On Thursday 25 July Father Jerome Wa from Mt Carmel Parish led the school community in a celebra on of the Eucharist, to mark the beginning of the second semester. For those who could not be there for this celebra on I would like to take this opportunity to share our focus for that Mass.
The image of the Po er, drawn from the wri ngs of the prophet Jeremiah, was used to focus our prayerful a en on on the Chris an convic on that nothing can separate us from the love of God. No ma er our past history, we are given the opportunity to be shaped anew because of the love and forgiveness of God. Father Jerome spoke of the possibili es of what we can be. He was not speaking of the populist no on that we can be anything we want to be, but rather of the deeper concept of growing into the freedom of the vision that God has for each of us.
Gathered with us were fi y six former students who had a ended the College fi y years or more previously. Not only was it an honour to have them with us, but it gave tangible meaning to the message that the invita on to grow more and more into God’s vision for us is a lifelong, enriching journey. At mes paren ng teenagers can be a confron ng experience where the way forward is not always clear. Jeremiah’s image of the Po er and the message of Jesus remind us that in confron ng mes the way forward will s ll be painful but the movement will be forward if it is characterised by forgiveness and love. All members of the Loreto community are welcome at our two celebra ons of the Eucharist each year that mark the commencement of each semester. TÜà WxÑtÜàÅxÇà The Art Department is looking for any lace, ribbon, buttons and material pieces( Dance/evening wear fabrics) that you no longer have a use for, to use in our Year 8 Mixed Media (collage) Portraits based on Historical Portrait Paintings. Thank you. The Year 11 Visual Art Class completed their second Experimental Folio with a Non-Objective expression of place through painted media. Understanding of place was as diverse as the images created. Students explored places ranging from a child’s cubby made with bed sheets to the places of the mind. Their art work is present below. Wxutà|Çz axãá The debating season has now reached the Finals. These are “knock-out” debates – the team that loses is out of the competition. There are six Finals rounds culminating in the Grand Final debate on August 28. Each round is intense, since the competition clearly gets tougher - many teams will not have lost a debate so far this year and the debates occur weekly. Last week Loreto fielded four teams in the first round of the QDU Finals. Congratulations to the 8.1, 9.1 and 10.1 teams that are through to the next round. The 11.1 team had a bye last week and has their first debate next week. Commiserations to the 8.2 team which lost to BGS 8.1. Coach Mrs Georgina McKeown was very proud of the girls and of the progress they have made this season. Thank you Mrs McKeown for your time and effort working with the girls. _tÇzâtzx WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá Loreto College Coorparoo – Kanagawa Gakuen Yokohama Student Exchange Last Tuesday a group of 15 girls arrived from Kanagawa Gakuen in Yokohama, Japan for a short stay in Brisbane. During their time at Loreto the Kanagawa girls assisted with Japanese classes and perfected their English. Thank you to the Loreto families whose generosity in hosting our international guests made the exchange possible. Many thanks to Mrs Yuri Hada-Baxter for her excellent organisation of this Japanese exchange program and to Ms Amy Stewart who attended the party for our Japanese guests last Thursday. I would like to sincerely thank Ms Michelle Davidson and Mrs Kerry Williams who prepared Art and Drama activities for the Japanese exchange group along with Mr Bill Bradic, Mr Mark Onions, Mr John Henderson and Mrs Libby Oliver whose assistance with organisation was greatly appreciated. It has been a pleasure to have such a lovely group of Japanese girls at Loreto College and we hope to see other Kanagawa students and their accompanying teacher Tsukishima Sensei again in the near future. In the meantime, we look forward to preparing our return visit to Yokohama next year. The departure of our Japanese guests yesterday marks the end of our hosting of international visitors for 2013. This year we have welcomed students from France, Germany and three separate Japanese groups to Loreto College. Once again, thank you to all those who have been involved in ensuring the continued success of these international exchange programs with our sister schools.

