Volume 30 - 7 October, 2014 Dear Parents and Students Welcome back to Term Four – especially to the Year 12’s for whom it will be both significant and memorable as their final term ever! We warmly welcome back both Mrs Cuskelly and Mrs O’Neill from their leave. We welcome the following staff also who will be with us for all or part of the term: Mrs Gold (HPE); Mrs Heathcote (English & History); Ms Johansen (Geography & English); and Mrs Sampford (Maths). We extend to Ms Rebecca Bush who joins us this term as a permanent member of staff, teaching Health & PE, a particular welcome. Ms Bush is a Past Pupil of Loreto. Open our minds to know Your voice, Open our hands to do Your work and Open our hearts to hold Your spirit. Amen. This week is a particularly busy one for our Year 9’s, 10’s and 11’s. The Year 9 students have a whole day workshop on Wednesday focused on respectful relationships and resilience. The Year 10’s have their three day outdoor camp aimed at building confidence, team skills and endurance through facing physical challenges. The Year 11’s have three days devoted to leadership training and development, assisting them to prepare for the year ahead when they will be the leaders of the school. These opportunities are provided as an important part of our “whole person” educational philosophy. They are integral to the Loreto vision that seeks to provide an education that liberates, motivates and empowers students to use their individual gifts with confidence, creativity and generosity in loving and responsible service. I particularly thank the respective Year Coordinators: Mrs Gore, Ms Davidson and Mrs Meecham, for their organisation and coordination of these days. I also sincerely thank the many staff involved for the generous gifts of time and expertise they give to these experiences. Without their support these important and enriching activities, which the students enjoy and gain so much from, would not be possible. CRUCI After much patient waiting and eager anticipation the teachers and students will this week begin to use Cruci. During the next two weeks the classrooms will be used by every Religion class in the school to ensure that each girl is able to experience at least one lesson in Cruci, before its official opening on 19 October. I know that both the students and the teachers are greatly looking forward to the enjoyment of using this new and exciting space. After the Opening on 19 October, our Year 11’s will move from their Mulwith base into Cruci, when it will become their new “home”. The photo on the following page, which many of you have seen and “liked” on our Facebook, show just how spectacular Cruci looks at night – which will be ‘just perfect’ when, one day, it eventually becomes the front entrance to a Performing Arts Centre for Loreto.

Spring, holidays and celebrations; perfect timing for the completion of the Year 9 A Art Design Project which asked students to respond to the design brief to create a paper sculpture which could be used in the promotion of a well-known cultural event. Students worked through the design process and explored a wide range of techniques and then constructed their paper sculptures representing events from ANZAC day to Tomato Festivals. Continuing in the theme of celebration the 2014 Loreto Art Show will be held on Sunday 19 October from 3.00pm to 5.00pm in the Mulwith art rooms with selected works in the Cruci foyer and classrooms. Loreto Students are invited to preview the work in Mulwith on Friday 17 October. This Art Show celebrates the achievements of Loreto Art Students from Years 8 - 12. English News Recently we entered a number of samples of students’ writing into the state-wide Literary Competition which is sponsored by the Independent Education Union and James Cook University. One of our Year 12 students, Meg Ingram, received a High Commendation for her story entitled, ‘Our Land’. Her main character learns to look beyond what is stated by the law to achieve justice for the rights of marginalised indigenous locals. It is an elegant story with a deep connection to place: South Brisbane Parklands and Musgrave Park. The inspiration for her story, amongst other things, was the Literary Tour undertaken in Year 11 English last year. Congratulations to Meg for her achievement. We will make her story available to other students to celebrate this excellent short story. Mrs Catherine O’Donoghue - English Coordinator
Music News The Lion King Senior Music students, don’t forget that we have booked tickets to see the Lion King in Term 4 this year. The Year 12 class will be attending on Wednesday 22 October and the Year 11 class will be attending on Thursday 6 November. Could students and their parents please take careful note of these dates. All extra tickets have now been allocated – it’s great to see so much interest in this fantastic show! Music Extension Recital The students from this year’s Senior Music Extension class will be performing their assessment in a public concert on Thursday 9 October (this week). This fantastic concert will start at 6pm on the Mary Ward Centre stage and run for approximately 90 minutes. Come along and support the girls as this is always a high quality event! Music Rehearsals this week Are all on except for Concert Band One on Thursday afternoon!! Year 10 students will be away on camp and unavailable for most rehearsals on