Welcome to Contemporary springART, proudly presented by Booth Real Estate and hosted by Loreto College Marryatville. Art has a remarkable capacity to move us. It invites us to see the world differently, to challenge our thinking and to discover beauty in unexpected places. At its best, it sparks conversation, deepens understanding and reminds us of our shared humanity. It is in this spirit that I warmly welcome you to this year's Contemporary springART. Now firmly established as one of Adelaide's most anticipated cultural events, Contemporary springART celebrates the extraordinary talent of South Australia's contemporary visual arts community. Featuring the work of more than 60 leading artists, the exhibition brings together creators, collectors, and art enthusiasts in a shared celebration of artistic excellence, craftsmanship and imagination. At Loreto College Marryatville, we believe the arts are central to a rich and meaningful education. They cultivate curiosity, imagination, and confidence, while encouraging young people to think creatively and engage thoughtfully with the world around them. Through Contemporary springART and our Artist-in-Residence Program, we are proud to foster these opportunities within our College community. This year's program also offers visitors the opportunity to experience the creative process firsthand. We are delighted to welcome acclaimed South Australian artist Tess Bartholomew for a live painting demonstration, followed by our Artist Panel Discussion with Feature Artist Sophie Hann, Feature Sculptor Sian Watson, Curator Marisha Matthews, and hosted by Paul Turley. Together, they will offer insights into their creative journeys and the inspiration behind their work.

As you explore the exhibition and this catalogue, I encourage you to immerse yourself in the remarkable works on display. Every artwork purchased and every ticket sold supports Loreto College Marryatville's Artist-inResidence Program, ensuring creativity continues to flourish within our College and inspiring the next generation of artists, and creative thinkers. LORETO ART DEPARTMENT

Artist in Residence Program Since its establishment in 1999, our Artist in Residence program has become an integral part of the Visual Arts curriculum, enriching students' learning through meaningful and sustained engagement with practising artists. Collaborating with contemporary artists allows students to gain genuine insights into creative practices, fostering an understanding of the processes, challenges, and opportunities that influence artistic work. The program was established with the support of a grant from Carclew Youth Arts. For more than 25 years, this vision has been sustained through the generous support of the Loreto College Marryatville Parents and Friends Association, enabling generations of students to engage directly with practising artists. Through these authentic learning experiences, students witness firsthand how artists generate ideas, experiment with materials, solve creative problems, and refine their work overtime. This insight deepens students’ understanding that artistic practice is an ongoing process of inquiry, reflection, and revision, extending their learning well beyond the classroom. In 2026, students are collaborating with Marisha Matthews, artist and curator of Contemporary springART, building upon the longstanding partnership between our program and contributing exhibiting artists.

For our current Year 11 and Year 12 students, the opportunity to be mentored and supported by Marisha Matthews has been invaluable. Through individual conversations, practical demonstrations and thoughtful feedback, Marisha encourages students to take creative risks, refine their technical skills and develop greater confidence in their own artistic decision-making. Her professional insight as both a practising artist and curator helps students strengthen the conceptual intentions behind their folios and resolved works, while recognising the importance of experimentation, persistence and reflection. As in past years, this sustained mentorship enables students to see themselves not simply as learners completing an assessment, but as emerging artists with distinctive ideas and an authentic personal voice. Students are also fortunate to experience springART, an exceptional survey exhibition featuring the work of some of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, giving them direct access to diverse artistic practices, ideas and professional pathways.

FEATURE ARTIST

Sophie Hann Sophie Hann is an Australian artist living on Kuarna Land, SA. She is a self taught artist although she studied on a scholarship for a semester at the New York Studio School. Hann received a Bachelor of Art from Flinders University. With a career spanning two decades, Sophie Hann’s accolades include the Dyason Bequest (AGNSW) and the Ruth Tuck Travelling Scholarship. She has been a finalist in major prizes such as the Heysen Prize for Landscape, the Lester Prize, the Portia Geach, Doug Moran, Brett Whitely Scholarship, Smallacombe Portrait Prize, Prospect Portrait Prize, the Fleurieu Prize, the John Fries Memorial Prize, the King’s School Art Prize, the Lloyd Rees Prize and the Alice Bale Memorial Award. Hann has received multiple grants and residencies including the Nancy Fairfax Artist Residency and the BigCi residency.

Sophie Hann’s primary interest is in human ecology- the relationship between humans and their environments and environmental ethics, which explores the moral relationship between humans and the natural world, including our responsibilities towards the environment and its resources. Animals, people and natural world features strongly in her work.

