LORETO WINS INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY PERCENTAGE TROPHY To the absolute delight and joy of all involved, the Loreto Cross Country team won the all important PERCENTAGE TROPHY (BEIRNE CUP) at this year’s interschool event. Overall, we placed 4th in the aggregate of the Beirne Cup, with the 14 Years Age Group placing 3rd. We offer the girls and their wonderful coaches, Andrew Lulham & Clare Geraghty, our enthusias c congratula ons. Such an impressive win comes from hard work, commitment, team work and perseverance. Well done to all of the team. We are really proud of your efforts and your achievements.

GREAT GATSBY GALA BALL – CELEBRATING 85 YEARS
What an amazing night! We had an absolute ball revelling in the fun and the fashions of the glitzy 1920’s. I wish to thank our Community Rela ons & Development Manager, Catherine Shipton, for her superb coordina on and enthusias c involvement. From the moment the idea of this event was conceived, she set about making sure we would all have a night to remember – which we did! I also offer my sincere thanks to the P&F for their support and encouragement and to the musicians of Pepparazzi (starring Mr Langford) whose music made the night. Sincere thanks also go to Loreto’s suppor ng crew: Emma Beach, Gail Newman, Chris ne Kelly and the facili es team. Also a big thanks to our MC for the evening, Mrs Helen Radvan, who kept the evening flowing in a most enjoyable way. With much pleasure, on Saturday night, we launched our ‘Beyond Today’ Campaign presen ng those gathered with a taste of things to come in terms of Loreto’s future development. I thank the sponsors for their generous support and the many parents who also generously bid on auc on items in support of our future. 8 Blue, Green and White were given the task to explore sayings that related to the “head”. They then had to select four of these sayings and experiment with four different ways the sayings could be represented symbolically. Their selected design was then created in clay. This resulted in a collection of expressive sculptures representing sayings such as “Thinking Outside the Box”, Leonie McCulkin - Art Coordinator “Hot Head” and “Head Screwed On”. Some of their artwork is presented below.

Loreto Music Festival Could all finalists please urgently submit copies of their music and accompanist’s music (if required) to Mrs Carr in the Music Office? There are still quite a number of students who have not done this and we cannot finalise the program or the accompanist rehearsal schedule until we have music from all finalists! All finalists who are using the College provided accompanist will have rehearsals scheduled during Tuesday 18 June. A schedule for these rehearsals will be published as soon as possible.

QCMF Don’t forget that all Loreto Ensembles (except Beginner Brass Ensemble and the String Quartet) will be performing at the Catholic Colleges Music Festival between Thursday 15 and Sunday 18 August. We will not have exact times for these performances until the Festival Schedule is released at the start of Term Three. However, this is one of our three main performance opportunities for the year and the only Adjudicated Festival that most groups enter so it is our expectation that all students will be available for the QCMF weekend.

Blood Brothers is a musical that has run in London’s West End for the past 24 years (over 10,000 performances!). Based loosely on a book by Alexandre Dumas (Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers) it tells the story of twin brothers separated at birth. fà i|ÇvxÇà wx ctâÄ axãá Our thanks to the members who worked on roster at the Mission Day fete. They sold ice cream, spiders and drinks. Their efforts were hugely successful and the proceeds will go mainly to the work of IBVM Sisters in Africa and the rest to the local St Vinnies for their work with the homeless or families. Thanks to all students involved! A special mention goes to Mrs McEneny in the Tuckshop for her support and for the supply of the ice cream and drinks. Our Winter Appeal is now underway. Earlier in the year some of our members visited the St Vinnies Family Support Centre at Inala. They saw first-hand the need for food items especially in winter. A collection box has been placed in the office for tins of chunky soup and for blankets. They know Loreto College well at Inala St Vinnies and always welcome our efforts to assist. Five of our Year 11 members recently worked at the Ozcare Men’s Hostel at South Brisbane. They were shown over the facility which assists large numbers of men, providing a place to live while they are finding work, new skills etc. Our members served on the food race for the evening meal and then cleaned up the tables. If students are being picked up from Mitchelton, they must provide a signed note to Mr Jones, no later than the morning of the fixture. The away teams will return home at 5:45pm depending on the traffic. The Open C and Junior