Foreword
Lost Bear Gallery’s 2026 winter collection of new work by Herman Pekel has been curated to highlight the skill and diversity of this mercurial artist. Not concerned with overly complex statements or wordy theses, Pekel’s world is about the honing of technique, constant experimentation, and the creation of good art.
His remarkable versatility is encapsulated in this exhibition. Oils sit comfortably alongside watercolours. Naturalistic bush scenes contrast with busy urban streetscapes. Water cascades down rocky streams or reflects car brake lights. Light filters through eucalyptus leaves or shines out from a bustling café. Not to mention the improbable, self-referential still lifes.
Experience cultivated over decades and the love of painting is clearly evident in Herman Pekel’s art. Stillness and motion, nature and industry, sunlight and shadow, all coexist in perfect harmony.
