Volume 30 - 6 October, 2015 Dear Parents & Students How wonderful it is to be home after three months abroad. In my 13 weeks away, for which I feel immensely grateful, my husband and I were fortunate to visit 12 different countries. In each we found, experienced and enjoyed: places of great beauty, both natural and man-made; people of genuine kindness, hospitality and welcome; holy and spiritual places of sacredness and prayer; personal encounters with works of art that truly moved and touched deeply one’s soul; and the opportunity to learn and to be enriched in so many ways. None of this would have been possible for me without the support and encouragement of the School Council and the College Leadership Team. I offer my sincere thanks to them all but most especially to Ms Carty for her wonderful and generous leadership in my absence. I express my heartfelt thanks also to Ms Annie Diamond and Mrs Rosemary O’Neill both of whom also took on additional responsibilities for the term. My time away was certainly a time of renewal and refreshment. There were many highlights, far too many to mention here. In time I hope to share with you more of this experience but for now I offer these two photos.

BIG DAY IN Congratulations to Ms Christine Rynne, Mrs Rosemary O’Neill and the members of the Student Representative Council for their successful organization of the “Big Day In” at the end of last term. The day was filled with fun, food and relaxation. Over $5000 was raised which will help support the work of Micah and Best Life. These wonderful organisations offer help for the homeless and support families who have children with disabilities. TIMOR LESTE IMMERSION On 30 October, our inaugural group of travellers to Timor Leste arrived home safe and happy albeit a little tired and dusty! Ms Emma Beach and Mrs Di Hansen accompanied 12 Year 11 and 12 students to visit the Loreto Sisters in Bacau, Dominican orphanages in Dili and community programs in Laleia. They also spent time at the Gari-uai Loreto Pre-Primary School. I take the liberty of quoting Mark Smith from Catholic Mission who travelled with the group.
Your girls were amazing. They are a credit to you and to the Loreto community. I was so impressed with how well they embraced every opportunity along the way. I knew that this team and this experience was going to special the very first night in Dili when I came out to a stunning sunset in our common area and saw the girls all in small groups sitting around on the floor playing with the kids from the orphanage barely minutes after unpacking after a day’s travel. And so they continued all the way through. Every community leader we connected with communicated to me the same sentiment - what a great group this is and in particular how well they have immersed themselves into our community life. You would have been so proud of them. I join with him in congratulating everyone associated with the planning for this trip and, most especially, the girls who embraced the experience with such respect, enthusiasm and joy. I look forward to sharing their stories and many, many photos!

THIS WEEK
Our best wishes and prayers this week go to the Year 10’s and Year 11’s. The Year 10’s, together with their teachers, will be away on camp for the rest of the week. The Year 10 camp has a particular emphasis on outdoor education and team building which is of course such an important element of this. We wish the students and the staff safe travels and great enjoyment in meeting the challenges ahead. The Year 11’s will likewise be on an alternative program this week. For the next three days they will be taking part in leadership training which is important preparation for their work as seniors in 2016. We wish them and their teachers an enjoyable and rewarding few days. CONGRATULATIONS
To Elise Andreas (Year 10) whose work has been awarded 1st Place for Section B – Short Story in the 2015 Literary Competition conducted by the IEUA-QNT, the English Teachers’ Association and James Cook University. Congratulations also to Matilda Day (Year 12) whose work was selected as Highly Commended for Section A – Short Story. The standard of entries in this annual competition is extremely high so this is wonderful recognition for both students.