C teams both play Brigidine at Annerley Soccer Club, 98 Victoria Terrace, Annerley. The home games will finish at 5:00pm and students need to be picked up at the venue. Students are reminded to bring their uniform, shin pads, mouth guards and water bottles. Good luck! Soccer Results - Round 4 Junior C Last Wednesday saw the Junior C team give 100% . The girls fought their hardest throughout the whole game, despite losing 3 - 0 and improved as the game progressed. The team started to pass the ball more and were also better at positioning themselves on the field. Well done! Luke Duncan - Coach Junior A The Loreto Junior A's played Lourdes Hill this week, and had another 4 - 0 win. With a match and a couple of training sessions under their belt, the girls showed some good improvement from the first game and dominated most of the match. The team created a large number of chances and restricted Lourdes Hill to just three shots all game, which is a great effort. There were some fantastic passages of play during the match, with the highlight being the passing play down the right hand side of the field during the first half, which the Lourdes Hill team struggled to defend against. The Junior A's have made a great start to the year, but understand they need to continue working hard as a team, in order to keep improving. Anthony Costa - Coach Open A After the second round was washed out, and the points were shared, the Open A team faced Mt Alvernia, last year's Grand Final winners in Round 3. Lady Luck was not on our side and the opposition scored a quick goal, followed by a second one shortly before the half-time break. We restructured our team, focusing on attack which was combated by the opposition's coach, as they strengthened their defence. Whilst the girls played much better football during the second half we were unable to take our chances and equalise, making the opposition’s victory well deserved. Attendance at training sessions is required for the team to become more competitive and to ensure our future success at winning games. Richard Hamernik - Coach
Tennis Finals - Results Congratulations to the D1, D3, D5, C3, B4 and B7 teams who competed in the Grand Final of the tennis competition on Sunday 2June at the QLD Tennis Centre, Tennyson. The D and E grades played from 8am to 11.30 am. All teams played well with D1 wining their Division. Well done to Matilda Ingram, Brigitte Mastry, Constantina Xynias and Frances Wong in Year 9 from D1 Grade who were awarded the Catholic Leader Shield for 2013. Congratulations to Brigitte Mastry who won the Mother Vincent Whitty Memorial Cup for D Grade (Year 9 Blue), Matilda Ingram (Year 9 Gold) was awarded Runner Up for this award. The Mother Vincent Memorial Cup is awarded to the player with the best performance in a Premiership team. The A, B and C grade teams began at 12.00 noon. The C3 team with Emily Thomas (Captain), Nikki Foley, Emi Biazos, Nicola Tracey and Tiarna Brock won their Division. The B4 team with Anita George (Captain), Martia George, Chantel Morris, Bridget Clark and Marcie Bakker had a nail biting match and were runners up in their competition. Well done to the B7 team with Meg Roberts (Captain), Lauren Higgins, Jessica Martinez, Adriana Makras, Mary-Kate Dennis and Ashleigh Mullins who won their Division. Congratulations to all tennis players from Loreto College and particularly the captains of each team who work tirelessly to keep their team organised. I was very proud of the way the girls performed in the competition. A sincere thank you to Kate Oliver and Charlotte McMahon who worked as our Court Coordinators and Mrs Oliver, Mrs Wilkinson and Mr Deveson for their ongoing support and assistance throughout the season as well as our coaches from Lifetime Tennis. Netball Results - 29 May Open A - Defeated by Brigidine College 32 - 19. On a bleak and cold afternoon the flu season got the better of us with several girls soldiering on despite coughs and runny noses. We started well, winning the first quarter but were down by three at half time. The score tells the rest of the story and it wasn’t pretty to watch. The girls stood firm as a team and supported each other to the last whistle. They were gracious in defeat and by the time we got on the bus, attention was on the good wins achieved by other Loreto teams. Our turn next week! Special mention goes to Kristen Feuerriegal for determined defensive efforts and Aimee Paholski for good movement around the circle and a smooth shot when we could get the ball to her. A reminder that training will continue for the Open A team through until holidays. Coach - Mrs Meg Logan Open B - Defeated Brigidine 17 - 6. After the loss in the first round, the girls were determined to prove they were not a team to be taken lightly. From the first whistle they played as a unit, fighting for each ball and incorporating what they've been working on at training throughout the entire game. Their transition to defence was