I am delighted to know that the trip went so very well but not surprised to hear that “our girls were magnificent”.

BUILDING PROGRESS Whilst construc on of the new classroom block is progressing nicely, unfortunately we have experienced some frustra ng delays with both the Home Economics and Tuckshop developments and as such they are not yet complete in readiness for the return of the students this week. However, whilst not ideal, this eventuality is not en rely unexpected as the program melines were extremely ght and op mis c. As such we do have in place some con ngency plans to ensure both uninterrupted delivery of the curriculum and the provision of student catering. These par cular works are now due for comple on by 17 February. In the interim, a temporary basic tuckshop service (with no hot food) will operate from the Mary Ward Centre kitchen at recess and lunch me each day, as occurred in the final weeks of 2013. A temporary sewing room has also been created in the Gonzaga Barry building and the Home Economics curriculum program has been re‐sequenced to accommodate more cooking later in the teaching program cycle. I thank the students and the staff for their generous understanding, pa ence and forbearance in working with and around these par cular circumstances.

During the next six months of ongoing construc on works we par cularly seek parent support and awareness with traffic management and pedestrian safety issues. With the circular drive now closed, student drop off and pick up is only available on Cavendish Road on either side of the driveway and in Lade Street. These areas are sign posted and a two minute limit is in opera on between 7.00am and 9.00am and 2.00pm and 4.00pm. Parents are asked to please observe all parking and speed restric ons. Addi onally, due to the high volume of demand (at pick‐up me especially) it may be wise to choose an alterna ve mee ng point further from the College to which your daughter(s) can walk. LIBRARY REFURBISHMENT I am delighted to report that we have made some exci ng, changes to the Library layout and furnishings aimed at improving student learning and engagement. I look forward to seeing the students and the teachers delight in this improved environment. I thank Ms Engler and Mr Bradic and their respec ve teams for their efforts in re‐imagining and re‐crea ng this important space for learning. CONGRATULATIONS

Now that building works are underway there have been a few changes to parking and drop-off arrangements around the College grounds. Parents are asked to observe all parking and no-standing restrictions around the College to ensure maximum safety for all concerned. Please comply with the following arrangements:
The circular drive at the front of the College is closed to all traffic and will no longer be available for student drop-off or pick up.
There are two designated “Drop Off Zones” – one on Cavendish Road on either side of the circular drive and the other at the back of the College in Lade Street.
In each of these two zones there is a 2 minute standing period between 7.00am and 9.00am and also between 2.00pm and 4.00pm. PARENTS ARE REQUESTED NOT TO EXCEED THESE TIME RESTICTIONS.
When using these zones, it is best to stop as far along the zones as possible to ensure other vehicles can also access them as well.
Please comply with all No Standing restrictions around the College. They are there to ensure safety and any parking in these areas places others at risk.
The College is conscious of the residential neighbours in the area and we strive to be a “good neighbour”. Please respect the rights of the neighbours and do not park in front of driveways or in other manners which may restrict access. Parents should be aware that Queensland Police do patrol the area from time to time and have in the past issued infringement notices and fines for any vehicles that have not complied with parking restrictions. Each envelope has a unique code printed on it which is required for each student to place an order. If you wish to have a family photo taken, please collect a Sibling /Family Photo Envelope from the College Office. Once completed you must ensure that each student returns her own envelope even if payment is made in the eldest child’s envelope. Envelopes are not to be placed inside other envelopes as they can often get missed. Please return these envelopes plus your individual photo order on the photo day Monday 3 February. Please do not return these to the College Office as it is not a collection point. Unfortunately, if envelopes are not brought on this day, orders will need to be made directly with the photographer (Advanced Life Photography 3216 8280) and a late fee will need to be paid with the order. lxtÜ K tÇw lxtÜ DC itvv|Çtà|ÉÇ VÉÇáxÇà YÉÜÅá All Year 8 students were given a consent form for Boostrix, Varicella (Chickenpox) and HPV Vaccinations today Thursday 30 January. From 2014 a free booster dose of adult/adolescent diptheria-tetanus-pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine will be offered in the school based vaccination program for every Year 8 student. Year 10 students were given a consent form for Diphteria, Tetanus and Pertussis (Whooping Cough). It is very important that these forms are completed and returned to the College office by 8.00 am FRIDAY 7 February. Year 8 will have their first dose of HPV and their Boostrix vaccinations on Thursday 27 February at 9.00am, therefore