Look deep into those eyes you see deep into that world inside down below the vanity and see the Love alive that’s there and has been there all the while wanting so much for you to see it to be aware it’s always burning there ready to inflame your every deed. LORETO PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL OPENS IN TIMOR LESTE I am delighted to share with you the news from our Loreto Sisters working in Timor Leste that this week they opened the first Loreto Pre-Primary School in the remote area of Gari-uai. The Pre-Primary school opened on 1 June in a refurbished community building and will later this year move to a new building, currently under construction. The full Primary School is planned to open in 2016. The Loreto Sisters presently working in Timor Leste are Sisters Margie Bourke, Natalie Houlihan, Diaan Stuart and Francine Roberts. In the spirit of Mary Ward they are working “to love the poor and to persevere in the same.” as inscripted on Mary Ward’s tombstone in 1645. Timor Leste, located over 400 kilometres north of Australia, is one of the least developed countries in the world, with basic health, literacy and income levels similar to sub-Saharan Africa.

Over the past decade, the newly independent country has travelled down the path of reconciliation as part of the healing process trying to recover from its violent and traumatic history. Most Timorese live in rural areas and many households have insufficient food to feed themselves all year round. According to UNICEF two thirds of the population are under the age of 25, approximately 40% of children are malnourished and more than 58% of the population is illiterate. With so many young children in need of education the school system is simply under-resourced. (Source: www.mwia.org.au) The Loreto Sisters along with MWIA are thus committed to addressing the lack of educational opportunities facing the Timorese people in the remote area of Gari-uai. LORETO PILGRIMAGE TO TIMOR LESTE I am therefore delighted to announce that, in September this year, a small group of our students in Years 11 and 12 will be travelling to Timor Leste during the school holidays as part of a Catholic Mission’s “Getting Involved Globally” (GIG) international immersion experience. Whilst in Timor Leste the students will visit the Loreto Sisters in Bacau and they will also spend some time working with the students at the Gari-uai Loreto Pre-Primary School. This is something to which the girls are very much looking forward. I am delighted with their interest and enthusiasm and thank them for being our first Loreto Coorparoo ‘pilgrims’. No doubt this community has much to learn and gain from such an enriching experience and we look forward to the responses from the girls which they will share with us when they return. CONGRATULATIONS

