Parent /Student/Homeroom Teacher Interviews On Tuesday 5 May we will be conducting interviews for each student and her parent/s with one of her Homeroom teachers. The purpose of this interview is to reflect on the student’s progress and to make positive and practical plans for the future. The interviews will have a slightly different focus depending on the student’s Year Level, eg Year 7’s and 8’s will reflect on the process of settling into secondary school and Year 11’s on their adjustment to senior schooling. The Year 10 interviews will begin to focus on the development of each student’s Senior Education Training Plan. Letters, Interim Reports and instructions for booking interview times on-line via Parent Lounge will be distributed to students on Wednesday 1 April or posted by Wednesday 8 April. Please email Mrs Robyn McKeon mckeonr@loreto.qld.edu.au or telephone the school office after Monday 20 April if this material does not arrive. Interviews will be conducted between 1.30 pm and 6.30 pm and will be for approximately 15 minutes. Classes will conclude at 12.35 pm. Students may go home or be supervised at school until 3.20pm. This interview is in addition to the Parent/ Student/Subject Teacher interviews held in July when parents have the opportunity to talk with each of their daughter’s teachers about her progress in particular subjects. Drama News Years 10 - 12 Theatre Production Drama students who expressed interest in being involved in this year’s commissioned theatre production are invited to meet professional playwright, Victoria Carless, on Tuesday 21 April between 3.30pm – 5.00pm in room 411. In this session we will hear Victoria’s initial ideas for the play and will be able to brainstorm the theme of Verity. Throughout Term 2, Victoria will send us drafts of scenes to workshop and we will provide her with feedback. This collaborative process will continue until we have a complete script near the end the semester. Audition information will be published at a later date. Year 9 and 10 Drama On Wednesday, 22 April, all students who study Drama in Years 9 and 10 will attend an incursion to see the live performance of the play, TAG, presented by Shake and Stir theatre company. On average, most young people are consuming up to 10 hours of online content each day. Tag examines the ups and downs of a life becoming increasingly entwined with the virtual and the ease with which situations online can be manipulated to the detriment of those involved. Developed from true stories shared by students across the country, Tag presents various characters as they deal with their online addictions and unveils some serious repercussions across a plethora of social media sites including Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube and Twitter. Tag will encourage students to consider the use of technology in their day-to-day lives and the potentially harmful consequences of a life lived basking in the warm glow of a screen. This relevant and thought-provoking production will form the basis for the written component of Drama assessment in Term Two. Lissa Gyte - Curriculum Leader Performing Arts
Geography Going Global - Responding to Inequalities Last Wednesday, as the final part of their current unit “Striving for Global Equality”, it was both a pleasure and privilege for our Year 10 Geography students to listen to special guest speakers Gemma Sisia and Felix Mollel from the School of St Jude in Tanzania. According to their website: “Poverty in Tanzania is endemic. Ranked 199 out of 229 nations in the world for GDP per capita, as a nation Tanzania is unable to provide its children with a quality education. The government school system is overstretched, under-resourced, and produces poor educational outcomes for Tanzanian society”. Gemma informed the girls about the progress she and her team have been making in responding to the problem of poverty through providing free, quality education to the poorest in her community. At the school she founded back in 2002 where she started with just three students, the School of St Jude now educates over 1900 students, with the first group of students to go right through to Year 12, graduating this year. Felix, their Visitor Team Coordinator, delighted the Year 10’s, coming dressed in his own native Massai costume and telling his own story of how he came to work at the school and how it has changed his life. He also gave them a quick lesson in speaking Swahili and without too much persuasion, had the students up and dancing. At the end of their talk, our Year 10 SRC representatives, Zoe Schramm, Philippa Leask and Sophie Capell, gave a beautiful, heartfelt thankyou to both Gemma and Felix and presented them with a $500 donation on behalf of the Year 10 students and the Geography Department, to help them with their worthy cause. It was indeed a wonderful way to complete this unit and I thank all of these students and their Geography teachers for their generosity. I think it is fair to say that Gemma is a true example of our own Mary Ward’s words “Women in time will come to do much”. Language Department News Congratulations to all the Year 7 and 8 Languages students who have completed a term of Chinese, French, German or Japanese. The girls will change Languages next term so to celebrate the end of their Term One studies, girls recently enjoyed a cultural lesson of food tasting and games. Chinese students participated in a Chinese Characters Competition and a Vocabulary Competition which were well received. Girls studying French sampled chocolate ĂŠclairs and fruit tartelettes then showed how much they had learnt during the term with a variety of competitive vocabulary games. German students tried cheesecake and made Easter baskets filled with German Easter eggs. Students in Japanese enjoyed Japanese lollies and biscuits and once again showed their competitive spirit with a number of games. Thank you to all the Languages teachers for making the above activities possible.
