Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families have endured the pain and loss of loved ones, through the separation of children from their families. We are sorry and ask Your forgiveness. NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK At Assembly this week we marked, through prayer, our participation and support for National Reconciliation Week as this is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to contribute to building a reconciled Australia. National Reconciliation Week started as the Week of Prayer for Reconciliation in 1993 and was supported by Australia’s major religious groups. Under the guidance of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation (now Reconciliation Australia), it evolved into the week-long celebration that it is today. Every year, it is held between two significant milestones in Australia’s history, May 27 and June 3. May 27 is the anniversary of the 1967 referendum in which more than 90 per cent of Australians voted ‘Yes’ to count Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census and give the Australian Government the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The day before National Reconciliation Week, 26 May, is National Sorry Day, which was first held in Sydney in 1998 and is now commemorated nationally to remember and honour the Stolen Generations. June 3 marks the historic 1992 Mabo decision in which the High Court of Australia recognised native title – the recognition that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights over their lands did survive British colonisation. The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2014 is Let’s Walk the Talk, so Australians across the nation can start putting their words into action. There are many ways to celebrate National Reconciliation Week and to ‘walk the talk’ by contributing to the wider effort to build a reconciled Australia. Whenever people come together and share conversations, reconciliation takes another step forward. (Courtesy of www.reconciliation.org.au ) I thank the Year 12 Multicultural Council and the Loreto Indigenous Awareness Committee for their efforts in bringing the importance of this week to our attention. P&F MASQUERADE BALL It is with regret that I inform our community that the Loreto P&F Masquerade Ball has not attracted enough bookings for us to continue with this particular event. After the great success of last year’s ball, we would have been thrilled to bring to our Parents, alumni and sponsors another evening of fun and entertainment, however an event such as this is only successful with a reasonable patronage. Whilst this is disappointing and we are still to reach our RSVP date, we would normally expect to see the bulk of bookings prior to this stage and feel it would be irresponsible to simply hope and ‘cross our fingers’. Both the College and the P&F will liaise further and we look forward to bringing our community together at another event soon. We apologise if this causes any inconvenience. CONGRATULATIONS To Helena Beiers (Year 9) on her selection to compete in the 13-19 Years QSS State Cross Country Championships being held in Toowoomba in July. We wish Helena every success.

Edwina was recognised by the Speech and Drama Teachers Association of Queensland for gaining the highest mark in her AMEB and TCL Speech & Drama Performance examination in 2013. Well done, Edwina.
To Loreto Tennis Teams on the 2014 season where Loreto was awarded Second Place in the CaSSSA Percentage Trophy and Third Place overall. This is a marvellous effort; winning four premierships with four runners-up placements. Thanks to all coaches and Mrs Stevens for her coordination.