Economics Trip to Canberra 2015 On Sunday May 24 fifteen Year 12 Economics students along with Miss Nolan and myself, embarked on a two day excursion to our nation’s capital for a dose of “Economics in action”. Currently studying the unit “Contemporary Macroeconomic Management”, these students were able to investigate government decision making at a federal level, as well as improving their civics education. The trip took the students to the Australian War Memorial, The National Gallery, The Australian Electoral Education Centre and Parliament House. On the Monday, the Australian Electoral Electoral Centre delivered an excellent program on the voting process, whilst Parliament House provided the students with opportunities for understanding the process of debating a bill through role play (a program provided by the Parliamentary Education Office). An informative tour of both the House of Representatives and the Senate was also undertaken as well as a session watching a very interesting “Question Time” whilst the House of Representatives had their first sitting after the release of the Budget. Besides Question Time, one of the other highlights of the trip was meeting our local member for Griffith, The Honourable Terri Butler. I would like to thank the Australian Government for contributing with funding for this trip under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate programme. Their support of this programme plays a vital role in enabling us to take on this trip. Thank you also to the fifteen girls who attended –– Jessica Balzano, Grea Effeney, Isabella Grigson, Alana Kotzas, Emily Love-Linay, Maria Manicaros, Laura Mellick, Sarah O'Shea, Rachelle Pinto, Tiarna Smith, Emily Thomas, Nicola Tracey, Chelsea van der Merwe, Holly Zouliou, and Emma Richardson on the trip they were fine ambassadors for Loreto College. Finally I would also like to thank Miss Nolan for her attendance and assistance on the trip; it was invaluable. I think I am safe in saying we all had an interesting and educational experience. Careers News Year 7 Happenings Uniforms Could I please ask all parents to check that their daughter’s uniforms and belongings are clearly labelled? Some hand written labels may have worn off since the beginning of the year. Many girls are missing items of named clothing. Could you check that your daughter has HER OWN belongings? Please return anything that is not yours to student reception. Girls who have been unable to purchase sports jackets due to the lack of supply at Wearitto uniform shop should wear their school day jumper or a Loreto hoodie to training and games. Field Events for Athletics Carnival Field Events for the Athletics Carnival will take place on Wed10 June in Periods 3&4. Girls should bring their sports uniform to school and change at morning tea for these events. All girls will participate unless they are unable to do so due to injury. Computer Clean Up All year 7s will do a clean-up of their computers on Wednesday 10 Jun in Periods 5&6. Computers will be monitored for defects at this time. Girls will be given the opportunity to file their work carefully and to organise their emailing system. The girls will need to bring their hard drives to school on that day so that we can ensure all students are backing up their work correctly. Debating Day The introduction to Debating Day will take place on Friday 12 June. It will run for the whole day in Mulwith. Some of our best Past Pupil Debaters are returning to Loreto to share their expertise with the Year 7s. It promises to be a day of great fun and learning. The Debating Day will be a good opportunity to choose debaters for the QDU competition. Girls should have received an information letter today. Please speak to your daughter to ascertain her interest in joining a debating team. Please return the slip from that letter to indicate your interest and ability to commit. Teams will be finalised on Tuesday 16 June. All team members will need to be available for four debates. Music News Loreto Music Festival Congratulations to the students who have made it through to the finals. All music and accompanist music should now have been submitted to the Music Office. If you have not done so please do so urgently.
Band Slam Band Slam is one of the sections in the Loreto Music Festival. Band groups from within the Classroom program have been entered into this category. No entries were received from outside the Classroom groups this year. Auditions will take place shortly in music classes. The finalists will perform in a lunchtime concert on Tues 23 June in the Mary Ward Centre. The winning band will receive the Band Slam Perpetual Trophy which will be engraved with the winning team name. Ensemble Rehearsal Schedule during Exam Block Could all parents and students please check the attached Rehearsal Schedule, covering the final weeks of the term. Please note there has been a change to Flute Ensemble One since the last printed edition of this schedule. See attached rehearsal schedule. Cancellation of Private Tuition Could parents please be aware that if you wish to cancel your daughter’s private tuition for Term 3, you must do so by Friday 12 June. Year 10 Recording Studio On 17 and 18 June, our Year 10 Music Classes will go to the Ghostgum Recording Studio to professionally record their group compositions and performance assessment. Mrs Oxenford will accompany the students. All students in these classes should have received a letter asking parents for help with transport to and from the venue (Cannon Hill Anglican College). If any parents can assist with transporting students please could you please return the letter as soon as possible so we can finalise transport arrangements. Junior Chorale Group Auditions were recently held for students showing an interest in joining our newly formed Junior Chorale. Successful students will receive a letter which must be signed by their parents giving permission to rehearse with this group. Proposed rehearsal times will be Tuesday lunchtime. Congratulations to all the girls who have been selected to join the group. The group will start rehearsing on Thursday 12 June, lunchtime, room TBA, at which time a permanent rehearsal time will be established. We look forward to the seeing the progress of these girls in performances later in the year. Music Support Group The next MSG meeting will be held on Wednesday 10 June, starting at 7.30PM. Loreto College Athletics Carnival A reminder that students will be attending the Interhouse carnival on Friday 26 June at the University of Queensland track. This is the last interhouse sporting event for the year and it is a normal school day. All students are expected to attend as students are there to support their house and participate in events. All magazines, I pod players, MP3 players and the like are NOT permitted. Students are to wear correct school sports uniform including normal sports runners and cap and can change into house colours once they arrive at school. Students will travel to and from the carnival by bus and will receive their reports when they return to school in the afternoon. An early bus will leave at 8.00am for the 1500m runners. If any student is not able to be here on Friday, 26 June, her report will be posted home. Students who are unable to participate for medical reasons, are to see Ms Carty with a note prior to the carnival date and will be issued with a job on the day. There will be limited canteen facilities but it is strongly advised that each student brings her own lunch. Student should ensure they have a Loreto Sports hat sunscreen and water bottle. Students are asked to ensure that they come prepared for potentially overcast and windy weather conditions. P&F Year 7 - 10 Dance - Friday 31 July Save the date!! The Loreto School Dance is nearly here! The dance will be held on Friday 31 July at 7.00pm. The theme for the evening is “Neon”. We are inviting our Year 12 girls to attend the dance. This will provide a safe environment for all who attend. The dance will feature a professional DJ, a lot of fun for both students and parents, and we all aim to make it enjoyable and safe. With that in mind, we require parents to register their preference and availability for the following jobs: Ticket sales: Six parents needed for student entry and one to assist with the counting and clearance. 6.30pm - 7.30pm. Security: Twelve parents needed for each shift. Crowd control while waiting for tickets and supervising the outside of the hall. The doors of the hall are open for ventilation. Parents are required to stop attendees leaving and others entering. There are two shifts: 6:30pm - 8:30pm and/or 8:30pm - 10:30pm. (Professional Security Guards will be employed for inside the hall). Cloak room: Six parents needed for each shift. Receiving bags for safe keeping during the dance and distribution at the end of the night. 6:30pm - 8:30pm and/or 8:30pm - 10:30pm. Canteen:
Three parents needed for each shift. Drinks sales. 6:30pm - 8:30pm and/or 8:30pm - 10:30pm.

Year 12 Parent Dinner - Avoid disappointment by booking your tickets now!! Please note that the final date to book your place at the Year 12 Parent Dinner will be Friday 10 July at 9.00pm. Trybooking is the only way we can collect your payment for the event, so make sure you book before this date to avoid disappointment. Please also note that Parents of your daughter’s formal partner are most welcome to attend.
Busy calendar for parents A range of events for families to be held over the balance of the year were discussed at the P&F meeting last Tuesday. Among them are the Father’s Day breakfast on Friday 4 September when four theme park passes donated by State Member for Greenslopes Joe Kelly MP will be raffled. The P&F has agreed to match funds raised with a donation to a charity of its choice. The meeting also heard that we will run a photo booth at the Live & Wired Music Festival on Sunday 18 October, preparations are continuing for a mothers’ weekend from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 August, and dates are yet to be fixed for morning/afternoon teas and an information night for parents. The information night will outline assistance available for parents to help their daughters with maths and will involve senior and junior sessions. Another parent forum will be held, this time on a week night in the third term, and also on a date to be fixed. The P&F will also have a higher profile going forward with a dedicated Facebook page going live and a 2m pull-up banner to be used at events through the year. Mark your diaries for the next meeting which is at 7pm on Tuesday 4 August.
