From Homesteading to Hospitality Located in Moose, Wyoming, Lost Creek Ranch is nestled between the Teton and Gros Ventre mountain ranges in the Jackson Hole valley. For the last 11,000 years, the Teton Wilderness has been utilized by Indigenous tribes for summer hunting, Teton Pass serving as a thru-way in the Rocky Mountains for travel and trade. Rising sharply from the valley floor, the Tetons were known to the Shoshone people as “Teewinot,” meaning ‘many pinnacles.’ Although John Colter is often credited as being the first white man to set eyes on the Tetons, it wasn’t until fur trappers John Hoback, Jacob Reznor and Edward Robinson led the Overland Astorian Expedition in the early 19th century that this land was considered ‘discovered.’ By the 1800s, the region was used as open grazing land, and in 1915, the land on which Lost Creek sits was patented to a farmer named Raymond Kent under the Homestead Act. The land passed through several hands before being acquired by Albert Schwabacher in 1927; it has been a working guest ranch ever since, initially welcoming small groups via the Union Pacific railroad under the name Block S Ranch. After visiting the area in 1926 and falling in love with the unrivaled wilderness, John D. Rockefeller began his controversial acquisition of private lands in Teton County. Albert Schwabacher was one of the few ranchers who refused to sell. As a result, Lost Creek Ranch is uniquely privately owned, and is now surrounded on either side by Grand Teton National Park (310,000 acres) and Bridger-Teton National Forest (3.4 million acres).
In 1955, Edwin and Molly Goodridge purchase the Block S Ranch from Albert and May Schwabacher. They began to run the ranch as a dude ranch for paying guests. In 1968, Gerald Halpin acquired the ranch and operations continued as a guest ranch. Mr. Halpin was a steward of the land and became a founding member of the Grand Teton National Park Foundation in 1997, later donating a portion of the ranch to the park. In 2024, Lost Creek Ranch entered a new era when the Halpin Trust entrusted the ranch to the Gottwald family of Virginia. Their connection to Lost Creek, however, began many years earlier - not as owners, but as guests. Like so many families who return year after year, the Gottwalds discovered that a week at Lost Creek becomes something much greater than a vacation: It becomes a tradition. Summers spent riding trails, sharing meals in the lodge, and watching children grow into confident young riders became woven into the fabric of their own family's history. Today, they are honored to serve as stewards of a place that has welcomed guests for nearly a century. Their commitment is to preserve everything that makes Lost Creek special while thoughtfully investing in its future, ensuring that each new generation of guests can experience the same sense of wonder, connection, and belonging that first brought their own family back to the ranch, year after year. Generations of Gottwalds at Lost Creek Ranch Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, we are a close-knit family spanning three generations of the Bruce Gottwald family. Our connection to Lost Creek Ranch began in the mid-1990s, when we first came here as guests. Like so many families who have passed through these gates, we quickly fell in love with this remarkable corner of the West. For ten summers, our family returned to Lost Creek. We came back for the iconic views of the Tetons, days spent on horseback, scenic floats down the Snake River, fly fishing, hiking, cookouts and campouts under Wyoming skies. But much more than any single activity, we returned for the feeling of this place: the traditions created together, the friendships formed, and the opportunity to slow down and experience the West as a family. Those summers had a lasting impact on us. They strengthened our love for Jackson Hole and the American West, eventually inspiring our family to own a ranch in Montana, where we have spent nearly two decades continuing many of the traditions that began here. Today, we are teaching another generation to ride, fish, hunt, explore, and appreciate the responsibility that comes with caring for these special places. Just as important as the landscape were the people who welcomed us here. The wranglers and staff made our family feel like part of theirs, and many of those relationships lasted well beyond our weeks at the ranch. Some members of our family even returned to work at Lost Creek for brief periods, experiencing the ranch from the other side of the guest experience.
