Volume 2 - 3 February, 2015 Dear Parents & Students It was my privilege over the weekend to spend time in Melbourne attending the National Loreto Province Assembly with many Loreto sisters and their “wider circle of friends” such as Loreto Principals, Chairs of Council and the National Education Council Board members. Set your hearts on his Kingdom first, and on God’s saving justice, and all these other things will be given you as well. Matthew 6:33 The purpose of this meeting was to report back to the Australian and South East Asia Province on the “calls” that came from the International IBVM General Congregation (GC) held at Loyola in Spain in September last year. These are the five “calls” that the GC discerned: As Mary Ward companions moved by the person of Jesus and the needs of our world today we seek to:
Reclaim the freshness of the Gospel, allowing Jesus to transform our lives.
Bring those forced to live in poverty to the centre of our life and ministry.
Go where the need is greatest.
Live sustainably, discerning what is enough.
Create the oneness that moves us across boundaries.
Acknowledging vulnerability and fragility we turn to Jesus knowing that “. . . all we need we will find in Him.” Mary Ward
As a Mary Ward community, all of those involved in and connected with our school are invited to take up these calls to action in “seeking truth and doing justice.”
Another important aspect to come out of the International General Congregation of the IBVM was the adoption of an IBVM “Corporate Stance” on Human Trafficking which reads:
Justice
Freedom
VERITY
Sincerity
Felicity

As members of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, an international and multicultural congregation of women religious, we pledge to work for the eradication of all forms of human trafficking and its causes, particularly among women and children, wherever we live and minister.
The issue: Human trafficking is a modern day form of slavery wounding women, men and children around the globe by recruiting, harbouring or transporting them by force, fraud or coercion. It is the second largest crime in the world generating billions of dollars for traffickers while victimizing millions of people some as young as four years of age. An estimated 20.9 million women, men and children worldwide are victims of international traffickers. This number reflects those within our borders and across international borders. Victims can be found in domestic servitude, commercial sex industry, hotel and restaurant services, sweatshops, construction, agriculture, mail order brides, child soldiers, panhandling, as well as the harvesting of organs and illegal adoptions. This crime will continue to exist as long as the demand is high and financially profitable for the traffickers. Human trafficking exists in all the places where IBVM members, associates and co-workers live and minister. IBVM members are working with others in education, advocacy, prevention, prayer and other ways to address the issue of human trafficking. We add our voice and actions to those of many other religious congregations and civil society NGOs. This Sunday, 8 February, is the World Day of Prayer against human trafficking. “Trafficking in persons is a crime against humanity. We must join forces to free victims and stop this crime which is increasingly aggressive, that threatens, in addition to individuals, the founding values of society and all security and international justice, as well as the economy, the family structure and social life.” Pope Francis, December 12, 2013 Let us remember this critical cause in our prayers this weekend. INVITATION Our Opening College Mass will be held this Thursday in the Mary Ward Centre at 11.00am, with the commissioning of our Year 12 Leaders. As always, parents are warmly invited to join us. However, with the larger number of students, we expect the seating may be somewhat “tighter” than usual. Parents are thus invited to join us upstairs in the Mezzanine area. CONDOLENCES
To Georgia Bishop-Cash (Year 9) and her family on the passing of her Grandfather on Sunday. May he rest eternally in God’s loving peace. Amen.
To Adrijana Bukarica (Year 12) and her family on the passing of her Grandmother recently. May she rest lovingly at peace with our most gracious God. Amen.
Yours sincerely

Parking around the College & Drop-Off / Collection of Students As we start the new school year, it is appropriate to remind parents and others of the need to act safely when driving around the College grounds and of the need to comply with parking restrictions that are in place. Brisbane City Council has advised that following on from the 2014 Parking Taskforce report, they will be working with schools to develop traffic management strategies with the aim of creating safer parking areas, implementing educational programs and conducting more parking enforcement. They are also looking at creating standardised, clearer signage for school drop off zones. In addition, BCC has advised that they will be rolling out a number of high-visibility traffic enforcement vehicles, which would be used for parking enforcement at schools experiencing traffic congestion, to Improve compliance and safety. They advise that Council officers will be out in force with a very noticeable presence to encourage motorists to drive and park safely. BCC has listed 24 schools that will be targeted during Term 1, 2015 and Loreto College Coorparoo is on that list. As a result we can expect to see an increase in parking enforcement during that time. The College is fully supportive of the Council’s initiative and will continue to work closely with the Taskforce and the local Councillor, Ian McKenzie, to improve traffic and parking around the College with the aim of ensuring safety of students, staff and others. All members of our community are asked to assist in the safe movement of traffic and parking around the College by:
Complying with all parking restrictions including “No Standing” areas and 2 minute limits at drop off and pick up times;
Refraining from unsafe parking practices such as parking across intersections, double parking etc; and
Respecting the rights of residents in the area.
Clearly designated drop off/pick up areas currently exist on either side of the front driveway in Cavendish Road and behind the College in Lade Street. Your continued support of safe driving and parking around the College will be appreciated.

