This is the revelation that gives us some comfort. . . . . CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK The Act of Kindness is a hallmark activity of Catholic Education Week. It provides a great opportunity to give witness to the message of Jesus and the mission of the Church beyond the school curriculum. The Act of Kindness highlights the Gospel values of justice, compassion and kindness. It helps promote a sense of community responsibility that is at the heart of the ethos of Catholic education. By participating in an act of kindness simultaneously, schools across the State can also highlight to the wider community the justice values that Catholic schools strive to live out. The activity serves as a tangible link uniting our Catholic education communities and helps each student to know they are part of a ‘bigger picture’. Together, we have the ability to bring about a real difference in the lives of others. To demonstrate this unified activity, our seniors are encouraging the student body to show an act of kindness this week.

With the results of the Interhouse Music Festival and Interhouse Athletics announced last week I wish to congratulate the House Leaders and all those involved on the wonderful success of both events. It is a privilege to celebrate with the students the wonderful gifts and talents they have and to share with them the enriching experience of lively and friendly competition where success is not measured only in winning: spirit, participation, enjoyment and effort are all equally important to us at Loreto as we seek to “live and celebrate life in all its fullness”. Congratulations to the winning house, Barry on First Place in the 2014 Athletics with Mulhall runners up. Congratulations to Mulhall who placed First overall in this year’s Music Festival and also to Barry who were Spirit Point winners.

Brisbane City Council - School Parking Monitoring The College has been advised by the Brisbane City Council that they will be continuing to monitor parking behaviour around the College during Term 3. In the letter that we have received, the BCC advises: “The primary purpose for parking enforcement around schools is to ensure child safety. While it is certainly not Council’s intention to make parking near schools an overly onerous task, regulating parking activities is necessary to promote safe driving practices during pick up and drop off times. Over the next school term, Council officers will be attending school zones to ensure safe parking practices. Parking fines may be issued in cases where illegal parking practices are observed.” If parents would like to learn more about parking legally, Council encourages you to visit the web site at www.brisbane.gov.au/ traffic-transport/parking-permits/parking-rules As always, the College encourages parents and others parking around the College to observe all restrictions and to drive safely. Languages Department Loreto College Coorparoo – Kanagawa Gakuen Yokohama Student Exchange During the school holidays 12 Japanese students in Years 10-12 spent a memorable two weeks in Japan experiencing life in a Japanese school and taking in many amazing sights that this country has to offer. After visiting Kyoto, Hiroshima, Takoyama and Tokyo, the girls spent a week in homestay as guests of Kanagawa Gakuen, Yokohama. Our travellers presented a video during Assembly last week and it was clear that everyone found the trip to be an unforgettable, once in a lifetime experience. Many thanks to Mrs Yuri Hada-Baxter and Mrs Diane Hanson who accompanied the girls on this journey and ensured the continued success of the exchange program between our two schools. Last Wednesday it was the turn of a group of 18 Kanagawa Gakuen girls to travel to Brisbane and experience life at Loreto College Coorparoo for six days. During their time at Loreto, the Kanagawa girls assisted with Japanese classes and perfected their English. Thank you to the Loreto families whose generosity in hosting our international guests made the exchange possible. Many thanks to Mrs Yuri Hada-Baxter for her excellent organisation of this Japanese exchange program and to Mrs Diane Hanson and Mrs Peita Ward who attended the farewell party for our Japanese guests last night. I would like to thank sincerely Ms Michelle Davidson and Mrs Kerry Williams who prepared Art and Drama activities for the Japanese exchange group along with Mr Bill Bradic, Mr Mark Onions, Mr John Henderson and Mrs Libby Oliver whose assistance with organisation was greatly appreciated. It has been a pleasure to have such a lovely group of Japanese girls at Loreto College and we hope to see other Kanagawa students and their accompanying teacher, Iwase sensei, again in the near future. Japanese Day at Loreto Congratulations to Greta Wilcox and the Multicultural Council on the excellent way in which they organised celebrations for Japanese Day last Friday. The Japanese lollies were very popular at morning tea as was the screening of “Totoro” at lunch time. We were also extremely fortunate to be entertained by the talented singing of our Japanese visitors whose recitals of Believe and Yasashisani were truly beautiful and clearly showed how hard the girls had been practising! French News Last Tuesday we also welcomed two French exchange students to Loreto College Coorparoo. Océane Christophel and Maëlle Girard will spend three weeks at our school as part of an exchange program organised by NACEL. During their time here the girls will be assisting with French classes and attending other lessons with their Loreto peers to familiarise themselves with life in Australia and perfect their English. We thank the Coorey (Charlotte – Year 9) and Reich (Eloise – Year 9) families for hosting these girls and we wish Océane and Maëlle a wonderful stay in Brisbane. German News Planning for the German exchange program will begin this term. We are also expecting a visit soon from Antonia, our German exchange student from 2012, who stayed for a term with Zoe Price (currently in Year 8 White). Co-Curricular Music Performances in Term Three This is an extremely hectic term for students in the Music