Because we knew Lost Creek first as guests, we understand just how meaningful a week here can be. Our family also brings a deep appreciation for hospitality, including ownership and operation of The Georges Inn, a boutique property in Lexington, Virginia, recognized by Travel + Leisure among the Top 100 Hotels in the World in 2020. We believe the best hospitality is deeply personal, built through genuine relationships, thoughtful details, shared experiences, and the people who make you want to return year after year. We also recognize the extraordinary legacy entrusted to us. For generations, the Halpin family stewarded this land with tremendous care, creating a place where guests could experience the treasures of Grand Teton National Park and the Bridger-Teton National Forest while enjoying the warmth and comfort of a true Western guest ranch. We have enormous respect for the traditions they established, their commitment to the greater Jackson Hole community, and the generations of guests and staff who helped make Lost Creek what it is today. As Lost Creek approaches its century mark, our goal is not to reinvent what has made this place special, but to thoughtfully carry it forward. We hope to preserve its character, honor its history, care for its land and animals, and continue elevating the experience for generations to come. Growing up in Central Texas, I was a lifelong cowgirl with a dream of seeing the wide-open places of the American West. I never imagined that one of those places would eventually become home for me each summer. Today, my husband, Seth, and I pack up our lives each May and make the journey to Lost Creek Ranch, where we're fortunate to welcome back familiar faces in both guests and staff, who have become like extended family. What begins as another summer season quickly feels more like a reunion. Like many who find their way here, we're no strangers to the Western way of life. Seth is a custom saddle maker whose passion for craftsmanship is matched only by his love of team roping. Summers at the ranch are spent wherever he's needed most constructing fences, scouting fishing spots on the river, or investing in the next generation of cowboys and cowgirls through rodeo and horsemanship. There are some places that leave an impression long after you've returned home. The ranch has a way of doing just that. Whether it's your first glimpse of the Tetons at sunrise, the sound of the herd on the first sunset release from the barn, or conversations shared around the campfire after a day on the trail, this place has a remarkable way of slowing life down and bringing people together. Each season, we're privileged to welcome families from around the world, many of whom have returned for decades. We've watched children become confident riders, planned proposals that result in new returning families, and even said final goodbyes to loved ones. It’s the traditions, and the people who create them, that make Lost Creek so special. Designed for children who are potty trained through age 10, Lost Creek Ranch's Kids Club is a thoughtfully crafted Western experience where curiosity is encouraged, friendships are formed, and every day brings something new to discover. Guided by our enthusiastic counselors, kids spend their days immersed in the traditions of ranch life. They groom horses in the barn, search for wildlife along shaded trails, create Western-inspired crafts, cool off with games at the pool, and learn about the natural wonders that surround the ranch. Every activity is designed to inspire confidence, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. Of course, no week at Lost Creek would be complete without becoming a little cowboy or cowgirl. From practicing with a rope in the arena to decorating cowboy cookies, painting bandanas, and gathering with new friends for movie nights and evening games, Kids Club is filled with the simple moments children remember long after returning home. Trail rides are only available for guests ages 6 and older. Children under six may participate in leadaround rides in the barn and arena.
Traveling with Children Under 2? Because our Kids Club begins at potty-trained ages, children under two stay complimentary, allowing families to bring a nanny or family member to provide personalized care. We are also happy to coordinate a local nanny service before your arrival and welcome caregivers to enjoy ranch amenities during your stay. Executive Chef, John Merrill Growing up in a small town in Hamburg, Pennsylvania, nestled beside the Appalachian Mountains, Chef John developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors. His passion for culinary arts was ignited by observing his mother and grandmother create family meals.
“Prior to the ranch and for the past six years, I've worked under Jeremy Nolan, an acclaimed chef and author. Working with him taught me that food is truly an art form. He also instilled in me an appreciation for different cultures and their cuisines. I was drawn to Lost Creek Ranch because it combines two of my favorite things: the outdoors and cooking.” Each season, Chef John crafts a new menu that highlights local provisions, Rocky Mountain culture, and Indigenous inspirations.

The ranch is the jewel in the area. The setting is stunning. Service and amenities are definitely upper tier for a dude ranch. Their staff members are all rockstars in their field who are eager to give you the time of your life while making it all seem effortless. They love their job which makes it easy for the guests to relax into indulging the comfortable lodging, delicious food (catered to dietary preferences) and fun activities. My family is vegan and the kitchen prepared creative dishes for us at every meal time. We liked the variety of trail rides customized to each family members riding ability, and enjoyed the private river float with truly exceptional guides. We do recommend a car to explore hikes or sights around the area and venture into Yellowstone. And yes, the weather can be somewhat unpredictable we got rained, hailed and snowed on in July... - and mosquitoes are plentiful. Just remember you are in the natural habitat of all sorts of wildlife.

Normally one would wait until after they have departed to write a review, however, quality & consistency compels me to weigh in early. I spent my career working for a company considered “Best in the Business” for customer satisfaction, so I brought a very high expectation to the ranch. From the initial phone calls & emails to the actual arrival at the ranch the attention to detail & satisfaction was a common theme. Now that we’ve been here a little over half way, the staff’s esprit de corps & the genuine drive to make sure that everyone, 7 to 71 in our case, is having fun & is getting to fulfill their own expectations of our time here. 2027 SEASON Our traditional ranch experience is designed as a six-night stay, with arrivals on Sunday and departures on Saturday, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the rhythm of ranch life. Select weeks *denoted follow alternate arrival and departure schedules. The all-inclusive rates are based on Low, Normal, and Peak Seasons, reflecting demand throughout the valley.
