Since 1975, The City of San Antonio has been lighting the River Walk for the holiday season. As the River Walk expanded, so did the lighting displays, with recent year-round installations in the heart of the Downtown River Walk that include brilliant landscape lighting and whimsical glowing sculptures that are beautifully reflected in the water and perfectly complement the more than 100,000 twinkling holiday lights dangling from riverside cypress trees. Lighting continues throughout the Museum Reach, one mile north of downtown in the Pearl District, where beautiful vignettes of trees and landmarks are truly awe-inspiring. The Most Enchanting Season Welcome to San Antonio — you have picked an extraordinary time to visit! I always think of October as the gateway to San Antonio’s most magical season. This time of year along the River Walk is simply lovely — and lively. Many cultural celebrations occur — San Antonio is, after all, a city steeped in more than 300 years of traditions and heritage — and we are settling in for two more full months of non-stop holiday merriness. The weather is truly fabulous, with a cool crispness that draws you outdoors. Even the light changes. San Antonio is a city proud of its multi-cultural identity, and this is evident through annual events like Muertos Fest and the Day of the Dead River Parade and Festival — joyful celebrations in memory of loved ones who have passed, and a tradition we share with Mexico, our southern neighbor. One of San Antonio’s Sister-Cities is Chennai, India, and since 2009, Diwali SA Festival of Lights has included traditional Indian dance and food along with an epic fireworks display over the Tower of the Americas and another colorful nighttime river parade. You will also find references in our food, which fuses the flavors and cooking styles of early settlers into a one-of-a-kind South Texas cuisine that can be sampled throughout the River Walk. Halloween brings exciting events for all ages. The San Antonio Zoo joins in the non-scary fun, then transitions to the holidays in mid-November with light displays throughout the property until the end of the year. Holiday markets inspired by those in Germany can be found from La Villita Historic Arts Village to the Pearl District, and our lovingly restored downtown buildings now house unique bars and restaurants to toast the holidays with family and friends. If you prefer live entertainment, San Antonio brings world-class performances to its collection of historic downtown theatres.

after Thanksgiving, this year’s theme is “Toy Box Adventures,” and the evening’s lineup includes entertainment at the Arneson River Theatre, 27 festive river parade barges and a true “flip the switch” moment when more than 100,000 brightly colored lights draping the cypress trees on the river banks are turned on. This holiday lights showcase continues to shine brilliantly every night through January 5, and beautifully enhances other December events such as the Ford Holiday Boat Caroling, the Ford Fiesta de las Luminarias and themed River Cruises.

But the grand event that San Antonians believe officially kicks off the holiday season in the Alamo City is the Ford Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony, now in its 43rd year. Always held on the Friday

For San Antonio, South Texas cuisine is not just something we eat, it is a way of life. Deep Mexican roots, early German, French and Polish settlements, and downhome ranching influences have all converged to create a one-of-a-kind cuisine. Texans can be credited for this scrumptious hybrid that encompasses everything from Mexican and Tex-Mex to barbecue, steaks, chili and even seafood, as we are just a couple of hours from the Gulf Coast. And, of course, our world-renowned River Walk is home to it all. CAFE OLÉ Cafe Olé has been a hot spot for Tex-Mex for more years than we can count, but after bringing in chef Gilbert Flores, who graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, Cafe Olé has been garnering attention for stellar street tacos and tequila. The restaurant now serves over 80 different varietals of tequila and offers an expansive menu of Mexican favorites, from empanadas and enchiladas to a mouthwatering Cochinita Pibil, a Yucatan-style barbecued pork that is slow roasted in banana leaves. The traditional street tacos can be ordered with carne asada (beef) or al pastor (pork) and pineapple. They also offer smoked tacos made with brisket or pulled pork, and the ubiquitous fish and shrimp tacos. Cafe Olé is also proud to have recently introduced their new Serape Room for a unique visual dining experience, designed by local artists. LONE STAR CAFE Cafe Olé’s sister restaurant, Lone Star Cafe, has been serving guests for over 40 years in the heart of the River Walk. Their Texas-sized balcony is a fantastic place to while away the afternoon or evening. Lone Star is another superb choice for South Texas cuisine, with offerings that range from flame-broiled steaks and succulent fried catfish to hand-breaded chicken fried steak with cream gravy (a Southern classic), barbecue and burgers. The hearty steak offerings include all of the classic cuts cooked to order. Add to that a loaded baked potato and peach cobbler for dessert.

