Volume 9 - 11 October, 2011 Dear Parents and Students It was my pleasure last week to visit the Year 11’s as part of their three day leadership program. I was especially taken by their excitement and anticipation in looking forward to the promise of good things to come and the successes they hope to achieve in 2012. These young women have much to give and a deep desire to make a difference for good within their school community and beyond. Let us hold them especially in our prayers over the coming months as they continue to prepare for these important leadership roles as the Loreto Seniors of 2012. Cherish God’s vocation in You There were no half-measures in Mary Ward’s love of God. She urged her companions to be “wholly God’s”, saying, That “only those whose truly love, are wholly God’s”. Mary Ward prayed that her vocation and that of her companions would be “constant, efficacious and loving”. As companions let us pray for this whole-heartedness of spirit in all we do. Each of us as leaders pray: Lord, teach us to be generous, To give and not count the cost, To toil and not ask for rest, To labour and not to seek reward Saving that knowing we do Your will. Amen.
PARENTS & FRIENDS We thank the P & F for their generous support in funding the provision of two new super-sized fans in the Mary Ward Centre. These fans should assist greatly to reduce the often stifling conditions that prevail during the summer months. Their timely installation should be well received as we look towards the forthcoming important graduation events. FACILITIES MASTER-PLAN I am pleased to advise that after a process of selection, Thomson Adsett have been engaged to work closely with the College over the next six months to develop a facilities master-plan that will guide the School Council as it works to meet the future long-term aspirations of the College. As part of this process, key representatives of the various stakeholder groups will be involved through consultation. We look forward to successful outcomes that will enrich the learning amenities of all students in the years to come.

Drama News Audition opportunity for interested Drama students Markwell Presents Cinematic Theatre Company is holding auditions on this Saturday 15th October, 2011 for the YAIR Project 2012. “The Young Artists in Residence Project is an opportunity for young theatre makers to work and play in a marquee venue with a professional theatre company. YAIR is open to 15 to 18 year olds who would like to take part in a 14 week project where they co-devise a new play with professional artists and then rehearse in preparation to perform and produce a one hour cinematic theatre show for a short season at the Judith Wright centre. Year 10 Drama - Collage Drama Date Claimers: Parents of Year 10 Drama students - after confirming the availability of the Tech Crew and the Mary Ward Centre stage, we are now able to confirm the date that we are scheduled to hold our Year 10 Collage Drama compulsory rehearsal so that you can avoid any clashes. It is imperative that your daughter attends the compulsory rehearsal. Each group will only be required for 1 ½ hours. The date of the Compulsory Rehearsal is as follows: Sun 30 October, 2011 (specific time will be allocated to each group). Ambassadors enjoy a year-long relationship with La Boite Theatre Company that includes attending performances for free whenever you like, meeting the creative teams, special workshops, and more. Current Year 12 Drama students Emily Poncini and Megan Smart have been 2011 La Boite Theatre Ambassadors and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Through this program we have a unique opportunity to influence these bright young adults, expanding their world view and broadening their experiences. In this time we have given away over 1217 free tickets, and welcomed over 2493 Ambassador guests to our theatre, extending to them heavily discounted tickets for our Mainhouse Season. We are thrilled to announce that we will once again invite 100 specially selected Year 11 & 12 students from QLD high schools to join the La Boite team in this special role. What are La Boite Ambassadors? La Boite Ambassadors are students with a passionate interest in theatre who are invited to become an integral part of the La Boite Theatre Company team. As an Ambassador, you gain special insights into the workings of a professional theatre company and the creation of theatre. You also introduce the work of La Boite to your friends and families, and act as advisers to the company by providing feedback and new ideas. Ambassadors from previous years are not eligible.
What are Ambassadors entitled to? Attend each 2012 La Boite Mainhouse production for free, receive a free program, and meet the actors and creative team for a discussion after the show Attend a free Orientation Day at La Boite. On this day, Ambassadors will meet each other and the artistic teams involved in the company's 2012 season including Artistic Director David Berthold. English News We would like to congratulate Alana Mulderry of Year 10 Gold for her recent short story ‘Tick-Tock’. Her English teacher is Mrs Jan Kearney. She was awarded Highly Commended for it when she entered it into the English Teachers’ Association of Queensland’s Literary Competition. Alana will be recognised at a ceremony on October 12 at the Bardon Centre. Her short story is on the Year 10 English Page on the College’s Intranet. Well done, Alana!

