

Abele also said that she wanted to be in the yearbook because she wanted to gain knowledge on how to write an interesting news article, in the hopes that she would major in journalism in college.

Cady Blacksock (10) another member on the Oracle staff said, "I ·enjoyed learning how to create different stories as well as interacting with the other people."

The Oracle was an outlet for students to express the views and feelings of high school students. It provided informative, and creative stories that the students were eager to read.

"I would say my costume frqm Polar Bears last year. It was a black m as k, and I had a super long cape with stars on it. This year, my favorite costume is a cream turtle neck sweater, dark blue pencil skirt, and a pocket watch," Rose Jorgensen ( 11 ).

"For me, it wasn't so much a costume as it was a person. I got to play Oscar Wilde in Writers Runaround which was a lot of fun," Rhett Bothwell (12).

"I love theatre because it's a really cool way to express yourself that you wouldn't be able to do normally," Kaylee Adamson (12).

"I kind of grew up with theatre. I'm glad we have Mrs. Walburn as our director. She's really amazing, and makes sure to include everyone. And the people are really great," Rose Jorgensen (11 ).

"Theatre is home for me. It's somewhere I can go to forget or be with others. It's amazing to meet new people," Rhett Bothwell (12).

Tennis players share their trials and triumphs from this last season.

>>Players prepare for their next big hit, as they feel the winning point approaching. The tennis team this had an extremely successful season, as they walked off the court of their final meet as State Runner Up Champions. But even with the success in hand, there · was a lingering reminder of all the blood, sweat and tears that it took to reach that point.

Kyle Givens ( 11) shared how he worked through the challenges he faced throughout the season when he said "The hardest thing is probably the mental side of it. It's hard to make a mistake and then just put that point behind you. It's so easy to dwell on things, especially during big points like match point or set point. Those points really matter but you have to play it like they ' re any other point in the match. Those big moments are really hard to calm down. That's why I think it's important to stay mentally strong."

The players knew that all the time they spent improving and bettering their game was not just for the four years of high school, but for life. Kaiden Bradley ( 11) said "I see myself playing tennis in the future as a leisure activity. I would probably play with one of my teammates, (potentially) Kumo, who was my doubles partner this year."

The tennis team learned that hard work rewards you in an array of ways. The boys walked away with a State Runner Up Trophy, a strong mental game that would come in handy in and out of the tennis court, and lastly, a sport that they could enjoy playing for the rest of their lives.

Whiston said "This picture was from a doubles match I played at Woods with Kaiden Bradley. It was our first match of the year we played with each other I believe the score of that match was 8-1 in under forty minutes." Jacob and Kaiden worked together to accomplish a goal, and they more than succeeded.

Anxious but cqmposed, Hudson Scherer (12) readies into position for his next move. Scherer said "I remember being pretty nervous because that was some of our toughest competition I had played all season During this picture I was really focused The match was really close so there was no margin for error. I ended up squeaking out a win with the final score of 9-7." This match up tested Scherer's ability- t o perform under pressure, and he passed with flying colors.

The Apollonaires roll with the punches as they prepare for their season. > > The Apollonaires were known for their fantastic dancing abilities but with everything that went on, the team had to adjust to a variety of new things.

Their biggest obstacle was the uncertainty they faced. Tierny Blankenhorn ( 11) mentioned some of the problems. "Summer is usually a time for us to practice technique and get to know each other as a team, so we didn't get that this year, unfortunately. We still don't exactly know how it'll look but it's been announced that there will be virtual competitions this year so we'd send videos instead of traveling to competitions."

The reality of virtual competitions could've been a blessing or a curse according to Blankenhorn, who said (11). "If we send in a video we could retake it as many times as we need for it to look perfect, however, competitions are a really fun experience."

Since they stayed safe, they didn't have as much time to _get acquainted with their teammates, the Naires still found ways to get closer. Lena Lankas said ( 11) "We usually have squad nights which are ~ super fun, but this year we haven't been able to do any of that but we found workarounds such as having fun in practice, snapchatting each other and we try to make the most of everything we do together."

Lankas mentioned now their team bonding looked . different. "We aren't able to do as many squad nights and activities outside of school such as little parties which is what we usually do but we've still been trying to hang out one on one and stay safe."

Despite the challenges, all the N aires exclaimed how excited they were to have a season and hoped to compete at Nationals. With the precautions they took and the effort they put into their plans, they had a bright future ahead of them.

Dance your heart out. The East Apollonaires perform before the varsity football game. The team was able to perform at all home games for their parents in the stands. Alex Puls (12) explained the different feel of the stands. "Performing in front of only parents this year was definitely a very different game day experience. We missed the energy and support fro m the student section, however we were very grateful to be able to perform at all. Dancing on Seacrest is an experience that I'll remember for the rest of my life!"

Spartans on top! Emily Wiles (11) cheers loud and proud at a varsity football game. This year, the fan section was limited to just family, and created a different atmosphere, but the cheer squad would not let it get them down. ''There was definite disappointment, but with that disappointment came a perseverance to enjoy what we could, while we could. The season undoubtedly made us all take stock of the blessings that did come our way like having a student section at the Omaha games!" explained Wiles.

Pretty in pink. The varsity squad cheers with pink pompoms for Breast Cancer Awareness month. While the 2020 season was unlike anything ever seen before, the girls found ways to enjoy their time together. Cally Dorff (12) said "Cheer this year was really different due to Covid, but it didn't make it any less special. Despite all the chaos, we were still able to do some (Covid-safe) in person practices, which I was really grateful for! Although Covid affected the normalcy of games, practices, etc., it did not change the memorable bonds made with my other teammates throughout the year."