Art News September, 2015 It is with much pleasure that we invite you to the 2015 Loreto College Art Show - a celebration of art from Years 7 - 12. The exhibition will be in Cruci on the ground floor, Sunday 18 October from 3.00pm to 5.00pm. Loreto students will also be able to view the exhibition on Friday 16 October. Congratulations to Constantina Xynias whose work was featured in the goa Project Exhibition at the Judith Wright Centre. This work was one of 15 selected for the exhibition in the Schools Category and on the opening night was awarded a Highly Commended. Leonie McCulkin - Art Coordinator
English News Competition Winners We recently submitted entries of student work into the state-wide 2015 Literary Competition, sponsored by QIEU, James Cook University and The English Teachers Association. We are delighted to report that two of our entries were recognised. Congratulations to Elise Andreas of 10 Green for first prize in her age group. Her story ‘Crossroads’ effectively represented the ethical dilemma of a son deciding to allow his mother to die with dignity. She effectively described his harrowing night at a vigil by her bedside, using flashbacks to detail the poignant moments of his upbringing. In addition, Matilda Day of Year 12 submitted her short story based on her New Farm tour in Year 11. Entitled ‘4:00 -5:00 on a Tuesday Morning’, the story describes the chance meeting of a teenage boy and girl on opposite ends of the social scale. They find an unlikely, momentary connection. For the reader, it is cute, edgy and lyrical. She won a Highly Commended Award. The girls and their parents are invited to receive their awards on October 14 at the Queensland Multicultural Centre. Their photographs will appear in the ‘Independent Voice’ which is the journal of QIEU-QNT. Congratulations! Year 7 GREEN, GOLD AND RED The girls in these classes will be going on an excursion to Southbank and the CBD next Monday. This is a joint project of English, Art and Geography. Last term in the last week, the girls received a letter detailing the day. This is a reminder to bring their clipboard, booklet, lunch, drink and a small bag. They will wear sports uniform with their hats. The girls will walk from Kurilpa Bridge to the Botanical Gardens and note aspects pertinent to the three subjects along the way. Uncle Joe Kirk will tell them indigenous stories at the base of Kurilpa Bridge. The girls are asked to meet in the Undercroft at 8.30 sharp for a quick departure to Southbank. Year 9 Business - Buy Smart Competition Last term Year 9 Business students have been studying how to become a smart consumer. Students have looked at issues such as becoming financially literate, avoiding scams and learning their consumer rights. As part of the unit the girls have prepared a range of creative and innovative entries into the Queensland Government’s Buy Smart Competition. Home Economics Our Year 12 students finished Term 3 with their practical cooking exam. Performing Arts Paper Moon now on sale! Tickets are now on sale for the Paper Moon theatre production via the following link www.trybooking.com/IXZH which can also be located on the College website. Tickets are $15 each. All students of Drama are encouraged to attend, as exposure to live theatre enhances their learning experiences in the class room. Additionally, those girls wishing to audition for future theatre productions and the school musical should also attend so they can appreciate the aesthetic of theatre and the dedication and talent required by a student ensemble. Prior to each Paper Moon performance there will be pre-theatre drinks in Drama Studio 401. Begin your night under the stars reminiscing about Cloudland, the iconic dance venue in which our play is set. Past students have been sending in their photos at Cloudland and this will no doubt provide some interesting chit-chat prior to an evening at the theatre. Nibbles are complimentary and drinks are $5 for wine and $2.50 for soft drinks. Guys and Dolls Musical Audition Information Audition Packs will be available for collection this week from Drama Studio 411. This pack will provide all the information you require to prepare for a successful audition. There will be an opportunity to be involved in Guys and Dolls as:
Principal – lead role, strong characterisation, singing and basic dancing
Supporting role – strong characterisation, some lines, may sing and/or basic dancing
Chorus member – singing and basic dancing
Specialist Dancer – a trained dancer who can demonstrate specific skills (male and female)
Orchestra - musician
Crew – backstage, lighting and/or sound working closely with the Stage Manager
Students eligible to audition will be in Years 9 – 11 (2015) All auditions will occur at Loreto College: Singers (Mary Ward Stage), Actors (Drama Studio 411) and Specialist Dancers (Drama Studio 401). Music Extension Recital: Thursday 8 October This Thursday, the nine students studying Music Extension will present their final Performance Recital in a concert on the Mary Ward Centre stage. Room to Read Nepalese Dinner Internationally acclaimed Nepalese tabla percussionist, Dheeraj Shrestha opened the entertainment for the Room to Read Nepalese dinner. We then ate Nepalese food and gained insights into life in Nepal from mountaineer, Brad Robson. and community worker, Val Riches, who is presently again volunteering in Nepal with the Wandering Eye Clinic. Loreto Tech Crew members, Ally Palazzotto and Mikaela Keyser operated the sound and audiovisual equipment with great ability and organizational skills. Many thanks go to our wonderful prize donors from the Loreto community. Room to Read is deeply appreciative to Loreto College for the use of the wonderful Mary Ward Centre and for the support of the Loreto community. Swim for Squad and Water Polo Fitness The squad training and fitness sessions are conducted on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning at Loreto pool from 6.30am to 8.00am. It is recommended that all water polo players try to attend one session for fitness. All Squad swimmers are also welcome to attend. Water Polo Welcome to the first round of Water polo. Each player MUST be at the venue 30 minutes prior to the game, with full sports uniform, togs, cap and mouth guard. A reminder that full PE uniform MUST be worn to and from the venue. Any girls who are unable to make it to the game must notify the Team Manager, Mrs Stevens and their Coach prior to the game. There are four different venues this season.