Class, Individual and Sister Photos A reminder that Class, individual, and sisters’ photos will be taken this Friday 6 February. A separate flyer/envelope was sent home explaining the products available and payment methods. Each envelope has a unique code printed on it which is required for each student to place an order. If you wish to have a family photo taken, please remember to collect a Sibling/ Family Photo Envelope from Mrs Bongaarts at the College Office. Once orders are completed you must ensure that each student returns her own envelope even if payment is made in the eldest child’s envelope. Please return these envelopes plus your individual photo order on the photo day Friday 6 February. Please do not return these to the College Office as it is not a collection point. Advancelife have now introduced ‘Online Ordering’. School photos can now be ordered and paid for using a secure online Web Portal. Please note: Photos can still be purchased using an envelope. To place your order visit www.advancedlife.com.au and enter the code—RNVLJWR1E. A full set of instructions can also be found printed on the envelopes supplied by advancedlife. All Online Orders should be placed on or before the day of photography. Please Note: Once orders are closed a LATE FEE will apply. All Online Orders placed through the Web Portal will be returned to school for collection. Girls are to wear full school uniform, clean and tidy, hair tied up appropriately, shoes polished for the photo. Thank you.
Year 8 and Year 10 Vaccination Consent Forms All Year 8 students were given a consent form for Boostrix, Varicella (Chickenpox) and HPV Vaccinations on Wednesday 28 January. A free booster dose of adult / adolescent diphtheria-tetanus– pertussis (Whooping Cough) vaccine will be offered in the school based vaccination program for every Year 8 student. Year 8 will have their first dose of HPV and their Boostrix vaccinations on Tuesday 3 March at 9.00am, therefore it is imperative that students return the forms by 8.30am FRIDAY 6 February, otherwise they will miss the opportunity to have the vaccination. The Varicella and second HPV vaccinations will take place on Thursday 7 May at 1.30pm. The final HPV vaccination will be given on Monday 26 October. Please note that Year 8 students cannot have the 2nd or 3rd HPV vaccination unless the first one has been administered. Year 10 students were given a consent for Diphteria, Tetanus and Pertussis (Whooping Cough). It is very important these forms are completed and returned to the College Office by 8.30am FRIDAY 6 February. The Year 10 vaccination will be given on Tuesday 3 March and it is highly recommended that they receive this injection as a recent tetanus vaccination is a requirement to be able to attend the Year 10 Camp later this year. This is a free service provided by the Brisbane City Council. Parents are reminded to sign and return these forms even if you do not wish your daughter to receive this vaccination. Completed forms will be collected via courier from the College main reception on Monday 9 February. Thank you. Helen Carty - Deputy Principal - Pastoral Care

