To the Music students for another evening of high quality performances. Thank you for sharing your wonderful talents so magnificently with us. It is always a privilege and a pleasure to attend this final concert for the year.
To Alexandra White, Austen Whitewood, Lauren Michael and Aislind Bell who go through to the Finals in the ESU Public Speaking Competition on November 12. The other students who competed and spoke so well are Sophia Dabinett, Priyanka Mirchandani and Kitty Lloyd.
I offer my sincere thanks to all the staff who have tutored, mentored, encouraged and supported the students in these endeavours. Your time and effort is very greatly appreciated. WHOLE SCHOOL SURVEY
Early in 2011, I invited Loreto staff, students and parents to participate in a whole school survey, the results of which were very affirming for the College. With participation from over 80% of the community the data was extremely useful for us in terms of our strategic planning. We thus committed to conduct the survey every three years to ensure that we remained informed and attentive to the collective voice of the community. Therefore, to enable the College Leadership team and School Council to be able to to use fresh data to inform next year’s strategic planning, we seek your participation in the upcoming survey. This week, all students, staff and parents will receive an e-invitation from the MYP Corporation inviting participation in the on-line School Results Survey. This particular survey is used by many schools nationally, and will therefore provide us with useful benchmark data with which to compare and improve our performance. In anticipation, I thank you for your participation and support. MASTER PLAN - STAGE 1 I am pleased to confirm that the building works are set to commence on Monday 25 November and that Rohrig (Qld) Pty Ltd has been appointed as constructors. As the works will begin with the refurbishment and extension of both Home Economics and the Tuckshop, these facilities will be unavailable during the final week of term. During the last week of term 25 – 29 November we will thus provide a “basics only tuckshop service” from the Mary Ward Centre kitchen. There will be no hot foods available and only limited options such as sandwiches, biscuits, drinks and fruit. In anticipation, I thank you for your understanding and patience.

Families are reminded of the College’s student withdrawal policy requiring one term’s notice in writing of any intention to withdraw a student from the College. Formal notice is to be given no later than the first day of the term at the end of which it is intended that the student would leave. In default of such notice, one term’s fees will be payable. ADF Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Awards - 2013 Each year the Australian Defence Force acknowledges the sacrifice made by Australian military personnel at the battle of Long Tan, during the Vietnam War, by awarding Leadership and Teamwork Awards to students in Years 10 and 12. These awards recognize students who have displayed leadership qualities, teamwork, resourcefulness, cooperation, integrity, communication skills and community involvement. It is with great pleasure that we announce that two of our students, Samantha Bull (Year 12) and Samantha Crawford (Year 10) are recipients of these awards. Buy Smart Competition This year The Office of Fair Trading competition saw 1235 students from 52 schools across the State enter the Consumer Awareness Competition. All students in Year 9 Business Practices actively engaged in increasing their consumer knowledge and leant about the challenges, opportunities and pitfalls faced in the modern marketplace. The 55 students who summited entries from Loreto are to be congratulated for the high standard of their work. Special congratulations goes to Apagi Kalligeros and Rebecca Smith for their outstanding entry in the 2013 Buy Smart Competition that saw them shortlisted and take out the Highly Commended Award. The girls’ efforts were acknowledged when they were invited to attend the awards ceremony at Parliament House last Tuesday, where the Hon Jarrod Bleijie MP (Attorney-General and Minister for Justice) presented them with their certificate. Well done, girls and we Ms Chris Rynne - Business Coordinator look forward to more amazing entries from our students in 2014.
Music News Music Night – Last Friday night, we celebrated the end of the 2013 musical year with a fantastic concert. Almost 150 students performed on the night, many of them finishing the concert on stage to sing and play “The Power of the Dream”, music written for the opening ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. We also somewhat sadly farewelled our graduating Year 12 students who have been great leaders and excellent role models for their peers. We wish them well and hope they can find ways to keep playing music once they leave Loreto. Thanks must go to all the ensemble conductors for all their work in preparing the ensembles, to Mrs Rosemary O’Neill for her expert compering, and to Mrs Peita Ward, Ms Annie Diamond and Mrs Cathy O’Donoghue who assisted with supervision and organisation of students. We do have one lucky door prize that has not yet been collected – a $20 Flowerama Voucher that can be collected from the Music Office on presentation of a Green D007 ticket! Ensemble Auditions – Sunday saw music students backing up from the concert to audition for places in 2014 music ensembles. Hopefully the morning was not too stressful, especially for all the Year 7s who are coming to Loreto next year! As a result of these auditions we will be publishing Ensemble Lists by the end of this week, as well as sending out Music Camp 2014 Invitations to students selected in Senior Choir, Concert Band One, Guitar Ensemble One and String Ensemble.
