Congratula ons To the Student Representa ve Council and the student body on the wonderful success of their Women Walking for Water campaign. The final tally was an impressive $6057. On behalf of the students I wish to thank everyone in the community who supported this cause so generously, either through me and effort or through dona ons or through both. Congratula ons to Mornane for their Spirit points win.
The money raised will go to provide wells and sani zed water in areas of great need thus making an important difference to the lives of women and girls in developing countries. In keeping with our mission to empower women I provide this informa on in further support of our shared vision for a be er world.
Interna onal Day of the Girl Child: October 11th 11th October has been declared by the United Na ons as the Interna onal Day of the Girl Child. It aims to recognize girls’ rights and to raise awareness about the unique challenges girls face around the world. This year the Day will focus on “Innova ng for Girls’ Educa on”. While there has been significant progress in improving girls’ access to educa on over the last two decades, many girls, par cularly the most marginalized, con nue to be deprived of this basic right. Girls in many countries are s ll unable to a end school and complete their educa on due to safety‐related, financial, ins tu onal and cultural barriers.
Even when girls are in school, perceived low returns from poor quality of educa on, low aspira ons, or household chores and other responsibili es keep them from a ending school or from achieving adequate learning outcomes. The transforma ve poten al for girls and socie es promised through girls’ educa on is yet to be realized.
Recognizing the need for fresh and crea ve perspec ves to propel girls’ educa on forward, the 2013 Interna onal Day of the Girl Child will address the importance of new technology, but also innova on in partnerships, policies, resource u liza on, community mobiliza on, and most of all, the engagement of young people themselves.

All UN agencies, Member States, civil society organiza ons, and private sector actors have poten al tools to innovate for and with girls to advance their educa on. Examples of possible steps include: Improved public and private means of transporta on for girls to get to school—from roads, buses, mopeds, bicycles to boats and canoes;
Collabora on between school systems and the banking industry to facilitate secure and convenient pay delivery to female teachers and scholarship delivery to girls;
Provision of science and technology courses targeted at girls in schools, universi es and voca onal educa on programmes; Corporate mentorship programmes to help girls acquire cri cal work and leadership skills and facilitate their transi on from school to work;
Revisions of school curricula to integrate posi ve messages on gender norms related to violence, child marriage, sexual and reproduc ve health, and male and female family roles; Deploying mobile technology for teaching and learning to reach girls, especially in remote areas. Making it through both primary and secondary educa on is cri cal to girls being able to help break the cycle of poverty. A range of resources is available for school communities to use to help students better understand disasters, how they occur, possible effects and hot to prepare for and recover from disaster events. Personal safety and resilience is always important, but even more so at this time of year with the Queensland storm season approaching.

Support Music at Grilled! During October, you can help the Loreto Music Support Group simply by eating at Grilled Samuel Street. There will be three groups represented and the one that receives the most support will be given $300 from the Grilled: Funding the Local Community program. What an easy (and delicious) way to raise money for student scholarships.
Live & Wired Make sure you come down to the fourth annual Live and Wired Music Festival, Sunday 20 October 4pm to 7 pm on the Deshon Oval. Live & Wired is always a great afternoon of Soul, Rock and Jazz and this year will not only include international food stalls, jumping castles, giant chess, lob-a-choc and more, but will also feature a guest performance from professional group the “Craig Martin Swing Band”, south-east Queensland’s best jazz vocalist! Concert Band One Due to the many students with other commitments this week (including Year 10 Camp, Year 11 Leadership Days, Year 12 Music Extension Recital) there will be no Concert Band One Rehearsal this Thursday 10 October. See you all on Thursday 17 October at which stage we will only have three rehearsals left before Music Night!
Senior Choir, Junior Choir & Concert Band One Are currently preparing a combined piece for the finale of the Music Night Concert. To give these groups the chance to put everything together, members of Concert Band One and Junior Choir are asked to come to Senior Choir rehearsal on Tuesday 29 October (3:30 to 4:30, MWC Stage) and Senior Choir are asked to attend Concert Band One rehearsal on Thursday 31 October (3:30 to 4:30, MWC Stage). While these extra rehearsals are not compulsory as some students have other commitments already, we cannot perform this piece without the appropriate opportunity to put the groups together. I would therefore ask as many students to make the effort to come to these extra rehearsals as possible.
Audition Forms Due Please remember to return your Ensemble Audition Forms for 2014 groups to the Music Office by next Wednesday 16 October. It is especially important to remember to return the forms if you are a member of Guitar Ensemble One or Senior Choir. Even though you don’t actually complete an audition, returning this form will let us know that you intend to continue in the group, and if you don’t do this, you will not receive an invite to next year’s Music Camp!
Musical Auditions Don’t forget to sign up for Musical Auditions by this Friday 11 October. Auditions for all lead/chorus roles will be held on Monday 14 October at Villanova’s Augustine Centre starting from 4 pm, and will involve a being taught a basic dance routine then small group and individual singing and acting. Students will be able to leave straight afterwards their audition. Sign up on the Music Noticeboard by this Friday.

