Volume 17 - 2 June, 2015 Dear Parents & Students Have enthusiasm for your cause, nothing of much worth is a attained without enthusiasm. Mother Gonzaga Barry IBVM
And so it is, I hope, with great enthusiasm that the students have begun their final preparations in the countdown for the upcoming end of semester exams. This is the season of the harvest, where the fruits of commitment, perseverance and hardwork will be rewarded. I thank the teachers for their every effort given to engendering in their students a love of learning and a thirst for the pursuit of excellence. I look forward to reading many reports of positive engagement and learning at term’s end. PRINCIPAL’S LEAVE – Term Three
In this, my fifth year as Principal of Loreto, I am blessed to be given the opportunity for enrichment/sabbatical leave. This means that I will be on leave from the College for Term Three. In my absence, Ms Helen Carty will be the Acting Principal. I wish to thank her most sincerely for accepting this appointment. I know that she will greatly enjoy this experience and that she will be well supported by the wonderful Loreto community. Whilst Ms Carty takes on this added responsibility, Ms Annie Diamond will be the Acting Deputy Principal Pastoral Care and Mrs Rosemary O’Neill will be the Acting Year 12 Coordinator. I wish to thank them both for accepting these positions. I know that they too will both enjoy your support. I wish them every success for the term. Some of my time away will be spent attending a Summer School for School Principals at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. This course is one that has been highly recommended to me by colleagues so I am greatly looking forward to the experience. As well as spending some time in the States, my husband and I will also be taking part in a one month Study Tour on Catholic Culture conducted by the Catholic Theological College University of Divinity. This Study Tour – Pilgrimage visits sites of Catholic significance in Ireland, Scotland, England and Italy. I know that I shall relish every moment and look forward to sharing aspects of this experience with the community upon my return. WELCOME
To Mrs Jenny Sampford who once again joins us for a short stay. Mrs Sampford will be with us for the next four weeks in the absence of Mrs Jeanette Little who is taking some Long Service Leave to spend time with her family in celebration of the birth of Mrs Little’s first grandchild, Spencer. We wish her every joy for this special time away.
CONGRATULATIONS
To Anyela Rogan (Year 7) on her selection in the Queensland U13 State team for trampolining, double mini trampolining and tumbling. Anyela competed in the Australian Gymnastics Championships held in Melbourne last week placing in the top ten in her events.
To Georgia Bishop-Cash (Year 9) who was presented with a Loreto Charm at today’s assembly in recognition of her selection to compete at the U25 Wheelchair Basketball Championships in China. We wish her every success.

To the Year 11 Hospitality students on the wonderful success of their first official catering event. They are to be congratulated on the professionalism of their High-Tea service and the outstanding quality of the food they prepared. Well done girls and special thanks to Mrs Inger.
To the Loreto Cross Country Squad members on their achievements in last week’s CaSSSA Carnival. Individually there were many personal bests and Loreto placed Second in the overall Percentage Trophy. Well done to all concerned with particular thanks to Mrs Stevens and our coaches Andrew and Clare. It is very pleasing to see Loreto holding such consistently high standards in this event over the last three years.
CONDOLENCES We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Mrs Jane Ridgway (staff member) and her family on the sudden, unexpected passing of her beloved husband Rob on the weekend. May the love and support of this community bring her special comfort at this time of loss and grief. May Rob rest eternally at peace in the loving comfort of our Gracious God. Amen.
Yours sincerely

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on Students with Disability (NCCD) From 2015, all schools across Australia are taking part in the implementation of a new national data collection on school students with disability. The data will provide information about the number of students with disability in schools, where they are located and the level of adjustments they receive. The information provided through this new national data collection will enable all Australian governments to better target support and resources to benefit students with disability. Better information about school students with disability will help teachers, principals and education authorities to put the right supports in place for students with disability to take part in school on the same basis as students without disability. Information will be recorded in such a way that no child can be identified. Student names will not be collected. Inclusion in the data collection is voluntary. If you wish your young person to be excluded from this, you can choose to opt-out of the data collection by informing the school in writing. Click on the following website link to access the factsheet on the Information for Parents/Carers. https://docs.education.gov.au/system/files/doc/other/nationally_consistent_data_collectionparents_and_carers_version_no_2.pdf Please contact Mrs Ruth Goldney on 3394 9999 for any additional information or concerns about the process.