In a very busy year for international visits and cultural celebrations at Loreto, the Multicultural Council has consistently been reliable, thoughtful and creative in their preparation of events. `âá|v axãá Exit Stage Left and Sorelle – Members of these two groups have a number of extra commitments over the next two weekends. Firstly, both groups will perform at the Mount Carmel Fete this Sunday 4 August, from 11:20 to 11:50 am. The performance stage will this year be on the school’s oval (not the same place as previous years!). Students from both bands should meet Mr Langford at the Norfolk Street entrance to Mt Carmel by 10:50 am so that we can get organised. All PA gear, music stands, drumkit, amps and keyboards will be provided. However, girls will need to bring their own instruments, music, drumsticks, auxiliary percussion and guitar leads etc. Secondly, Exit Stage Left will be holding an Open Rehearsal on the College’s Open Day (Sunday 11 August). This is one of many activities that the school will be providing at that event to demonstrate to prospective parents what happens in a typical day at Loreto College. Members of Exit Stage Left should arrive at Room 701 by 10 am and will be finished soon after 12 am. Open Day – Quite a number of music students will be participating in the College’s Open Day on Sunday 11 August. String Quartet are asked to arrive by 9:45 am to play in the MWC foyer from 10 am to 10:20 am. Thank you also to the following duets who will be “busking” at various venues around the school - Vania So and Abbey Martin, Georgia Christie and Violet Chan, Taylor Whitewood and Isabella Kubler, Kate O’Sullivan and Georgia Johnson, Bridget Clark and Michelle Godwin.
Senior Music Excursion - Our excursion to the QPAC Cremorne Theatre to see Blood Brothers is next Thursday 8 August 7:30 pm. Blood Brothers is a musical that has run on London’s West End for the past 24 years (over 10,000 performances!). Based on a book by Alexandre Dumas (Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers) it tells the story of twin brothers separated at birth. Music teachers will give tickets to the students during class on Thursday 8 August and then meet the girls in the Cremorne Theatre foyer by 7:10 pm that night. The show will finish at approximately 9:30 pm and we would ask parents to pick their daughters up as soon as possible after this time. Primary Music Camp – The Loreto Music Camp for local primary students will be held on Sunday 25 August. The finale concert for this event will once again feature a performance by our own Concert Band One and a number of advanced students from both Concert Band One and String Ensemble will be asked to attend at various times of the day to act as section leaders and instrument tutors for the younger students. Members of those two ensembles, please put this date into your diaries. Senior Choir – All members of Senior Choir are reminded that their rehearsal next Tuesday 6 August will finish at 5:30 pm 30 min later than a regular rehearsal. After having five weeks off rehearsals with exams and holidays, we now are very close to our major performances at QCMF. It is not possible to add EXTRA rehearsals into our students’ very busy schedules but we have for a number of years run some slightly lengthened regular rehearsals to help with preparation for this important Festival. We would ask parents to strongly support these extra times as it is the only time in the year we make this request. For a similar reason, members of String Ensemble have been asked to arrive early on Wednesday this week (see next item).
String Ensemble – Will begin slightly early at 7:00 am on Wednesday 31 July. In the week of QCMF, due to the Wednesday Ekka Public Holiday, the String Ensemble will rehearse on the morning of Friday 16 August. Students with other music/sport commitments at this time would be excused but we are hoping all other students will be able to attend.
Private Tuition with Ms Cox – Please note that due to the Photo Day this Friday Ms Cox will be teaching those lessons on Monday next week (August 5) instead. Parents and students should have received an emailed timetable update this week. (Thursday lessons will be on this week as normal). QCMF – For many years Villanova College has run this fantastic Festival, which provides such a great performance opportunity for all our students. However, the Festival only runs so successfully with the help of many parent and student volunteers, including Loreto parents. If you are able to volunteer to fill even one helping session (normally about 3 hours long) that would be greatly appreciated. You could sell tickets, man the venue entry doors, help out backstage, compere a section – you can normally even help out at a section in which your daughter is performing when you would be there anyway! Open A This week we matched up against Brigidine’s finest. It was a closely contested fixture with plenty of free flowing hockey. Despite many shots at goal, we managed to only sneak one past the keeper, thanks to the accurate hitting of Tahlia Simms. In the end luck was not on our side with the final score line Brigidine 2, Loreto Open A 1. Well done to all of our girls, particularly Meg Christiansen for her gallant debut as goalie. Open B In a foreshortened game, the B team quickly scored against a nine player Brigidine side. The team scored five goals in the first 15 minute half. With a