Volume 23 - 5 August, 2014 Dear Parents and Students This week, I am away in Sydney attending a Loreto Principals’ Retreat with the Loreto Principals from Loreto Normanhurst (NSW), Kirribilli (NSW), Toorak (Vic), Ballarat (Vic), Marryatville (SA), Nedlands (WA) and John XXIII College (WA). Our retreat, the theme of which is “Mary Ward’s three touchstones: freedom, justice and sincerity: centred on relationships and grounded in truth”, is being led by Sr Angela Slattery IBVM. This Loreto community, as with the others, will most assuredly be in our hearts and prayers as we give priority time to reflection, companionable silence and ‘sisterly’ sharing and support. These annual retreat experiences ae both a blessing and a privilege. I thank you for your prayers as we seek to listen to the voice of God in our lives and our work.

REFLECTION The Mystery we call God is all around us. Everywhere. The great lesson of the spiritual life is to drink it in, in all its colours, all its shapes and all its tastes. “O taste and see that the Lord is good”, the Scriptures teach. It’s just a matter of learning to love each of the many ways of tasting God in whose mystery we dwell. “One cannot speak about mystery”, René Magritte writes. “One must be seized by it”. Joan Chittister The Art of Life

OPEN DAY – Sunday 10 August Our Open Day program commences at 10.00am this Sunday in the Mary Ward Centre. In anticipation I thank the staff, students and parent volunteers for helping to make this day possible. Please feel most welcome to encourage interested family or friends to attend.

SCIENCE WEEK This week at Loreto we celebrate Science Week led by Mrs Cody and members of the Science department. Activities include: a display of solar cookers made by the Science Club; a demonstration of robots, conundrums, rocket construction and a display of laboratory equipment. As a scientist myself, I am disappointed to be missing the week but I do hope and trust that the students will be actively involved and engaged. BEST WISHES 

We wish our Senior Volleyballers all the very best for their participation in the Senior Volleyball Schools’ Cup being held this weekend in Toowoomba.

Yours sincerely Cheryl Hamilton PRINCIPAL

Flexischools Loreto Tuckshop News The tuckshop has been operating very successfully using Flexischools since the beginning of Term 3. Students are able to access food and drink far more readily because lines move much more efficiently and quickly using this card operated system. We would highly recommend taking advantage of the Online Ordering facility which speeds up this process even more. You pay online and your daughter simply collects her lunch without even having to use her card. Some students have had some small issues but these are generally due to some minor errors that occurred when the Flexischools account and card were first setup. If you are setting up an account for the first time, or your daughter has had some issues, we have some hints for you on how to fix these. 1.

Ensure you link your daughter’s Loreto ID card to the account you have setup. When you link the card number you must use your daughter’s student number which begins with an ‘s’ for student eg. s1477323. Please use a lower case ‘s’ at the beginning of the student ID number.

2.

If you set a daily cash limit on this account your daughter will not be able to purchase anything that goes over this limit. You may like to review the tuckshop menu before you set this limit. If you do an online order this limit does not apply.

3.

There also needs to be sufficient funds in your Flexischools’ account if your daughter is to be able to buy from the tuckshop. You may consider enabling an auto top on your account once it reaches a certain level to alleviate this problem.

If you are having issues with your daughter using her card then it is best to contact the excellent help desk service that Flexischools offer by ringing 1300 361 769 or via their website www.flexischools.com.au Just a reminder that we are moving to a cashless tuckshop by the start of Term 4, 2014 so we would encourage you to look at setting up a Flexischools account to prepare for this transition. Drama Department Drama students have had the gift of a number of high-quality Drama performances this past week. Year 11 and 12 students attended “1984” at the Cremorne Theatre at Southbank and the experience was overwhelming. Shake ‘n Stir’s production powerfully presented George Orwell’s vision of a world controlled by Big Brother, providing a challenge to students to make connections between this play and life in contemporary Australia. On Thursday, Artslink visited Loreto with their production of “Ruby Moon” for Years 9, 10 and 11. The play was a most engaging example of Gothic Theatre based on the idea of a lost child. In subsequent Drama lessons, students have been keen to engage in discussions on the ideas presented in the play. Kerry Williams - Drama Coordinator