FEATURE SCULPTOR

Sian Watson Sian Watson is an Adelaide based artist who explores the relationships between humans, animals and their shared environments. Watson captures movement and narrative in her ambiguous forms, primarily made from steel and concrete. Having completed her Bachelor of Visual Arts (First Class Honours) at ANU in 2015, her practice now spans studio-based works and public art commissions. She has exhibited work in Australia, Canada and the USA and was the recipient of the 2020 Sculpture By the Sea Clitheroe Emerging Artist Mentor Award. EXHIBITION CURATOR

Marisha Matthews Curator of Loreto Contemporary springArt since 2022, Marisha is also a South Australian artist working mostly in oils. Her paintings are lush and rich creations from everyday life including glass and silver objects but also ordinary garden plants and native species. The Family Silver collection includes inherited objects and elaborately patterned block printed fabric gathered from India. Her recent exhibition Retrograde, at Art Images Gallery explored the Autumn toned accessories of the 1960s and 70s. These still life works include both vintage treasures and psychedelic fabric designs. Marisha has worked in both art department in film and the restoration of heritage homes, and spent many years creating Roman style mosaics and murals.

Artist’s Panel Discussion Saturday 2:00pm Three artists discuss their practice and the work that they are exhibiting at Contemporary springART 2026. Each of the artists will reveal what makes their work a unique expression and response to experience, as well as finding common ground in creative practice.

Heather Croall AM Heather Croall AM is an experienced CEO & Director known as a bold visionary in the cultural sector who delivers innovative programs, new audiences & organisational growth. Under her leadership, every organisation Heather has run has seen an increase in turn over, delivered growth in ticket sales, audiences and profile. Heather has a reputation for innovative projects, major events, visitor attraction, generating income, delivering excellent management of community engagement and stakeholder relations. With an international career in multimedia, Film, TV and the Arts, Heather has a strong track record in implementing organisational change, capacity building as well as curating/commissioning award winning exhibitions, performances & experiences. Heather is Director at Carrick Hill. She was the Director & CEO at the Adelaide Fringe for 11 years and doubled annual ticket sales from 500,000 to 1 million. Before that, Heather grew audiences exponentially at Sheffield Docfest in the UK which she led for a decade. Heather has produced and directed numerous award-winning documentaries in her 30 year long film making career. In 2025 Heather was honoured with the Adelaide University Alumni Award and in 2024 Heather was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia. In 2023 Heather graduated from MIT Sloan and was awarded Person Of the Year by SALife Awards. In 2022, Heather was named Festival “CEO of the Year” by the CEO Monthly Magazine.

Heather won the “Leadership Award” at the 2020 SA Woman Awards. Heather graduated from the Governor's Leadership Foundation (GLF) in 2017. She sits on the board of Committee for Adelaide, the Inspiring SA steering committee and is a mentor at the Business School of the UniSA's Executive Partner Program. Heather has received numerous accolades for her leadership and contribution to the film and cultural sectors, including an Honorary Doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University, the 2015 Inspiration Award and the 2021 Superhero Award. She was also named the 2013 Ambassador of Women’s Film and served on the 2012 Sundance Jury.

Alison Arnold

Working in acrylics, Amanda brings small snapshots to vibrant life. The miniature canvas is an invitation to pause and delight in the tiny moments. It is an expression of joy in little things. Amanda holds a National Diploma of Fine Arts (cum laude) from the Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa.

Driller Jet Armstrong is an Adelaide Hills artist and founder of Daubism. Since 1991 he has transformed rescued landscape paintings through deliberate interventions that explore authorship, memory, ownership and place. A BA (Hons) graduate, Armstrong exhibits widely and challenges conventional ideas about originality in contemporary Australian art.

Alison is a studio potter based in the Adelaide Hills, creating functional and sculptural ceramics layered with printmaking, illustration and vibrant colour. Inspired by birds and plants in her garden, her work draws on textiles, folk art and historical surface design to explore pattern, ornament and natural forms.

Nicole Ayliffe graduated with 1st class Honors from the South Australian School of Art, University of South Australia in 2005. Her work has been collected in Museums including The Glasmuseum; Germany, Octavia Hill’s Museum; England, The Toledo Museum of Art, USA, The Parliament House Art Collection; Canberra and the National Glass Collection at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery.

Sue creates from her Adelaide home-studio, mostly focussing on outback landscape. For Sue, her work in encaustic (beeswax, damar & pigments) captures rhythms, patterns & colours referencing isolated Australian scapes. Encaustic work has a dreamy finish, a deep luminosity and can be buffed to a deep sheen.