Accounting News - Blue Shift Competition Last Saturday ,Team Innovation, made up of Year 11 Accounting, Economics and Legal Studies students, Nicole Hodge, Isabelle Orazio, Brittany DiSavia and Jemima Reid, represented Loreto College in the finals of the QUT Blue Shift Competition. The girls did exceptionally well to not only make the finals, but to take out 3 rd place. The competition was tough with schools throughout QLD and NSW entering. Each team member won a $50 gift voucher, tickets to the AFL and a newspaper subscription to the Courier Mail. Matthew Preston - Curriculum Leader Business and Economics
Year 7 Happenings EXAM BLOCK The Year 7s will have three exams in an exam block next Tuesday and Wednesday. These exams will take place in the homerooms. Girls should bring the required equipment to the exam stored in a see-through container. This could be a plastic sleeve, a clliplock bag or a see through pencil case. The girls will line up in alphabetical order outside their classroom before each exam while the teacher sets up the exam. REVISION SKILLS
Year 7s have been discussing which revision techniques work best for different subjects. You might like to ask your daughter which techniques she has decided to use for her upcoming exams. Here are some conversation starters for you to use at the dinner table:
How is revision in Maths different from revision in other subjects?
Why is revision like cleaning your teeth?
What is the best way to prepare for a written task?
Have you tried the flash card technique in one of your subjects?
DEBATING DAY June 12 As per last week’s newsletter I am interested in having some parents provide assistance on this day. It would be particularly helpful if there are any parents who could help out between morning tea and lunch (10:50 – 12:30). Please email me if you are able to offer your time on this day. nielsona@loreto.qld.edu.au Anna Nielson - Year 7 Coordinator
Year 8 News Our PD session last Friday was spent digging deeper into Study. We had four teachers who shared their ideas and tips on how to study effectively in a variety of subjects – Maths, Humanities, Languages and Science. The girls took notes and have a study plan to share with you. The tips are uploaded onto LMS so that all students can access this information again. Please ask to see your daughter’s study plan and the notes she took during this session. Ask her about an analogy dealing with cleaning her teeth and ‘making her brain shine!’ Jan Kearney - Year 8 Coordinator