Grease The cast including leads, vocal chorus and dancing chorus as well as the stage band has now been announced and we would like to congratulate these students on their placements. We also would like to thank the many students who auditioned for a part but were unsuccessful. The students who will be involved in the production of “Grease” will be given a contract signing pack later this week that they need to read very carefully and get their parents to also read and sign to secure and confirm their placement. It is very important that all scheduled dates are observed and noted before students commit to this co-curricular event as we cannot run an event like this without 100% commitment and attendance from all involved. If these forms are not returned by the due date, then we will assume that your daughter has forfeited her place and it will be offered to the many reserves we have next on our list. On Friday 4th November – 4pm-7pm @ Villanova College a full cast reading will take place where all students involved in the Musical are required to attend. Scripts and music will be distributed to the students at this time. Reminders will be given to the students leading up to this date.

Mental Health Week Yesterday marked the start of Mental Health Week. World Mental Health Day is organised by the World Health Organisation. Acknowledging this day raises public awareness about mental health issues in Australia. The day promotes open discussion of mental disorders, and investments in prevention, promotion and treatment services. The Logo used for Mental Health week represents the community coming together in celebration of achievements of those with a mental illness. In raising awareness of mental health and wellbeing in the community we are supporting those with a mental illness, educating others about mental illness and introducing practices to prevent the onset of a mental illness. This coming together and sense of community represented in the logo is an important message to be shared throughout the Loreto College Community. Please show your support for Mental Health Week by wearing green ribbons being distributed by Year 12s. The colour of these ribbons is significant as green symbolises growth, new life and beginnings. Music News Broadway Concert A big week coming up for students involved in the Broadway concert at Villanova! This is shaping up to be an absolutely spectacular event so make sure you have your tickets booked (there are about 50 left on each night at this stage). All students who are performing on the night are reminded of the following commitments that they must meet: Monday 17 October (college student free day) – rehearsal at Augustine Centre, Villanova, from 9 am to 5 pm. Tuesday 18 October (Choir rehearsal will be held at Villanova) – 3:30 pm to 5 pm. Wednesday 19 October (extra rehearsal) – Dress Rehearsal at Augustine Centre, Villanova, from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Thursday 20 October (Sound Check and First Performance) – Augustine Centre, Villanova, from 3:30 pm to 10 pm. Friday 21 October (Second Performance) – Augustine Centre, Villanova, from 6pm to 10 pm. All these commitments are detailed on the Production Schedule that is attached to the back of this newsletter. Please check this document CAREFULLY! For the rehearsals at Villanova on Tuesday to Thursday next week, the music department will be organising buses to transport students to the rehearsal but it is expected that parents will organise to collect students from Villanova. Please contact Mr Langford at the Music Department if this causes any difficulties.
Guitar Concert I hope all the guitarists who are attending tonight’s concert by the Southern Cross Soloists with Slava Grigoryan have a great evening. St Ita’s Fete This weekend Jazz Ensemble and Sorelle will be performing at the School Fete for St Ita’s Catholic School (249 Gladstone Rd Dutton Park) on Sunday 16 October from 12 to 12:30 pm. Could all members of Jazz Ensemble and Sorelle please arrive by 11:30 am? You will be free to leave at about 1 pm on the day.
Women in Sport Breakfast String Sextet is performing at the Women in Sport Breakfast at the Brisbane Convention Centre Thursday Morning this week (13 October). Students need to be in the venue by 6:10 AM and will perform from 6:30 am to 7:15 am. Students will return to Loreto by taxi after the breakfast (directly after the performance for Guitar Ensemble girls) at approximately 9:30 am.
MSG Mega-Raffle Loreto students involved with either Music Tuition or Music Ensembles should today have received a bundle of 10 tickets to sell for the Mega-Raffle. If any student was away or did not get their tickets for any reason, could they please come to the music office to collect them urgently. The Music Support Group provides funding for over $7000 worth of scholarships each year as well as frequently purchasing instruments and equipment for student use (in recent years this has included amp cases, a new baritone sax, new cymbals, a double bass, and a xylophone). These scholarships and purchases benefit ALL students in the Music Program by allowing the department to run ensembles with balanced instrumentation and adequate resources. However, this is only possible if we raise enough money each year to fund these expenses. The Music Trivia Night and the Mega-Raffle are the Music Support Group's two main fundraising activities each year. Could I please strongly encourage all music families to support this Raffle - if each family involved in the Music Program sells one ten-ticket booklet, we will raise approximately $4000, enabling scholarships to be offered for another year. Results: Round 3 – 5 October Open A defeated Brigidine 26 - 22 In a close match, Loreto were always able to maintain the lead but Brigidine fought hard to keep the scores tight. It was not until the fourth quarter when Loreto combined well in attack to produce several quick baskets. Chloe Creed led the way with strong lay-ups and was given good support from Kristina Sams with accurate shooting. Daniela Sciacca played determinedly and through her body on the line in defense to prevent Brigidine scoring.
Open B were defeated 25 to 12 by All Hallows Loreto started well and looked to get on top of All Hallows early. However, the scoring slowed and Loreto were unable to shoot around the two tall defensive players. Plenty of enthusiasm was displayed and Loreto put in a spirited comeback in the second half, but unfortunately could not secure the win.
Intermediate A defeated All Hallows 72 - 2 As the score indicates this was a very one-sided match. Loreto dominated in all areas and produced an easy win. Fast breaks and effective rebounding were the key, with Erin Stafford and Prue Hemple leading the way in defense. A great team effort all round and a very pleasing performance.
Junior A defeated Mt Alvernia 46 - 8 This was the team’s first win for the season and it was a strong team effort that enabled the victory. All the girls played very well displaying an improved accuracy in shooting. Isobella Scott, Natasha Sagner and Kate O’Sullivan scored strong goals throughout the match. Well done girls, keep up the hard work in training!