Senior Choir / Junior Choir – Our final performance for the year is always Graduation Mass, to be held on Friday 15 November at 7pm in the Mary Ward Centre. Leading the congregational singing at this mass is a very public contribution to the school community and we expect that all students in the choir should try to make themselves available for this service (remember that Year 12s are graduating and are not available to participate in the choir!). The Mass will finish between 8:30 pm and 9 pm and students in the choirs are welcome to leave at that time – there is no expectation to stay for the Graduation Ceremony itself. To prepare for this Mass, the Senior and Junior Choir will hold a combined rehearsal with selected instrumentalists on Tuesday 12 November in Room 702.

It is important that all students attend this week’s final rehearsals to return music. Public Speaking Last week, ESU (English Speaking Union) held its Junior Competition at ESU House, Milton. Sophia Dabinett (Year 8) spoke on Monday night to To be an Australian! In her usual style, Sophia delivered her speech with great confidence and aplomb! On the following Wednesday evening, Lauren Michael, Priyanka Mirchandani and Kitty Lloyd, Alexandra White, Austen Whitewood and Aislind Bell (Year 9s) all delivered their speeches on The Networked You! I was immensely proud of each girl who represented Loreto magnificently. Each speech was varied and offered the audience humour, depth and insight. These girls have given up each lunch and many early mornings to prepare themselves and I commend them on their commitment, diligence and enthusiasm. Moving on to the finals on November 12 are Alexandra White, Austen Whitewood, Lauren Michael and Aislind Bell. There are twelve finalists all together and competition is tough! P & F News The last P&F meeting of the year was held last Tuesday. Those in attendance heard:

Cheryl presented flowers to Kerrie Bull in recognition of her untiring efforts on Live & Wired, as well as her organisation of several student dances, and Libby Oliver for her work on the P & F. The contribution of former P & F President John Welch and Vice-President Mary Favios, who were unable to attend, were also recognised with a bottle of wine and flowers. As a result of its fund raising efforts throughout the year and after allowing for spending on various projects, the P & F ended October with almost $28,000 available for worthwhile projects in future, which may include solar heating of the swimming pool in 2015. P & F Parent Year Level Representatives Help generate community spirit by volunteering as a Year level rep! Each year, the P & F look to our community, for one or two parents of each Year level, to organise ‘get-togethers’. These are a wonderful way to meet other parents from your daughter’s Year. The events can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish! Some event ideas may include drinks and nibbles by the Loreto pool, at someone’s home, park or a restaurant or bar. Support a local café by organising a Sunday brunch. You may even like to combine a Year level get-together with another event, such as a College dance. If you are holding an event at a private home, we will provide you with a copy of the GUIDELINES FOR HOLDING FUNCTIONS AT PRIVATE RESIDENCES. Advertising your events is as simple as placing an ‘advert’ in the weekly Loreto newsletter. You can put together your own advert or we can help you. St Vincent de Paul News The year will close for the Loreto St Vincent de Paul conference with members attending the Graduation Dance for the Seniors at the Nursery Road State Special School where they have assisted at times during the year. Over the Christmas break, members will deliver presents to the recipients in the Holland Park Meals on Wheels. They will be required between 11.00am and 1.30pm on 20 December. I have always prized the letters and phone calls of appreciation from our local community after a delivery day. My thanks and great appreciation goes out to the parents of students in our Loreto Community for their unfailing support of the work done by the members of St Vinnie’s at Loreto over the past 22 years of my time as Coordinator. I hope that students past and present are proud and joyful to have been called Vincentians, working “hands on” and “face to face”. There is no doubt that I will miss their enthusiasm and willingness to participate in the work of the Society, especially on the Outreaches. It represents the core of our Christian faith and operates at the grass roots level of the Gospel values. I would ask you to read the brief synopsis of the beginnings of the Society, with the youthful vision and enthusiasm of the student Frederic Ozanam. Bill Kenny - Coordinator
