Celebrating Young Quilt Artists

This is the second year Bryan Community has partnered with the Lincoln Quilters Guild to complete beautiful quilts for each parenting student. Since fall, volunteers from the Lincoln Quilters Guild [LQG] have worked in the classroom weekly with eighteen Bryan students teaching them about fabric, color, design, and guiding them through the techniques of quilt making. Fabric was donated by LQG members or was purchased with funds provided by a grant from the Woods Charitable Fund.

The Classroom Teacher was Cheryl Wilkins. Volunteers at the Bryan Community included Margrethe Ahlschwede, Sandy Anderson, Barb Brown, Lauren Davis, Ginny Harvey, Judy Lane, Martha Lane, Kate Laucomer, Sue Lantz, Cathie Miller, Janet Miller, Marlene Saunders, Elizabeth Sterns, Sarah Elizabeth Sterns, Chris Taylor, and Lois Wilson.

Quilts were featured at the Bernina Sewing Studio's Classroom Gallery under the title, "Celebrating Young Quilt Artists", May 8th &9th.

LITERACY CELEBRATED AT B RYAN

February aw the first Literacy Festival at Bryan Community. Students chose two essions with renowned authors, poets, song writers, film makers, and a Holocaust survivor. 12 different artists and authors from the Lincoln-area shared experiences of

John Walker, songwriter how literacy is a part of their daily jobs and lives. Literacy is not just a subject taught in school, but a life skill that will be important in many jobs in the future

Students in various science cour able to travel to Ash Falls State located near Royal, NE in north Nebraska. They were also able t o local fishery and find out more ab fish are stocked in local lakes. ,. trip came about due to a grant fr specifically for field trips.

On May each level planned student activities for the entire afternoon. While levels 1 & 3 stayed on campus, level 2 tudents did activities at Pioneers Park including a talk by an inspirational speaker. "I was going to [another high school]for 2 and a half years before I came here. I knew I wasn't going to graduate on time and none of the teachers cared about me as a student. My junior year, I failed every class. I talked to my counsler and I came to Bryan right away. This fall, I want to got to SCC for a while and then I hope I can go to U L for Busines or just stay at sec.

Gold Star Salute

The Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools held the 20th annual Gold Star Salute on May 6, 2009 at Pershing Center. The Gold Star Awards recognize outstanding educators, volunteers, and students who made contributions to support and improve their schools.

In addition to teachers and student scholarship awardees, each school selects a student and a staff or community volunteer to be recognized. This year's Gold Star Winners were Silvia Castillo and Elizabeth Stems, representing the Lincoln Quilter's Guild. At this year's ceremony, the State Farm Outstanding educators were also recognized.
