Sarah Pettiford This leads me to one of the greatest philosophies that our school upholds – one that if elected as School Captain for 2012, I will strive to continue. This attribute is Mary Ward’s open circle of friends. It is through this inclusive belief of always leaving the circle open (along with striving to live Mary Ward’s virtues of felicity, verity, sincerity, justice and freedom), that I became a part of the Loreto family. Over the past four years, I have been actively involved in many co-curricular activities, throwing myself into every opportunity afforded me, ranging from sporting carnivals, school teams, drama presentations, Mary Ward Connect and many other cultural aspects of the College life. While I always put a hundred percent into my school work and aim to achieve my best, I also enjoy having fun with my friends and teachers. It would be a great honour and privilege to be your School Captain and to build a sense of unity to ensure we “dream and pursue in Loreto one two”. We have “remained together as one in Loreto one one”, and I would love to “lead you through in Loreto one two.”
Nina Waddell From the moment I stepped into Loreto College Coorparoo one thing was blatantly obvious to me: this school possesses a network, a sisterhood that you can’t find anywhere else. I’ve felt supported, encouraged and cared for the whole time I’ve been here and it is this community spirit that is responsible for continuously producing strong, tenacious and driven young women. Another thing that was immediately apparent to me was that in my time here at Loreto, I would want to give back. I would want to give back to this community that has given so much to me, through being the best senior leader I can be. Everyone has differing views on what it means to be a leader, and what good leadership is, but to me, there is no stereotype. Leadership can shape a person, just as a person’s unique ideas and personality can shape her leadership. For me, leadership is not about being put on a pedestal, or revelling in the glory and praise a badged position can bring you, but instead being the driving force behind creating an amazing group of 135 leaders who will hopefully create the best 2012 for everyone here at Loreto and leave a lasting legacy that will make people remember the seniors of 2012. People say the best leaders are the ones who drive a group to believe that they can be successful, so that when the dust settles, and their goals achieved, they can say “We did it ourselves.”

As you can see, Loreto’s leadership is in good hands for 2012. In the coming weeks, further positions will be announced as the girls select Council Leaders, SRC Leaders and other representative positions. It is indeed an exciting time for the College but one tinged with a touch of sadness as we begin to farewell our beautiful Year 12’s. Let us offer this prayer in thanks for all they have given. Gracious God, We give heartfelt thanks for the gifts of love, laughter and leadership given by the class of 2011. As we spend our last weeks together, may they sense our pride and joy in their achievements, our gratitude and appreciation for all they have given and our blessings and hopes for their futures. We pray that they are able to give their best with confidence during their final exams. May their efforts be justly rewarded. This we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen. PROPOSED CHANGES TO SCHOOL HOLIDAYS IN QUEENSLAND As you would be aware, the Queensland Government has proposed changes to the school holidays to be introduced in 2012. These changes, if introduced, may mean some minor changes to our previously published dates. I apologise, in advance, for any late changes we might make to our dates for 2012, but I know you will understand that this is unfortunately beyond our control. STAFF NEWS It gives me great pleasure to advise that Mrs Kerry Williams commences her return to work this week after her most serious accident earlier this year. Her recovery has been described as ‘miraculous’, so we give heartfelt thanks to all for your love, support and most of all for your prayers. We give thanks and praise for God’s great love and care.
I wish also to advise that after 34 years teaching at Loreto, Mr Cutts will be retiring at year’s end. We give profound thanks for his many years of dedicated and loyal service, especially for his long period as the much loved and respected Year 9 Co-ordinator . He will be missed. We wish him every blessing in retirement.
CONDOLENCES We offer prayers and sympathies to the family of Anastasia O’Brien (Year 9) on the passing of her grandfather, Tom O’Brien (who was the brother of Sr Celia O’Brien IBVM who taught at Loreto in the 1970’s). May he rest in loving and eternal peace. Amen.

Drama News Creative Arts Week Creative Arts Week celebrations continue into this week with the Year 10 Collage Drama Performance Evenings. Last night five groups from both Drama classes presented their Collage Drama Performances to a supportive audience of family and friends. The girls’ dramatic works were very well received. We wish the remaining four groups the very best of luck for tonight’s performances. We also would like to take the opportunity to thank the Technical Crew for devoting their own time over the past few days to provide technical support for the shows. We would like to make special mention of Aishling Briody, this year’s Technical Council leader, who provided great leadership to the rest of her crew, including the Year 11 crew members. The performance evening commences at 7pm on the Mary Ward Centre Stage. Entry is via gold coin donation for adults. Students are free. Last Thursday lunch time the annual ‘30 seconds of Fame Talent Quest’ was held in the Mary Ward Centre. Congratulations to all of the finalists and to the overall winner Shannon Becquigny. Shannon won a $25.00 JB Hi-Fi Voucher. A huge thank you to the Senior Drama Council and Miss Grills for organising this event.
The 2012 Jean Trundle Memorial Theatre Bursary The Jean Trundle Memorial Theatre Bursary is awarded annually to a young Queenslander in memory of the late Jean Trundle, a founder of the Brisbane Arts Theatre and a well-known Speech and Drama Teacher in Brisbane for many years. The $1000 Bursary is designed to assist young people intending to make a career in some field of Theatre. Any Year 12 Drama student who is interested in applying for the 2012 Jean Trundle Memorial Theatre Bursary needs to collect an application form from Mrs Radvan. Applications close on Wednesday 30 November. Entrants will be contacted in the New Year for an interview and the Bursary winner will be announced in early February.
Year 12 Drama The Drama Department would like to wish the Year 12 Drama students the best of luck as they present their final piece of assessment this week which brings their Senior Drama studies to closure. The girls are presenting work in the comedy genre, celebrating the virtue of Felicity which is a most appropriate way to finish celebrating their course of study. This year’s cohort of Drama students have been an absolute delight to teach. We wish them all the best for the future.

