At this time I am also especially conscious that our Year 12’s will be looking back this week on just how quickly their time as leaders has gone. They have achieved much and can be well pleased, knowing that they have left a legacy on which others now will build. I offer particular thanks and gratitude to Mrs Meecham for her careful guidance and masterful coordination of the Year 11’s in the weeks leading up to this point in time and for the commitment and effort she shows each year in preparing the girls so well for their roles as Year 12 leaders. POTENTIAL FOR HARM – Social Media site Ask.Fm and others I wish to add my voice to those of many other Principals in expressing serious concerns about the potential for significant harm in the “teen/tween” use of free social media sites such as ask.fm; tumblr; formspring and snapchat. The ask.fm site in particular causes me great concern because it is set up for users to post questions about themselves, or to others, and wait for replies and responses. This sounds innocuous enough, however, what this site lacks is the critically important privacy controls of other mainstream sites and the replies and responses can be completely anonymous. In terms of cyber-safety this site provides users with an ‘open-door’ to cause and/or receive psychological harm.
The ‘openness’ of this site’s access also means that non-users can easily link in to an individual’s postings via a simple Google search using the user’s name and ask.fm together. A quick exploration of the site reveals that many young users post inappropriate images of themselves; engage in ‘risky’ profiling and discussion; use offensive language and imagery; and get drawn into negativity which can spiral. It is vital that on such sites students do not refer to their school and/or give other personal information as this information can be used to track and trace individuals. The school does not wish to be linked in any way to the ask.fm site and the associated posts. Students who refer to Loreto on this site, via their any comments or postings, are in breach of our expectations and policies. I have this week asked all students to remove any references to Loreto and have also encouraged them to disable their activity on this and other similar sites, urging them rather to be young women of sincerity, verity, felicity and hope. I ask all parents to please consider your daughters’ social media activity and her cyber-safety. Music News Music Night This Friday night will be another music event you shouldn’t miss. All school groups who did not play at Live & Wired last weekend will be performing on this night, including some very special items such as the combined Guitar Ensembles and a Finale featuring Concert Band One, Senior Choir AND Junior Choir. Admission is free, though a gold coin donation is always appreciated (all funds raised go towards Music Support Group Scholarships). St Vincent de Paul News I had the privilege of accompanying 15 students from Years 8-11 to visit the Nursery Road Special School last Thursday morning where they were integrated into a variety of classrooms for a few hours. The activities the girls participated in ranged from reading sessions to physical therapy sessions and movie making. Whilst some of the activities were challenging the warmth and generosity of the girls won the hearts of the students they were paired with and praise from the teachers in charge. Three girls were fortunate to work in one of the senior classes where the teacher was a past pupil of Loreto Coorparoo who acknowledged that it was her participation in such an activity that enabled her to realise her vocation.

Results from Round 6: Open A were defeated by Mt St Michael’s 28 - 22 This was a close match that went down to the wire! Loreto were ten points down at half time and three points down with 30 seconds to go. Mia Page hit a fantastic 3 point bomb, but unfortunately this was not enough to get Loreto across the line. A gutsy effort and it was great to see such determination held until the final siren went. Open B defeated Brigidine 24 - 17 This match was one of the hardest for the season with Brigidine playing well above their bottom of the ladder position. Great defensive efforts were displayed by Mary-Kate Dennis and Darcy-Rae McCowan. Olivia Mastry continually forced turnovers which enabled Loreto to convert points. This was a hard fought win and all players were supportive and positive throughout the match. Intermediate A (Blue 9’s) defeated Intermediate A (Gold 10’s) 21 - 18 This was always going to be a tough rematch from Round 1. With the 10’s showing improvement in the last two rounds we knew the score would be close. The 10’s held the lead in the final quarter but fatigue and softer defence prevented the 10’s from securing a victory. Georgia Johnson, Georgia Christie and Sidney Brain were the best for the 10’s, while Sophie Freedman, Stefanie Gjokmarkovic and Zoe Sever lead the way for the 9’s. Junior A were defeated by Lourdes Hill 37 - 23 Lourdes Hill are placed second on the ladder and were clear favourites to win the match. However Loreto stepped up to the challenge and maintained close contact until half time, being only one point down. Rachael Dalton, Madeleine Miller and Grace Dwyer had strong games. Majestic Park Running Any girls are welcome to join the running training sessions with Andrew Lulham and Clare Geraghty on Monday and Tuesday afternoon at 3.30pm to 4.45pm and Thursday morning from 6.45am to 8.00am. Queensland Secondary Track & Field Carnival Congratulations to Eloise Carroll (Year 12) for an outstanding Meet. Eloise gained a Bronze Medal in the 3000m and 1500m run as well as a Gold Medal in the 2000m steeple chase for 18 – 19 year old girls. Results from Round 3: Under 13 Had a disappointing loss to All Hallows, going down in the last quarter after leading the game and playing so well. The attack was really good as was the defence however minor mistakes let the opposition score. Coach: Oliver Chamber Under 14 – Had a BYE

Under 15 The girls played exceptionally well and possibly the best they have played as a team. Unfortunately they were very tired in the final quarter and let the win slip away. Coach: Oliver Chamber Under 16 Had another solid win against All Hallows. This confirms that they are the team to beat this season. Focusing on defence in the game, the girls held on to win 13 – 2. Coach: James Duffy Under 18 Had a great game and the team worked particularly hard to defeat Brigidine. During attack the girls had a good setup, although they needed to work on spacing their mushroom to allow the ball to get into centre forward. In defence the girls were laddering back well although at times we were letting opposition players swim past us to get a counter attack. During counter attack the team were spotting the counter and getting the ball up quickly which was excellent. Overall the team had a good first game combined with the Warriors. Coach: James Duffy
Water polo training for Fitness - Term 4 All girls are invited to attend swim training sessions for the Water polo at the Loreto pool in preparation for the 2014 season. Music Night 2013 Friday 1 November 6pm Attendance: It is compulsory for all students in performing ensembles to attend the Music Night in which their group is performing. Arrival times and venues are listed below. It is expected that students stay for the duration of the concert. A high standard of behaviour is expected. Any students who are only performing in the second half of the concert should arrive by 6pm, leave their instruments in the appropriate warm-up venue and return to the audience to sit with their parents for the first half of the concert. At intermission, meet your conductor at your warm up room and then sit in the seating that has been reserved for students.

Pre-Season for Swim Squad 2014 6 Swim Sessions in Term 4, 2013 Dates: 4 & 6 November, 11 & 13 November, 25 & 27 November 2013 Days: Monday & Wednesday Venue: Loreto Swimming Pool Time: 6:30am- 7.45 am The Loreto Term 4 Swim Squad program is starting on 4 November 2013. This is an opportunity for all girls wanting to be part of the 2014 Swim Squad to meet the new Swim Coach Ms Hatch in preparation for the 2014 season. It is strongly recommended that all girls who want to be in the team for 2014 attend. All swimmers will benefit from the training program that aims to build on the success from the 2013 season.

SWIM CLINIC/SQUAD TRAINING
Date: 13, 14, 15 January & 20, 21 & 22 January 2014. Days: Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. Venue: Loreto Swimming Pool. Time: 7:15am – 9:00am. Cost: Free for Swim Clinic. There will be a Breakfast on 22nd January directly after training. (Cost of Breakfast will be $10.00 per swimmer)
The Loreto Swim clinic/training program offers an opportunity for all girls to improve their stroke and fitness, in preparation for the 2014 Competition. Competitive swimmers/past squad swimmers will benefit from a customised training program that aims to build on the success from the 2013 season. Social swimmers are welcome.
