Volume 24 - 12 August, 2014 Dear Parents and Students This week, our Year 8s are embarking on an exciting challenge over two days that represents the positive direction our College is taking in terms of cross curricular projects, learning and, most significantly, thinking. The Year 8 STEM Challenge has a focus on engaging our girls in an area (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) that has been historically seen as a male dominated domain. When I speak with tertiary representatives and industry stakeholders, it is evident that the sector is actively seeking females to pursue careers in the STEM field as they bring to the table an added dimension of perspective, creativity, ingenuity, and professional excellence that has previously been underrepresented. A common theme I hear is that the industry needs more women in roles at all organisation levels, but especially in leadership positions, to ensure a productive and secure future in Australia. This is a time that brings fantastic career opportunities for our young Loreto Women should they discover ability or find interest in the STEM area. Some key objectives of the Year 8 STEM Challenge happening this week are:
Promoting the strong links between Science, Mathematics, Design and Information Technology in the curriculum and further developing abilities in these areas within a common real-world context Fostering Visible Thinking, Habits of Mind, creativity, problem solving, critical reflection, teamwork and communication skills Developing spatial visualisation and manipulative skills with specialised equipment Allowing our girls to have fun while developing and sharing ideas in order to produce a tangible product from their learning experience Providing opportunities for the girls to explore their talents and interests in the STEM area as an Enduring Pursuit
The girls are working in small groups with the objective of building a scale replica of a bridge that can be used as a pedestrian link between the science laboratories and the new building currently under construction using set materials such as “paddle pop sticks”, glue, string and cardboard. Students in each group have defined roles: Engineer, Designer, Quantity Surveyor, Construction Manager, Project Manager and Spokeswoman/Recorder. The process includes:
Research on scientific principles, statics, forces Collaboration and planning Presentation/sharing of ideas Engineering and designing Drawing/drafting visual representation Geometry, measurements and conversions Calculation of material quantity and cost Keeping a digital project log Construction, critical reflection and refinement
To add an extra incentive to the challenge, each group is being judged according to their bridge’s maximum load capacity, aesthetic appeal, creativity in design, construction costs and build quality. The teamwork displayed by each group is also being considered in the judging process. Sparkling medals and much-coveted certificates will be awarded on merit in these criteria.

Inspiring our students to explore possibilities in the STEM field is something that I am particularly passionate about and I have been absolutely delighted with the “buzz” of activity, excitement and visible thinking that our Year 8s have been immersed in while undertaking this project. I look forward with anticipation to the many more innovative cross curricular projects being planned in other learning areas and year groups for the coming semesters here at Loreto. “There is no such difference between men and women that women may not do great things, as we have seen by the example of many saints who have done great things. Art Department 8RED have been engaged in exploring portraits that reveal identity. Their first task was to work with digital images of themselves which were altered in Photoshop. These photographic images were then developed using paint and collage. These tasks have developed a range of skills from working with computer in the production of Art to rendering a form with paint and tonal variation. Year 11 Literary Tour The 11F English class undertook a tour of a different kind to uncover some of the secrets of Brisbane’s past, particularly those from the ‘underbelly’ of Brisbane. “I didn’t really understand Brisbane’s ‘dark’ past before this excursion or the attempt to ‘rejuvenate’ and dismiss this ‘dark’ past…” “I never realised how much interesting history lies on every street and in every building… I thought Brisbane lacked the rich history of Sydney and Melbourne… ” “I found the excursion fascinating, very different from previous excursions. The part I enjoyed most was the visit to Boggo Road Goal as the guide brought the building to life – the people who spent years here incarcerated for a variety of crimes, the escapes, the poor treatment prisoners received and especially the conditions they endured.” “Aspects of Brisbane that I noticed reflected a hollow / shallow past particularly once you look below the surface and ignore the superficial.” “The Police Museum was a wealth of information…from the presentation we were given to the storyboards of actual crimes….even the detailed forensic work required in each case...” “The city provided very fertile ground for people observation….just walking and taking note of people and listening to their conversations….I noticed lots of different details I normally ignore when in the city…” 11F English