Cross Country runners share the highs and lows from their season

> > The finish line is in sight, as the girls Cross Country team pushes through the last leg of their race. The team had a long list of achievements from this last season, and at the top of that list was a third consecutive State Championship title. The team worked as one, to encourage everyone to give it their absolute all until the last meet was over.

As the team practiced throughout the season, they all bonded and became more than friends, or teammates, they became a community. Berlyn Schutz (11) said "My favorite part about cross country is the girls on the team, we are basically a big family, and overall it's a great experience to be around them."

When it was all said and done, the girls had more than just new friends, and a state title, they had life lessons that they would remember forever. Ella Laessig (12) said "One big thing that I've taken away over the last four years is how to push myself further when I don't think I can. Cross country emphasizes pushing yourself to your limit and overcoming obstacles that are put in your path It has also taught me the importance of teamwork and how even in a sport that is largely individual, being a team is still such an important factor."

Laessig's fellow teammate, Jenna Muma (12) agreed. ''I've learned that it is never too late to succeed. You should never give up because if you keep on working good things are sure to come your way."

In conclusion, the girls Cross Country team was a bunch of strong, and fierce women who had their eyes on the prize. Their success was not just because of a selfish desire to please ones' self, but instead to please their teammates. They showed what real moments of teamwork look like, and the outcomes that it can bring.

As the runners catch their breath after a rough, but successful race they all sat together to chat about the highs and lows of the meet. Eva Gronewald (11) said " This is right after a meet, and I had just (accomplished) a P.R and it was a really nice day and a lot of us did really good at this meet. Here we were justcooling down after our race." After the meets, the girls team found it important to share stories from the day and to continue to build up the team in preparation for the next meet.

Feelings of accomplishment, and excitement are running high as the girls cross team celebrate their big success. Izzy Apel (10) said "That picture was taken the moment we found out that we had won state. It was such a surreal and special moment for every single one of us. I remember looking up at the coaches, alternates and parents and they were all holding number ones and smiling." This was a very special moment for the runners because they knew all their hard work finally paid off.

Finding motivation and keeping up her pace, Emily Dohmen (12) pushes through the end of the race straight to the finish line. Dohmen said "I guess at the moment I felt like I was _ struggling a little bit, but overall I was excited to almost be done and complete the race." Going home, Dohmen felt proud of what she had accomplished that day and was confident she would do even better in the next race.

> > "I can. I will." This saying has been the mantra of the cross country team for years. The group idea that potential and determination can produce positive results has led the team to success year after year. But what made cross country so different? Zach Smith (12) said , "Our group determination makes us different, I think other sports focus on individual success where we focus on team success."

This idea was echoed by Ben Roof (10), "We ' re always competing again t each other , but we ' re also working together and cheering each other " on.

The community and togethernes hailed b y athletes such as Smith and Roof, obviously has been influential in the team ' s success. For three consecutive years the boys team made it to state , and were projected to continue climbing state rankings. Senior Smith elaborated on the team's future when he said ' 'I'm looking forward to seeing the boys progress in their running. We have a really young team that ' s impro ving a lot , and I am enthusiastic to see how we improve this next season. "

Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads. Evan Keim (10), ran off the beaten path to try and claim a victory for East.

The faster you run, the quicker you get done. Ben Morgan (11), raced to the finish line to get a well needed drink of water and celebrate his successful race.

Pitch perfect. Varsity pitcher Jordan Bussey (10) pitches the ball. This season the team focused on good mindsets, an aspect the team thought really helped. "You have to have a really positive mindset because you're not going to do well [without it]. I try to stay really optimistic no matter who we're playing, and you have to go in with intensity and the desire to win," said Bussey.

All about that base. second baseman Karsyn Broekemeier (11) runs to throw the ball to get a, runner out. Broekemeier said this year "we had to overcome a bunch of challenges. [We had to] work more as a· team to follow the restrictions and procedures."

Nyhoff said Covid-19 made t his season especially difficult because "we cou ld o nly see each other at practice with no team bondings, along with having to practice with our masks on and just really getting • used to having that on while doing activities was very different."

>> Multi-sport athlete Zoie Armstrong (12) had a curveball thrown at her last season when she tore her meniscus and ACL. Fortunately, that did not put a damper on the 2020-21 softball season. Rather the opposite. "I feel a lot stronger this year because of all the rehab that I had to go through to recover," Armstrong said. "The team was all extremely close this year and that only aided our success and motivated me to push harder." In a game against Lincoln Southwest, Armstrong hit a grand slam allowing them victory. "Taking things slow and focusing on making this season the best it could possibly be" was what motivated Armstrong to push for her recovery and not give up. Armstrong planned to continue her softball career, as she had multiple offers from colleges that she looked forward to pursuing. This amazing comeback goes to show that when a challenge appeared, hard work and dedication was what got Arm trong out of the injury phase and back to being better than ever.

Golfers share how they competed individually out on the course with the hope to benefit the team.

> > Hearts race as golfers closely watch their teammate 's golf ball roll towards the hole. The girls golf team had a tremendous season, as they broke school records, and pushed for their much deserved invitation to the state meet. While the girls strove for su ccess, they all had to work individually in their hearts and minds as they dealt with the difficulties that golf brings as it was a heavily individual sport.