Performing Arts News Junior Drama Club Thank you to all of the parents who attended the performances by Year 7 and 8 students over the last fortnight. Your enthusiasm in the audience was greatly appreciated by your daughters and the Performing Arts department. Thank you to Year Level Coordinators, Mrs Anna Neilson and Mrs Jan Kearney for their support. Years 10 – 12 Theatre Production On Thursday 28 May, playwright Victoria Carless and professional dramaturg, Kathryn Kelly, met with the Drama staff to review the first draft of our commissioned script. Miss Stephanie Coleman and I found this unique experience professionally rewarding, very exciting and an opportunity to learn more about the process of creative script writing. Thursday lunch time workshops continued this week with the girls learning about the setting of the play, Brisbane post WWII, and experimenting with selected scenes. The context of the play is stretching their imaginations and enabling them to create original characterisation. On Friday 29 May, we met in Room 411 for a guided reading with Victoria. This was a really interesting process and the girls were encouraged to give their feedback on the script. We look forward to Victoria’s second draft in the near future. Lissa Gyte - Curriculum Leader - Performing Arts
Interact Dance Thank you The Theme ‘High School Cliques’ organised by the Year 12 Interact Leaders proved to be a hit last Friday Night with the Year 7, 8 and 9s for the Annual Interact Dance. Special thanks to the staff who generosity donated their time to supervise the dance. A special thanks also to Mrs Margaret Duncan for her ‘behind the scene’ organisation. Greatly appreciated also the parents who assisted with supervision of the dance - Maria Nicolaou, Darshi Nanayakkara, Peta Jones, Phil O’Brien, Jasmin McCosker, Bernie Mullan, Troy Mackenzie, Sean O’Neil and Mrs Tanya Hansen. We have less than seven weeks to the challenge weekend when all four teams will endeavour to complete the extremely tough 48km course without a break. Two big practice hikes and one night hike is all that is left for teams and individuals to refine skills and build on endurance. Over the next few weeks, last team changes, if any, will be finalised and team support crews will be organised by team leaders for the big day. On Saturday 30 May we traversed sections of our old training circuit and one or two new ones to finish early. There were a few absences and a couple of die-hards who turned up who probably should not have. Even though the weather in the morning was absolutely glorious the temperature climbed to a very uncomfortable 27oC. At 11am it was decided to ring parents and exit before we collapsed from heat exhaustion. The exit meant a slight detour from the top of Centre Rd to Holman Break and down a couple of interesting tracks to avoid the bitumen back to Bellbird Grove. This coming weekend is for alternate activities to let the muscles recover from the pounding and let the blisters heal and knees aches disappear before the next big hike. The next training hike on 13 June will start at Bellbird Grove and will be new tracks not covered in previous hikes. As expected they will be just as difficult but unfamiliar. Like past training sessions participants will be tested both mentally and physically. This will bring to a close training in D’Aguilar National Park. Our top distance achievers, Sara, Emily and Catherine, still maintain the lead and are well ahead of the pack. Newcomers to the +200km club after this weekend are Isabella and Jamie. Well done! At last all four Loreto teams have reached their minimum fundraising target. Fortunately, we did not need to implement Plan B, selling Brownies. Loreto Wombats and Loreto One are in the top ten fundraising school teams. Even though Loreto Wombats have slipped to eighth place they are still shaking their donation tins. If one of their tins gets shaken in your direction please pop in a coin or two. Thank you to everyone who has generously donated so far and your comments of encouragement. Your support of our teams in their endeavour to support Australian youth at risk through The Kokoda Youth Foundation is greatly appreciated. If you wish to make a donation to our teams please visit https://kokodachallenge.com/donate-online and select Jim Stillman Cup for event and search for Loreto in the list of team names. P&F Year 7 - 10 Dance - Friday 31 July Save the date!! The Loreto School Dance is nearly here! The dance will be held on Friday 31 July at 7.00pm. The theme for the evening is “Neon”. We are inviting our Year 12 girls to attend the dance. This will provide a safe environment for all who attend. The dance will feature a professional DJ, a lot of fun for both students and parents, and we all aim to make it enjoyable and safe. With that in mind, we require parents to register their preference and availability for the following jobs: Ticket sales: Six parents needed for student entry and one to assist with the counting and clearance. 6.30pm - 7.30pm. Security: Twelve parents needed for each shift. Crowd control while waiting for tickets and supervising the outside of the hall. The doors of the hall are open for ventilation. Parents are required to stop attendees leaving and others entering. There are two shifts: 6:30pm - 8:30pm and/or 8:30pm - 10:30pm. (Professional Security Guards will be employed for inside the hall). Cloak room: Six parents needed for each shift. Receiving bags for safe keeping during the dance and distribution at the end of the night. 6:30pm - 8:30pm and/or 8:30pm - 10:30pm. Canteen:
Three parents needed for each shift. Drinks sales. 6:30pm - 8:30pm and/or 8:30pm - 10:30pm.

Fundraising Dinner for Room to Read Projects in Nepal Loreto has supported Room to Read’s fundraising dinners in the Mary Ward Centre because of their shared purpose – the transformational impact of education. This year, the dinner will fundraise to rebuild its projects in earthquake-ravaged Nepal. Nepal is very special to Room to Read. Way back in 1998, John Wood, on a trekking holiday from his Microsoft job visited a school that had NO books! They said "Come back. Bring books". And he did! He then started the organisation, Room to Read. Since then, Room to Read have built 3776 libraries and 1101 schools in Nepal, and published 269 titles in Nepalese. It's important to rebuild these schools and libraries as quickly as possible because getting kids back to school creates normalcy in their lives.