Year 10 and 12 Japanese students had the pleasure of meeting past pupil Jessica McMillan (2010) on Thursday 26 March. Jessica spoke to the girls about her work with the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) program. This organisation arranges teaching placements for English speakers in Japan. Jessica is currently working in two high schools in Kyoto where she has been teaching English since July last year. Jessica’s presentation gave the girls a wonderful insight into living and working in Japan. We thank her for her visit and look forward to seeing Jessica again in the future. Congratulations to Caroline Shaw (2006) who was recently awarded an Assistantship to New Caledonia, a French speaking country two hours from Brisbane. This is an Australian government scholarship and successful applicants are rewarded with a teaching placement in New Caledonia. Competition for these places is fierce so we congratulate Caroline on such a wonderful achievement. Caroline left Brisbane last weekend and she will be teaching English in New Caledonia until October. We wish her well and look forward to seeing Caroline on her return. Debating News Loreto has enjoyed considerable success this term in debating. Of the 14 debates that Loreto students have participated in to date, we have won 12. The 9.1 and 9.2 teams need only win one more debate and they will qualify for the Finals. Thanks to the coaches for their work so far and to the parents for ensuring that the girls get to the venues on time. The Year 10 and 12 teams have their next debate on the first Wednesday back next term, so I hope that they are able to spend some time working on their speeches over the holidays. The Year 8 teams have their next debate in the second week back. They too should try to begin their preparation over the holidays. I would encourage all debaters to use any long car journey they might undertake over the Easter break to hone their debating skills by arguing with their parents as often as possible. Loreto Kokoda Challenge 2015
The end of term and the end of our introductory training schedule. To date the girls have completed 1556km’s in 309hrs.Taylor, Jamie, Sara and Catherine have each covered more than 100km of training. Well done! Sunday 29 March was the first of three joint practice hikes with Cavendish Rd SHS. These hikes give our teams experience working within larger groups, something that we need to come to terms with on the Kokoda Challenge circuit later this year. The hike went well considering the heat and distance. On the day our teams completed the 17.4km circuit that took them to the top of Highwood via Gap Ck Reserve and back to Hoop Pine Picnic area. Sounds simple but takes effort. Thank you to our parents, Liz, Glenys, Maurice, Steve, Maria, Gayle, Paul, Sean and Irene for supporting us in the roles of support crew and registration marshal. Without parent support it would not be possible to run this activity. Our next activity is the Wednesday night hike at Mt Coot-tha where the teams will get out the head torches for three hours in the dark. This is a fun activity but still comes with risks. We will find out how many head torches actually work and how many fail before we finish. In Term Two we move to Brisbane Forest Pk for the second stage of training where the hills are longer and steeper. Our first training session will be around Camp Mt beginning with a short ANZAC service and then a 17km figure of eight around The Link, Sutton Crt, Camp Mt Rd and Leo’s Break. Fundraising by the four teams has started with the Loreto Wombats off and racing with a one dollar donation. The other three teams should be worried as the Wombats obviously aim to lead the charge in the fundraising stakes. Please give generously if approached by one of the girls. Keen to support us? Music News Autumn Concert Expectations With our Autumn Concert Series beginning in week one of next term, I wanted to briefly outline some important information and expectations we have of students at these concerts. We would ask that parents support us in these expectations so that the concert experience for all students is as successful as possible. 1.
Students are expected to attend the whole of a concert in which they perform – not arrive late or leave part-way through. When not in warm-up or on stage, students should sit in the nominated Student Seating area of the audience and listen to their friends and peers perform. The changes of format we are trialling in this series have been mainly introduced so as to make this participation possible for parents and students. If there is a specific reason that a student is unable to stay for a complete concert, please contact the Director of Music in writing (email is fine) prior to the day of the event.
2.
Students are expected to wear full Academic Day uniform (including stockings, not socks) for all performances. The only exception to this is members of Guitar Ensemble who will wear all black for their guitar performance and then change if involved with another group.

We would ask that during musical items no-one in the audience uses tablets or phones as this is disrespectful to the musicians on stage. Students using phones at any stage during the concert will have them confiscated by supervising teachers.
4.
For Health and Safety reasons, beverages (especially glassware) cannot be taken into the seating area of the concert venues. Each venue will have designated areas near the bar where drinks and snacks can be consumed. Service at the bar will finish five minutes before the scheduled start of each concert.