Music News Music Camp What a fantastic weekend! I hope all the students enjoyed their musical introduction to the year. I have fantastic feedback on your performances at Sunday afternoon’s concert, and also lovely comments from all the clinicians about your behaviour, enthusiasm and willingness to participate – well done. I think we should all take an opportunity over the next few days to thank both the staff (Mrs Murfett, Mrs Nielson, Ms Engler, Dr Svoboda, Mr Gante & Mrs Duncan) AND the parents (Mrs Larkin, Mrs Gleed, Mr Isaac, Mrs Thompson & Mrs Clarke) for coming away with us and helping make the camp such a great experience. Important changes to our Concert Calendar! Each year, more and more students become involved in the music program, meaning we have gradually been adding more and more ensembles to cater for all interests and ability levels. While I am sure everyone agrees that the concerts the groups put on each year are highly musical and enjoyable, they have also been getting longer to accommodate these increases. In Semester One this year, we are going to trial splitting into THREE concerts, instead of two. The advantages of doing so will include:
each concert will only have 6 to 8 ensembles (meaning overall length will be shorter!);
groups chosen to perform at each concert will be carefully selected for cohesiveness of stage requirements (meaning stage changes will be quicker and concerts will be shorter!);
shorter concerts will mean we will not need an intermission (making the overall length even shorter – are you noticing a theme here?);
shorter concerts will allow us to start a fraction later, making it easier for staff, students and parents to both eat dinner and arrive on time;
we will still aim for a nice early finish, particularly with mid-week concerts.
For all three concerts we will ask students to arrive by 6.00pm (at this time supper and a bar will be provided for parents as there will be no intermission), with the performances beginning at 6:30 pm and finishing between 8.00pm and 8:30 pm. While three ensemble concerts will mean some students will need to attend three times, we expect that there will be many others that need only come to just one or two. After trialling this new concert calendar in Semester One we would welcome feedback from parents. At this stage our dates for Semester Two (August QCMF, October Music Night & Live & Wired) remain unchanged until we judge the success of this experiment. Our concerts for Semester One will be: Friday 24 April (Mary Ward Centre) Autumn Concert One (Big Band, Exit Stage Left, Sorelle, Percussion Ensembles One & Two, Junior Choir, Senior Choir, Chorale) Tuesday 28 April (Cruci) Autumn Concert Two (Flute Ensembles One & Two, Clarinet Ensembles One & Two, Saxophone Ensemble, Improvised Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Strings) Friday 8 May (Mary Ward Centre) Autumn Concert Three (Concert Bands One & Two, String Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Guitar Ensembles One & Two) Private Tuition Absences As we start a new year of private tuition, could I please remind all students and parents of the following important procedures for absences from lessons (as outlined in the Private Tuition Application Form)?
If a student knows in advance that she is unable to attend her lesson (e.g because of a school excursion, sports day, exam etc.) she must contact her music teacher at least 24 hours prior to the lesson.
If a student is ill on the morning of her lesson, she should phone the music teacher either at home or on their mobile phone. (At the beginning of the year students should negotiate with their teacher a suitable time to telephone and obtain the teacher’s home/mobile phone number.)
If the teacher cannot be contacted, parents should ring the school (3394 9999) before 8.00 a.m. and leave a message.
If the music teacher is not informed of a student’s absence, the usual fee will be charged and parents will be contacted in writing. If a lesson is missed through illness or some other legitimate reason, the teacher will make up [or refund] the lesson, provided the above steps have been followed and the teacher has been informed in advance. Honour Pockets If your daughter has one of the new style blazers and received an Honour Pocket at the end of last year I am now collecting blazers to have the embroidery done. All blazers need to be handed into the service area by Friday 13 February so that they can be sent away to Ranier in Sydney who do the embroidery. Blazers need to be dry cleaned, have owner’s name clearly marked on them and the letter stating what embroidery is to be done attached . A table of costs is included in the newsletter. Payment details are still being finalised with Ranier and you will be notified as soon as this is available as to the payment options. Ranier will only accept blazers for embroidery twice a year in Terms 1 & 4 so if your blazer is not handed in on time it will not be sent away till Term 4. Any queries please contact me at school. Year 11 Parent Facebook group The class of 2016 (current Year 11's) have a parents’ Facebook group. This is a useful way to keep parents updated on Year 11 social gatherings and to receive feedback. It can also be helpful to keep track of parents once girls have graduated and wish to organise school reunions. If you would like to join, please send me a friend request on Facebook and once I add you as a friend I can then add you to the group. Thank you. Julia Gough -Year 11 Parent Representative

P&F Meeting Would you like to play a more active role in your daughter’s education and the Loreto community and help shape the direction of the school? The Loreto Parents and Friends Association (P&F) offers you that opportunity. You can attend the first meeting of the P&F tonight (Tuesday 3 February 2015). If your only experience of a P&F meeting is from primary school, you may find this is a more relaxed forum, particularly tonight as it comes with the chance to meet P&F committee members, parents, teachers and staff representatives over wine and cheese. All are welcome to attend, and particularly new Year 7 and 8 parents. Come to the new Cruci building near the driveway on Cavendish Road. Please note this is a different venue to last year.
Welcome BBQ All parents are invited to join us for the P&F Parent Welcome BBQ to be held this Sunday 8 February from 4.00pm - 6.00pm in the Undercroft. This family fun get-together will be larger than normal with the first intake of Year 7 and the new Year 8 students and their families joining us. This is a great forum for meeting other parents and P&F members. Come along and hear what the committee can do for you. Whilst we appreciate how busy everyone is, if you plan to attend this event, for catering purposes it is essential that you RSVP to Trish Willing at willingp@loreto.qld.edu.au or complete the tear off slip below and return to the school office by Wednesday 4 February. BYO drinks and spare chairs. Thank you.
Calling for Year Level Representatives Like to volunteer as a 2015 Year Level Representative? We are especially looking for parent volunteers for Year 7, 8 and Year 12. The job involves organising social events for parents, held at the school, your home or an external venue such as a restaurant, cafe or bar. If you are holding an event at a private home, we will provide you with a copy of the GUIDELINES FOR HOLDING FUNCTIONS AT PRIVATE RESIDENCES. Promoting your events is as simple as placing an advertisement in the weekly Loreto newsletter. You can put together your own advert or we can help you. If you are interested in becoming a Year Level Representative, come along to the first meeting and/or please complete the attached form below or contact Trish Willing on 3394 9999 or via willingp@loreto.qld.edu.au Garry West - P&F Secretary