Lone Star Cafe THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS Similarly, The Republic of Texas has also been serving guests delightful South Texas cuisine for almost 50 years — in the historic Clifford building, where the visionary architect, R.H.H. Hugmann, who developed the concept of a glorious River Walk dining venue, once officed — the River Walk has a long and storied history. The Republic of Texas likes to call their menu Texican-American and features popular items like BBQ, burgers, hand-breaded country fried steak, Mexican food such as enchiladas and fajitas, and an array of shrimp plates. They also offer their own hand-selected Republic Anejo Tequila, bottled in Mexico, and only available at the restaurant.

the republic of texas IRON CACTUS The Iron Cactus, located in the middle of the San Antonio River Walk, is always a choice spot for scrumptious authentic Mexican cuisine and fun fusion twists, not to mention a margarita or three. Sidle on in for lunch, dinner or even Sunday brunch. Enjoy handmade guacamole served tableside along with some mouthwatering crab-stuffed jalapeño poppers, salsa and queso, lobster tacos and a fresh Ahi Tuna ceviche for starters before digging into a juicy Angus beef iron steak, bone-in stuffed pork chop or sizzling fajitas, served with pillowy corn or flour tortillas. Sunday brunch highlights fan favorites from omelets and huevos rancheros to pancakes and Belgian waffles with whipped cream and strawberries. Order a Texas Bloody Mary garnished with pickled veggies and a bacon strip to top it off to perfection.

THE ORIGINAL MEXICAN RESTAURANT Interestingly, the “original” Original Mexican Restaurant on the river was actually founded in 1899. Although it closed down in the 60s, this current restaurant, located just across the river on Losoya Street from the original, was granted permission to use the name and has continued the tradition of serving San Antonio-style Mexican food since the mid-80s. The menu is comfortingly familiar with traditional nachos, chalupas, crispy beef tacos, quesadillas, giant burritos and enchiladas. And make sure to order a heavenly slice of their signature Kangaroo Court Cheesecake, which comes topped with either chocolate or caramel sauce.

THE COUNTY LINE Of course, you cannot visit San Antonio without digging into some finger-lickin’-good barbecue at The County Line. With a riverside patio and open-air bar serving ice cold beer and luscious margaritas to accompany hearty plates of smoked meats, you have just found yourself a taste of the Texas Hill Country right on the River Walk. Brisket platters are stacked with a variety of meats of your choosing. They have got chicken, peppered turkey, brisket, St. Louis pork ribs and sausage, along with sandwich and taco options, plus a slew of homemade sides and desserts. Their “Famous Homemade Bread” also deserves a mention. You might think you only need half, but you will want to eat the whole darn loaf.

AMBLER TEXAS KITCHEN + COCKTAILS For a more upscale experience, make reservations at Ambler Texas Kitchen + Cocktails, located inside the stunning Hotel Contessa. The focus at Ambler is on creative plates and craft cocktails. You can enjoy a cocktail in the beautiful lobby before heading into dinner. The patio, with views of the more serene section of the River Walk, is just a divine choice for dining out, especially as the cooler months present themselves. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner. Opt in for tacos or a Southern fried sticky bun for breakfast, blackened gulf red snapper or smoked turkey club for lunch, and a juicy double-cut Kurobuta pork chop or Texas Akaushi cast iron chicken fried steak for dinner.

