Mass of the Holy Spirit Most Catholic schools, and especially Jesuit high schools and universities, celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit at the beginning of every school year. It is a tradition almost as old as the Society of Jesus itself, going back to the first Jesuit school in Messina, Sicily in 1548.

As we gather as one community to celebrate once more the covenant of love between God and God’s people, let us give thanks for all we have been given. Let us also implore God for the guidance and strength of God’s Holy Spirit in all our endeavors.

Participating in Mass The Catholic Mass is the foundational ritual expression of the Catholic, Jesuit mission and identity of Loyola University New Orleans. All members of the Loyola community and beyond are invited to participate in this ritual to the fullest extent possible. Through the common postures and prayers of Mass, all participants express their desire for communion with God and with each other. The reception of the Body of Christ in the form of consecrated bread expresses the unity of those who profess the Catholic faith and have been sacramentally initiated into the Catholic church. The reception of a blessing is available to all who join the communion procession. Guidance for those unfamiliar with Catholic Mass is available for those who would like it. Simply sit in the pews marked “Mass Guidance Here.”

Luke 4:16-20

Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord." Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, "Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." Priest: The Lord be with you. Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.