The Society of St Vincent de Paul - Frederic Ozanam – Founder of the Society On the evening of 23 April 1833, Frederic’s twentieth birthday, six students – Augustine le Taillandier, Francois Lallier, Felix Clave, Jules Devaux. Paul Lamache, Frederic Ozanam – and their mentor Emmanuel Bailley, met in the offices of The Catholic Tribune. On that night the Conference of Charity was born. Frederic Ozanam was the primary founder, inspiration and soul of the Conference. In 1835, with the formulation of the first rules, the name of the Conference was officially changed to the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a name that they had begun to adopt the previous year. The small group of seven added an eighth member; then they expanded to fifteen. Amazingly, the Conference began to mushroom. During the first five years, membership increased to more than two thousand in fifteen centres throughout France. Although the Society was composed principally of students, by 1838 others had joined the Society. Several of these were men in high places. Most of the expansion of the Society took place when students would return home from school and encourage others to join them in establishing local Conferences of the Society. The Society took fire from the spark within its membership. Members of the Society refer to their individual groups as Conferences [lit.“working together”] and to themselves as Vincentians. From the beginning the key to their ministry to the poor and needy was home visitation. Members would always go in pairs to the homes of the poor after the exhortation of Jesus who sent his Apostles and disciples two by two to continue his mission. No form of Charity was foreign to the Society. Not only did Frederic and the others take care of the physical and material needs of others (food, shelter, clothing, firewood), they also involved themselves with tutoring, even setting up libraries for members of the military. During the bloody revolutionary skirmishes, Vincentians attended to the wounded and the dying. In every work, members of the Society were solicitous to the spiritual and moral welfare of others. Frederic insisted that Vincentians not restrict their charity to Catholics, but be the servants of all in need. He also proposed that countries help one another, especially in situations of national catastrophes. This insistence of mutuality may well be traced back to Frederic’s early involvement with the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in Lyon and its missionary outreach. Frederic supported the Society of Paris when they aided the Society of Dublin during the Irish famine (18451850). Dublin reciprocated during the horrible revolution of 1848 in France. On 30 January 1853, Frederic reported at a meeting in Florence, Italy, that the Society included two thousand members in Paris alone, where they were visiting approximately one-third of all the poor in that city. Membership numbered five hundred separate conferences throughout Europe and onto other continents. During Frederic’s lifetime, he witnessed the establishment of the Society in Italy, Belgium, Scotland, Ireland, England, Germany, The United States, Holland, Greece, Turkey, Jerusalem, Switzerland, Austria, Mexico and Canada. (extract from Ronald Ramson’s excellent book on the Society) (Frederic was born during a time of great change and turmoil. He became a professor and lectured at the Sorbonne. He also taught in a school. His achievements continued to multiply until his death. Throughout most of his life he suffered with debilitating kidney disease and died at the early age of 40 leaving behind a wife and daughter.)

Results from Round 7: Open A were defeated by All Hallows’ 51 to 24 All Hallows’ were a classy opposition and this was always going to be a difficult match. Loreto started strongly scoring the first points and worked tirelessly in defence to try and reduce the flow of baskets. Taili Beausang, Chiara Asnicar and Madeleine Dinnen had good games. Open B were defeated by All Hallows’ 26 to 25 As the score suggests this was a nail biter that went down to the last seconds of the match. Loreto had held the lead for the entirety, but to their credit, All Hallows’ stole victory with a basket in the final seconds. Darcy-Rae McCowan shot strongly from the free throw line and defended admirably. Julia Edwards and Mary-Kate Dennis were excellent in rebounding skills. Intermediate A Gold(10’s) drew 30 all with San Sisto Loreto displayed plenty of determination and effort to fight their way back from a deficit. Lucy Nielson, Lauren Effeney and Georgia Christie were the strongest on court this week. There were plenty of great passes that become good assists. This was an exciting match and Loreto did well to end it in a draw. Intermediate A Blue (9’s) were defeated by All Hallows’ 63 to 13 Ryleigh Bennett and Adriana Urbina had strong games in defence, while Stefanie Gjorkmarkovic ran the court with great intensity. Tayla Jansen was accurate with shooting. While the score indicates a comprehensive victory, Loreto were preparing for the rematch in the Grand Final next week. Junior A were defeated by St Rita’s 37 to 26 St Rita’s had one strong player and Loreto were unable to prevent her from dominating the scoring. The transition of the ball down the court was not as smooth this week and passing lacked strength and accuracy. Eliza Greene, Georgia Brown and Rachael Dalton had strong games. Defensively, it took the team 30 minutes to coordinate their movement and act cohesively as a group of 6 rather than 6 individuals. Being able to execute all the subunit skills accurately will provide a good basis for our last game. Wade Bilton and Emily Smallhorn played exceptionally well. Open B vs San Sisto Lost 2-3 An upsetting loss for the