FOUR BROTHERS SOUTHERN PROVISIONS Finally, Four Brothers Southern Provisions, located inside Omni La Mansión del Rio Hotel is another top choice for an elevated dining experience with a focus on South Texas cuisine. Also open for breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner, not to mention bar bites from 3:00 to 5:00pm, the options abound. Indeed, if you want an authentic Alamo City experience, order their San Antonio “Chili Queens” chili made with American Wagyu beef, aged cheddar, scallions and crema, with a side of cornbread. You may not know that chili was actually invented right here in San Antonio. For a “grand feast,” be brave and order the Tomahawk Dry-Aged Reserve steak for dinner, served with confit marble potatoes, asparagus and house-made chimichurri. Dine your way through South Texas history, culture and cuisine without ever leaving the River Walk!

Downtown San Antonio is full of unique buildings steeped in rich history, and the River Walk is no exception. Home to many historic landmarks, which have been transformed and preserved over the years, these unique establishments promise good times and great cocktails for visitors’ and locals’ fall and holiday celebrations.

EL COLEGIO The space that housed the former library of St. Mary’s School of Law in 1934 was recently transformed into one of San Antonio’s newest, most unique spots on the River Walk. Located next to the lobby of the Omni La Mansion del Rio hotel, and decked with hardwood floors, dark wood accents, and classic jazz music in the background, El Colegio Bar boasts an intimate atmosphere that reflects pre- and post-prohibition eras. The bar celebrates Texas libations, including modern renditions of cocktails from the early 1930s, showcasing over 75 premium spirits, craft beers and wines produced in Texas — in some cases a few miles from the bar in the Hill Country. Expertly mixed cocktails are served in elegant glassware, using high-end craft ice. Paired with the extensive drink menu are a range of snacks, including warm nuts, traditional shrimp tacos, cheeseburgers, Cajun-spiced chicken wings and portobello mushroom tacos. Step back in time and enjoy an evening at an old school classic.

Naranja Tequila and Mezcal Bar NARANJA TEQUILA AND MEZCAL BAR At the Hotel Valencia Riverwalk, the newly reimagined Naranja Tequila and Mezcal Bar offers a selection of tequilas and mezcals not found elsewhere in San Antonio. Naranja offers a curated list of tequila in all its expressions, from blanco to reposado, añejo and cristalino, comprising most well-known labels as well as an extensive list of mezcales. All are available served straight up for sipping and in flights for those curious to learn more about the spirit.

The menu also includes signature tequila and mezcal cocktails, and small plates that complement the agave-forward offerings. Sip and nibble the night away accompanied by the Latin jazz sounds in the background, and partake in Happy Hour daily from 5:00 to 8:00pm. In the future, the bar plans to add events such as tequila dinners and guided tastings, which will make wonderful Christmas gifts.

CASA CATRINA If you have always wanted to visit Mexico during Day of the Dead festivities, you have come to the right place. Housed in the historic building formerly occupied by the beloved Fig Tree restaurant, Casa Catrina is a place unlike any other on the River Walk. With a colorful décor and festive atmosphere, this Mexican restaurant bar will add a unique touch to your holiday celebrations. The building, dating to 1847, changed hands a few times over the years and was occupied by a French family from 1880 until 1932. The house stood vacant for 15 years until it was purchased by local artist Warren Hunter, who completely renovated the two-room adobe structure. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Henshaw, who owned the house from 1958 to 1970, added a second story and lived there until restaurant operator Frank Phelps bought it in 1970 and opened the original Fig Tree restaurant. Still maintaining its original ambience and historical content, it has been transformed into an intimate restaurant with an indoor bar and a scenic riverside patio, and a menu that ranges from street tacos to grilled entrees and delicious desserts, paired with beer, wine and signature cocktails.

MEZCALERIA AT PULLMAN MARKET Pullman Market opened earlier this year as the largest culinary market in the Southwest. Housing various restaurants, bars and food markets, the 40,000-square-foot space occupies the former Samuels Glass Company headquarters. Lovingly restored, preserving the building’s existing structure and shell, the project not only eliminated tons of waste from local landfills, but also added to the historic and cultural fabric of its context. Light-filled patios, created by infill between structural elements, connect Pullman Market to the rest of Pearl’s bustling pedestrian experience.