Kaitlyn Dumler (11) compared the unique aspects of golf to other activities when she said "Golf is an individual sport more than other sports. In other sports, you have a team you work together to ach ieve a goal. Whereas in golf, you play your own game and get your own score, that score then contributes to the team's score as a whole. It is similar to other sports because , on the other hand, you are on a team and you can help your teammates improve."

Even though golf brought its challenges concerning individualism versus a team mindset, Dumler also shared that the players still had a community that mattered to them. She said "You also still have a bond with your teammates ... "

Erne Troy (10) agreed with Dumler when she said "I had never played golf before but some of the coaches convinced me to join before the season started and the group of girls were so supportive!"

At the end of the day, the girls found ways to put their personal desires aside, because they kne w that individual success did not matter if they did not work their hardest for the team. When the girls felt joy inside as they watched their teammates succeed, they were reminded that their team mattered. When they worked together as one, that was when real success was possible.

Van Horn described the significance of her hat in the photo when she said "It's one of my lucky hats. I got it on vacation a few years ago I've worn it to almost every tournament I have played in." Van Horn used technique and a little bit of luck in hopes of sinking the putt.

Hailey Bayne (9) thinks through her next shot, as she takes a few practice swings. She said "This shot was with my sand wedge. I was chipping the ball onto the green. Even though I didn't end up doing very well that day, nothing is better than a day on the golf course." Even though Bayne's score was not her best that day, she still was thankful that she got the opportunity to play golf on a beautiful day.

"My goal would be able to play for Varsity again next year. I only got to suit up, but playing with them would be great. I just need to put more hours in the weight room and practice."

> > Athletes strive for greatness in all act1v1t1es, but football is, arguably, the · spor.t on which there is the most pressure for success. Underclassmen must prove they are capable of competing at the higher levels to get noticed.

Kellen Gorr ( 11 ), a first year player, and a star kicker had his first year on the football team. He started on the JV team and swung up to Varsity for the majority of the season. What was the story behind this talented athlete? Gorr had a bright future ahead of him, he had dreams of playing for Northwestern after he graduated high school. Gorr said "In second grade I had a friend, and we were messing around in his yard playing football. I ended up kicking one, and he said that I should be a kicker. And last year I found out we were gonna lose our kicker so I went and tried out and got on varsity."

Kellen's goals were to train, improve his skills, make more friends on the team and go to some kicking camps, so he had a better chance of getting into a college of his choice in the future . The young men needed to be talented, hardworking, able to take criticism, and of course needed to be able to have some fun.

Covid-19 took a lot from students, including getting . the chance to support our fellow Spartans on the field. The players were not able to have a loud, supportive student section to help cheer them on to victory. "It felt like we were only playing for our parents and not our friends. But it's still a good time, it's still the sport we love," said Gorr.

Football was an interesting and competitive sport, Gorr loved the fact that he got to practice every day, knowing he was going to put in the work to make himself more successful in the sport, in life and for his fellow teammates.

To be prepared for a game, everyone needed to get in the zone and be prepared. Before every game, Gorr participated in a special tradition; getting the Caniac with extra toast from Raising Canes. Gorr's favorite memory from football was after he and the rest of the team won in North Platte in the playoffs Gorr and the rest of the team went back into the locker room and started banging on the locker, his ears continued to ring for hours.

All of our star football players worked very hard all year, and every year to guarantee a great season.

The freshman and reserve girls show how it gets done

>> Bump! Set! Spike! These words could be heard time and time again throughout volleyball practices this past fall. Repetition after repetition, lesson after lesson, drill after drill. The East freshman and reserve volleyball teams dro ve themselves to perfection each and every practice. These efforts resulted in a wildly successful season for both teams, and a commendable performance through their COVID-19 ridden experience. The freshman team went on to win the city championship, and reserve surged ahead with a winning season.

What allowed these teams to be so successful? Katie Pickering ( 10) said it comes down to teamwork, "It's not just one person working and leading the team. Everyone has to do their part. It's a team effort every play."

Adding to this idea of teamwork, Avery Juedes (9) said, "It's a really big communication sport. Communication runs every part of every play."

This attention to detail, communal effort and teamwork obviously paid off.

But volleyball_ was not all about winning, it was also about valuable life lessons from coaches and fun relationships with teammates. "My coach was a reall y good help and reference. She taught -me some good life lessons on top of volleyball. She taught me to always work hard and respect m y teachers ," said Emma Engelman (9) further adding , " It's super fun to be with your teammates. And after you get to a point it just gives you energy and you have fun with each other."

The teams ' hard w9rk an? community showed them the value of volleyball and how special it was to be a part of the moments that were bigger than just the players as individuals. An invaluable lesson learned was work hard and never give up . Alone things may be difficult, but with a team anything is possible.

SPIKE! Tailyn Jay, 10, leapt into the air to spike down the ball. The gym was filled with nervous energy watching it all unfold before their eyes. Ultimately Jay was able to pull off the game determining point, and the reserve team won the match.

SET! Katie Pickering (10), went in to set up her teammate, Sophia Weed, (10) Because the set was well executed, Weed performed a crushing spike This is Sophia Weed's first year playing for East.

"We limited our contact with each other, so it was harder to do certain things, but we did our best to make it all work." Avery Juedes (9)//Freshman.

"We all had to wear masks and it was hard to get to know each other But we were still able to get closer." Emma Engelman (9)//Reserve.