Debating News The debating community at Loreto is very proud of our 10.1 and 11.1 teams who have made it through to the semi-finals of the competition. This means that both teams are in the top eight in our corner of the world! Co-Curricular Music Help Needed! Each year the Music Support Group raises between $8,000 and $10,000 to fund the College’s Music Scholarship program. This program immediately and directly benefits 25 to 30 students each year by subsidising music tuition fees. However, the long term effect of these scholarships is much more far reaching. It is no exaggeration to suggest that the program in reality benefits every girl who plays music at Loreto by allowing us to balance our ensemble instrumentation! Unfortunately, the MSG currently finds itself without anyone who is able to fill the role of Secretary. We normally have two Secretaries who share the duties of this role (mainly taking of minutes, emailing communications to members, and receiving correspondence). If there is anyone who is able to help with the role of Secretary, I would be thrilled to hear from you and can be contacted at the Music Office either by email (music@loreto.qld.edu.au) or phone (3394 9915). QCMF Help The Catholic Colleges Music Festival (August 14-17) is an event run to benefit all Catholic Schools and Colleges in Queensland and New South Wales. Each year it is a real focus performance valued by all our Loreto Ensembles, where we are able to play in public and receive feedback from expert adjudicators. And though featuring more than 11000 student performances in just 4 days, the event is run almost entirely by volunteers! Loreto College and Music Support Group would like to support this event by strongly encouraging all Loreto parents with an interest in musical excellence to volunteer for a single shift. You could work in a canteen, sell tickets or programs at the door, assist in moving stands and chairs backstage at one of the six performance venues or just help direct guests around the College. All Loreto groups will wear full academic uniform, with blazers and 70 denier navy blue stockings (NOT socks and no hats are not required) except the following groups: Sorelle/Exit Stage Left/Big Band please wear all black with new performance uniform shirts as per recent performance at the St Catherine’s Fete; Guitar Ensembles 1 & 2 please wear all black as per normal. on stage so please do not arrive at the last minute as you may miss your daughter’s performance entirely! Concert Band Two As your arrival time is scheduled for 4:03 pm on Thursday 14 August, Loreto will be organising a bus to transport you to the Festival directly after school. Students should bring their uniform, instrument and music to school on Thursday morning and then meet Mrs Baldwin in the MWC Mezzanine directly following afternoon homeroom. It is expected that parents will collect their daughters from Villanova College after their 4:45 pm performance is completed. Clarinet Ensemble Two As your performance is scheduled for during the day on Friday 15 August, the College has organised transport both to and from the venue. Students will return to school in time for regular afternoon homeroom, and so will be able to make all normal after school commitments/transport arrangements. Primary Music Camp – Concert Band One’s and String Ensemble’s Next commitment is the Primary Music Camp on Sunday 24 August. This event has been in the calendar all year as one of our ensemble performances and is also an important commitment we have made to our community. All members of these two groups are expected to make themselves available for the afternoon concert AND as many students as possible are asked to help with another session at some stage during the day. We are very understanding of assessment, particularly for senior girls – and know that there will be some Year 11 and 12 students for whom the concert is the only thing they can attend on the day. For the majority of students, especially in the younger year levels, I am sure you can spare the time to come to one session to help out. Students in each group have been asked to email RM Langford and nominate which of the following sessions they can attend: Session 1 – 8:30 am to 10:30 am; Session 2 – 10:45 am to 12:30 pm; Session 3 – 1:15 pm to 3:00 pm. Please be aware that we can’t have ALL students at Session 3 leading into the concert so if you can be available in the morning that would be very much appreciated! Science Club Members of the Science Club have been developing solar cookers as projects that teach them about mathematics of parabolas, insulation properties, laws of reflections etc. Their projects were demonstrated at the Open Day. Our thanks to Lucia Palacios and Shestha Chand who very ably demonstrated how these devices could bake cupcakes, cook pasta and poach eggs. Thanks to all the members who have worked on these devices. Queensland Schools’ Cup Volleyball Queensland Schools’ Cup Volleyball The Loreto Open A Volleyball team travelled to Toowoomba to participate in the Queensland Volleyball Schools’ Cup, which was held from Friday 8 August to Sunday 10 August. This year the team competed in the very competitive Open Girls Division 2 and after a promising start with two wins on Friday, unfortunately lost two, three set cliff hanger games on Saturday to drop out of medal contention. The team achieved a final result of 11 th out of 18. The members of the Open A team are Mia Page (C), Claudia Miotti, Erin Stafford, Sarah Toohey, Georgia Johnson, Julia Logan, Kate Hutchins, Gabryela Sellars, Kate O’Sullivan and Lucy Nielson. These girls approached every game with great spirit, determination and respect for their opposition and were truly outstanding representatives of the College. The girls greatly appreciated all of the parent supporters who were able to make it to many of the matches over the weekend. In particular, I would like to thank Meg and Bob Logan, Mrs Anna Nielson, Theresa and Craig Hutchins and Siobhan Stafford for all of their supervising, catering and transportation over the three days. A special thank you to Odette and Mark Page as Mia is the last of their four daughters to go through