I am an illustrator, and have been for most of my life. While I sometimes fantasise about creating masterpieces that grace gallery walls, I find I am drawn to telling stories through my pictures, which ultimately end up in books or magazines instead…. Not a bad result after all!

Tess is an abstract landscape painter and muralist based in the Adelaide Hills. The Emerging Artist at last year’s Contemporary springART show, her work explores connection, belonging and individuality, often using trees as symbolic forms, she draws inspiration from her surroundings, celebrating the South Australian landscape in her unique, colourful way.

Nicole Black is an Adelaidebased visual artist working across fine art, murals, and commercial projects. Inspired by landscapes, flora, memory, and light, her mixed-media works balance detail and abstraction to capture emotional impressions of place. Alongside exhibiting, Nicole also teaches workshops, sharing her passion for creative exploration and process.

Bill is represented in 5 galleries in the Eastern states. He sells locally, as well as in Asia and Europe. He is also being commissioned to paint in Denmark. He is abstract, figurative artist and works solely on original idea.

Eden Boucher is an Australianborn multidisciplinary artist whose vivid abstract works explore themes of power and femininity. Her artistic practice spans printmaking, textiles, and graphic design, each piece reflecting her deep love of geometry, shape, colour and direct forms.

Donovan Christie’s work celebrates the nostalgic character and charm of everyday-life, those oftenoverlooked moments, places, and objects that quietly shape our collective memory. Through realist paintings and installations, he documents contemporary Australia’s cultural relics and urban landscape, preserving everyday icons as a visual archive that unlocks shared memories across generations.

Fifi Clifford is an emerging oil painter. She is drawn to curated and collected objects, interested in how they relate through colour, composition and play. Her paintings bring them into new arrangements, drawing out their character and visual presence.

Dr Daniel Connell, born and works on Kaurna Land. He is a Creative Australia Arts Leaders Alumni; exhibited in Kochi Beinnale contemporary art; teaches painting, drawing and theory at Adelaide Central School of Art since 2014; has a Doctorate in socially engaged art, portraiture and representation; is a UNESCO affiliate artist; and affiliate researcher University of Glasgow school of education.

South Australian painter Lee Coulthard begins his process with stream-of-consciousness writing, then develops systems, formulas and numerical colour-coded data sets to bring his textural elements to life. He is an award-winning artist and has been a finalist in numerous Australian art prizes.

Helga is a former art teacher.

Kathy Doley is an artist and educator based in Adelaide. She finds inspiration in the natural world depicting Australian Florals, not with stark realism but with creative energy and colour. She is represented in local and regional galleries.

Olivia Dryden creates contemporary botanical jewellery that captures the delicate beauty of Australian flora. Using traditional casting techniques, she preserves flowers and plant forms in precious metals, transforming fleeting natural moments into lasting wearable art. Her handcrafted designs often incorporate freshwater pearls and semiprecious stones, celebrating nature’s beauty and detail.

Tahnae Davidson-Bartley lm a Kullilli and Wiradjuri woman and textile artist. Im influenced by childhood experiences in the NT where l learnt how to weave from elders. My focus is linking the past to the present to convey family history and connections to Country through the use of raffia and garden waste.

She has done additional studies in Sculpture SA School of Art: Central School of Art in Norwood. She recently exhibited 2023 Marion Community Centre; 2024 The Gallery, St Peter's 2023-2026.

My love of botanical and natural history imagery stems from a profound sense of wonder at creation and an artistic temperament that favours documentary realism over imagination. I have never much desired to create new worlds but rather to capture the miracles I see everywhere in the one we’re in.

Working with recycled materials has its challenges as most pieces are chipped or broken and my colour palate is limited.

Claudia’s work combines fine art, storytelling and technology, shaped by a career in iconic film campaigns and fine art retouching. She creates photographic paintings that blend photography, illustration and digital techniques to produce richly layered, cinematic images exploring memory, emotion and transformation.

Brad Holland

Hamish Fleming is a self-taught realist painter whose work blends together the approaches and techniques of traditional realism with far more contemporary subject matter. Working solely from life, his recent work mostly centres around nocturnal landscapes and quietly dark yet intimate still lifes and interiors.

In 1985 Quentin graduated from the South Australian College of Advanced Education with a Degree in Industrial Design followed by an Associate Degree in Visual Art from Adelaide Central School of Art, in 2020. His artworks are inspired by forms and patterns found in nature.