"It was definitely scary, there was a chance our season. could've been canceled." Sophia Weed (10)//Reserve.

• Team work makes the dream work. The freshman volley ball team proved this saying to be true after they successfully won their game.

"The most fun thing that happened was winning City. We ha d playecl our final team three times before City, and we beat them for the first time at City." Avery Juedes (9)//Freshman.

"The City Championship. Everyone was super hyped; it was a lot of fun. It was our last game, so it was even better." Emma Engelman (9)//Reserve.

"We beat Pius. That was a big accomplishment for East. We had a lot of fun this season, especially with the virus, we made sure to have fun the entire time.'' Katie Pickering (IO)//Reserve.

Court is in session. Lexie Nicolarsen, (10), got ready to return the starting serve to the opposing team. The Reserve team played an impressive match, and went on to win the game against Northeast.

"At the beginning of practice, all the teams warm up together and figure out ball control and then we split up and do our own things." Avery Juedes (9)//Freshman.

"We're all very competitive, it's a good environment among teammates, but when e go up against a team we're very competitive." Sophia Weed (10)//Re rve.

a dynamic team with a ·great bond

> > The varsity team had a rocky start to the season, with a two week quarantine after a player tested positive for Covid-19. Even with the cancellation of multiple games, the team was still able to make a return to their •regular season.

Once the season finally got started, the women gave it their all. Brooke Peltz ( 12), captain of the volleyball team said that "The team dynamic was unlike any other year, with all of us girls being extremely close it definitely set us up early for success."

"The girls on the team all got along extremely well and that communication and trust was key to a successful season." Megan Waters (9) agreed with Peltz.

The players also made the transition of having a new coach. Even with the feeling of newness the girls still felt as if their coach guided well through the difficulties of the year. Peltz shared "The most exciting memory I had from the season was having Ms. Nicole Gingery as our new coach."

With the challenges that the year had as a whole produced, what kept Peltz playing was "Volleyball is my escape from reality and a way to dial into what I enjoy the most."

You've been served. Brooklyn Fuchs (10) serves the ball at the pink out game. This season was better than previous seasons because "we had a new coach, Ms. Gingery, and we had a _very senior-heavy team. Having these two things was great to re-establish East volleyball and to have our name freshly restarted. We really needed these components, and these leaders to help us come together and win multiple games," said Fuchs.

Hustle, hit, and never quit. Sam Olson (10), Reese Boyd (9), and Nicole Haywood (10) prepare to hit an incoming ball. The volleyball teams had to quarantine at the beginning of the season because of exposure to a positive Covid-19 case. Olson said, "This put us behind because we had to miss some games and lost practice time that we needed. This setback made all of us realize how important it is for us to have a season and so when we got back in the gym we worked ten times harder in order to be at the level we wanted to be."

Can ·you dig it? Varsity volleyball players Brooklyn Fuchs (10), Delaney Novy (12), Aaliyah Bradford (9), Annalee Ventling-Brown (12) and Haley Sprackling (12) work together to get the ball back over the net. "My personal goal every time I go onto the court would have to be play this game as if its your last. I mean I think, as an athlete, you never know when it's your last game. So I think going on to the court every time, my mindset is always play as if this ball is the last ball that you are ever going to be able to touch," said Novy .

Block it. Kamryn Snyder (11), Kaylee Denker (10) and Nicole Haywood (10) jump up to block • an incoming ball. Snyder said "I'm making sure I'm being consistent. I'm not making a bunch of silly mistakes or errors, and also that I communicate well with my setter and with other players, and just making sure I am doing my part to make sure our team is successful."

Shooting for success. Forward Aliza Becker (10) pauses at the freethrow line to try to .shoot a basket. Becker said "Before a game I am thinking about having cohfidence and energy on th~ court. It is helpful to run through the plays in my head and think about what I would do in certain situations.

basketball team played during unprecedented times and managed to form a bond as a team.

> >The girls basketball team did not have the roar of the crowd behind them , but they still had their teammates cheering them on just as loudly as the y ran down the court. The girls were in for an uncertain season but they made the best of it and managed to end their time together with a great bond.

Haylee Harrington (9) said she preferred basketball over other sports because she liked the experience of being on a team. She said "I've been playing it for a while because I really like the team aspect. When one of us makes a mistake we tell them what to improve on instead of y elling at them, and we're respectful."

On the other hand, Hannah N y hoff (10) tried out for the team because she wanted something to do in the winter but she found more than a pastime: she found friends Nyhoff said "I started pl ay ing because I wanted to do a sport in the winter but the girls are really hard working and the y 're fun. We always talk about random things or we play Craz y Eights on the bus rides. "

Savannah Koch (9) agreed that the basketball games were fun , she said game days were her favorite memories. Koch said "Game days are really fun, before each game we all huddle up and talk, and it's always my favorite part."

By joining the basketball team, the girls not only had an awesome season but they also formed close bonds with everyone on the team. In the words of Brookelyn Rasmussen, (9) "Basketball is the best sport and more people should try out." The team enjoyed their time playing together, and were glad they decided to take the risk and try out for the team.

Defend until the end. Susie Bovaird (10) pivots to keep the ball away from the opponent. Bovaird said "This season is different because there're less people on each team _ so more players have to step up." Which attributed to her favorite part of the season "so far [it] is just playing with different people than last year."

Teamwork makes the dream work. Hadley Bailey(9) and Brookelyn Rasmussen(9) work together to get the ball back from the other team. Rasmussen said that when she is preparing for a game "I just try to think about what my goal is for the day. Whether that is to score, to handle the ball, or to make good passes, I usually try to focus on all of those things."