The College has been advised by Brisbane City Council (BCC) that they will be maintaining a presence around the College with a view to enforcing parking restrictions within the school zones. They have advised that the primary aim is to ensure the safety of students and of others and that PARKING FINES MAY BE ISSUED IN CASES WHERE ILLEGAL PARKING PRACTICES ARE OBSERVED. The College supports the BCC in this initiative and takes this opportunity to remind all who park around the College that the safety of students and respect for the local residents are paramount. The cooperation of all drivers in complying with parking restrictions is appreciated. Art Department Year Twelve have completed their first Body of Work. Students worked with the concept The Human Condition- the “Intrinsic� and developed their own focus for what was a student directed exploration of ideas and media. The students are to be congratulated on the depth of thought given to the task and the diversity of imagery and use of media. Career News Exercise Science The Australian Catholic University is offering a ‘taste test’ during the school holidays from 1 – 3 July for students who would like to study the Certificate in Exercise Science in 2015. Music Department Year 8 Music It is starting to become hard to find a spare room in the Music Department at lunchtime – everywhere you turn there are Year 8s practicing guitar and drums! Next term we move to bass guitar, duets and then working in full bands. Year 9/10 Bands Just two weeks until the Year 10 bands go to the Ghostgum Recording Studio to professionally record their songs for assessment the week after exams. Mrs Nielson’s Class will go on Thursday 19 June and Mr Langford’s Class on Tuesday 17 June. Parents will soon receive a letter asking for assistance with providing transport to and from the venue (Cannon Hill Anglican College) and any assistance would be most appreciated. Year 11 Having now finalised our composition tasks, students are focussed on finishing off their Extended Responses. They have chosen some really interesting and diverse pieces of music to analyse, from Beethoven sonatas and Mozart Symphonies right through to Elton John ballads, musical songs from Wicked & Frozen and Piazzolla Tangos! Year 10 Subject Selection For the remainder of this term and the first few weeks of Term Three, the Year 10 students will participate in the Subject Selection process for Year 11, 2015. The Deputy Principal - Curriculum, Mr Pat Elsworthy, will speak to the students during PD on Thursday 5 June and, at other allocated times, the Subject Coordinators will speak to the students about the subjects on offer in the Senior School. A Subject Selection evening will be held for parents and students on Monday 4 August. This will be a valuable opportunity to talk with Subject Coordinators and teachers of Year 11 and 12 subjects to gain more information about the Senior Courses on offer. Co-Curricular Music Sorelle, Exit Stage left, Big Band These three Loreto groups will be performing at the St Catherine’s School Fete on Sunday 22 June. Students should arrive in time to meet at the St Catherine’s Church car park (Newham Road, Wishart) by 12PM. We will be playing from 12:20pm to 1:30pm (Big Band first, then Exit Stage Left and finishing with Sorelle. For this event, students will wear black pants and black shirts with a Loreto Crest (this will be our new performance uniform for these groups – a letter regarding purchasing the shirt will be distributed to students early next week).

Bullhorn Workshop Friday afternoon saw our two school concert bands complete a workshop with Brisbane-based Nu-Wave Brass Band “Bullhorn”. The students listened to a short concert by the band, before band members led them in sectionals learning one of their original tracks “Badagada”. At the rehearsal, all 80 students played through Badagada complete with freestyle rapping by MC Roman. What a fantastic rehearsal! Music Support Group The next MSG Meeting will be held this week on Wednesday 11 June starting at 7:30 pm. All parents of Loreto Music students are most welcome to attend. Year 10 Marist Dancing The final dance for Year 10 Marist Dancing is being held Tuesday night 3 June at Riverside Receptions at New Farm. The students have learnt a lot over the past four weeks and I’m sure they will find the final night an enjoyable and memorable experience. Students need to be at the Loreto Service Area at 6.30pm and they will return to the college at 10.30pm. SRC Walkathon End Human Trafficking’ - Monday 23 June In the last week of Term 2 on Monday 23 June is Loreto’s Walkathon. This event is in support of Project Futures: End Human Trafficking which works to create an empowered world where every person can take action against human trafficking and exploitation. In the year of sincerity, we are inviting every student to participate dressed as an inspirational women from any time under the theme “Sincerity Sisters.” There will be a best dressed award available for one girl from each house. The walk will take place over two hours and will finish with a lap of the oval. On this lap, girls will be required to carry two 2litre bottles of water, to symbolise the mental and physical toll that slavery places on its victims. The aim of the afternoon will be to raise awareness and funding for programs dedicated to combating human trafficking and sexual exploitation globally. A page has been set up and we would like to encourage you to support this cause. Even the smallest donation would be appreciated and will mean a world of difference to those who benefit from the Project Futures charity programs. A bus will take the girls to the QE11 stadium and return to Loreto College at 5.30pm. Middle Distance training times are as follows at Loreto: Thursday 5, 19 and 26 June from 6.45am to 8.00am and 3.30pm to 4.45pm. Monday 23 June from 3.30pm to 4.45pm. Sprint training times are as follows: Thursday 5, 19 and 26 June from 3.30pm to 4.45pm Monday 23 June from 3.30pm to 4.45pm. P & F News Guest Speaker - P&F Meeting There’s room for improvement in everything we do; P&F meetings are no exception. We’ll learn more on Tuesday when the Executive Director of the Federation of Parents & Friends Federation of Catholic Schools in Queensland is our guest speaker. Carmel Nash has kindly accepted our invitation to advise us what delegates learnt at the last state conference including how to hold more effective meetings. The meeting starts at 7pm in room 605 on the bottom floor of the Gonzaga Barry Building. How do you find it?
