It was so pleasing to hear from Mr Kenny of the enthusiasm of our nine St Vincent de Paul representa ves at the recent combined schools’ Social Jus ce Day. The hall at Mt Alvernia College was ”alive with energy and that wonderful spirit we love to see in the youth of today”. Apart from discussing the very topical issue of refugees and asylum seekers from a Chris an point of view, the St Vinnies Youth team invited the students to consider the many difficul es and the immense suffering that goes with being a refugee: the loss of homeland, family and possessions as well as the hardship of the journey. The theme from scripture was “I was a stranger and you welcomed me”. The students worked in different groups to explore different aspects of the world refugee problem. With assistance from experienced personnel from organisa ons such as Caritas, the day had impact and certainly gave the students and the staff much to think about. On behalf of the students, I wish to thank Mr Kenny for his generous leadership and guidance of the enthusias c and commi ed St Vincent De Paul Chapter at Loreto.

YEAR 12 RETREAT I offer my sincere thanks to the Year 12 teaching staff, with par cular thanks to Mr Donnelly and Mr McAlinden, for their generosity and inspira on in leading the Year 12’s through the spiritual journey of last week’s retreats. The girls have said to me how much they gained from this me together and how apprecia ve they were of the opportunity to take me out from their busy schedules to reflect, pray and ponder upon the very essence of their lives, their journeys and their rela onships past ‐ present and future. As part of this process a new funding model has been proposed, and this is now the subject of discussions between the Federal government and State governments, and the Catholic and Independent schooling sectors. Details of the proposed funding model at this stage remain unknown, and so the funding Catholic school students might receive under any new model is very unclear. However, with a Federal election due later this year, and no new funding arrangements yet confirmed for 2014 and beyond, school funding will continue to be an important issue for all political parties and for public debate. In the lead-up to the review process, Catholic school authorities asked the Federal Government for additional funding to close the funding gap between Catholic schools and government schools. On average, Catholic school students currently receive 20 per cent less government funding than if they attended government schools. Catholic schools strive to keep fees as low as possible so that more families can choose a Catholic school for their children. Even when school fees paid by parents are included, Catholic schools, on average, operate with only about 90 per cent of the income of government schools. If Catholic school funding is frozen, reduced or fails to keep pace with government school funding, Catholic schools may be forced to increase their school fees. If fees go up, the extra cost may lead to parents taking their children out of Catholic schools, and in turn put further pressure on government schools and cost government more money. To make sure this does not happen, it is important that governments fund Catholic schools fairly into the future. Catholic school authorities recognise the vital importance of this situation for families and will provide more information as it becomes available from the National Catholic Education Commission. Little BigSound Little BigSound is a collaborative one day music industry forum project between QMusic and the Queensland Academy of Creative Industries/Youth Music Industries aimed at young people in upper high school and tertiary courses who are interested in pursuing a career in the contemporary music industry, either as musicians or industry workers. The day is focused on building skills, and providing information specifically targeted at young people aged 14 - 25 and will provide a combination of informative panels and breakout sessions designed to inspire, educate and engage. Little BigSound will focus on the contemporary music industry and its related creative career pathways, such as band management, music photography, marketing and publicity for musicians, and event management. Little BigSound will include a live band showcase featuring emerging artists. The day also provides an opportunity to network, share ideas and create relationships for future collaboration and support. Lunch will be included. When:

_tÇzâtzx WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá French Last week we welcomed 17 French exchange students and their two accompanying teachers to Loreto College Coorparoo from our sister school, St Joseph de Tivoli in Bordeaux. Thank you to the Loreto families who are hosting our international guests. During their visit to Brisbane, the French group have been participating in a range of classes which have been specially organised for them and I would like to thank the teachers involved in these activities. Last Thursday the French exchange students visited Underwater World and Mooloolaba and this week (weather dependent!) they will go to Stradbroke Island, Australia Zoo, Southbank and Brisbane city. In addition, the French group have been working with each of the French classes at Loreto which is proving to be an enriching cultural and linguistic experience for everyone involved. Hopefully our French guests can enjoy some Queensland sunshine before their departure this Friday! We look forward to seeing the families who are hosting the French students at the farewell get together this Wednesday 6th March in the Mary Ward Centre canteen area near the pool. I would also like to thank Naa Sackey and the Multicultural Council for the wonderful welcome snacks that they provided for the French group upon their arrival at Loreto last Monday. In the pouring rain, it was lovely to see some warm hospitality extended to our international visitors. The Multicultural Council is also to be commended for the excellent way in which they organised celebrations for French Day recently. The cakes, croissants and éclairs were very popular at morning tea as was the “Design a Dress” competition at lunch time. All students studying classroom Music from Years 9 - 12 will need to leave regular classes at 10:15 am and meet immediately in the mezzanine of the MWC for roll marking and departure. Loreto Music Festival – Entries are now open for the Loreto Music Festival! fÑÉÜàá WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá SWIM CAMP On 22 and 23 February, thirty girls from the Loreto Swim squad travelled to Runaway Bay’s Super Centre at the Gold Coast in our schools first ever sport camp. Here, the team enjoyed the rarity of swimming in a 50m heated pool where they could practice