Preparing For Takeoff. Mason Gaines, (9) leaped into the air, soaring above his opponents, and showing off his impressive skills. Throughout the entire season, he proved to be a very beneficial member to the Freshman Boys Basketball Team

> > Many questions have been called the greatest question of all time: Where do we come from? How can we end world hunger? Who is the imposter? But one arising question has remained elusive: Will sophomore basketball player Tim Cerny learn how to dunk? The member of the freshman and reserve basketball teams hoped so as they made their way through a unique season.

COVID-19 saw basketball players mask up on the court as they dribbled, shot and scored their way toward the city championship. Players such as Tim Cerny led the reserve and freshman teams through the season. The teams learned skills and plays, completing hundreds of repetitions, aiming for perfection. Building the teams into well-oiled machines required dedication and commitment. "The game is all about effort. If you put in the work and do your job, you and the team will be successful." said freshman Connor Johnson. Through effort and hard work, the two teams progressed through the season and were excited to see what next year would -bring.

Basketball proved to be more than just practice and games. It has been a supportive community with the goal of building players for the future. "Basketball gets you into great shape. Huge bonus. The coaches are great, and the team brings you up. It's a fun way to spend your time," said sophomore Carter Toomey.

Sophomore Carson Campbell agreed, "The coaches can be tough, but they all make you better. They, and the team, push you to be your best, on and off the court."

This community and dedicated environment set East basketball apart from other teams because the players were playing to better themselves and others. There were no self-pleasing agendas sighted with teams like this, only a passion for the challenge of the game.

> > The Spartans varsity and junior vars_ity girls basketball teams worked hard throughout their whole season despite many challenges. Not only did they fa~e the setback of winter sports starting three weeks late, but they also had to make do with losing eight senior players. "We only have 15 girls on the JV and varsity teams and I think a big part of that is due to covid." said Lillie Shaw (10).

"This season has been a lot different from years past, especially with learning ho w to play together as a team after losing all our seniors," . Haley Peterson (12) commented. "But as always, we set our goal for getting to state and winning districts."

This year had proved difficult to make strong team bonds and participate in act ivities together outside practice, but that did not stop the swimmers from trying. Schlegelmilch sai d "I feel like this year the bonding with the team'5" been a, lot better than last year because I've grow n as a person and so have they. 11 Hoesing said "I've enjoyed the upperclassmen trying to get to know me. "

Swim: straining toward the final touch

Coach Uriah certainl y kept the swimmers on their toes, as he created a culture of hard work and determination that surrounded the team. Logan Findla y ( 12) stated " We did the best we could have with the conditions that were present. "

The bo ys still put in the work, even though there were m a n y safety procedures that had to be followed this year due to Covid-19. Findla y went on to sa y "The practices between the girls and boys team were altered so that we practiced at different times." Carefully follo wing the safety guidelines , the boys swim team was still able to thri ve throughout their season.

Even though practices and meets looked slightl y different this past year , the bo y s did not let it stop them from giving it their all , and making e ver y moment in the pool count.

Vinton said his favorite part of the season was "just meeti J new people. The swim team is a very supportive environment, t has a really strong community of people who are supporting eac 1 other at meets and just supporting each other in general. 11

Splish Splash. Joe Flodman(11) spins into a tight ball to enter the water Despite a year with Covid-19, a three week late start to the season, and a new coach, the dive team was up for a challenge. Flodman said one of the biggest challenges was "improving my dives" while he also stated " My favorite part [of this season] has been the new coach "

Dive: up, down, front, l:)ack, GO!

> > "Less is more" perfectly describes the boys dive team. Joe Flodman (11) stated that "The team this past season has been much smaller than previous years." With these small numbers, the di v e team practiced six times a week to perfect their technique.

The divers spent a large amount of their time practicing technique, because unlike swimming, diving is scored by a point system of the execution of skills and the difficulty . Flodman explained "The scoring system is a number out of ten, followed by multiplying that by the difficulty of the specific dive to get the final score." The hardest dive that was on Flodman's li t this year was a "back three and a half twist, or a front two and a half twist."

The di ve r s wasted no time as they strove for perfection during practice, because they hoped th a t the y w ould be able to show off their new and impro ved di v es at the upcoming meets.

Dive Deeper. Evan Keim (11) dives headfirs t into the water. Keim says he started diving because "I liked jumping off the board in the summer when I was a little kid at the 'pool so then by doing it through the team I learned how to do more dives and it is more fun."

Members of Slam Poetry Club, and Drama Club explain what they do in their clubs, and what all goes into making their masterpieces.

> > Snaps fill the room as young student poets share their enlightening thoughts. Slam Poetry was a different style of writing and creating literature that students appreciated together. Students who joined Slam Poetry Club learned ways to better express their thoughts and feelings through "\ Titing.

Tyler Hennecke (9) said "We all bring our different styles of poetry to the table and share our ideas and •critiques, developing our styles and methods along the way. Slam poetry is absolutely an outlet for people to speak their minds."

Along with Hennecke, Alora Schneider ( 12) another club member, shared how her writing process works as she creates her poems.

Schneider said "Writing time honestly depends on how passionate I am about the piece. It's taken me anywhere from days to weeks to get a draft that I'm happy with ... Most of my poetry is about personal feelings, but sometimes I write about politics. It really varies."