it is imperative that students return the forms by above date, otherwise they will miss the opportunity to have the vaccination. The Varicella and second HPV vaccinations will take place on Tuesday 13 May. The final HPV vaccination will be given on Monday 10 November. Please note that Year 8 students cannot have the 2nd or 3rd HPV vaccination unless the first one has been administered. The Year 10 vaccination will be given on Thursday 27 February and it is highly recommended that they receive this injection as a recent tetanus vaccination is a requirement to be able to attend the Year 10 Camp later this year. This is a free service provided by the Brisbane City Council. Parents are asked to sign and return these forms even if you do not wish your daughter to receive this vaccination Completed forms will be collected via courier from the College main reception on Monday 11 February. \ Vg axãá Year 8 Student Laptops The incoming Year 8 students will receive their first orientation session with their new laptop on Thursday 30th January. On the same evening, beginning at 7pm in the Mary Ward Centre, there will be an information session called “Habits and Tools for Learning”. Ms Tania Gallen (Yr 7/8 Teaching & Learning Coordinator) will outline some of the educational programs focussed on good habits for learning and Mr Gavin Swanson (Deputy Principal – ICT) will provide information about the student laptop program. At the end of the evening the Student Laptop Agreement can be signed and students are able to take their laptop home. It is imperative that at least one parent accompany their daughter to this evening as only parents are able to sign the agreement.
Year 10 Student Laptops Year 10 student will receive their new laptop on Wednesday 5th February. During this day the students will hand in their present laptop and then will be able to login to their new laptop for the first time. Parents are able to come to the top floor of the Mulwith building between 3.30pm and 6.00pm to sign the Student Laptop Agreement to allow their daughter to take the laptop home. Laptops can only be sent home after a parent signs the agreement. At the same time, parents are able to indicate whether they wish to purchase the laptop their daughter has used for the past 2 years.
School Network Upgrade During the holiday period a significant amount of work has been undertaken to upgrade the school wireless network to cater for the increased demand. I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the ICT Support staff, led by Mr Gary Marsh (Systems and Network Administrator) in carrying out this major upgrade within such a tight timeline.
Student Printing Allowance Each student is allocated a $15 printing allowance for the year. Black and white copies are 10c per double sided page and colour is 40c per double sided page. Once this allowance has been used up by students they will need to go to Mrs Bongaarts in student reception to put some more money on their account. We would encourage all students to use the printers wisely and to question whether they really need to print as much as they do.
ICT Help Desk If students have a laptop that is not working correctly, or has been accidently damaged, then they need to take it to the ICT Help Desk in the Library promptly. The information below is taken from the 2014 Parent Handbook which is available on the College Website. They relate to the critical issue of the partnership between the school and parents to ensure that your daughter’s safety and well-being is given the highest priority. There are some changes to procedures, so I would ask that all parents read this information carefully. ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL In the best interest of your daughter’s safety it is ESSENTIAL that you contact the School Office or the Absentees line 3394 9964 as early as possible if she is absent from school. If the office is not open a message can be left. This is the only way to determine if there is a valid reason for your daughter’s absence. If your daughter has not arrived and no notification has been received by 10.00am, you will be sent an SMS message asking that you contact the College to verify your daughter’s absence. At intervals telephone checks are made to ensure that absences are legitimate. Requests for special absence from school must be directed, in writing, to the Principal. While the educational value of overseas or other extended trips is recognised as is the occasional need for family holidays in term time, the priority of regular attendance must always be considered. ILLNESS PROCEDURE
If a student is ill in class, she should tell her class teacher who will sign the Student’s Movement Log if she/he gives permission for the student to leave class to go to Sick Bay. She should then go directly to the Sick Bay.
Our duty of care to your daughter means that under no circumstances is your daughter to contact you on the College phone, her mobile phone, by text message or email.
Parents will be contacted by staff and asked to collect their daughter where necessary.
Parents are asked to take staff advice and come willingly to collect your daughter.
It is vitally important that parents notify the school of an emergency contact number so that arrangements can be made for the welfare of a sick student if her parents cannot be contacted.
Students who are unwell are not usually permitted to travel home by public transport.