team. Nicole Kassos scored both our touchdowns with perceptive play. Looking forward to an exciting finals match! Inter A vs LHC Lost 1 - 12 The team were beaten by a well organised side. Unfortunately, the ability to execute the game plan and play to ability was not as strong as last week. Long passing was evident as were long range touchdowns. Good execution of all skills by Julia Palmer and an outstanding game from Emily Littleton. Inter C 1 vs LHC Won 4–2 Great attack by Taylor-Lea Schulz. Amanda Hansen‘s defence was outstanding and Julia Beiers showed good pace on the wing. All girls clearly benefited from their hard training session. Inter C 2 vs St John Fisher Drew 2-2 A wonderful game to watch as the team fought back from being down a touchdown twice.Great speed in attack and defence. All players need to improve play around the ruck by going forward in attack and playing tighter in defence. Inter D vs LHC Lost 4-2 A great start to the game with 2 runaway touchdowns to Jessica Aitken. Unfortunately, the defence was not alert leaving gaps and then not sliding quickly to cover the attack. Junior A vs MSM Won 6-0 A quick paced game. Rucking was really well executed. Fine games from Natalie Shay, Anna McGuckin and Madeline Greer. Results from Round 3: Under 13 had a BYE. Coach: Oliver Chamber Under 14 vs St Margaret’s Lost 13 - 8 The Under 14s had their best game of the season scoring 8 goals. It was a really close game throughout the first half tying at half time with St Margaret's 8 all, however we eventually lost 13-8. The girls are eager to learn more water polo techniques which is evident from last week’s game and the constant questions at training. Coach: Caitlyn Chambers Under 15 vs Brisbane Girls Grammar Lost. The team had an unlucky game with minor lapses costing key goals in defence. The girls played really well and have improved greatly from last season. This was clearly visible with some amazing goals on the weekend. Coach: Oliver Chamber Under 16 vs The Warriors (the Club Team) Won A fantastic win despite missing players. It was a big effort from Julia Logan who played goally and made some fantastic saves. The girls still have some hard work ahead of them, in particular their transition from defence to attack. Great work girls. A special thanks to Ollie Chambers who filled in to coach the u16’s this week. Coach: James Duffy Under 18 vs Brisbane Girls Grammar Lost The girls played a nailed biting match having their first close game for the season. They performed extremely well in defence shutting down most of the opposition’s attack. At times the lack of concentration saw the opposition score some goals. However despite this the girls worked hard in attack, having countless opportunities to score. A rushed attack often led to not converting these opportunities. Overall a great game to play and watch. Waterpolo training for Fitness - Term 4 All girls are invited to attend swim training sessions for the Waterpolo at the Loreto pool in preparation for the 2014 season. These sessions are held on Tuesday and Thursday morning from 6.45am to 8.00am. Please register at the sports notice board. There is no cost for the swim sessions.
Swimming Squad for 2014 The Term 4 Swimming Squad program has started. This is an opportunity for all girls wanting to be part of the 2014 Swim Squad to meet the new coach, Ms Hatch, in preparation for the 2014 season. The details are as follows: Monday and Wednesday from 6.30am to 7.45am at Loreto Pool. The dates are 6, 11, 13, 25 and 27 November 2013. Please sign up at the Sports office.
Majestic Park Running Any girls are welcome to join the running training sessions with Andrew Lulham and Clare Geraghty on Monday and Tuesday afternoon at 3.30pm to 4.45pm and Thursday morning from 6.45am to 8.00am. Bulletins/Notices Attention Year 8 and Year 10 Parents A reminder that Brisbane City Council, Queensland Health and Queensland University of Technology researchers are conducting an online survey in conjunction with the school-based vaccination program in 2013. While all vaccines on the National Schedule have an excellent safety profile and reactions following immunisation are reported by health professionals to Queensland Health to ensure ongoing safety, relatively few reports come from parents and young people. This survey hopes to gain parents’ perspectives on reactions experienced by students after being vaccinated and also hopes to identify any differences between reactions experienced by boys and those by girls. This will enable Queensland Health to tailor the information given to parents prior to the school-based vaccination clinics. Date: 13, 14, 15 January & 20, 21 & 22 January 2014. Days: Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. Venue: Loreto Swimming Pool. Time: 7:15am – 9:00am. Cost: Free for Swim Clinic. There will be a Breakfast on 22nd January directly after training. (Cost of Breakfast will be $10.00 per swimmer)
The Loreto Swim clinic/training program offers an opportunity for all girls to improve their stroke and fitness, in preparation for the 2014 Competition. Competitive swimmers/past squad swimmers will benefit from a customised training program that aims to build on the success from the 2013 season. Social swimmers are welcome.