Music Open Day Help! On Sunday 10 August the College holds its annual Open Day. Each year, the Music Department runs a display highlighting the performance-based nature of our Year 7/8 Curriculum. The display is hosted by volunteers from the Year 9/10 music classes and at this stage I am extremely short on helpers! Students, please check your emails for details – the time commitment is less than two hours. Please contact Mr Langford urgently if you can assist. We need another five or six volunteers so we can run the displays in shifts and reduce your time commitment to just a single hour. Mr Smith’s Composition In week one of this term, the students of the Year 9 & 10 classes visited the new ABC studios at Southbank for a schools concert by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra played a new narrated work called “Mr Smith’s Composition” which took the audience on an irreverent and humorous journey through the process of writing a piece of music! The students thoroughly enjoyed the concert, which gave them a greater understanding of classical music and its creation. Ben Langford - Director of Music

Science News Already Term Three has been a busy term for the Science Department. Last Monday the Year 11 Physics class had a very successful trip to Dreamworld. The trip enabled students to collect data and learn first-hand about some of the concepts they have been studying in class. The data yielded from this trip contributes towards an extended response task for assessment. Also last week, a group of Year 12 Biology students attended an optional excursion to the University of Queensland's Integrated Pathology Learning Centre (IPLC) on Wednesday. The students were able to use their knowledge of body systems to identify human tissue specimens and learn about the effects of behavioural and environmental factors on health. It was a fascinating experience for all and a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about potential careers in the health sciences. We congratulate Sabrina Sydney in Year 11 who successfully completed the University of Queensland's SPARQ-ed (Students Performing Advanced Research Queensland) program at the Translational Research Institute. Over the July school holidays she completed a week-long immersion program that involved participants undertaking a project concentrating on mutations in a tumour suppressor gene and culminated in a presentation about their research. This was a fantastic opportunity for Sabrina to work with other students, researchers and lab personnel as well as gain valuable experience in medical research. Finally, this week is Science Week! We have a number of activities lined up including demonstrations of solar cookers constructed by students in the Science Club, robots, rocket construction and an astronomy night 6-8pm Thursday here on the oval. All students are welcome to come and be involved in the activities at lunch times and also to see our lab equipment which will be on display for the College Open Day. Year 10 Camp Medical and consent forms for the Year 10 Camp were distributed on Friday. We are looking forward to sharing a range of exciting and memorable experiences with the Year 10 group. Please ensure that forms are returned by Monday 11 August. Certain medical conditions require an additional form to provide more detailed medical information and medical certification from a doctor may also be required. Further information on Meebunbia (Camp Kokoda) can be found on their website: www.campkokoda.com.au Michelle Davidson - Year 10 Coordinator

Year 10 Deportment Update Parents collecting students from the Deportment classes on a Monday evening are asked to use Lade Street as the meeting and collection point. This will allow for the students to be safely and properly supervised together until parents arrive to collect their daughters. Michelle Davidson - Year 10 Coordinator

Co-Curricular Music Open Day Performances This Sunday 10 August, the Big Band and Junior Choir will perform at Loreto for Open Day. As only three parents between the two groups have contacted me to let me know of other commitments, I am expecting virtually 100% attendance from these two ensembles! All students have been advised that Big Band needs to meet in room 705 by 9:40am and will play from approximately 10:15am to 10:25am, after which they will be free to leave. Members of Junior Choir should meet in room 705 (next to the MWC stage) by 10:45am (please enter quietly through the Mezzanine entrance as at that time the school principal will be addressing prospective parents in the Hall). You will rehearse on the stage from 11:00am to approximately 12:30pm. QCMF Performance times for all groups have been listed in this newsletter for several weeks now (and again this week). Please take careful note of the ARRIVAL TIME for your daughter as it is very important that we meet in sufficient time to help the girls warm-up, tune-up and prepare to perform at their best. All Loreto groups will wear full academic uniform, with blazers and 70 denier navy blue stockings (NOT socks and hats are not required) except the following groups: Sorelle/Exit Stage Left/Big Band please wear all black with new performance uniform shirts as per recent performance at the St Catherine’s Fete; Guitar Ensembles 1 & 2 please wear all black as per normal. For new parents particularly, there is also some very useful information available at the following link: http://www.qcmf.com.au/guest-information-sheet/. Please carefully note that: (1) entry is paid (tickets are quite cheap and allow access to all seven QCMF venues – if you are there multiple days then the weekend pass is excellent value; (2) Parking is difficult – be sure to leave plenty of time to find street parking, walk into the school, find your venue, buy tickets and get inside well before your daughter’s performance time; (3) Venue doors are NEVER opened while a group is playing on stage so please do not arrive at the last minute as you may miss your daughter’s performance entirely! Concert Band Two As your arrival time is scheduled for 4:03 pm on Thursday 14 August, Loreto will be organising a bus to transport you to the Festival directly after school. Students should bring their uniform, instrument and music to school on Thursday morning and then meet Mrs Baldwin in the MWC Mezzanine directly following afternoon homeroom. It is expected that parents will collect their daughters from Villanova College after their 4:45 pm performance is completed. Clarinet Ensemble Two As your performance is scheduled for during the day on Friday 15 August, the College has organised transport both to and from the venue. Students will return to school in time for regular afternoon homeroom, and so will be able to make all normal after school commitments/transport arrangements. Guitar Ensemble Two Students in this ensemble are required to arrive at Villanova by 5:17 pm on Thursday 14 August. If any parents are concerned about getting their daughter to the venue by this time, please contact Mr Langford or Mrs Carr in the Music Department and we will endeavour to assist with transport arrangements. Rehearsal Changes Due to the Ekka holiday on Wednesday 13 August, rehearsals for some groups will be moved to other days next week. Conductors would be very appreciative if parents could please try to support these changes, as missing these final rehearsals before QCMF would significantly impact on each group’s preparation for the Festival. Flute Ensemble Two will rehearse at 7:15 am on Monday 11 August and String Ensemble will rehearse at 7:15 am on Friday 15 August next week.