Brad Holland is a visual artist based on Kaurna land near Port Adelaide and has won the 2021 Bluethumb founders award and the 2025 Gallery M contemporary art prize people’s choice award. Using hard-edge abstraction techniques, Holland creates immersive geometric works exploring colour, perception, structure, and contemplative space.

I hope you enjoy my quirky art as much as I have loved creating Clara.

I experience a deep connection to rivers, whether I am running along the Torrens, on holiday at the Murray, or swimming with my brother in the Murrumbidgee. So much of the Australian landscape is revealed in the reflections. I paint in oils in a contemporary impressionist technique.

Annabel Hume is a ceramic sculptor who is particularly interested in lesser represented animals, medieval art and eastern European folklore.

Cassie Hutchinson is the artist behind POTTY MOUTH, a selftaught Adelaide painter known for her bold, joyful botanical artworks and large-scale murals. Drawing inspiration from nature, colour, and community, her work celebrates beauty, connection, and creativity, transforming everyday spaces into vibrant, immersive environments filled with life and optimism.

As a lover of colour and pattern, Alison’s work sparks joy for her collectors. Working mainly in acrylics and mixed media on canvas and linen, Alison draws inspiration from floral and fauna. Alison is a multi modal creative who also makes earrings and runs creative workshops in Adelaide.

Josh Juett is an Adelaidebased artist working in painting and sculpture. Drawing from surrealism and Dutch still-life painting, his practice explores identity, memory, and personal mythology through symbolic objects, combining technical realism with dreamlike imagery to investigate the relationship between perception, agency, and selfhood.

Emma Klau is a South Australian glass bower who produces high end designer functional glass ware. My art work sits in the realm of super realism!

Annabel Lapsys My recent work explores earthy tones and layered surfaces through various materials and heavily worked paint. Using my hands, I guide delicate fabric into fluid folds as the piece takes shape, focusing on what is built up over time, leaving some parts hidden and others exposed through the process.

Having painted professionally for over 20 years I find myself exploring contemporary expressive landscapes that at times border on the abstract. This leaves my work to the viewers interpretation of my unique style.

These are imagined places. The clouds are moving and may clear or close in. The land is barely there. The water holds still and time feels suspended. There is a tension between the movement and the stillness. I hope the viewer will step into that moment and imagine their own story.

Cat Leonard is an Adelaide based artist known for her vibrant, textured paintings, expressive portraits and loose energetic style. She also teaches art classes and workshops in various venues around Adelaide, and maintains an active online presence. She's proudly a "work in progress" always painting, experimenting and sharing her creative journey.

I am an Adelaide artist painting with oil on canvas and the concept of identity is the foundation of my work. Since leaving my architecture career of more than fifteen years in 2024, I have focussed more on painting and have regularly exhibited my work. I observe our complicated cultural context with honesty in an attempt to understand who we are as Australians, humans and who I am myself.

The Seasick is an art collective co-created by Adelaide based Artist Elaheh Mahdavi and Shahsavar (Iran) based Arman Mahdavi in 2023, where they engage in various visual arts projects including painting, illustration, and filmmaking.

A SA based visual artist, working in oils. Her practice draws attention to the fall of light on objects, transparency, surface and reflection. Her application of paint is both painterly and textured. Her subjects are lush and rich creations from everyday life. Fruit, flowers, glass and silver objects, patterned fabrics, succulent plants, are all treated generously with paint revealing otherworldliness and luminance.

Inspired by nature and informed by Japanese aesthetics, I work primarily with tissue and textured papers to create layered collage works. Through colour, pattern, texture and repetition, my practice reflects an interpreted world shaped by memory, observation and atmosphere.

Sue is an award winning photographer and writer whose works are largely influenced by world travel, observations of urban form and her intrigue of human nature. Sue creates from a place of wonder and follows a meticulous process to bring her images to life. Sue’s work has been published internationally.

Cristina Metelli, an Adelaidebased artist, creates vibrant abstract paintings inspired by nature. Her work explores the profound connection between human lives and the natural world, delving into themes of belonging and the healing power of the environment. Through bold colors and gestural applications, she aims to evoke emotional and sensorial responses, inviting viewers to experience nature's intricate beauty.

Since completing her Visual Art PhD, Sue has been writing a book about place studies for arts in health. There are landscapes, atmospheres and lived experiences that stay in our hearts, long after we have left a setting. Simple gestures of memorable goodwill are documented in these current paintings.