Wednesday/Thursday/Friday (though please come to Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon if you are able). Year 11 Leadership Days will not interfere with rehearsals so all Year 11 girls are expected to attend as normal. Mega-Raffle All students involved in the co-curricular music program should this week receive a booklet of 10 tickets. Parents please watch out for this booklet and students please sell them! The Music Support Group provides funding for over $7000 worth of scholarships each year as well as frequently purchasing instruments and equipment for student use (in recent years this has included amp cases, a new baritone sax, new cymbals, a double bass, and a xylophone). These scholarships and purchases benefit ALL students in the Music Program by allowing the department to run ensembles with balanced instrumentation and adequate resources. If each family involved in the Music Program sells one ten-ticket booklet for the Raffle, we will raise approximately $4000, enabling scholarships to be offered for the following year. This year’s prizes are fantastic: 1st Prize - $500 Cash; 2nd Prize – Chillmax Bar Fridge donated by Premier House (worth $1200); 3rd Prize Vaxair Bagless Vacuum Cleaner donated by Godfreys ($300); 4th Prize Car Service at Gladstone Garage ($300); 5th Prize – Metro Hood 4 Burner BBQ donated by Home Hardware Group ($299). (Please note that this prize order was incorrectly published in the information letter – this correct prize order appears on all tickets). Live & Wired Music Festival The Live & Wired Music Festival is always a fantastic end-of-year concert event. Sit on the green of Deshon Oval and be entertained by Sorelle, Exit Stage Left and the Big Bands from Loreto, Villanova and St Laurence’s College. We have a special guest appearance lined up by Little Girl Blue, featuring past pupil Rebecca Meimaris, as well as food stalls, Jumping Castle, Giant Chess, and a licensed bar. It will be a great afternoon for the whole family – for more information see the flyer at the end of this newsletter. Loreto Water Polo 2014/2015 Water polo has started for the season. We have currently eight teams entered in the competition. The teams are U12, 2 X U13C, U14C, 2 X U15C, U16C and U18B. It is essential that the girls who have trialled and are in a team register on line with the Warriors Club. Most teams will be playing at the Somerville House swimming pool. Calling all Year 10 Parents Year 10 parents are running the Jumping Castle for the ‘Live and Wired Festival’ on Sunday 19 October and we need some parent helpers to make sure the children don't jump all over each other! It is a free ride so you don't have to collect money, only supervise. There will be a ride operator to operate the machinery. Loreto East Timor Immersion Information Night Loreto College Coorparoo has entered a partnership with Catholic Mission in seeking to provide our students with an opportunity to engage in an immersion experience in East Timor. Catholic Mission conducts regular immersion experiences in East Timor for Catholic schools and parishes from around Australia. Catholic Mission provides an experienced facilitator to guide the immersion using local contacts that have become well established over years of Catholic Mission engagement in East Timor. The immersion is a rare and remarkable opportunity to experience the welcome and hospitality of our nearest Asian neighbour. It is a chance to really “be with” the Timorese and experience life in their village communities. Participants will witness the impact of history on the people of East Timor, visit Catholic Mission projects and experience mission in action. The immersion would be for five current Year 10 students and five current Year 11 students, accompanied by two Loreto staff members and a Catholic Mission facilitator. The trip will be for 11 days in the school holidays in September 2015 and at this time the approximate cost is estimated to be $4000. The College, in partnership with Catholic Mission, will conduct an information night for parents and students next Tuesday October 14 from 6.00pm to 7.00pm in the Mary Ward Centre. At that evening a process for registering participation in the Immersion will be explained. Room to Read - Date Claimer Since retiring as Loreto’s Librarian, Kathy Hedemann has been volunteering with ‘Room to Read’, an international organisation which raises money to establish libraries and promote literacy in Asia and Africa. Room to Read founder, John Wood, left a lucrative career with Microsoft. Between 2000 and 2010, his organization established 10,000 libraries – more libraries than Starbucks opened coffee shops! The total now is 16,549 libraries; 14,588,494 books distributed; 1029 books published; 1824 schools constructed; 27,159 girls’ education participants. Free Development & Learn to Swim Clinic Swimming Queensland is hosting a FREE Development & Learn to Swim Clinic on Saturday 18 October at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, Chandler for any child with a disability or special need. Order due date Blazers must be ordered by Friday 31 October for April 2015 delivery. Blazers ordered after Friday 31 October will not be delivered until October 2015. Alternatively, if families do not meet this order deadline, blazers will regrettably be charged at a special order rate of $270 in order to accommodate an express delivery.