Located in the center of the market, adjacent to Mezquite Restaurant, Mezcaleria is a fun, agave-centered bar serving delicious bites and drinks paying homage to San Antonio’s Mexican history. Expect familiar items such as nachos and guacamole, and creative takes on tacos and aguachiles, paired with Mexican wines, ice cold beer and house cocktails made with Mexican spirits.

ZOCCA CUISINE D’ITALIA AT THE WESTIN RIVERWALK Zocca’s newly remodeled riverside bar, situated along a lovely, quite stretch of the River Walk, is a great gathering space, with seasonal cocktail menus and substantial bar bites. It is also a choice spot to reserve for holiday parades and dinner. But if you would rather leave dry land to celebrate, hop aboard a specialty cruise for a truly unique experience.

Sip, Drift and Chill Cocktail Cruises include creative cocktails and charcuterie over a one-hour tour on October 5 and 12 at 8:00pm. AMELIA SOCIAL LOUNGE AND LUNATIQUE ROOFTOP BAR Located in Tobin Hill beside Brackenridge Golf Course and adjacent to the northern River Walk, the Creamery District is the former home of the Borden Dairy plant, recognized as a historic landmark. Constructed in 1933, its Moderne Movement design is highlighted by cast-in-place concrete and a sleek, streamlined appearance with lots of glass. Just across the street, the Menefee Oak, a nearly 100-year-old Live Oak with an impressive canopy, adds to the historic feeling of The Creamery. The building now houses many fantastic concepts, including Amelia Social Lounge and sister Lunatique Rooftop Bar. Named after Amelia Earhart, this elegant lounge invokes the opulence and exclusivity of Hollywood glamour of the 1920s. The menu focuses on classic cocktails and a versatile wine selection, with fancy snacks complemented by live jazz vibes at a volume that does not overwhelm conversation. Lunatique is a lush rooftop garden overlooking the river, serving a curated selection of small bites designed to pair with innovative cocktails, wine and craft beers. A stunning handcrafted metal tree, adorned with 1,000 shimmering leaves, combines natural elements with an urban design.

MAJESTIC THEATRE It is always a glorious and memorable experience seeing a show at the historic Majestic Theatre. Mark your calendar and fall into these fantastic celebrations. CELEBRATING DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS Dancing, smiling skeletons, vibrant papel picado and marigolds everywhere? San Antonio pulls out all the stops for Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Ticketed seating is available at the Arneson River Theatre and along the River Walk. You can even reserve riverside seating at restaurants for dinner, drinks and a magnificent show! The beloved festival returns for its 12th annual celebration with a two-day festival when everyone can immerse themselves in the traditions and joyful remembrance of Día de los Muertos.

The centerpiece of the celebration is the creation of altars, known as ofrendas, which are elaborately decorated with marigolds, candles, photos and offerings to honor the deceased. The atmosphere is both festive and reverent, with families and artists coming together to create stunning displays that reflect personal memories and cultural traditions. The festival serves as a platform to highlight local artists, artisans and vendors, making it a true San Antonio celebration.

Día de los Muertos at the Missions October 12-November 15 San Antonio Missions National Historical Park San Antonio has the largest concentration of Spanish colonial missions in North America, with five in total, all recognized as the only World Heritage Site in Texas by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Each Mission Church parish community — Mission Concepción, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan and Mission Espada — has created an altar as a way to honor, remember and celebrate their mission ancestors and loved ones who have passed away. Visitors can view the altars individually or choose to participate in the El Camino de San Antonio Missions, a pilgrimage in partnership with Spain’s El Camino de Santiago de Compostela, and hike the 20mile trail to be immersed in San Antonio’s rich history and culture. 24 RIO Magazine

Symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and good over evil, the festival is celebrated with a grand event at Hemisfair and the Arneson River Theatre, attracting thousands of people from various cultural backgrounds. The celebration of Diwali in San Antonio includes a variety of performances, from traditional Indian dance and music to modern interpretations of Bollywood hits. The event is a feast for the senses, with colorful costumes, rhythmic music and delicious Indian cuisine available from numerous food vendors. One of the most anticipated parts of Diwali San Antonio is the lighting of the diyas, or oil lamps, which are placed on the water at the fountains in Hemisfair. Dance performances and the River Parade that runs through the Downtown Reach of the River Walk can be viewed from the Arneson River Theatre, and the night ends with an epic fireworks display over the Tower of the Americas.

Celebrating Indigenous Peoples: Yanaguana Indian Arts Festival November 9 | 10:00am to 4:00pm San Antonio’s cultural celebrations are not complete without acknowledging the city’s indigenous heritage. The Briscoe Western Art Museum’s Yanaguana Indian Arts Festival is an annual event that honors the art, culture and history of Native American tribes, particularly those from the South Texas region. Named after the indigenous word for the San Antonio River, the festival features a wide range of activities, performances, storytelling sessions and live demonstrations of indigenous crafts such as pottery, beadwork and basket weaving. Accompanying this year’s festival is Storytellers: Narrative Art and the West, an exhibition that reveals the breadth of narrative art produced in the Southwest from the early twentieth century to today. The exhibition, which runs through January 19, 2025, features more than 70 remarkable works curated from the prestigious collections of the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, the Briscoe and private lenders. The Briscoe also tips its hat to the holiday season on Sunday, December 1 with its annual Cowboy Christmas, where everyone is welcome to snap pictures with Cowboy Santa, enjoy crafts and take part in a special 12 Days of Christmas scavenger hunt through the museum’s fantastic collection.

30th Annual Mariachi Extravaganza December 5-7 The Mariachi Extravaganza is one of the most prominent mariachi music festivals, and has delighted audiences for three decades. Hosted at the Lila Cockrell Theatre inside the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center, the festival celebrates the history of Latin music while promoting cultural preservation. The lineup of events includes a concert with world-renowned musicians and the winners of the competition series. Held the day after Thanksgiving, the parade begins at 6:00pm at the Tobin Center and winds along the Downtown River Walk. Then at 7:00pm, the holiday lights are turned on in a ceremony at Arneson River Theatre, followed by a live broadcast of the parade.

San Antonio loves a parade — especially if it is on the river. Paris drew high praise for the originality of its Olympic Parade of Nations on the Seine. But when it comes to river parading, San Antonio is way ahead. For well over a century, folks in this fiesta-loving town have celebrated all kinds of occasions with floating parades. These days, San Antonio stages them so well — and so often — that you might call it the River Parade Capital of the World.

"In 1968, the Texas Harp & Shamrock Society’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival, when we dyed the river bright green, was the Paseo’s first big river parade,” recalled former executive director Gayle Spencer. The Holiday River Parade and River Lighting debuted in 1983. More parades were added to celebrate different holidays over the years. Today, Visit San Antonio, the city’s official tourism agency, manages the River Walk and more river parades than ever. "The Holiday River Parade is our biggest one," said Roslyn Castaneda, Director of River Walk Operations for Visit San Antonio. “It takes 11 months to plan.”