the College, all of whom have represented Loreto in Open A Volleyball over the years. Their support and encouragement of the volleyball program and constant attendance at games has been greatly appreciated and I am not sure if their record of participation will ever be bettered! Sports Department Athletics Squad 2014 Athletics training is encouraged for athletes on Tuesday afternoon at QEII. A bus will transport the girls to and from the stadium. All girls must register their name at the Sports Office for a seat on the bus. The last session is 19 August 2014. There is also Relay training on every Sunday at QE11, Nathan. All 100m runners are expected to attend the session from 3.00pm to 4.30pm. This week, 17 August, it will start at 2.00pm and finish at 3.30pm. The last Lead Up Athletic Meet is on Monday 18 August 2014. A bus will take the girls to UQ Athletics Centre, Sir William MacGregor Drive, ST LUCIA. Competitors will need to be collected at the venue after the meet. The meet will start at 4.00pm and finish at approximately 6.00pm. CaSSSA Athletics Loreto College will be taking up to 95 athletes to compete in the Catholic Secondary School Girls Sport competition on Monday 26 August 2014. The athletes will catch a bus at 7.15 am to QE11 on the day of the carnival. A letter will be distributed to the Athletics Team including program details next week. The Year 11 students will be spectators on the day of the carnival. The students will be transported out to the QE11 Athletics track at the ANZ stadium. The students will leave school directly after assembly and return to school around 2.45pm to take the normal buses home. School will finish at normal time for all students including the athletes. All students are expected to be there and wear full school uniform including their hat. It is strongly advised that the girls bring a packed lunch for the day. If you have any further enquiries please don’t hesitate to contact the Year 11 Coordinator or Mrs Meg Stevens in the Sport Office. There will be an Athletics Squad breakfast on Monday 18 August at 7.00 am outside the MWC. All squad members are welcome. A special thank you to the coaches and umpires for their hard work and support during the competition. Well done to the Loreto teams who put up a great performance and a special thankyou to the Captains of each team and Loreto Netball captains, Mia Page and Melissa Roberts. Calling all Loreto Businesses! On 19 October, Loreto brings you the ‘Live & Wired Music Festival’, an afternoon of wining, dining, jazz, soul and rock on the Deshon Oval. Businesses connected with our Loreto community, such as real estate agents, food and beverage suppliers, and retailers are invited to submit an expression of interest, to display their business at the festival. Business categories will be determined by ‘first-in-best-dressed’ and are imagined to include a 3 x 3 metre stand, logo displays and suitable promotional material. P&F News Support for school projects The P&F is considering helping fund projects including heating the swimming pool, furniture for a Japanese-style garden, seating in the Undercroft and new projection screens for the Mary Ward Centre. P&F members agreed in principle at our meeting last week to support these projects using the proceeds of our fund raising and will make final decisions when quotes and further information are received. We had more than $38,000 at the end of July as a result of parent levies and funds from social events such as dances and dinners. You can also expect an email from the P&F in the near future on a special event for parents and nominations for the upcoming AGM. The meeting also heard a report from Deputy Principal Helen Carty and discussions about Live & Wired Festival, Father’s Day Breakfast, Open Day, and an invitation to the new Federal Member for Griffith Terri Butler. The P&F are excited to announce the introduction of our new email account. From now, all P&F correspondence can be emailed to pandf@loreto.qld.edu.au . Families will receive updates on important matters regarding the Association. Be assured the Association will be judicious and communicate with parents only as the need arises. Parent Forum | Sunday 24 August 9.30 - 11am | 'Mulwith' As a P&F we are aware how important it is that our objectives are aligned with Loreto's so we can continue to play an effective and support role. As the College is in the midst of a strategic planning process we believe it is timely to review our objectives and consider how they need to be refined. We will be conducting a Parent Forum over coffee and croissants on Sunday 24 August starting at 9.30am. The Forum will be held at the top of the Mulwith building and will finish no later than 11am. We warmly invite you to attend, soak up the great view from Mulwith, enjoy a friendly chat and provide input into how we can best support the Loreto community. The Forum is being held on a Sunday so we can hear from as many parents as possible. RSVPs are essential for catering purposes. Please email your name and number of people attending to Trish Willing by Thursday 21 August.
P&F AGM As the time nears for our annual general meeting, we invite nominations for the positions of President, Vice-President (2), Treasurer and Secretary. You are warmly invited to attend the AGM. The meeting to determine who will sit on the committee for 2015 will held on Tuesday 2 September at 7.00pm in Room 605 on the bottom floor of the Gonzaga Barry Building. Year 9 Parent Volunteers – Open Day I would like to say a very big thank you to the following wonderful Year 9 parents, Leanne Stitchell and her sister Trish, Allison Dwyer, Marina Weir, Esther Dabinett, Megan Djelovic, Jasmin McCosker, Sam Young, Fin Boyce and Anne Pattison who assisted with the Open Day Morning Tea.