Grigoryan Nights In early term 4, Guitar Ensembles One and Two will perform two concerts with renowned classical guitarists, the Grigoryan Brothers. The concerts will be hosted by Villanova College at the Augustine Centre on the nights of Thursday 24 October and Friday 25 October and will feature performances by Leonard and Slava Grigoryan, who captivated audiences and inspired a whole generation of Loreto guitarists when they came to Villa for a similar event four years ago. Before the brothers perform, the first half of the concerts will also include performances by each school’s guitar ensembles, combined performances featuring the Grigoryan Brothers, and a guest spot from the Aurora Guitar Ensemble. Tickets for the these concerts are now on sale (both nights will be exactly the same) and are available exclusively through the Trybooking website (http://www.trybooking.com/61384). Prices are $25 for adults and $15 for school students. Performing students will not need to purchase tickets, as they have had seats reserved for them on the Thursday night performance, and will be able to watch the 2nd half of the Friday night concert via video-link in the Playhouse. You will also be able to pre-order commemorative concert DVDs on the trybooking website for $20/each if you wish. To help prepare the Guitar Ensembles for these special performances, there will be a day long rehearsal on Monday 21 October (student free day) held at the Augustine Centre – more details to follow soon. Additionally, Guitar Ensemble Two will have a one-off rehearsal at Villanova on Thursday 17 October after school (students in Concert Band One of Junior Choir excused to attend their regular rehearsals). Loreto will provide a bus to transport the girls to Villanova at 3:30 pm but parents should organise to collect their daughters from Villanova’s Sixth Avenue entrance at 5:30 pm on that day.
Music Extension Recital This Thursday 10 October the students from the Year 12 Music Extension class will present a Recital for their Performance Assessment. The recital will begin at 6pm on the Mary Ward Centre Stage and finish approximately 8:30 pm. All members of the Loreto community are welcome to attend and support these girls: Fiona McMahon, Shannon Becquigny, Gaby Flores, Isabella Kirkman, Nicole Pinto, Jaclyn Kuhl, Maddie Dinnen.
Music Support Group The next meeting for the parents’ Music Support Group will be held in the Gonzaga Barry Building on Wednesday 16 October (next week). New members are always welcome!
Music Scholarships A limited number of full- and part- music scholarships will be offered in 2014 to promising students for private music tuition at Loreto College. These scholarships are kindly funded by the Music Support Group. Open A were defeated by St John Fisher 36 to 26 Loreto had two players absent due to illness and had to be vigilant with their substitutions. While they did not secure a win this week there were definite signs of improvement in game play. Communication was better on court and set plays ran more smoothly in attack. Open B defeated San Sisto 24 to 22 This was an incredibly close encounter with Loreto prevailing to secure the win. In the end the difference was that Loreto maintained their composure in the tight situation and held ball security. Erin Stafford was best on court with excellent rebounding this week. Intermediate A (Gold) were defeated by Lourdes Hill 26 to 15 In the initial stages Loreto were hard working with rebounding and ran the plays that were called. However, they lost the lead in the second half and showed signs of fatigue. Defence dropped off and shots were taken from too far outside instead of easier lay up options. Georgia Christie, Isobella Scott, Julia Logan and Lucy Nielson had good games. Intermediate A(Blue) defeated San Sisto 31 to 22 The first half of the match was very close and scores were locked at 18 all at the break. San Sisto were very hungry for the ball. It took Loreto a little while to maintain composure and adjust to their set plays. Tayla Jansen, Jess Galpin and Brigitte Mastry had strong games. Eventually, San Sisto ran into foul trouble and could not maintain their dominant defence. Junior A were defeated by All Hallows’ 36 to 31 Loreto held a slight lead at half time and were playing excellent basketball. Team work has improved again and they were determined to win. Rebounding and passing were particularly pleasing this week. To their credit, All Hallow’s lifted towards the end of the match to secure the victory. aÉà|vxáBUâÄÄxà|Çá Room to Read Dinner Since retiring as Loreto’s Librarian, Kathy Hedemann is volunteering with ‘Room to Read’, an international organisation which raises money to establish libraries in Asia and Africa. The organisation’s objective is to raise funds for girls’ education in developing countries. At a dinner held in July, close to $6000 was raised which provided for 24 years of girls’ education. Loreto College has kindly offered to allow us to hold a ’Room to Read’ dinner in the Mary Ward Centre, on Friday 18 October. A Sri Lankan caterer will be providing a wonderful meal.