In c_onclusion, slam poetry was a resource that students used to share their voice. It was important that students found ways to show their experiences and ideas to others, and many used Slam Poetry Club to do so. With this awesome club, voices were heard, and everyone enjoyed hearing what their fellow poets had to say.

>>Drama Club was an opportunity for student to be able to show their talents and express themselves through the arts. Everything that the students did throughout the year led up to the big moment of performing their shows.

-ora Guerrero (12) shared in detail what Drama Club looked like on a weekly basis, and what all went into creating the productions when she said "Our amazing directors and Pat Vendetti led the way with the shows, we do the set/behind the scenes aspect of the production. The tech team puts their all into making sure the shows turn out beautifully and everything stays in order backstage. The actors and directors work together for months in order to make sure the production is the best it can be. We rehearse every day after school. For the first few weeks we focus on the basics like memorizing our lines, blocking, and getting the stage built and set up."

This sounded like an immense amount of work and preparation, but Dax Petersen ( 11) shared how it was all worth it in the end when they said "I want the audience to fall in love and get lost in the story we tell on stage. I want them to be enthralled from the moment we start. I think drama club has definitely made me more patient and empathetic in some ways, you have to_look at everyone's side of the story, not just your own characters."

Drama Club was not only an outlet for students in the club to share their thoughts and feelings through art, but it was also an outlet for the audience, too. When fellow students, friends, and family members watched the shows they were inspired, challenged and awed by the work of the students.

Students smile as they spend time with each other for the first time in months. Rachel Nelson (12) shared what meetings were like when she said "This photo was from our first show this year "Writers' Runaround" where me and another person on crew, Briley Luethke, are working on a set piece. We were jamming out to some "Hamilton" songs. That day was really exciting for everyone because it was the first chance we were able to see each other again and do something we love. There was an enormous amount of work that went into each show, and as the students worked, they enjoyed the company of their fellow members.

Drama Clubs members watch intently as they see the story of Edgar Allan Poe unfold. Member Patrick Brown (12) said "The scene shown in the picture was called "I Don't Get Out Much."' It was a story about Edgar Allan Poe meeting Emily Dickinson in a graveyard from a computer dating service." This play was put together in a short amount of time, but that did not stop the members from practicing and rehearsing until all the scenes were perfect.

School teaches us general knowledge,, but what could not truly be predicted was everything we needed to know to be successful in our own futures.

DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) took that task head on. Elise Benson (12), the president of DECA, said "DECA is a fun way to learn about businesses in the real world, for high school students who are interested in pursuing a career, and the insights of the fun parts of business.

"DECA met every other week, and they went to their international club meetings once a month. Students got the chance to participate in leadership tivities, community service, and competitions. competed in many different events such as ying, where they would act out situations ospitality and tourism. These talented participated in DECA, got second nals two years in a row. They also •tten events, and presentation

In written events, students got only ten minutes to prepare, so they had to be good under pressure. In presentation events, they were tasked with professional selling or marketing situations; members had months to prepare and make a slideshow or poster of what they were advertising.

Elise Benson joined her sophomore year, and shared how it changed her. She explained that being in DECA improved her public speaking skills, and gave her real world experiences.

Benson's favorite memory of being in DECA was when she got a chance to go to an international career development conference. Her sophomore year she to flew to Orlando, Florida, along with other Lincoln schools to participate in the conference

If students liked to compete, solve problems and think through challenges, DECA was the club for them.

FBLA

> > The Future Business Leaders of America club gave students the opportunity to learn more about the world of business. "We get to dabble in economics, marketing, accounting, and finance amongst other things," said Harley Paprocki ( 11 ). She debated joining the team , but with some advice from her Take Charge teacher, finall y started her FBLA journey at the beginning of her junior year.

"My favorite experience so far would be all of our meetings as a whole, this year we are conducting our after school meetings through zoom and we always have the chance to have our voice heard." said Paprocki.

Zoom was somewhat difficult to work with, however the FBLA team made the best of their situation and they still created a great environment for the students to further their knowledge of business.

Due to obvious restrictions, they held their meetings weekly via zoom where they discussed

how to prepare for competitions and achieve their goals as a team. This year competitions were being held exclusively online, consisting of a series of multiple choice tests taken after school, "The team ended up placing second overall with five members placing in the top five in their division," said Paprocki.

With Mrs . Lori Anderson-Stowe sponsoring the team, the_ students had ~o doubt they would continue to enhance their skills and continue doing well in competitions.

" I would definitel y recommend it to an yone even considering pursuing a future in business," Paprocki said. She expressed that it was never too late to join the FBLA team, and if students were curious about an y part of business i t was definitely worth becoming a member. She plann ed to be a part of the club next year , " I would love to cop.tinue learning about the business world in the fu ture!" she sa id.

>> Did you know that there are over 391,000 plant species in the world? Some are notoriously poisonous, others have helpful medicinal properties and others are used for fuel and construction. The horticulture club may not have used their plants for medicine, fuel or construction, but rather as a way to help students learn about the way plants grow, develop and interact. While plants may seem boring to some, they actually bear fruitful information about how our environmental condition and human impact. The club's president Alora Schneider (12) said the club is a place where students can work with and learn about plants in an effort to make East more green.

The club has been trying to raise money for their new project. "We've been growing salad greens in order to sell them for fund raising. Our goal, by the end of the year, is to have enough money to plant a pollinator garden." said Schneider. A pollinator garden is a unique garden featuring pollen and nectar bearing plants that attract pollinator insects such as bees. This garden would allow club members to work with a variety of new plants, discover more about the pollination process and support pollinator speoes.