A fantastic game was played against the toughest opposition this season. Georgia Dennis and Bridget Sankey proved to be too elusive in attack to cross the score line twice each. Unfortunately, all players experienced pressure while attacking and defending which affected the execution of our game plan. This is viewed as a great experience for the team to learn how to play under consistent pressure by slightly adjusting the angled rucking with an ‘honest ‘ wrapping acting half, as well more efficient execution of attack patterns . Overall, a very pleasing result!

Alyssa Fitzgerald and Chloe Zouppas controlled the game for Loreto with their rucking and organisational play. Sonia Badrak ran the best line in every attacking situation to score four touchdowns on the wing. Brittany Honan had an outstanding game, crossing twice, with Josie Woolaston and Ellie Gray also scoring. Well done girls!!
INTERMEDIATE B: Coach - Eliza Mooney & Ellen Luxton The girls played an excellent game of controlled defence in the first half to keep the opposition scoreless. Great attacking plays by Hannah Wixted enabled her to score twice. It was a tight defensive game in the second half with LHC scoring a touchdown. The team were able to successfully defend the score line to finish as 2-1 winners. Great game girls!
JUNIOR A: Coach - David Witt Loreto played very well with all players making a positive, energetic effort. Unfortunately, the team did not adjust to effectively defend the pacy, opposition winger and lost the game 8-6. Overall a top effort from our Junior A team! All players are reminded to wear Touch football shoes and College sports cap to every game and training.

St Vincent de Paul News Last Thursday I was delighted to accompany 11 of our Year 8 members of St Vincent de Paul to serve afternoon tea to the volunteers of the Holland Park branch of Meals on Wheels. This occasion is an annual event and celebrates the service of the volunteers who work in some capacity to ensure the ongoing success of the Holland Park branch of Meals on Wheels. The girls made many cups of tea and coffee, refilled the tiers of ‘goodies’ on each table and delighted the volunteers with conversation. The girls were great ambassadors of the spirit of Mary

The Australian Childhood Vision Impairment Register Does your child have Vision Impairment? The Australian Childhood Vision Impairment Register collects information on children who have vision impairment. This information is used in research and to plan better services throughout Australia. Information from the Register is shared with researchers and planners, however children & their family are not identified in any way. The Australian Childhood Vision Impairment Register is maintained by the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children, a service provider with a 150 year history of supporting children with vision impairment and their families. The Register is supported by other Australian low vision agencies. If your child has vision impairment you are invited to join. By registering your child you will contribute to what is known about children who have vision impairment and what best meets their needs. The Loreto Term 4 swimming program offers an opportunity for all girls to improve their stroke and fitness, in preparation for summer and 2012 season. Competitive swimmers will benefit from a customised training program that aims to build on the success from the 2011 season. Social swimmers are more than welcome.