their dives, sprinting and relays, similar to the pool we will be competing in at Catholic School Girls. Speaking on behalf of the squad, the camp was a great opportunity and a very enjoyable experience for us all. We had the opportunity to spend time with the Year 8s and work with the other grades. A few highlights of the camp, aside from enjoying the delicious food buffet, was witnessing the girls attempting to do Pilates and joining in some fun team building exercises. The team was grateful that our coach, Tennille was able to attend the camp with us. Thanks to Tennille and to our teachers, Mrs Stevens and Mrs McKeown who were able to deal with any concerns at Saturday morning training, and with a wake up call at 5.30am! Volleyball Results It was a difficult round of Volleyball this week, due to Retreat, rain and a couple of forfeits. Congratulations to all girls for digging deep and producing improved ‘attacking’ Volleyball. Open A A dominant 3 – 0 win over Mt St Michaels came primarily on the back of some awesome power serving. The calling and teamwork also improved as the match progressed with some nice setting and hitting later in the match. Open B The girls put up a hard fight this week but unfortunately lost the match 2-1. Great blocking by Claudia Miotti and fantastic dedication by everyone. Junior A The Junior A Volleyball team had a disappointing yet incredibly hard fought 2-1 loss against MTA. Narrowly losing the first set, the second set then went down to the wire which the Junior A girls deservedly won. The final set, much like the rest of the game swung in each team’s favour throughout, with Loreto losing by two points. All girls in this game played out of their skins and should be very proud of their efforts. Junior B Unfortunately, the Junior B team went down 3-0 to Our Lady's College. Shenae Megahey played with consistent serves, scoring us at least 9 points, throughout the game. Improved focus in training on Mondays in required to ensure we are serving and passing consistently. Our calling has improved. Keep up the hard work Junior B! Junior C Great serving efforts by Sophie Freedman and Paige Paremain who under pressure maintained composure and served to win both sets after being down. Special mention to Sidonie Smith for great spiking and all players on the sideline for their continual enthusiasm and spirit. Congratulations to all players who impressed by demonstrating three hits! Junior D The Junior D team won teir third match on Wednesday afternoon, downing St Rita’s College in straight sets. The girls ran away convincingly with the first set before battling it out in the final two to keep their undefeated streak alive. The team have been improving with every training session this season and are working well as a team. Notable performances from Annetta Hile and Isabella Lovenitti. Junior E Won, through Forfeit . Results - 2 March U14 The Under 14’s had a tough game against the number one team in the competition. The team played well scoring a good goal, but Brigidine were very strong. Outstanding effort to all the girls for their determination and consistency. Coach: Oliver Chambers U15 The Under 15’s played a nail biting match against Brisbane Girls Grammar school and unfortunately experienced their first lost to BGS during the season. After a hard couple of training sessions the girls realised what they had to do on the weekend if they wanted to win. It was fair to say they were very aware of their individual roles in the pool taking out the first quarter 3 -1. After a strong and close second quarter half time it was 4 - 2. The start of the 3rd quarter came quickly but due to a lack of team concentration BGGS quickly scored 2 goals to even the score. Going into the last quarter the girls were leading 6-5 with 30 seconds to go BGGS gained an extra player and due to the confusion by Loreto a 5 metre penalty was awarded. Full time and all players had to be removed from the game for the shot. Just before the final whistle blew BGGS scored a goal to even the game . A very positive game for the girls considering they have never come close to this team before. I’m sure the girls will look forward to playing them in the final. Coach: James Duffy U 18’s team - Bye this week. CSGSSA SWIMMING CARNIVAL Monday, 11 March is the Catholic Girls’ Swimming Carnival at Chandler. All Year 8 and 12 students will be attending to support our Swim Team. This is a wonderful opportunity for Big Sisters and Little Sisters to get to know each other and for Year 12 students to induct Year 8 students into some important Loreto traditions, such as the College war cry. Attendance is compulsory on this day as on any other. Students who do attend feel very let down by other students who stay away without valid reason. We would like this to be an occasion to build community rather than damage it. All non-attendance will be checked. Students are not to bring magazines, or electronic devices such as IPods. They will be fully engaged in cheering on our swimmers. Dress for the day for spectators is perfect formal school uniform – hat is not required. Students in the swim team will receive a letter with specific details regarding events, uniform, arrival and departure times. All students should bring food and plenty of water. Only very limited canteen facilities will be available for a short time. Students will be travelling to and from the carnival by bus. No student will be able to leave from Chandler unless they bring a parental note to Ms Carty beforehand and a parent is there to collect them by 2.00pm. ST PETER’S LUTHERAN COLLEGE SWIMMING MEET Last Friday 1 March, 33 competitors from the Loreto College swim team competed at the St Peter’s Lutheran College Lead-Up Swim Meet. It was a very successful meet with the opportunity to compete in a 50m pool and practise the relay changeovers. Congratulations to the girls for their excellent behaviour and support of each other on the night. A special thank you to Year 10 girls for timekeeping. A reminder that there is compulsory swimming session on Wednesday morning and a Swim Squad Breakfast will be held on Friday 8 March at 7.15am. All girls will have a final relay practise Friday morning at 6.45am before breakfast. It is essential all swim team members must attend the session. Woken up during the night coughing, wheezing or out of breath?
Struggled to keep up with normal day-to-day activities?
Used your blue reliever puffer more than three times a week?
Felt uncertain or unsure about using your medications?
If so, these are all signs which may indicate that your asthma is not well controlled. If your asthma is limiting your quality of life, or you want to obtain more information about your asthma, please come along to a free Live Well with Asthma community workshop (see details below).