Horticulture club has created an environment of friends who enjoy working together and are motivated to help the Earth. Schneider described one of her favorite aspects of the club when she said "My favorite part of the club is doing something I enjoy with my friends. It's fun to see people every week, especially in times like this." The club hoped to grow in the future and continue to plant and care for East's vegetation population. Schneider intended on promoting the club's goal of being "a fun, low stress club with a wholesome goal: make east more green!"

> > Who is the most influential scientist of all time ? The w&1rfd'JJ m&JJ-t i11fftte111ietf 1Jrie111iJJ-t.tJ: Albert Einsteih? Isaac Newton? Marie Curie? Or perhaps Kyle Thompson? Students that were a part of East's Science Olympiad team examined this question, as ~ell as man y others as the y took part in an array of scientific competitions. Ian Me yer ( 11) said, "Competitions consist of various activities such as written exams, builds and experiments. These events range from highly technical to more theoretically : oriented; furthermore, participants who engage in ,these events expose •themselves to the spectra of ~ifferent branches of science."

Unfortun1tely, COVID-19 put a stopper in the team's regular procedure, but hopes remained high for nex t/ year. Neeraj Kadubandi (11) said, "I am looking forward to competing in Science Olympiad because I can employ my knowledge of the different branches of science and further develop my skills and abilities in subjects I am genuinely interested in."

The team • shared these sentiments and were prepared for the 2021 competition season.

2. Tim Berners Lee - Creator of the internet. "The internet has drastically increased the interconnectedness of our world and has improved the living standards of hundreds of millions of people."

1. Jonas Saik - The inventor of the Polio vaccine. "He was effective in creating the modern vaccines we use today."

2. Rosalind Franklin - Discovered DNA. "He found what is the backbone of the human body."

1. Dimitri Mendeleev - Organized elements by chemical properties. "His work helped establish the shape and organization of the modern periodic table of the elements."

2. Marie Curie - Worked with radon and other radioactive substances to try a rid understand their properties. "She was one of the most w id ely :recognized women in science, being the first woman t o earn not just one, but two Nobel prizes."

A member of East's Math Club, Lee explained how Math Club had taught him new and interesting mathematical concepts, methods and ideas, and furthered his mathematical abilities. "It's exciting to find these unique solutions to complicated problems." Lee said.

But the club was not all lectures and lessons, members this past year had weekly opportunities to participate in online competitions, allowing them to test what they had learned and find new concepts to explore. To "sum " it all up, math club was a great way for students to challenge themselves and learn how to apply their mathematical knowledge.

For students interested in making new connections with the elderly, generations connect was the perfect fit.

Elise Benson (12) talked about why she started this club. "My mom works in nursing homes and I noticed that when I visited, a lot of the residents didn't have visitors so I ju t wanted to do a project where we could impact not only members from East but also the residents who didn't get visitors and wanted to make connections with younger people."

Elise Benson also wanted to make this club bigger and explained so~e of · her plan . ''I'm getting involved with Key Club and they're encouraging their members to join and I'm trying to find different ways to involve people who are interested in community service. I hope to spread it to other nursing homes or assisted living facilities in Lincoln and get other schools involved."

So if anyone was interested in making meaningful connection with elderly residents, Generations connect is the perfect fit.

>> Volunteering was the most common way to help the community, and Key Club provided its members many opportunities to do just that. During their time in the club, students made an impact within their community and interacted with different people.

President Abby Chan ( 12) talked about how volunteering with different organizations impacted the students. "Our members are able to learn more about the community and their needs by interacting with the different opportunities we provide. For example, Matt Talbot, they are able to serve at the soup kitchen and a lot of our members have had meaningful interactions there also it's kind of a way to make valuable

connections with students at East."

Another member of the club, Emilee Haggadone (11), spoke about som~ of the difficulties they were facing. "We're all virtual and we can't volunteer as much in person as we normally would but we're still doing a lot, but being able to volunteer at events, make fleece blankets for people and decorate bags for the food bank. All of these things we do to help people is just super important and that's probably my favorite part."

By organizing different act1V1t1es to help the community of Lincoln and the people in it, the members of key clubs were truly making a difference.

Find a way to have fun! Though the cub was not able to meet in person this year, they found other ways to be together. Key Club members got together distantly for a fun game night. Key Club president Abby Chan (12) said "The officer group tlecided a monthly game night would be the best way to increase cooperation within the group and to also have fun with each other. Each officer who was involved lead a different group and got together at the end for a full tournament completion between everyone."

> > Order in the court! Mock trial was a club based on teaching its members about the workings of the law. It equipped students with a basic understanding of how to argue a case. It gave students interesting opportunities such as arguing fictional cases which gave them the opportunity to learn more about court and working in law. Dylan Robertson (12) talked about some of the perks of being in the club. "It gives me experience in an actual courtroom because before Covid we would go to the Lancaster county courthouse and

do our trial there. We would also be in front of a judge."

Dylan also spoke about how many new connections he made. "Almost everyone in mock trial is wanting to go into law, so it's a lot of people doing the same thing as you and it's really nice knowing these people, and it really helps you network." Since Mock Trial Club gave its participants many opportunities to advance their skills in law, it became the perfect club for the future generation of lawyers.