slightly longer second half of 20 minutes, the team added another six goals. It was a great team effort with four players scoring the eleven goals. SOCCER – Round 8 Finals This Week’s Draw Open A, Open C and Junior A teams play away and the Junior C team plays at home. Open A team plays Mount St Michael’s at Mitchelton Football Club, Teralba Park, Osborne Rd, Mitchelton. Open C team plays Lourdes Hill College at Easts Soccer Club, Heath Park, 48 Hilton Street, East Brisbane. Junior A team plays All Hallows at Carmichael Park, 175 Boundary Street, Tingalpa. If students are being picked up from Mitchelton, East Brisbane or Tingalpa, students must provide a signed note to Mr Jones, no later than the morning of the fixture. The away teams will return home @ 5:30-5:45pm depending on the traffic. The Junior C team plays Brigidine at Annerley Soccer Club, 98 Victoria Terrace, Annerley. The home games will finish at 5:00pm and students need to be picked up at the venue. Students are reminded to bring their uniform, shin pads, mouth guards and water bottles. Soccer Results Junior A The undefeated Junior A's played out an entertaining 1-1 draw against an also undefeated All Hallows’ team. With both teams fielding just the bare 11 players, the game was always going to be a physically demanding one. Both teams showed why they are undefeated with some very good football being played. All Hallows’ came out hard and scored first. After 15 or so minutes, Loreto took hold of the game and held better possession for the rest of the match, and in the process scored the equalizer in the 2nd half. Both sides had opportunities to win the game, but the game finished all square. Both teams remain undefeated, and will meet in the final next week in what is shaping up to be a cracker of a final. Anthony Costa - Coach Junior C The girls all put in 100% throughout the whole game, the team started to pass the ball better and improved as the game went on. Despite being behind by 4 goals in the first half, they didn't concede a goal in the second half. Well done girls and good luck in your final match. Luke Duncan - Coach Open C - Round 6 This week was an exciting round for the Open C soccer team with the team registering their first win with a convincing 7-nil victory. The game against All Hallows’ saw the return of Krystal who has been sidelined all season due to injury. Her return proved to be the crucial game changer the team needed. Partnered up front with Awien, they were unstoppable scoring three goals each with a final goal put away by Shenae. Defence was rock solid and gave very few opportunities for the opposition to even come close to scoring. We look forward to further success next week against Stuartholme.

Round 7 This week the Open C team played Stuartholme at Michelton. The traffic to the match was heavy resulting in the girls getting off the bus and straight onto the field to play. The opposition managed to score a quick goal and we struggled for the first five minutes to regain momentum. We got our stride back and but were 2–nil down at half time. In the second half Krystal scored but unfortunately Stuartholme scored again and then in the last minute leaving the final score at 4-1. Better luck next week for our final game. Mr Corrado - Coach Open A A difficult task was awaiting our Senior A Football team. Our opposition in the last round of regular competition was All Hallows’, traditionally a very hard team to beat. Therefore our Tuesday training concentrated on attacking drills which could bring us an advantage over our opposition. The task was to bring the ball to our central midfield players Emme Ball or her replacement Jemima Moore for them to quickly pass it into the empty space in front of our quick strikers Zoe-Lee Spero, Mikayla Papintonia, Martia George and Carla Caputo. Surprisingly, we dominated the first 15 minutes and our goal keeper Sam Papas looked more or less bored. The first move towards our goal following a quick counter attack led to the first goal of the game, scored by the tall and very fast All Hallows’ central striker. Tuesday training paid finally off because within a few minutes Emme played a fantastic ball in front of Zoe-Lee and she scored from a short distance. It was exactly the same move, played by Emme to Carla that gave us a 2-1 lead shortly before half-time. The second half was an equal affair, both teams had quite a few good chances to score, All Hallows’ hit the goal posts three times whilst our shots missed the goal only by a few centimetres. During the last ten minutes our defenders Amerisa Xynias, Shannon O’Connor, Taili Beausang and Madi Andrews, assisted by Stephanie Bellos worked overtime to ensure our victory. It was however, a total team effort and every single player performed at or well above my expectations. One more game and we could be pronounced Grand Final winner, good luck against Mount St Michael’s! Richard Hamenrik - Coach

Results - Round 7 Open A - vs St Rita’s - Won 25 -16. We really did win this week! I must correct last week’s report and give Our Lady’s College credit for their victory. Our game against St Rita’s was really enjoyable to watch. A number of different position combinations worked effectively for us, reflecting the solid team which has been built this season. Our recent experience at Vicki Wilson Cup stood us in good stead and it was great to see the girls maintaining pressure until the final whistle.