Students may remain in Sick Bay for one hour only. They must then return to class or parents are contacted.
PARENTAL CONTACT WITH SCHOOL The Homeroom teachers are responsible to the Principal for the general behaviour and pastoral care of the homeroom group. Subject teachers are responsible for monitoring the behaviour and progress of students in individual subjects. Parents with any concerns should contact the homeroom or subject teacher through the school office either by telephone or email. If appropriate, the teacher will direct the issue to another member of staff - Subject Coordinator, Year Coordinator, School Counsellor, Learning Enrichment Coordinator. Staff cannot be expected to respond to emails outside of school hours and may take some time to respond to emails during the school day because of their teaching commitments. Urgent requests or concerns should be conveyed by telephone through the school office; staff will ensure they are attended to in a timely manner. SUPERVISION BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL Supervision of students begins at 8.10am and finishes at 3.30pm each day. No responsibility for students is taken outside those times, other than students involved in particular activities under the supervision of a particular teacher, coach or other staff member. Theses activities may include training for sporting teams, Music Ensemble rehearsals, Club activities or meetings. Some other facilities are made available to students outside the general supervision times. The Library is open between 7.30am and 4.30pm. A staff member will be available in Room 210 each morning between 7.15am and 8.00am for assistance with Maths and supervision of school related computer use. No responsibility can be taken for students not involved in one of these activities before 8.10am or after 3.30pm. When social functions or sporing activities are held at Loreto, staff will remain behind until all students have been collected. It is, therefore, most important that students are collected punctually. For sporting activities off-site, staff will transport back to Loreto any students who have not been collected by the appointed time. Staff will take no further responsibility for supervision. How to Access Parent Lounge from the Loreto Website A reminder that Parent Lounge provides you as parents and guardians the opportunity to view information about your daughter and events that are occurring at the school. Parent Lounge is a secure, password protected site. The Parent / Teacher interviews will also use this portal to book meeting times for the interviews that occur early in Semester Two. You are also able to add your contact details to the Parent Directory if you choose to do so. On the Parent Lounge home page there is a menu option called ‘Parent Directory’ and you have the option here of adding some contact information that other parents will be able to view. To access Parent Lounge go to the College website www.loreto.qld.edu.au and click on ‘My Loreto’ at the top right of the page. Then click on ‘Parents’ to go to the link for Parent Lounge.
Once you are at the Parent Lounge login screen you enter your user name (parent number on fee account) and your password. Once you log in for the first time you can change your password to something easier for you to remember by clicking on the ‘Change Password’ icon at the top of the Parent Lounge home page. You are able to return to the home page at any time by clicking on the Loreto Crest at the top left of the screen. We hope that you use Parent Lounge regularly to stay in touch with your daughter’s and the College’s activities. If you forget your password it is a very easy process to change it. Once you get to the Parent Lounge login screen the image below will appear. Click on ‘Forgotten Password’ and then follow the instructions to change your password. `âá|v axãá Music Camp We leave tomorrow (Friday 31st)! Students attending the camp should bring their lunch in a disposable container and wear appropriate free clothes to school. On arrival, please put your bags in Room 701 (top level Mary Ward Centre). Meet in the MWC Mezzanine at 12:30 pm to mark rolls for an immediate departure. Parents – don’t forget that we will finish the camp with a short concert at Villanova College (24 Sixth Avenue, Coorparoo) from 4pm and you should collect your daughters from there after the concert.