Casa D’Amore Thank you to all those students who took the time last weekend to perform for the elderly residents of Casa D’Amore. The residents were very appreciative, thoroughly enjoying each item in the concert and talking about it for days afterwards. It is a shame that the informal venue did not allow students who were not on stage to watch the audience during the event – if you had been able to do so, you would have seen clearly in their expressions just how much the concert meant to them! Music Support Group The August Meeting of the parents’ Music Support Group will be held in Room 605 this Wednesday 6 August, starting at 7:30 pm. New members are always welcome! Congratulations to all the girls who have participated in the Netball program. Also a special thank you to the hard working coaches and umpires.

Vicki Wilson Cup Netball On Tuesday 29 July, the Open A Netball team represented Loreto in the Vicki Wilson Cup, an annual competition between high schools across Queensland. The Loreto girls played exceptionally well over the six rounds throughout the day, playing to the best of their abilities and beyond (all while battling sore feet), and performing as a cohesive and supportive team. The girls have improved immensely over the season and demonstrated their hard work and determination on the day. We would like to thank Mrs Logan, the coach, and Mrs Stevens for their continued support and role in such a wonderful day. A huge congratulations to the team on a brilliant effort and incredible display of netball at its finest! Mia Page and Melissa Roberts - Netball Captains

Please ensure you are at the field to take your player home five minutes after the game has finished. In the event of Wet Weather which causes games to be called off, the first item updated is the BMTA Wet weather line which is now available by ringing the main BMTA phone number (07 3397 5133) and pressing 1 to listen to the wet weather line information. An article will also be placed on Facebook and in the news section on the BMTA website-www.bmta.com.au.The decision on calling games off is generally made by about 3pm each day by BMTA Competition Staff and Groundsman. Should games need to be called off after this time, it becomes the decision of the BMTA Night Administrators after discussion with the Referee coordinator and BMTA Competition Manager. BMTA would notify the Loreto Coordinator ASAP once games have been called off. Then all Loreto players would be notified as per the “Phone tree” system. This system is also used in case of rain on Monday training. All players have received an email with the phone tree and instructions are in this email. Please see map for fields. Note: Fields 1 and 2 are not on the map but are clearly marked at Whites Hills Reserve. I wish all players a great season of Touch Football playing for Loreto College! Therese Begley - Coordinator

Businesses connected with our Loreto community, such as real estate agents, food and beverage suppliers, and retailers are invited to submit an expression of interest, to display their business at the festival. Business categories will be determined by ‘first-in-best-dressed’ and are imagined to include a 3 x 3 metre stand, logo displays and suitable promotional material. Please direct enquiries to Catherine Shipton, Community Relations & Development Manager, shiptonc@loreto.qld.edu.au or 3394 9957.

P & F News Meeting Tonight We would love to involve parents more in the activities of the P&F and are looking at ways of improving our communication. We have a dedicated new email address and how we use it will be discussed at our meeting tonight. We’ll also consider extending a new invitation to the new Member for Griffith Terri Butler to speak to the P&F given she is unable to attend tonight due to other commitments. Among other items on the agenda are strategic planning, the Father’s Day breakfast, Open Day and AGM nominations and potentially reports from the music support and sport support groups and year level parent representatives. As usual the meeting begins at 7pm in room 605 on the bottom floor of the Gonzaga Barry Building. Follow the path from the front gate past the Mary Ward Centre and keep veering right toward the lights. All are welcome. Garry West - P&F Secretary