It wasn't me, your Honor! Mock Trial members Dylan Robertson (12) and Ellie Syslo (11) told us a little about Mock Trial. Though unable to meet so far this school year, they told us about some of their favorite memories about the club. Ellie explained 'We got to go to court and it was nerve racking. Even if you were prepared or not, it feels like you're a criminal."

Students share how they vocalize their views in the community Audrey Krieger n Sonya Temores

>> Students brainstormed ideas to further educate themselves and others on rising social issues. Over the summer and into the school year, students from all grades took time to listen, research and share with others about ongoing issues that related to racial inequality, police brutality and Covid-19 that occurred in the U.S and around the globe. Teens took different pathways from social media outreach, hands on work or sit-in meetings to help force change into motion.

Andrea Orozco-Lopez (12) spent a majority of her summer doing a variety of work to help strive for improvements. Orozco-Lopez said "I helped plan one of the Black Lives Matter protests with UNL, so that was a big part of my summer. I helped girls from other schools plan that out, I helped recruit speakers and I also attended a few of the protests. I also helped make signs and shirts."

Orozco-Lopez was grateful for her experiences. "Working with other people in a collective way to accomplish the same goal, and more than anything a goal that is so important to so many people was so beautiful because I not only got to meet a ton of other people, but I also got to share a common interest that was within all of us, and see people come together as a community for a common cause."

In addition to Orozco-Lopez's activism, other students decided they should advocate for their beliefs, too. Jason Manzitto ( 12) used other methods, such as social media, to share his voice. Manzitto said "I use Instagram a lot to post political things and just other social issues that I feel need to be addressed."

Social media was a course of action that Manzitto used to share his ideologies. Manzitto said "I try to address with my friends and the school community the issues that certain demographics have and how they may feel misrepresented and alienated.

These students showed that no matter what, young people have a voice. They worked tirelessly to not only share their views, but to also fight and advocate for those who did not feel as if they had a voice. Through the activism of these teens, the possibilities for change were within reach.

Activists create motivational drawings on the sidewalks to encourage others to vote in the 2020 election. Clarissa Tan (11) said "The picture that I posted was frem an event that helped sign up people in the south downtown area to vote and fill out the census. We also made signs on the sidewalk using spray chalk to get peoples' attention." Through this event, Tan and others were able to help the community share their voice.

"I learned a lot of communication skills. I tho ught [the internship] reall y brou ght out different people with different ideas and all diffe rent backgrounds, and I learned h ow to communicate with them well and be respectful [to wards them]. "

Colors come to life as large and bold images are drawn. Andrea Orozco-Lopez (12) used her creativity to make a sign for a BLM (Black Lives Matter) rally. Orozco-Lopez said "I plan to use my voice, my influence and my powe r to aid the help towards racial equality." The sign was a creative and meaningful representation of the change that Orozco-Lopez hoped to make.

Nothing like the smell of hand sanitizer in the morning. Mr. Dave Bell checks student IDs and gives squirts of hand sanitizer as students enter the building. Each morning before school, students had to self screen for symptoms and put on a mask before they would be allowed in the building. Ashley Bredthauer (10) said, "I feel like having to sanitize before I walk in and after is a little excessive but once again if it keeps us in person I will keep doin g it."

Slathered in sanitizer. Mr. Jeff Campbell drops some hand sanitizer in Evan Keim's (11) hands. This year students were sanitized every time they walked in a room. Though not everyone liked it, they did anyways because they knew it was there to keep them safe. "I don't really like getting my hands sprayed with hand sanitizer when I walk in the morning cause it's kinda weird but I have to do it so I can go to school," Keim said.

Teaching and bleaching. Students in Ms. Emily Mathews' class help wipe down tables after class. Students and teachers alike were required to wipe down all high-touch surfaces at the end of each class period with a bleach solution. Kooper Barnes (9) said that for her "wearing a mask was a little weird, but I got used to that. And having to social distance was a little weird."

WHO KNOWS WHO?

Brooke McCartney (12) felt the most alive and energized when she was in the East Gym. McCartney said "The east gym is probably my favorite place because of volleyball. Whenever I'm there with my team , I feel excited to play. Every first home game of the season, there's alwa y s such a great crowd, and a lot of people always show up. "

The East Gym was a special place for McCartney as she created new memories there throughout the year.

Students described the places at school where their best memories reside.

> > Mason Miigerl (10) had some of his best experiences and memories in the weight room. Miigerl said "The weight room is my favorite room because it's the most fun class I've had. I'm always really happy going in there because I get to spend time with all of my friends. My favorite memory is walking into that room freshman year and getting to see all my friends together again."

Miigerl and his buddies enjoyed the entertaining atmosphere that the weight room offered.

> > Cooper Penkava (10) enjoyed passing time with his friends in the commons and courtyards during lunch time. Penkava said "I really like the commons because I would eat lunch there every day and go hang out in the courtyards afterward. I feel like it's really relaxing there and it's always a good time with my friends." Penkava and his friends appreciated the pleasing environment that the commons and courtyards embodied.

> > Claire Ehlers (11) felt at home when she practiced and performed in the auditorium. Ehlers said, "The auditorium is my favorite place because I love my music. I'm in show choir, dance and I do some theater stuff. The arts are a big part of my life. I feel really excited when I walk into the auditorium because whenever I'm in there I get the urge to perform, wh~ther it's dancing or singing, which really makes me happy. My favorite memory from there is when I found out I made varsity show choir ~s a sophomore." The auditorium from this moment on will forever have a special place in Ehler's heart.