Vibrant and intimate, my paintings explore beauty and strength to create conversations about positive social change. Australian flora or people who do great things are my subjects. I give Australian Wildflowers centre stage ‘Painting small flowers big’ in order to inspire people to SEE native plants and use them in their gardens and connect with nature on our doorsteps. Connecting with nature helps us connect with self.

Swapna Namboodiri is an environmental artist creating nature inspired assemblages, installations, and sculptural works using self-developed techniques that transform existing materials. Grounded in sustainability, her practice celebrates organic textures and patterns, drawing inspiration from the natural world to create richly layered mixed-media artworks that invite contemplation and connection.

Katie is an emerging oil painter who graduated from the Adelaide Central School of Art in 2023. Her work explores dreamlike and mysterious moods through scenes of light, colour and reflections from an altered perspective.

Metal particularly intrigues me with its ability to juxtapose the robust nature of the medium with the capacity to produce soft, organic forms has became my main focus. The natural world inspires everything I create and I particularly like to collect small found pieces, from seaweed to seeds.

My entries in the exhibition are oil landscapes. My art is mainly abstract. I love loose landscapes and I decided to take my abstract art into the landscape field. I am pleased with them and think that I will do more. My abstract act is still a huge part of who I am as an artist but am still evolving and wanting to challenge myself.

Jane has been a finalist 9 times in the Waterhouse Art Prize at the South Australian Museum. Jane’s artworks hang in private residences from Park Lane, Mayfair, London to New York, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia-wide. Jane won second prize for her bronze sculpture in the South Australian Museum’s Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, 2009 – sculpture & objects category.

Greer Provis is an Adelaide artist who works from her coastal Marino studio. Renowned for her realistic acrylic paintings, she creates highly detailed works showcasing majestic beachscapes and elegant stilllife floral blooms. Her works blend natural beauty and timeless sophistication, producing captivating artworks loved by her collectors.

Victoria believes the infinite beauty of nature is only revealed when painting outdoors. “I want the painting to feel spontaneous and of the moment. Brushstrokes to be instinctive, spirited and textural. This is easier to achieve outdoors where there is a greater urgency because of the constraints of time, light and weather. I strive to paint with an observant eye and a loose hand!”

Ian Routledge has spent 30 years as a commercial photographer, mastering light, composition, and the discipline of a brief. Now turning that eye toward personal work, he explores art photography on his own terms — trading client expectations for creative freedom.

Through gestural mark-making and a bold, expressive colour palette, my work merges mid‑century design principles with contemporary abstraction. Each piece is shaped by a fascination with seasonal transitions, where geometric forms and recurring patterns intersect with transparent layers. By revealing light and shadow within these overlapping elements, I create a sense of depth that invites viewers to pause, look closer & experience the artwork beyond its surface.

Nicola Semmens is a South Australian oil painter whose work bridges landscape, still life, and mythology. Combining traditional painting techniques with contemporary themes, she explores transformation, memory, environmental change, and the relationship between the seen and unseen. Her paintings weave observation, symbolism, and narrative to create evocative and imaginative worlds.

Anna’s sculptures are derived from sketches of the natural world around her. She uses laser cutting to transform her sketches into larger specimens that are embellished with copper birds or insects that are hand cut using jewellery techniques. To finish the sculptures are acid treated then placed in the garden.

Liana Vargas is an oil painter and tutor based in Hahndorf, South Australia. After a 25-year career as a professional dancer, she studied visual art at the Adelaide Central School of Art. The emotional connection central to her performance career continues to inform her portrait practice, which explores warmth, authenticity, and human connection.

Jacob Williams is an artist in Adelaide applying historical oil painting techniques, studying masters like Diego Velasquez and John Singer Sargent. With traditional and textured realism, he aims to capture the mood and sensitivity of classic portraiture.

Dan Withey is an Adelaidebased artist, born in Birmingham (1986) and migrated to Australia in 2004. A neurodivergent migrant, his practice explores the inbetween spaces of culture, identity, and perception. With 35+ solo exhibitions, his current research project examines how consumercapitalist societies appear to those living outside their frameworks.

Elizabeth Wojciak expresses her creativity through abstracted figuration, using paint as a physical medium to create pieces that evoke emotions, reactions, and memories. Elizabeth’s intuitive approach to art aims to capture the complex nature of nostalgia. Utilising colour, texture, and shape, she invites viewers to engage with her perspective and reflect on their own experiences.

Casseyanne's paintings are inspired by the story of two sisters travelling from SA to NT. The two sisters move away from home, big sister urging little sister to keep going as they travel through sandhills and waterholes. This story is passed down from her grandma and is painted by Casseyanne, her mum and sisters.