"Crazy For You” Update While the school year is just getting started, rehearsals for this term’s combined musical production “Crazy For You” have already begun! Last week the leads and orchestra began rehearsals in the Augustine Centre. We asked all students to learn their lines, songs and parts over the holidays and the production staff were very pleased with the preparation of all students involved. To update our progress since 2013, the construction of an elaborate New York and American Western set has commenced. My thanks to the Villanova maintenance staff for their creativity and hard work in converting drawings on paper into the complex set we will see in the coming months. The production team, involving staff from both Villanova and Loreto Colleges, have been fine-tuning the production schedule and designing sets and costumes over the break. Thank you to the staff involved for giving so freely of their own time for what is shaping up to be a very memorable, entertaining and lively musical production. Upcoming Rehearsals Due to the Music Camp this weekend, there are no rehearsals until Tuesday 4 February 4-7pm (Leads, Orchestra and some additional cast members will attend this rehearsal - additional cast members required will be notified by email). The first FULL cast rehearsal is on Friday 7 February 4–7pm. For all afternoon rehearsals can students please eat afternoon tea before 3:45pm and be seated in the Hanrahan Theatre no later than 3:59pm. Afternoon rehearsals will commence at 4:00pm sharp. Production dates The musical will be performed over four nights: Wednesday 12 March 7pm, Thursday 13 March 7pm, Friday 14 March 7pm and closing night on Saturday 15 March 7pm. Tickets go on sale in less than 3 weeks time! Ticket sales will commence at 6am on Friday 14 February using an online ticketing system. More information about ticket sales will be posted in future newsletter articles. Crew, stand by! Crew members are not required to attend rehearsals until mid-February. This later start should compensate for a more demanding production schedule for the crew commencing late February and extending into March. However, the crew are expected to help with some of the set painting tasks in the coming weeks as the set pieces roll off the assembly line. Farewell We would like to wish a fond farewell to Miss Emma-Shay Guilfoyle, who for the past two years has been our second Classical Guitar tutor. Over the holidays Emma was accepted into the School of Music at the Australian National University in Canberra. Emma is sad to leave Loreto and her students here but obviously excited by this wonderful opportunity. We wish her the best of luck for her continued studies and this new challenge!

Music Support Group Welcome Supper The Parent’s Music Support Group meets once a month to help plan and run social events and fundraising for the Music Department. Involvement with this group is a great way to contribute to the school if your daughter is part of the music program. Come along on Wednesday 12 February to the Welcome Supper in room 702 of the Mary Ward Centre to find out more. Please note that this is a new venue for our meetings caused by a variety of classroom changes due to our current building works.
Ensemble Rehearsals All Music Ensembles begin rehearsals next week – starting with Clarinet Ensemble 2, Concert Band 2 and Big Band on Monday! If you are a keen singer, or even would just like to give it a go , then don’t forget that the Senior Choir (Years 10 12 Tuesday after school) and Junior Choir (Years 8 - 9 Thursday after school) are not auditioned – anyone is welcome to come along and give it a try.

fÑÉÜàá WxÑtÜàÅxÇà LORETO TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014 All tennis players who trialled at the end of 2013, and all new Yr 8, 9, 10 ,11 and 12 students who would like to trial must compete in the Loreto Tennis Championships. Trophies will be awarded in each Age group. This event will be conducted at Brisbane Girls Grammar School Tennis Courts, 70 Gregory Terrace, SPRING HILL. The date is as follows: Saturday 8 February 7.30am to 12.00pm – Year 8 12.00pm to 5.00pm – Year 9 Sunday 9 February 7.30am to 12.00pm – Year 10 12.00pm to 5.00pm – Year 11 and 12 All players need to sign up via email by Wednesday 5 February at morning tea outside the sports office A DRAW WILL BE PUT TOGETHER ONCE ALL GIRLS HAVE SIGNED ON.

INTERHOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL – FRIDAY 14 February The Interhouse Swimming Carnival will be held at Chandler on Friday, 14 February. Girls must wear sports uniform to school and can change into house colours on arrival at school. Girls will need to change back into sports uniform before going home. Closed in shoes must also be worn. All students will travel by bus to and from Chandler and should arrive at school no later than 8.25am. All buses will return to Loreto for a usual 3.20pm finish to the day. This is the first big Interhouse Carnival of the year and all students are expected to attend, compete and contribute to the house spirit on the day. This is a compulsory school day. Any student who cannot swim in events due to medical reasons should see Mrs Stevens in the Sports office prior to the carnival day to be allocated a job at the carnival. All competitors are to swim in one-piece togs, preferably Loreto togs. Each girl is encouraged to bring her own lunch and a drink as there will only be limited access to the canteen. Girls are not permitted to leave the pool area during the carnival. NO GIRLS MAY GO HOME INDEPENDANTLY FROM THE CARNIVAL UNLESS A PARENT IS ACTUALLY AT THE CARNIVAL AT 2.00PM. A LETTER REQUESTING PERMISSION SHOULD BE FORWARDED TO MS CARTY, DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – PASTORAL CARE BY THURSDAY 13 FEBRUARY. Walkman/Discmans/IPods and magazines are not to be taken to the Carnival.