Special mention goes to the defence players; Kristen Feuerriegel, Annie Passingham, Melissa Roberts and Sarah Roberts who were dominant throughout the game. Some powerful defensive rebounding delivered numerous valuable turnovers. Finals next week and all parents are very welcome. Well done girls! Coach - Meg Logan Open B v St James – Won 21-14. With both teams starting strong it was a tight game from the first whistle. Despite Loreto having a rather messy first half, the girls settled and regrouped for the third quarter, pushing ahead on the score board. Their strength in defence and quick transitions continued into the fourth quarter, clinching the win and proving Loreto to be the fitter and stronger team. Great game girls! Coach - Larissa Hughes Open C v St Rita’s – Lost 29 – 14 A hard played game. The team took a while to get into the game but came home really well. Kaitlyn Bell and Colette Hughes had great games in defence intercepting a lot of balls. The last quarter was 8 -7 which shows how hard they all played. Well done girls. Coach - Karen Holahan Open D vs Mt Alvernia – Lost 9 -19. Unfortunately the girls lost but all players performed well. Our tall defenders jumped and pulled in those much needed rebounds. Hannah shot well in our attacking end and Eloise and Greta were strong in centre court in assisting the ball to come through easily. Looking forward to our last game next week. Coach – Brittany Holahan Junior A vs Mt St Michael’s - Draw 11 All. The girls capitalised on the great work they delivered last week, continuing with good form to draw with Mt St Michael’s. The draw was contributed to by the accuracy of our star shooter Kristina Trigenis. Well done and looking forward to next week’s action! Coach - Lyn Dixon Junior B vs Our Lady’s – Lost 23 -11. A slow start to the game allowed Our Lady's to forge ahead in the first two quarters. Loreto fought hard in defence with some great rebounds in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Loreto were moving well onto the ball and gaining good ground. Unfortunately Our Lady's accurate net scoring proved too much for the team who could not catch up in the end. Well done to all players who kept fighting until the end. Coach - Clare Gill Junior C vs San Sisto – This week the Junior C team had another great game - winning against San Sisto. All players showed great improvement in ball skills, communication and teamwork. Excellent defense by Martina, Georgia and Elena saw many turnovers and intercepts! Well done girls! Coach - Stephanie Esprester Junior D vs Brigidine – Won 20 – 5. Another great win for the team. I am very proud of the girls for their improvement throughout the season, particularly as a team. Special mention to both Bec and Mads who played in defense positions. Both girls did a terrific job which can be reflected in the score. Looking forward to another possible win in the last round. Go girls! Coach - Sarah Pettiford Intermediate A vs St John Fisher – Won 20 – 16. This week the team showed persistence and determination coming out with a win against St John Fisher. The girls thrived under the pressure of being out of position. It was great to see them encouraging and giving guidance to their teammates. Hopefully the girls will finish the season with another win. Coach - Magdeleine Ryan Intermediate B vs Mt St Michael’s – Won 33 – 9. The team had another strong win this week, defeating Mt St Michael’s. Despite having no reserves, the girls played consistently well in both attack and defence for the entire game. It was a great effort by all. Coach - Bridget O’Connor Intermediate C vs St John Fisher – Won 26 – 10. The girls displayed great team work and determination this week. They played a great attacking game, and showed considerable improvement. In particular, Maki was the standout in circle attack, with accurate shooting and wise positioning that enabled those in centre court to feed lobs quite easily. Well done! Coach - Ashleigh O’Connor Intermediate D vs Mt Alvernia – Won 35 – 12. The team had another fantastic week. This was by far our most challenging game of the season, however as always, the girls came together as a team and worked hard to achieve every pass. With only one game left, the girls and I are very confident that we will finish off the season undefeated. Good luck for our final game girls. I Coach - Emma Macleod Intermediate E vs St John Fisher – Won 25 – 1. A great game from all the girls. Transition play down court was smooth and much improved. Emily and Lauren shot accurately in attack and Beth was solid in defence. Congratulations on another excellent win. Coach - Briony Logan Intermediate F (1) – BYE Intermediate F (2) vs St John Fisher. The girls played a strong game of netball defeating St John Fisher in last week’s round. Our defence were brilliant in contesting every ball that came down to their end of the court. Athletics Squad 2013 Training is well under way and all girls are expected to make several training sessions a week. It is strongly encouraged for athletes at attend the Tuesday afternoon session at QEII. A bus will transport the girls to and from the stadium. The High Jump training will also be held at QE11 on Monday afternoon . A bus will take the girls with the teacher/coach to the centre and return at approximately 5.30pm.The first Lead Up Athletic Meet was held on Friday 26 July. It was a successful meet with many girls achieving their personal best. It is a wonderful opportunity for the girls to practice and compete at competition level. A sincere thank you to those parents that helped out at the meet on Friday night. Those parents were greatly appreciated. The next meet is Friday 2 August and Monday 12 August 2013. All Athletes need to attend at least 2 Athletic Meets. A bus will take the girls to UQ Athletics Centre, Sir William MacGregor Drive, ST LUCIA. Competitors will need to be collected at the venue after the meet. The meet will start at 4.00pm and finish at approximately 6.15pm. For the meets to run successfully Loreto College would appreciate some parent help. Meg Stevens - Sports Director