Grease We are looking forward to our first gathering as a whole ensemble this Friday afternoon 4th November for our whole cast script read-through. To make life easier for everyone, we have amended the times required for this read-through. Instead of the original scheduled time of 4pm-7pm, it will now be from 3.45pm-5.30pm at Villanova’s Hanrahan Theatre. This read-through is compulsory for all leads. All members of the chorus, stage orchestra and dancing chorus are more than welcome and indeed, are encouraged to attend. You will need to bring your own afternoon tea and arrange your own transport to Villanova. If there are any students who will have trouble getting to Villanova by 3.45pm could they please see Mr Swanson, Mrs Radvan or Mrs Nielson as soon as possible.

English News Shake and Stir Theatre Company have recently come to the school to enrich the understanding of our Years 9 and 10 students about Shakespeare. The Year 10s viewed a performance of extracts of ‘Romeo and Juliet’, which they are currently studying and the Year 9s were introduced to extracts from ‘The Tempest’, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘Macbeth’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The girls were entertained as well as informed about the antics of some memorable Shakespearean characters. Celebrations also occurred when Michael Bauer, a popular Queensland author, who worked last term with the Year 11s, judged the girls’ short stories. Congratulations to the following girls who received Highly Commended: Hannah Fowler, Sophie Catsoulis and Sarah Roberts. Congratulations also to Flynn Hall in first place and Brigid King in second place. Michael commented in his correspondence,” Both girls did a wonderful job and both showed a real feel and love for words and storytelling which is essentially what will always separate 'someone who writes' from a 'writer'.” We are all so proud of the way all students gave their best creative efforts in their narratives.

Booklists Symons Booklist are now on the Loreto Web Page. Hard copies will no longer be supplied to students. Orders have to be placed directly through Symons via their web site. Lists of books that can be sold/purchased secondhand will be sent home with students during the week commencing 14th Nov. Years 11&12 (2011) will receive their to sell/buy booklists before going on exam block.

Open A were defeated by All Hallows 36 to 9 As the score indicates this was a fairly one-sided affair, with Loreto not able to put any pressure on the All Hallows defense. The signs were ominous in the first quarter when Loreto did not score. To their credit, they performed more strongly in the second quarter with 4 points to All Hallows 6. Unfortunately, shots did not hit the target this week and Loreto will need to be more accurate in the next match.
Open B were defeated by Brigidine 19 to 17 In a rematch from round 5, Loreto were confident of another win. However, the match was very close for its entirety, going goal for goal. Stephanie Esprester, Jessica Marshall and Hannah Fowler had strong games in defense, working determinedly all match. Loreto had plenty of scoring opportunities and the match went down to the wire, with Brigidine scoring the winning goal on the final buzzer.
Intermediate A were defeated by St John Fisher 32 to 17 Loreto started slowly and were not organized in attack or defense. However, they kept to the task and demonstrated a spirited fight back in the second half. Motivation improved and Loreto performed strongly in team work as well as individual skills. A very pleasing performance that will continue to allow improvement for the remainder of the season.
Intermediate B defeated Mt St Michael’s 48 to 22 Loreto won this game on the back of excellent communication and encouragement on the court. Madeleine Taylor opened the scoring and blasted 8 points in the first quarter, from Loreto’s total of 10. Ashleigh DaSilva played very well, rebounding strongly and making good position in attack. Another impressive victory, well done girls!
Junior A were defeated by Lourdes Hill 33 to 9 Lourdes Hill were the stronger team on the day, with many of their players exhibiting strong skills and speed. Gabryela Sellars played an excellent defensive game, with many strong rebounds. Natasha Sagner gave great support with court positional play and determined runs out of Loreto’s defensive end. It was pleasing to see Loreto stick to the task for the entire match, even though they were outclassed by a

St Vincent de Paul News Thanks to those who joined Mrs Hamilton, Ms Bauer and myself for our breakup at Sizzlers. It was heartening to see so many there to celebrate a year of effort and hopefully rewarding experiences. Congratulations to these members on their election to the offices of the Executive Committee for 2012: President, Cassandra Day; Vice President, Sophie Atkinson; Secretary, Jemma Sawyer; Treasurer, Madalyn Picaro. Arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled start of your test. Students should assemble on the lawn outside the Mary Ward Centre or Mulwith except where otherwise indicated. There will be 5 or 10 minutes perusal for all exams during which time READING ONLY is permitted (no writing materials are to be used). EXTRA TIME students assemble outside the ET room 407 by 8.30am and 12.30pm on November 8 – 15. Rolls will be marked in the exam room. EXTRA TIME on November 18 and 21 will be in 511/513. Normal school rules apply. You may leave the grounds only to go home. You are not required at school except for your tests. You must wear perfect school uniform, including your hat. Paper is provided. You may take pens, rubber, pencils, ruler and calculator into tests. No paper and no pencil cases. A medical certificate must be supplied if you are ill during exams. 27/10/11