As there is no intermission at any of these concerts, we are only asking for provision of a small quantity of savoury snacks for parents to enjoy at 5:30 pm while their daughters are preparing to start the concert. Could the following groups please supply a small item for these concerts? Concert One – Senior Choir; Concert Two – Clarinet Ensembles; Concert Three – Guitar Ensembles. Thank you!
Rehearsal Changes – Percussion Ensemble Two Members are reminded that there will be no rehearsal this Wednesday 1 April (Cross Country Day). Rehearsal Changes – Flute Ensemble One As Flute Ensemble One is performing at the Monday 27 April Autumn Concert, students are reminded that your rehearsal for that week (Term Two Week Two) will be held on the Monday morning instead of the normal Tuesday morning, as this will obviously be much more beneficial to your preparation for your performance! Rehearsal Changes – Symphony Orchestra When we return to school on Monday 20 April, Villanova have a student free day. Orchestra rehearsal that day will therefore be held at Loreto and parents should organise to collect their daughters from our school at 5pm, not from Villanova. Women’s forum On Wednesday 6 May Loreto singers have been invited to participate in a Combined Girls’ School Choir performance for the Brisbane Women’s Forum event “Good Women”. The event features some fantastic guest speakers (including journalist Kathleen Noonan, liver transplant surgeon and author Dr Kellee Slater, and ABC Heywire award winner Prudence Melom). The choir was run very successfully last year and should be a lot of fun for girls who wish to be involved. Please email or see Mr Langford asap if you are interested. Grill’d, Camp Hill Do you want a great excuse to eat at Grill’d Camp Hill? Do you even need an excuse? For the month of April, the Loreto Music Support Group will be participating in the Grill’d Camp Hill “Local Matters” campaign. Your job is easy (and delicious!) – just buy a burger and put your token in the Loreto Music Support Group jar and you could help us win a $300 donation. That’s enough money to support a full music tuition scholarship for one school term. How could you not be tempted? Donations Please The annual Loreto Trivia Night is fast approaching! Run by the Music Support Group as both a social evening and fundraiser, the Trivia Night is one of the group’s three main opportunities each year to raise the money necessary to continue to support the Beginner Ensembles Program. We are now looking for donations that could be used as prizes for the Trivia Night. Any small items that can be grouped to make prize boxes for tables of 8-10 people would be ideal and could be left at either the main College Office or the Music Office. Boxes of chocolate, $1 & $2 Scratchies, Movie / iTunes / Playstore gift cards or similar items are all fantastic ideas that would be most welcome!

Tennis Draw for Semi Finals: 2 May The tennis draw for the Semi Finals on 2 May will be confirmed when school returns after the holidays. Interhouse Cross Country The Inter-house Cross Country will be held on Wednesday 1 APRIL. All students are expected to participate in the Inter-house Cross Country. The Inter-house Cross Country will be held at Whites Hill Reserve, Boundary St, COORPAROO. The students will be transported by bus to the venue directly after homeroom and returned at approximately 11.45am. A map of the course will be displayed on every Home Room noticeboard. Every student is encourage to complete this course whether it is by running or walking. It will be a 3 kilometre course on the ovals and in the bushland. The House Captains and Representatives are looking forward to having their teams come together and compete in a very spirited manner. If a student is unable to complete the course a note must be given to Mrs Stevens at the Sports Office explaining the reason for your daughter’s non-participation. Students are to wear their school sports uniform and cap to school and bring a shirt in their house colour to compete in. All students need to wear lace up running shoes. It is recommended that all students bring a water bottle. A meeting will be arranged directly after the carnival to provide information booklets including school holiday training at Whites Hill. All students must return their permission slips first week back of Term 2 regarding attendance at meets. There will be a Cross Country and Athletics Camp held on 16 and 17 May 2015. Details of the camp will be provided at the beginning of next term. This Camp is organised for the Cross Country Squad and girls who are interested in joining the squad for Athletics. Loreto Water Polo A huge congratulations to the two teams who played in the finals on Saturday. They were very exciting matches to watch. Our U14C team were runners up in the competition. Excellent effort to our U16C team who played Rivercity and won their match by two goals. They were down by 2 goals in the last quarter. They fought back in defence and displayed strength and determination to win their Division. AGE

A small price to make a big difference As we head into Easter and the school holidays and before the next fee statements go out, it is timely to remind you of the importance of paying the P&F levy. Although voluntary the levy (called a ‘contribution’ on your statement) provides a significant part of the P&F’s funding. At $21 per family for each of the four terms it represents a modest financial outlay but allows us to make a difference to you and your daughters by funding improvements to the school and fostering engagement with families and the community. In the past we have purchased fans, drop curtains and screens for the Mary Ward Centre, for example. This year we will be meeting some of the costs of parent information nights and much more.