flawless, resulting in numerous turnovers that they worked seamlessly down to our shooters, each time being rewarded with a goal! Special mention must go to Claudia Miotti for her ‘never say die’ attitude and Meg for playing a smart and consistent game. Coach - Larissa Hughes Open C - Played Mary Mackillop and won 17 - 10. Emily McMahon had a great game shooting and Kaitlyn Bell displayed great versatility playing in the centre court. Coach - Karen Holahan Open D - BYE Intermediate A - Had a very challenging game against St Rita's, unfortunately losing 31 - 12. They fought all the way to the end improving with each quarter. Intermediate B - Despite the 22 - 16 loss to Mt Alvernia, the girls displayed admirable determination and considerable improvement from their first game. A slow start unfortunately meant the girls had to fight from behind the entire game. Strong defensive efforts by Lauren Gleed, versatility in the centre court by Georgia Garrett and sharp shooting from Georgia Burge, enabled the team to have a chance in the game. Coach - Bridget O’Connor Intermediate C - The team displayed great teamwork and enthusiasm this week, helping to contribute to their second win of the season against Brigidine. It was pleasing to hear constant encouragement between the girls throughout the game despite missing three players. Special mention goes to Rachel for her excellent defence and rebound work! Keep it up girls! Coach - Ashleigh O’Connor Intermediate D - This week proved to be another fantastic game for the Loreto Intermediate D Team, defeating Brigidine 42 - 1. Even with the bare minimum of players, the team displayed incredible teamwork and ball skills. The team are definitely improving each week. As a reward for such a fantastic game, the girls chose their own positions for the final quarter. Playing in positions they normally wouldn't was a great test to show off their overall netball skills. All girls had a fantastic game! Once again, well done! Coach - Emma Macleod Intermediate E - The girls played a great attacking and defensive game against Mt Alvernia which resulted in a 42 - 2 win! Ashley Parker was excellent in defence gaining many turnovers. The team worked well together and are looking forward with enthusiasm to the rest of the season. Well done girls! Coach - Briony Logan Intermediate F (1) - Played Mt Alvernia and won 30 - 4. Great work from all the girls, with excellent shooting from Imogen Day and Amanda Hansen. Well done girls. Coach - Kate Mullins Intermediate F (2) - Had a solid win over Mt Alvernia 24 - 5. Overall the girls all worked really hard in defense. However our attacks were the stars this week. Tayla Jansen was a stand out, working around the circle and directing play. Great work girls! Coach - Hannah Fowler Junior A - Were defeated by San Sisto, who had a very strong defence. Well done to Kristina Trigenis was very strong in the offence. The girls played hard and caught up significantly in the last quarter and almost took the game. Good effort girls! Thank you to Ms Veitch for filling in as coach on the day. Coach - Lyn Dixon Junior B - Coming off a loss last week, the girls were determined and committed in defeating a very tall Mary McKillop team. The circle defence had an outstanding game which had a flow on effect right down the court, with our centre court and shooters turning over some much needed balls as well. Feeds into the circle were accurate and allowed for our shooters to convert into points. Great improvement from last week’s game allowed the girls to celebrate the successful win. Excellent Effort! Coach - Clare Gill Junior C - Had a tougher match this week, losing to Mt St Michael's 14 - 4. Fantastic centre court work, in both attack and defence by Pip Leask and Elena Stamatiou. Coach - Stephanie Esprester Junior D - Defeated Our Lady's College 25 - 7. It was an exciting game in which there was great improvement in this team's ability to get the ball down the court and scored almost double the points compared with our last game. Central to this improvement in the centre court was Caitlyn Faux, who was clearing beautifully and then making strong forward leads. She also showed great versatility in answering the call to play Goal Keeper! Madeline Jones was prolific in goal scoring. Her positional play was excellent and she contributed 11 goals to our scoreline! Coaches - Mrs Jacqui Gold and Sarah Pettiford
Athletics Training for Athletics will begin on 11 June 2013. There will be a training session at QE11 directly after school for all disciplines on Tuesday 11 and 18 June. A bus will take the girls to the QE11 stadium and return to Loreto College at 5.30pm. The Middle Distance training times (at Loreto) are as follows: Thursday 13 June 6.45am to 8.00am and 3.30pm to 4.45pm and Monday 17 June3.30pm - 4.45pm (Compulsory). The Sprinters will have training on Monday and Thursday afternoon from 3.30pm to 4.45pm. Throws and Jump sessions will be publicised in the next newsletter.