1945 Veterans Welcome Home River Parade The San Antonio River winds through downtown, and the River Walk is a magical place for a parade. The old stone paths along the banks are too narrow for a big parade. But the river is the perfect place for floats. River-borne pageantry began here around the turn of the 19th century. In American Venice: The Epic Story of San Antonio's River, historian Lewis F. Fisher described the first recorded reference to a river parade here. In 1905, during the city’s annual spring festival (today’s Fiesta® San Antonio), "the masked king of the festival arrived on a flower-decked, torchlit flotilla, its royal barge decorated in silver and gold." By 1907, Fisher wrote, “…thousands gathered to watch the parade. Strings of colored lights cris-crossed the river and glowed in the trees from Houston Street to the Mill bridge." Dozens of skiffs lit by Japanese lanterns carried costumed celebrants. As the masked king's barge passed the reviewing stand, the band played "Hail the Conquering Hero Comes," and fireworks lit the night. The parades were fabulous. But the river was still a muddy, unpredictable stream. Temporary dams washed out, and a series of floods dampened the river's parading for decades until a cutoff channel tamed the downtown section of the river. The city mounted a massive project to build and beautify the River Walk. A few river parades occurred during those years — one in 1936, celebrating the Texas Centennial, and a 1940 River Jubilee and Night Parade that was a soft opening for the new River Walk. In 1941, a grand dedication ceremony to celebrate the new River Walk kicked off Fiesta San Antonio. The major event was a nighttime river parade staged by the Texas Cavaliers and their King Antonio — a fraternal men's group that replaced the original "masked kings" of early Fiestas. Some 50,000 people lined the magnificent new River Walk. They filled the new Arneson River Theatre to cheer the procession of 61 flowerdecked plywood boats. King Antonio waved from a majestic galvanized iron barge. Another barge carried the king’s white horse. Unfortunately, all the wild cheering spooked the steed, and it capsized its barge. But the parade was a huge success, and Fiesta’s annual Texas Cavaliers River Parade is now one of the most popular events of Fiesta. For almost 30 years, it was the city’s only big river parade. HemisFair '68 brought international attention to San Antonio and the River Walk. Downtown business owners formed the Paseo del Rio Association. They started staging events — including parades — to attract local residents and visitors. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

That is just one of the 11 annual river parades. Visit San Antonio’s River Walk team is mainly responsible for eight of them — the Holiday River Parade, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, Pride, Mariachi Festival, Salute at Sunset, Parade of Lights and Day of the Dead. Three others — the Texas Cavaliers, the Rey Feo Foundation’s Super Heroes for Education and Diwali SA parades are produced by independent civic groups with the River Walk’s cooperation. All of them draw big crowds. There are other, mostly smaller river parades for special occasions, such as the Spurs’ NBA championships. Visiting dignitaries — Queen Elizabeth, Bill Clinton and others — have greeted throngs of spectators from River Walk barges. Castaneda said it is vital to be able to change things up to keep River Walk visitors engaged and entertained. The Mardi Gras, St. Patrick's and Pride parades are now held twice in a row, to meet demand from the booming new population of residents drawn by development around the Pearl District. “We had never taken parades upriver to the Museum Reach, beyond the Lock and Dam in the river, and residents and visitors told us they really wanted to see parades there,” said Castaneda. First, the parade goes around the Museum Reach. Then they move the barges to the traditional parade route along the Downtown River Walk and do the parade again for the larger crowd.

“We also heard that people want multiple opportunities to see the parades, so we have something every night on some long weekends. The Ford Parade of Lights, featuring barges with RIO Magazine 37

colorful lighted props and lanterns, does not feature people. It is more like a gorgeous floating art display, illuminating the river every night over two long weekends. The Salute at Sunset, a tribute to America's military, takes place on four nights during the Fourth of July weekend,” Castaneda added. "Our River Walk is so unique, and our parades are so unique. Nobody does this the way San Antonio does it," said celebrity chef and entrepreneur Johnny Hernandez, who partners with Visit San Antonio to produce the Day of the Dead River Parade and Festival. "It is a fun beautiful way to share our culture and traditions intertwined with our culinary heritage. What I love is the creative aspect. I have some great artist connections in Mexico, and they help produce some of the barges.” Castaneda said she watched the Olympic Parade on the Seine but did not try to compare it to San Antonio's parades. "They used much larger boats for a much larger river. And here, we decorate our floats in different themes depending on the holiday,” she said, adding, “I also thought about what our parades have in common — they give people so much happiness and joy."