Department! Could parents AND students please take careful note of all the following performance dates and make sure their daughters are available for each event? Sunday 10 August Big Band, Junior Choir On Sunday 10 August the College holds its annual Open Day. The day will start at 10:00 am with some duets and solos as background music in the Foyer of the MWC, before the Big Band will perform on stage at 10:15 am. Junior Choir will hold an Open Rehearsal from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm (this will be in place of their Thursday rehearsal on 14 August). Finally there will be Rotunda busking and a Classroom Music display in 702. All students involved have by now been sent an email to their school account with details so please check this urgently. QCMF – ALL ENSEMBLES From Thursday 14 August to Sunday 17 August Villanova College will host the annual Catholic Colleges’ Music Festival. Each year, ALL Loreto ensembles (except beginner brass and strings) enter this event. The festival is an important event in our Performance Calendar that we take very seriously and is one of our three compulsory performances for the year (along with the Autumn Concerts and Live & Wired/Music Night). It is our expectation that ALL students in our ensembles make themselves available for whatever performance times we are given by the Festival (published in the last newsletter of last term and again in this newsletter). If you have any clashes, please contact me at the school urgently. Percussion Ensemble Two time change: Please note there has been a change of times for Percussion Ensemble Two as follows: arrival time now 12.54pm, Performance Time 1.35pm. See attached schedule for all Ensemble times. Sunday 24 August – Concert Band One, String Ensemble, Beginner Brass & Strings, selected Guitar and Vocal students Each year, as a service to students from the local primary schools, Loreto College organises and runs a day-long Primary Music Camp in the Mary Ward Centre. Loreto staff conduct a variety of music groups and Loreto students act as tutors and section leaders throughout the day. The camp finishes with a short concert, at which some of the Loreto groups perform. Please keep an eye out for full details, which will appear in the newsletter as soon as they are available. Thursday 28 & Friday 29 August – Private music students On these two dates we will run the Term Three Lunchtime Music Recitals for students who would enjoy the opportunity to perform in an informal public concert. Extended Rehearsals Due to the many disruptions to rehearsal times this term (and the public nature of so many of our performances) it is our practice to extend a some rehearsals (eg. afternoon rehearsals finishing at 5:30 pm) in weeks two and three. Concert Band One – We have a very special assembly performance coming up next Wednesday 6 August and therefore need to extend this week’s Thursday 31 July Rehearsal to 5:30 pm so that we can practice using the hall itself after Sport training. In return, we will finish our rehearsal on Thursday 14 August a bit early (4:30 pm) just prior to the busy QCMF weekend. Flute Ensemble One All members are reminded that we have moved this week’s rehearsal to Friday 1 August 7:15 am in 701. Congratulations to Louisa Gough received a B for her level 3 AMEB Cello exam. Athletics Squad for 2014 Training is well under way and all girls are expected to attend several training sessions a week. Athletes are strongly encouraged to attend the Tuesday afternoon session at QEII. A bus will transport the girls to and from the stadium. The first QE11 training session is Tuesday 29 July 2014. There is also Relay training on every Sunday at QE11, Nathan. All 100m runners are expected to attend the session from 3.00pm to 4.30pm. The Lead Up Series of Athletic Meets are on the following afternoons: Friday 1 August, Monday 11 and 18 August 2014. All Athletes need to attend at least 2 Athletic Meets. A bus will take the girls to UQ Athletics Centre, Sir William MacGregor Drive, ST LUCIA. Competitors will need to be collected at the venue after the meet. The meet will start at 4.00pm and finish at approximately 6.00pm. For the meets to run successfully Loreto College would appreciate some parent help. If you can assist could you please fill in the permission slip from the booklet and return ot to the sports office. Students should demonstrate success in Academic Achievement (inclusive of Arts, Drama, Dance and Media), Sport Achievement and Community Leadership and Civic Participation. Winners will receive grants of $2,500 and the top 10 per cent of the highest achieving finalists will receive greater recognition via a $5,000 grant. Recipients will also have the exclusive opportunity to apply for a scholarship worth 50 per cent of tuition fees to study either a single or combined degree at Bond University at the completion of high school. Adolescent Scoliosis Spinal Curvature - The National Self-Detection Program Scoliosis is a lateral or sideways curve of the spine. The spine also rotates on its long axis as it curves. It usually develops during early adolescence (age 10 -13 years) when growth is most rapid. While very small curves are common and of no significance, about 2% of girls have a curve which warrants medical observation during the growth period. Three girls per 1,000 will require treatment during the growth phase. If treatment is required, the earlier it is undertaken, the better the long term result. This is the basis for screening since in the early stages scoliosis produces no symptoms. The way to detect scoliosis is to look for it! A brochure has been sent home with every Year 8 and Year 9 student. If after reading this you or your parents think you may have this condition, please consult your family doctor. P & F News Meeting apology The new Federal Member for Griffith Terri Butler will be unable to attend our next meeting due to other commitments. However her office has informed us she looks forward to meeting Loreto parents in the future. Making alternative arrangements will be among the items on the agenda at the meeting on Tuesday 5 August at 7pm.
